The Best New Restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"Mixé (pronounced: “Mee-hay”) took over the former Calavera spot this past December, with a focus on Oaxacan food, plus mezcal and espresso drinks. Diners can dig into the restaurant’s plentiful taco menu or experience dishes such as the enchiladas mole Oaxaqueño. Follow that up with drinks from the bar, such as the mezcal Negroni." - Dianne de Guzman

Ugh this was such a hard score to determine. As someone who’s spent a lot of time in Mexico City and Oaxaca I was soooo excited to watch here. And the food was great! Queso con chorizo, tuna tartare, tacos and churro cheesecake 🤤 the service was okay. The thing that’s dragging down the score is the bar. They hype that they are basically a mezcaleria but they have a cocktail menu of 4 drinks and a short two pages of mezcal. Then for a very upcharged ~$25 they will give you a half a shot of a bottle that’s ~$130. If the bar sitch is fixed, I’d give it a 4 or 5!

They have a covered and heated patio that is an excellent place to enjoy a meal, even on a cold winter night. The food was delicious and everybody who worked there was great, so we'll definitely be going back. Nice cocktails too!

Ugh, I really have to get this review off my chest. We knew this restaurant space as Calavera and we used to really enjoy it. It is super sad to have had such a bad experience at - now - Mixe. This year, Valentine's Day fell on a Friday so my husband tried to do the right thing and made a reservation weeks in advance. Our reservation was for 7:45PM and we knew things would be crazy, so we arrived at 7:30PM. When we arrived, we saw it was busy and told the host "It's okay. We'll wait at the bar". The host promised us she would find us when our table was ready but she looked confused and uncertain. Well. 8:00PM rolled around, and I started to notice people getting seated who arrived after us. My husband went to the host and asked what was happening, and she told us not to worry because we saw there was a table being actively cleaned. My husband waited off to the side, as she continued seating people who arrived after us. Finally, as the table she promised us was finally prepped.... she went and sat somebody else!!!! My normally calm, jovial husband was losing it. He approached her again and asked her what happened, and the host looked bewildered and apologized. Thankfully (not thankfully?), we were WELL past the dinner rush and we finally got seated at an empty table at 8:10PM. We didn't get water until nearly 8:30PM, and we were both so frustrated by the experience that we decided to hurry up and order and get the heck out. The food was also a mixed bag. The Molcajete had good flavors and good portions, but we also ordered the Rib Eye, which was extremely confusing. The server asked how we wanted the Rib Eye, and I replied "Medium rare" because I thought we would get a steak. What came out was a thinly sliced chuleta-style filet (see pictures) that has NO chance of being "medium" anything. Of course, it was "well done" and very tough. We did complain to our server who comped 1 set of drinks, but, honestly... We spent $140 + tip on a meal that was confusing and frustrating. It's so sad to say (because we loved Calavera) but we will not come back here to Mixe.

We missed the soft opening last Friday so we decided to come on a Thursday evening. When we arrived there was only a couple dining and hubby wanted to go somewhere else but I convinced to come in. We opted for the bar to see Thursday Night Football in which they were able to change it. We met Will the manager who whips up drinks and knows his stuff Freddy was tending the bar and made us feel welcome. He made recommendations and we opt for Queso flameado con chorizo and Ceviche Halibut. Both came fast and super delicious and presentation was on point. We plan on coming during brunch and super recommend giving this place a try, you wont be disappointed.

We had such a great experience, our waitress was lovely and the food was amazing. I had the Piña & mint agua fresca and it was delicious, next time when I’m drinking alcohol I’ll definitely try their mixology. Can’t wait to be back

Google
This is a long overdo review, but I dined for early drinks and dinner sometime in March. The food was underwhelming.. I think a certain expectation was set by their price point and marketing that this would be an elevated dining experience but unfortunately the food was forgettable and overpriced. I got nachos on the menu expecting them to be out of this world but they were very average and not worth returning for. Although small and starting out at the time, the cocktails and mezcal selection were the only parts about Mixé that met the elevated experience advertised. I came back months later to say this: my party and I were shocked to hear a middle aged light skinned Latina woman, who we assumed was the manager, calling their bartenders racial slurs in Spanish while speaking to the floor staff. The bartenders that night were three black men while the entire floor staff were nonblack Latinos.. Perhaps they felt my party would not be able to hear them but we did. Truly abhorrent and I can’t imagine the workplace culture cultivated there with people like that placed in leadership positions. I will not be returning and I really hope if they plan to profit from the Oakland community that they address this issue.

