The ambience is phenomenal--pierced atop the city, and albeit it's downtown, it's opulent and beautiful, with luxurious environs, the welcoming old school hospitality. We were gonna be in the city, downtown Union Square on a rare weekend and wanted to try a new place for weekend brunch. Though we'd passed by a zillion times, never ate here, till today. We ordered a bunch of stuff to share: 3 ingredient omelette: feta, spinach, salmon served with roasted breakfast potatoes and toast. Niçoise salad: haricot vert, black French olives, purple and gold potatoes, anchovies, red and green lettuces, anchovies, diced cucumber gold tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, drizzled with balsamic vinegar based dressing, and sesame crusted ahi. Fresh vibrant fish and produce ... The salad needed more sparkle and pizzaz, the dressing more oomph, acidity and sweet balance. The ingredients were just that: disparate ingredients where the sum was not more than its individual parts. The omelette, had fresh spinach and feta, but was not moist enough or cheesy enough for me, though the fluffy part was there. The breakfast potatoes were excellent, sautéed to a golden brown with charred edges, and I loved they served with little bottles bottles of Tabasco, a ramekin of soft melty butter, and ketchup, alongside individual jars of marmalade and strawberry preserves, the toast, folded into a napkin to keep warm. The prices are what you'd expect a the Four Seasons: pricey, and you're definitely not gonna come here expecting Denny's prices, or even the corner diner at the end of the block. I love also, that they had a varied menu selections, e.g. a fresh crab omelette, billed as the SF, but for those in the mood for something different, they also had one of my all time favorites: corned beef hash with eggs any style. If we go back, which isn't likely, only because I love trying new places, they also had a selection of sweet stuff, e.g. pancakes, French toast, and maybe even waffles, in addition to fresh ricotta donuts and cinnamon rolls, plus other healthier fare, e.g. think muesli with yogurt or oatmeal. Service genteel and warm, welcoming and gracious. Everyone went out their way to make sure we felt welcomed and got whatever we needed. The entrance to the restaurant, btw., is not off of Market street, their main entrance to the hotel, it's off the back alley of Stevenson Street, which is far more convenient.
