The 16 Best Breakfast Restaurants In Miami - Miami - The Infatuation

"MLK is a Liberty City classic with a steady stream of regulars who all seem to be on a first-name basis with the staff. The menu leans Southern soul food with a little bit of a Caribbean seafood influence. Anything on the menu with the word “fried” in it is the move—especially the fried fish options. The wings and waffles are also really good. This is a big takeout spot, but there are tables inside in case you want to eat there." - ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo, mariana trabanino

Service was really good. Felt like being at Nana's house and super down home. The value here is amazing. You get sizable portions for a reasonable price. Makes sense why the neighborhood comes here regularly. Several Ppl came in and were greeted by name. Food was tasty too. I got the smothered wings with home fries and pancakes with eggs and bacon. Wings were good and I forgot to take a picture. Came with gravy and onions over the wings. The home fries had bell peppers and onions mixed in. They were tasty too. I left feeling full and all the food ran me about 35 bucks. I got 2 large teas as well. All of it for under 40. I'd definitely come back no question.

OMG! 10/10, I highly recommend. The food, people and atmosphere made me feel like I was right at home. We ordered smothered chicken and catfish. Both meals came with grits and eggs. I normally don't eat grits but I found myself going back for seconds, thirds, fourth and more. We also ordered a side of pancakes and they were so fluffy and light. The ladies that hold down the front counter do it was grace, laughter and cheer. It was an experience that I would recommend to anyone if you're in the area. Thank you Google, you did your job this time. If and when, we are back in the area, we will DEFINITELY be back.

Google
This place should have at least 4.8 stars in my opinion. We had a super yummy breakfast (chicken + waffles, grits, fried catfish) and would come here all the time if we lived in Miami

Google
Food was good! My order was simple today. I had pork chops and home fries with onions. Good flavor. The time wait was not to bad. The workers were nice. A little more organization when it come to take out would be nice. I will definitely come back.

My first time going to the new location only went to the old location a couple of times as well! I ordered chicken and waffles with a side of grits. It was ok, nothing special Grits were ok, not creamy Waffle was made with cheap batter! It was very dense and heavy, and to top it off, you get this cheap syrup that tasted like medicine! I poured over the waffle before tasting it, and boy, what a big mistake and only finished half the waffle it was so nasty!! The fried chicken was better they were seasoned! They had a sitting area, but it was not being used by customers, only folk sitting around talking! Loud chatter or something coming out of the kitchen as well but sent out nothing special! I dont think I'll be going back!

If I could give a NEGATIVE-5 for customer service from the young lady(Crystal I believe) in the front I would. She was rude, unprofessional, and needs to watch how she talk to customers in front of other ppl. I came in at 9:05am & left out at 9:58am. The young lady took our order, while talking to customers, on the phone, and just not attentive as much. So the kitchen apparently made a Mistake which is understandable however, the courteous thing to have done was make us aware of the fact that food was running behind. I walked up to the counter thinking our food was ready several times and even had asked she not once mentioned that a mistake was made and a fried salmon instead of steamed one was bring out. I overheard the older lady who takes the orders as well, mention the mistake which prompted me to ask The young lady, she dismissed it as if that didn’t occur and stated she was waiting for my bf turkey bacon breakfast, which clearly shows that our ticket was neglected. I also asked her for sliced cheese and after checking my food I told her that & she shockingly said “ when you told me y’all food was almost done, what u want me to add it now?” as if I wasn’t waiting almost an hour. I understand it is a fast moving environment however, be courteous and pleasant to the ppl who are spending there hard earn money in these TRYING TIMES to support a black business. I live in Miramar and came all the way there to feel like I was just another dollar. So please talk to her about professionalism and being from “OVERTOWN” has nothing to do with being respectful and courteous. On a better note the Food was DELICIOUS. Kisses to the Chefs 😘 worth the wait but not worth the disgusting dismissive attitude.

Google
No thanks. I tried to dine in. Too much going on. White grocery bags were all over the counter. Food was better later.