Google
The food was so good - I couldn't decide on which of their 3 molés I liked the best - each was so unique and delicious. I was shocked this restaurant was nearly empty (a few people at the bar) on a Thursday evening as the food was so good. So happy to have stumbled upon this gem of Oaxacan cuisine - everyone in our party enjoyed their food and they had delicious vegan options too.

Google
This restaurant has a stunning atmosphere—there’s no denying the beauty of the space. However, beyond the aesthetics, the experience fell short. The staff was inattentive, and although they claimed to be overbooked, several empty tables remained throughout our visit. The silverware felt incredibly cheap, which didn’t match the upscale feel of the decor. As for the food, it was, unfortunately, underwhelming. The flavors were bland, the meat was tough, and the fish in the ceviche was noticeably low quality. It felt like more effort was put into the visuals than the dining experience itself. If you’re looking for a picturesque spot to sip a drink, this might be the place. But if you're after a great meal, I’d recommend looking elsewhere. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning.

Yelp
I had a lovely experience at Mixé. The environment, service, and food were impeccable. It's a treat to come across a chef like Jorge who is so passionate about his craft. The aguachile negro de camarones was a dish I'll be dreaming about until I return. The sauce was truly top 10 sauces I've ever had. They have happy hour on Tuesdays. Extremely reasonably priced, large portions, and loaded with flavor! I will be back!

Yelp
I passed by this place a couple weeks ago and thought "oh that's new". Looked it up and I was sold based on their instagram and website. I wish I had some cute photos to post and review of the food. Unfortunately, instead I'm here to complain about the service. My friend and I made a reservation for 8pm days ago. We arrive and mention the reservation, host looks confused. Goes to check with her boss and comes back to say the kitchen closed early. She says they called and sent an email. We received no such email and my friend only had one missed call from an unknown number with no voicemail. I awaited an apology, nothing. I asked if the bar was open and she looked confused again and looked back at the bartenders and says "I'm not sure" mind you there are two bartenders at the bar. And someone sitting at bar having a drink. At this point I'm annoyed and clarified that today they just happened to close early and asked what time the kitchen and bar typically closes which she claims is 8:45pm. We never received an explanation for them closing early nor an apology for them simply not honoring our reservation. I also don't understand how they have their front door open and a host at the front who apparently doesn't know if they are even open. An utter waste of my time and by 8pm it's hard to pivot plans. Fortunately MUA across the street never disappoints. I give them 2 stars because I still may go back one day, but my friend says she has no interest in returning.

Yelp
Not a fan. Not a great experience and drinks were bland, service slow, food was mid. Way better Mexican restaurants in the Bay Area. No thanks

Yelp
Surprisingly good mocktails and solid snacks. Popped in with a friend for a drink and a nibble before a show at the fox theater. The ambience is open, upscale warehouse with ornate chandeliers and a well stocked mezcal bar. I ordered the Friday kahlo (zero proof) which was surprisingly complex for a mocktail. My friend had their espresso martini, which they enjoyed. We shared a plate of carnitas enchiladas with mole sauce, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, an upscale bar with solid mocktails/cocktails and decent food.

Yelp
What an incredible experience! Food was amazing and drinks were very refreshing. Nachos were to die for. The service was outstanding. Piper was our bartender. She is super friendly and has a terrific personality. Overall we loved the ambiance and vibe of the place. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Excellent food and cocktails! The Molcajete was the highlight! Really good service, not crowded, plenty of outdoor seating as well!

