"Tucked in St. Helens off Highway 30, at 58499 Columbia River Highway, I found a new spot inspired by a ’70s-era bar run by the owner’s grandparents and devoted to his grandma Betty’s signature Midwestern steamed sandwich. The steamed sandwich — deli meats and Havarti on Franz hoagie rolls — is flash-steamed, basted with clarified butter, finished with a house seasoning, and served alongside house-made San Marzano tomato soup; vegetarian options are plain cheese or shiitake mushroom, but there’s no gluten-free bread. The menu is deliberately small so everything stays fresh and simple: meats are sliced thin to avoid being a gut bomb, and sides like a pickled pepper and olive plate and a sweet cucumber salad bring acidity and balance. Beverage options are limited by design — Miller High Life on draft is the only beer and cocktails are playfully kitschy (the “Dirty Betty” mixes cherry limeade with Tito’s Vodka) — and you won’t find lettuce, tomato, or onion anywhere. The vibe aims for an instant-classic dive-bar feel with green vinyl barstools, plastic menus, old-school TV reruns, and a jingly bell on the door, offering fast, approachable comfort food rather than destination dining; it’s open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m." - Thom Hilton