Yelp
I actually stumbled on this place on accident and I'm glad that I did!! All I can say is I was ready to take a nap after ! Food was so good!! I had someone pick up up for me while I was at a football game so I don't know what the service was like. But even tho it was delivered it was so good when it got to me ! 10/10

Yelp
I loved the open arms welcoming vibe here! We came here after leaving another spot that didn't have a desirable breakfast menu. We were just leaving our cruise and had luggage, and the ladies at the front were like, heyyyy cousins, come on in! Lmaoooo so we came in and sat at a booth and stored our luggage in the back of the restaurant. We ordered ALOT. Fried catfish, smothered pork chops, fried chicken, grilled shrimp, GA sausage, various breakfast items. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS!!! I had them bookmarked for a while, I believe, but best believe whenever I'm in Miami, I will be stopping by, especially if I'm awake early enough. Lol

Yelp
A good spot for a delicious, no frills meal. I stopped in for Sunday brekkie around 9am. This place was busy and only kept getting busier. Dine in and take out orders were coming in left & right. This business is really supported by the local community. So much so that while you're trying to place your order, someone will come in and start up a conversation with the person taking your order, thus making the ordering process a bit longer than it should be. If you dine in, there are a couple dark tables and some gospel music playing. The food is cooked to order, and it's worth the wait. The prices aren't too bad, either. The bathroom was dark, but clean, and served it's purpose. I will for sure be back for those fried pork chops and grits. Yummmmm!

Yelp
First time here and I am well pleased. The staff greeted my husband and I the second we walked in with a lovely "welcome and good morning." The lady that took our order was patient and pleasant as we asked our questions. This is a place that I do recommend. My shrimp and grits were great. I also had some of my husband salmon croquettes.

Yelp
One of the worse places to eat in Miami hands down. Ordered my food 20 minutes ahead of time, just only to come in and wait nearly 45 minutes for my food, in which I mind you the food was terrible. The customer service was definitely ghetto and unacceptable and I definitely didn't feel safe. I definitely wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who values great customer service and great food. This place is the total opposite. I Definitely would never be coming back even if the owner offered me a million dollar credit.

Shauntay J.

Yelp
Ordered from here they slow and unprofessional will never order from here again. One girl was making a nail appointment while customers was in her face. Total disappointment

Yelp
I do NOT leave Miami without going here for breakfast! Food is hands down theeee best. Service is on point as well. It's like being in grandmom's kitchen with a lot of options.

Yelp
A Miami staple for great breakfast. I was in the area for Jury duty and had to take advantage. The ladies were sweet and welcoming. I love fried catfish and grits for breakfast and they delivered. Everything was amazing.

Yelp
Food didn't have the quality I expected, the turkey was not edible it was rock hard on top of that everything is charged separately i don't recommend this spot

Gene M.

Yelp
Small family business, Food was served fast & hot. Chicken and waffles were Excellent and the Salmon croquettes, Grits and eggs with toast and a side of split sausage was everything that I remembered on a nice Home cooked breakfast. Check this place out if your in the area it is a true gem.
google avatar

Yelp
Had breakfast at this location and it was the best. A bit pricey but worth the quality. It has all the breakfast has to offer.

Yelp
Literally we were on the way to another restaurant and saw this place. Decided to google it and the reviews confirmed it was a good choice. So we switched routes and stopped in. The menu has a good variety and there is something for everybody. We ordered the 'Salmon Croquettes' and the 'Steamed Snapper' both with eggs, grits & biscuits. The food was phenomenal, the reviews didn't lie, and we will definitely be visiting again!

Yelp
They never miss! The aunties and sisters run this place well! The food is good and always hot and fresh.

Yelp
So... when I travel, I'm a foodie. I love finding good food where the locals go. I watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown: Miami and he talked about MLK restaurant. I was excited because he talked highly of the food and I love supporting black businesses. We get here and its crowded. I was sure this was a good thing. Parking was challenging but after waiting a little, we found a spot. We found a table and our waitress brought us water to the table. Unfortunately, my water had a hair in it. Instead of being apologetic, the waitress shrug it off and gave me another cup as if she was bothered about me informing her of the hair in my cup. We were kind of rushed to order but the service was still very slow. I ordered chicken and waffles. Average at best. The chicken was great but the waffle was basic. Nothing special about it. My boyfriend had grilled shrimp and grits. The shrimp was ok but the grits was bland and not as thick as I'm used to. Paying was a pain because we had to ask for our check multiple times before my boyfriend ended up having to go to the counter to get the bill and pay. I'm all for my black businesses but customer service needs to be a priority. Disappointed.