Yelp
Mixe was nice. I ordered a mocktail at the bar and enjoyed some chips and guacamole. I came here for an food event and I had a nice time. The mocktail I ordered was called the Frida Khala. It was very spicy... I had to ask the bartender to leave out the spicy ingredient and the bitters. He said it would be a completely different drink but I took a chance. It was pleasant! I liked it much better than the original full ingredient version. The food was okay. As influencers, the food tends to get cold when filming and taking pictures... It sucks but it happens quite often. We ended up eating the food cold.. It still tasted good but it would have been 100% better had we eaten it hot and fresh.. This is no fault of the restaurant, it's just the way things go when doing media for a restaurant. The menu had lots of tasty dishes on it. I might come back to try the food when it's hot if I have the time.

Yelp
A 4-4.5 star would be more accurate but the food was incredible and deserves 5 stars! The menu online isn't up to date so we were disappointed about the lack of mocktails however the bar staff was able to create one that was on the online menu and the Frida Kahlo was so good!!! The service was quick and the food... THE FOOD! It was delicious! It was the best vegan chorizo that we've ever had. The mole was a little sweet so I would want to try some of the other sauce options but it worked so well! My fiancé got the chicken fajitas and said it's the best he ever had and even reheated, it was still delicious! We are looking forward to going back!

Yelp
We pre-gamed here before going to a concert up the street. The wait staff were very nice. The food came quickly. and the restrooms were very clean. We had a couple of drinks and appetizers. Very tasty. I'll be back to try out the enchiladas. Someone next to us got them and they looked fantastic.

Yelp
I was sad when Calavera closed its doors at this location but Mixé came in with a bang! We came in on a Thursday, feeling thirstay and hungray. Service was super friendly and attentive. Food was different and delicious. Drinks were . NBA on the TVs above the bar. Loved everything about this place, will def be back for more.

Yelp
I saw Mixé pronounced (MEE-HAY) on IG. You know I always fall for grown and sexy. Stopped in this place for a coffee because it says it's an expresso coffee bar. We go in and grab chairs at the bar. We get settled and go to order drinks and coffee. Well the bartender advised that they only have Americano's and no cream. What? Then this is NOT an expresso coffee bar. Hm. Drinks were ordered and we tried to open a tab and the same bartender advised that he didn't want to be responsible for a card. This guy's bedside manner was fuqd up. I know what to do in those cases. WRITE ABOUT IT. So I ordered nothing. My stomach wasn't settling well from eating all off that rich food at dinner, so I go back up to the bar to order some Tonic Water. I asked the same bartender the name of the former restaurant and he told me Calaveras, then he went on to pronounce the name of MIXÉ; got it. He advised that he was a new bartender; obviously. We were getting ready to leave but I had to ask a different bartender about being an expresso bar with one expresso drink and no cream or milk? I specifically asked about latte's and cappuccino's and she said yes we make those. You can order with me and I will go grab from downstairs? Hm. This proves either the other bartender didn't know or didn't want to be bothered. Either way, not the best experience. I am glad that we went impromptu because it gave me the opportunity to see if I was going to choose this place for a birthday meal with my friends. Yea, not at this time. Maybe when they fully open. The reels and pictures on IG is a bit more than the hype at this time. When we were leaving, we smelted something delicious coming out of the kitchen, though. Sorry, I didn't take pictures.

Yelp
I sat at the bar and tried a coffee cocktail and the enchiladas with their house made mole. Everything was good, and service was fine and the space was airy. There were not a lot of people so I think once it gets more popular it'll have a different vibe. The drink and dish were delicious, my favorite part was the mole it had a nice bitter flavor. I'd be curious to come back and try more things.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised to see Mixe a few weeks ago and came here with a group of friends for dinner. The ambiance reminded me a lot of Calavera, slightly darker vibe and more romantic. We started off with a round of chips and salsa and a combination of flavored and house margaritas. The portion sizes for dinner were sizable, enough for two people to share an entrée. Even though there were a lot of servers companies to the number customers, the service was slightly inconsistent (different servers bringing different items and a gap between checking in on us once we got our food). I'm sure they'll work on that leading up to their grand opening. I look forward to trying them again!