Yelp
When we first walked in the restaurant was PACKED. We almost walked out but decided to give it a try. You just have to get in where you fit in. The only way I can describe this place is hood with a touch of home. If you don't know what I mean go to the restaurant and find out. This is pretty much a diner style restaurant with southern breakfast & comfort food. It was 3 of us, and instead of waiting for a booth to become available we just sat at a two-seater until one became available. Thé food was good. I felt like I was eating a home cooked breakfast. I got waffles, bacon, and home fries; someone else got corn beef hash, grits, eggs, and toast; and the last person got boiled fish (grouper), grits, and johnny cake. We all enjoyed our meals. Bacon is bacon, so it was cooked perfectly. The home fries were well seasoned and cooked through. The waffle (not pictured because it took forever) was nice, fluffy, and not too sweet. I don't know what type of hospitality some of the salty reviewers were hoping to get but I got exactly what I expected. Of course, they can improve on the functionality of the restaurant but I feel as though they focus on serving and supporting their community which is important. I'd definitely come back.

Yelp
Excellent staff, great food, and very quick. Call in my order and it was ready in less than 30 minutes..and they is very convenient sit on a main avenue in Miami 17 ave...A must go to when you in Miami

Yelp
I no longer work in the area so I hadn't been here since they relocated to the new location, but since I was in the area I thought I'd drop in. The new spot seems a little smaller, but a few familiar faces Ms Kay & Gino were still here. With that being said let me get straight to the point...the food hasn't changed, it's still just as good as it has ever been. Everything is made to order so there is a slight wait...but it's definitely worth it. I ordered the fried snapper with cheese grits and eggs and as usual everything was perfect. If you are in the area or want a delicious soul food breakfast you can't be this spot. P.S. nobody makes a better flop (tea/lemonade)

Yelp
So I had to leave a review because of all of the "disgruntled" reviews if you will. If you're looking for a "fancy" restaurant like KeKe's in Orlando, this is not it. If you're looking for something "chic" like Another Broken Egg in Pines, this is not it. If you're looking for something equivalent to your grandmothers breakfast on Sunday morning, baby it doesn't get any better than this. While the two aforementioned restaurants may be bigger and a little more "upscale", their food in no way shape or form compares to MLK. MLK is like walking into your grandmothers house and seeing all your cousins waiting for the food to be done. You all may complain that it's taking awhile but when it comes no one has time to complain because you're too busy stuffing your faces. Yes parking is not ideal. Yes the restaurant is a whole in the wall but you will not be disappointed about the food. I guarantee you that!! So don't pay attention to rest and try the best breakfast you'll probably find in the "not so good neighborhood".
google avatar

KayCee S.

Yelp
When I say true homecooking breakfast food it was very good. I had the porkchop breakfast everything was seasoned very well also looked great & good portion size. The only thing I didn't like a little was the porkchop type very petty lol. Other than that you would definitely get my business again.

Yelp
This is a nice neighborhood resturant. Lots of the meals come with grits, which is a plus in my book. I got the shrimp and grits. There was a bit of a mix up with the waitress and whether or not I ordered steamed or grilled shrimp, but there was an order of each at the table and both were good. Service was a bit slow, but I'm guessing that's because it was a busy morning. And a Wednesday at that... This is a nice neighborhood place, but not somewhere I'd frequent during my trips to the area. The food took quite a while to come out as well. This is a trend I've noticed that occurs el with black owned businesses.

Eva S.

Yelp
Let me just say this restaurant is worth the wait and the drive!!! It's a traditional black owned breakfast spot! They are super busy so have to have patiences when ordering. I had the shrimp with home fries with onions and peppers and scrambled eggs the shrimp was so good the home fries were exceptional. They were well seasoned they were cooked perfectly and everything was delicious. I also ordered pancakes it was super fluffy and delicious. I also had oatmeal and it was great !!! And also I highly recommend the fried flounder with the grits and cheese. Definitely a hidden gem in Miami