Yelp
Mixe is new in 'soft opening' mode in uptown and we visited for dinner. We've always loved this space with the large bar area and it's nicely changed up from the previous Calavera. We also really love Mexican food and margaritas, who doesn't love this on a Friday night after a work week?! The cocktails were spot on and we enjoyed the asparagus starter though the smoky flavor was a bit strong. The shrimp flautas were SO delicious I will definitely come back for these. The enchilada suizas were tasty but could use more sauce. We absolutely loved the refried beans.... Service was attentive and friendly and there's more we'd like to try, will definitely be back! Welcome to Mixe!

Zuleika A.

Yelp
Everything was so delicious! We tried the flautas de papa, molotes de papa and chorizo, tacos de asada, mushrooms, and carnitas and the queso with chorizo flameado. Everything was delicious the red salsa was good and spicy. Definitely coming back to try some other stuff! Service was great and the restaurant it nice and upscale. Prices are good too. The chef was also around and I asked him a certain item on the menu he explained what it was and everything. .

Leslie K.

Yelp
The food was amazing. So tasty. My bf and I tried several things off the menu and we enjoyed all the food we ordered. However, the service was not the best and the drinks were okay. We waited a long time for the someone to help us, take our order, and even pick up the tab when we finished despite them not being busy that day. I got a drink with tequila but for some reason, they made with mezcal so I sent it back (if you know liquor, you know mezcal has a strong smoky flavor and it was off putting). My bf got the espresso martini and it wasn't very good either. All that said, the food was so great we'll be back.

Yelp
We miss the soft opening last Friday and decided to come and check it out. Freddy and Will were working the bar and made suggestions. We had 2 Matadors, queso flameado con chorizo and Ceviche Halibut. The food arrived fast and was appealing. Im hoping it will survive since Oakland is not a great place for survival.
google avatar

Lexi J.

Yelp
I really enjoyed Mixé! The food is much better than Calavera! We had the shrimp ceviche, sopes with al pastor, and flautas de camaron. The shrimp ceviche is one the best I have had, sopes were moist and delicious and flautas were great. All the food was excellent. We had great service from our server who helped with the menu and had excellent timing. But huge shout out to the server assistant/busser who really took great care of us. The ambiance could use a little work, felt a little cold and empty in there but that could be because I was more used to Calavera. There are small improvements I would make to ensure Mixé ambiance matches their food quality, such as moving away from cheap paper napkins or more of a fun/creative cocktail menu. But overall, great job Mixé

Matthew G.

Yelp
I don't write a ton of reviews but I really didn't enjoy Mixe. We went to Oaxaca last summer and when I saw it written up in a new restaurants in Oakland list we wanted to check it out for weekly date night. It reminded me of a Mexican PF Changs, the food was all highly composed, covered in sauce, with a sort of one note flavor. There's too much excellent Mexican food in the bay to eat like this. Drink menu looked good, lots of people there drinking at the bar but nobody at seats when we arrived. We ordered drinks and a pair of appetizers and when they brought the drinks they were way more one note than the description (a mezcal and coffee drink and a tequila jugo verde). We ordered more food and then the appetizers came (corn dish and mole). The corn was entirely too sweet, not enough salt or spice. Same with the mole. We had a bunch of other appetizers as mains including tuna tartare (more soy sauce than anything else), ceviche (fish was lightly cooked and too large), and the aguachile (probably the best thing, too much of the sauce on top). Would never go again.

Adrian J.

Yelp
Fantastic food, Mole enchiladas, the molcajete. Agua frescas taste homemade. Recommend this to others.

Esther A.

Yelp
Food, service, everything was amazing! We took some dear friends who wanted Mexican/Oaxacan food before they left Oakland, and we are so glad we took a chance on this new restaurant. We will come back again and again!
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! Havn't had Oaxacan style Mexican food like that since traveling in Mexico. Been here 3 times now and loved everything I've got. The service is a bit slow tho, seems slightly understaffed? I hope they hire more because I don't wanna lose this place!