Yelp
This is my kinda spot! While it wasn't anything fancy, I loved every minute of it. First, no it's not in the best neighborhood. To me, that's what gave it so much character. Parking is wack, and if you don't time it right, you'll have to park on the side street. But we caught another patron leaving, so it worked out. BFF and I were greeted with a hardy "Good morning! Have a seat anywhere you'd like and I'll be right over!" And by the time we pulled off our jackets, she was there. We asked for suggestions, and she sat down in the booth and showed us her favorites on the menu and what they come with. It was like being served by family. It was pretty busy, and almost every seat at the breakfast bar was occupied. Most folks got their meals to go, as you could see a decent flow of traffic march straight to the register. The speakers were bumping some old school R&B, and you couldn't help to bop your heads and sing along while you browse the menu. We were both in the mood for seafood, so we got the catfish and eggs, and the shrimp and eggs. Both came steaming hot, with our eggs made just like we like them. My coffee was piping hot and fresh, which is hard to come by in a busy establishment. We love everything about this place, and will definitely recommend it to others.

Diane Y.

Yelp
This food was soooo good OMG !!!!!!! if ever in Miami FL please please try this black owned restaurant it was absolutely delicious..
google avatar

Jahmal P.

Yelp
This is your mommas breakfast breakfast brunch spot home cooking comfort food. You feel welcomed even though they don't know you and the food is great. Ordered takeout French toast and fried catfish with grits and eggs and a side order of shrimp in sauce. The French toast was good to the last bite, grits were cooked perfectly as would be expected. Even the scrambled eggs with good with the regular toast it came with. What can I say about the catfish? Well seasoned and nicely breaded with some cornmeal and flour. When ever I'm in Miami this is my breakfast spot from now on. It's good to have breakfast spots in different city's so when ever your in town you check it out and know you won't be disappointed.

M D.

Yelp
Very good spot for breakfast food! The staff is lovely and hard working. Manager is nice as well.
google avatar

JazzJ J.

Yelp
Just plain good country breakfast. I have been ordering from here often since COVID-19 and was happy to know they were on food delivery apps. The salmon croquettes are some of the best I've ever had besides my mom. Their omelets are very tasty I've tried all of them. I highly recommend them for breakfast you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Blak B.

Yelp
Best place for some southern cooking! Breakfast that is! if you wanna get your grits and smothered on then this is the joint for you. keep in mind there is almost always a wait to be seated but its worth every minute! Once that boiled fish unite with your taste buds you will forget all about your troubles. Not to mention my mom "Ms. G" is the best chef there. POW
google avatar

Tamaru T.

Yelp
Went to Burger King for French toast for my little ones and asked the worker if there were any good soul food breakfast restaurant in the area. Her reply " MLK, but it's in the city." Me: "the city city? Liberty city?" Worker "yea" Me: " Say no more, it has to be good". I called ahead because unlike most reviewers on here, I know Black owned soul food restaurants take forever because the food in most cases is cooked to order rather than sitting under a heating lamp. Tuh. I ordered the smothered chicken wings and grits with a side of bacon. The person that answered the phone was pleasant and polite, which was an immediate plus for me. I was told the food would be ready in 25 mins which was cool. Within the given time frame I went and got my food and I was pleased. The food brought me back to my grandmas kitchen. Good portion. Good Home cooked breakfast, filling, and polite customer service. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
My husband and I were in Miami last September 2019 4 the Ravens vs. Dolphins football game. He is great about seeking out great places 4 us to eat on Yelp. We got up early this day 4 our trip to the hood to get us some southern food 2 eat...well MLK restaurant did not disappoint! Although the restaurant did not look like much on the inside, the food truly made up 4 it. It is a small local spot that has several locals inside. They seemed to know immediately that we were not from Miami, yet they chatted with us across the room(I mean literally we were having a conversation with several guests who were seated all the way across the room) about Baltimore and about the game. The food finally arrived at the table and it was one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. It must be a "thing" there 2 pair fish with breakfast. I ordered the fried catfish with grits and my husband had grouper with eggs and grits. This place could have received a 5/5 ,but I am a stickler 4 cleanliness and the condiments' holder on the table was filthy. Oh, Ladies if u r interested in some knock off designer bags, there was a local selling them inside of the store when u walked in. U gotta love the hood!

Yelp
First time visit. I had the Chicken and Waffles. Very very good!! They make feel at home and good service! Say hello to Cathy!!