Mark M.

Yelp
Amazing. I will absolutely be back again. The mole sauce was outstanding, the restaurant atmosphere was perfect, drinks were delicious...and the service was incredibly friendly! What a great place...you have to try it!

Audrey J.

Yelp
Unfortunately the experience here was below mid, and it was very disappointing considering we really loved what we saw from the reviews and menu. We ordered the red snapper ceviche and molcajete caliente. The red snapper ceviche was good. We then waited about an hour before we were given the bill, which surprised us because we had never received our entree. We had a commitment after dinner that we needed to go to, so we couldn't wait around for them to rush to make the order. Also, it doesn't seem fair to wait more than an hour for your entree in general? Maybe just my opinion. I'm not sure where the mixup was. We were also one of the only people sitting in the restaurant so I don't think the mistake could be attributed to anything other than mismanagement. It seems like the running theme is inattentiveness, as I'm reading additional reviews. From what we could taste, nothing was too special.

malaysiaisabel h.

Yelp
Mixe was amazing! I saw it one day driving down Broadway so my boyfriend and I went in to give it a try. We ordered the green enchiladas and mole enchiladas which were SO filling and so flavorful and the ceviche with halibut was to DIE for. I've never had ceviche with kiwi before and it tasted so good all together. Will definitely be going back and the space is huge! Could definitely have a birthday dinner or private event in their indoor patio area. :)

Marie B.

Yelp
Awesome place!! The atmosphere and food was great!! Started off with aguachile negro, which was amazing to me. I could have ate that all night long. Then grilled asparagus which was also delicious. Then went with the shrimp enchilada plate. I will definitely be coming to this place again!! Service was A1 for me!!!!!!

Nick C.

Yelp
Really wanted to love this place. Have been twice and service has been sooooo bad. Both times. Our drinks literally took 40 minutes, even though there were two bartenders and the restaurant was not full. They didn't arrive until after we had finished our appetizers and our main courses were arriving. And there was no acknowledgment or apology offered. Probably best to order takeout from this place, because the food was actually decent.

Morgan M.

Yelp
mixe is brand new and already becoming a go-to spot for us. They're still working out the menu etc so please be patient. Food: Wonderful food! I will say they may need to work on the steak more in terms of not over cooking it but everything was amazing Ambience: It's giving a mix of brewery chill vibe and wine bar. I will say it was quite cold inside while we were there but it was also later and a little less crowded so maybe that's why? Service: Service is pretty good! I would say they need to be a little more attentive especially when there really weren't too many tables but they were SO NICE and accommodating!! We will absolutely be back .

Yelp
We had the pleasure of bringing in the New Year 2025 at Mixé. The festive spirit and uptown ambience made it memorable, even after drinking Mezcal shots and Mexican Mule cocktail (a tasty variation of my usual go to Moscow Mule). The food was irresistible, the spirits are top line, and the service was friendly and responsive. Definitely worth trying and repeating as an upscale venue for Oaxacan cuisine that satisfy the senses in the realm of Mexican food.

Quincy M.

Yelp
Found this place on Yelp looks 10 mins before we walked in! Didn't have dinner plans for Vday but so glad I found this place on the fly! Waiters were super nice and attentive. Drinks were good and food was surprisingly bomb. We had the nachos and shrimp flautas = YUM. I love the ambiance and decor also. Definitely coming back to try other menu items like their aguachile.

L C.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic! We were sad to see Calavera close but Mixé is even better. From the ambiance of the restaurant to the food itself, everything is incredible. The staff is also so so so friendly and welcoming. This is not a spot to miss!

Anna B.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Spicy delicious and fresh. Service was friendly and good. Bar was a little slow. Didn't get our margaritas until after entrees were served.

Jeff M.

Yelp
Unexpected. Great food and drinks. Reasonable prices. Best to stay inside as the atea can be a bit sketchy.