Yelp
This place is absolutley amazing everything I have ever ordered here hen I visit has been ON POINT not to mention the service absolutely exceptional! I dont mind waiting at all even though I've never had to wait long. But it is sure worth it!

Yelp
I came here for brunch yesterday, and what a better time to come visit this iconic Miami eatery. MLK serves a mix of southern American and Bahamian flavors, truly representing the original Miami culture. My dish of choice was shrimp and grits, which is a classic that needs no explanation, but suffice to say it was exactly what you would expect from great comfort food. Don't expect anything fancy here, but do expect awesome food, generous portions, good prices, nice decor, friendly service, and the warmth of a true local/neighborhood eatery. I recomendable this place and look forward to my next visit.
google avatar

Sergio G.

Yelp
Walked in and sat down. 30 minutes waiting and no one even bothered to address the table. Waiter addressed neighboring table and didn't even bother.
google avatar

Amber L.

Yelp
MLK is one of a decreasing number of southern-style breakfast spots in Miami. I'm glad that they are holding on strong even as others disappear. MLK is well known for their down home breakfasts. Staples like hot grits, boiled fish, smoked sausage and chicken wings keep customers like me coming back for more. The grits are cooked to the perfect just-thick consistency with the right amount of salt thrown in the water. Nothing worse than grits cooked in saltless water - you can never add enough salt after the fact. The grits are the framework of a good southern breakfast and MLK does them right. I wish they were served with real butter because the margarine they are served with does not melt, but that's a minor issue. I usually get the fried wings breakfast, which includes grits, eggs and toast. The wings are cooked perfectly, with the right amount of seasoning and a nice crunchy coat. The eggs and toast are standard. I don't come to MLK as often as I'd like. Why? Because this spot is on the smaller side but as popular as they come, it is always packed. You can barely move around, much less get a table. There is always a wait - you're gonna wait for a table, you're gonna wait for the food, you're gonna wait for the check. I'm not always up for all that waiting. The hours here are very limited (they really only serve breakfast and some lunch items, although I think plans may be in the works to start dinner service), parking is available but can get very tight and the coffee needs a lot of work. But I do find myself there ever so often when I want to get a good breakfast while being fully entertained. MLK is kind of like the meeting spot. I always bump into extended members of my family there. My mom bumps into her old highschool classmates. There's a pretty popular gentleman that sells various items at the front of the restaurant (he sometimes takes up valuable table space, but that's neither here nor there). I think that's the huge draw for MLK: If you're from this community, you'll get a hot plate of some stick-to-your-ribs breakfast and some feel-good to start your day off right. Not many places serving up all of that for a reasonable price these days.
google avatar

Brad C.

Yelp
Reason for 3 stars. Food was alright. Nothing special. Waiting can take awhile bc everything is made fresh. My wife was a bit more discontented than I bc her omelet that she thought would have cheese in it only had melted cheese slices on top of it. It is a cheap alternative to everything in town tho and atmosphere was pleasant. Our waitress was very pleasant.
google avatar

Isela C.

Yelp
The food was pretty good and the people were really nice. Also it's cheap but the quality is good !

Foster F.

Yelp
They have great selections. My only complaint is they need to season their fish. It's always bland! I've tried it multiple times and it's always the same bland taste. Love their liver and grits! Just cook the grits a little longer.
google avatar

Ciara M.

Yelp
This is good hood eats! Do not go to MLK with high expectations on great service m. This place is always slammed and only have 3 waitress but you will get your food. They will be nice to you. I recommend patience. The food is always good never had a moment where I didn't like something. It's super cheap great breakfast. Get a lemonade and fruit punch flop! You won't forget it

John S.

Yelp
Shout out to my waitress Miss Kathy! Had the catfish, cheese grits, toast, salmon cakes and an order of fried chicken to go. Don't forget the "flop" half ice tea/lemonade. Delicious.... and cheap! Made me feel like I was back at home I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Miami

Marquel R.

Yelp
This place is always on point, never miss. Pancakes and waffles could be better, a little dry but other than that. On point ! They just don't miss
google avatar

De'Von J.

Yelp
MLK has the worse customer service. Sad part it's been like that for years. The food is good, but the waitresses that are not behind the counter are horrible. They act like they don't want to be there, they move slow, don't greet you when you walk in. One time I went it was over ten minutes, before I had to say something to get someone's attention
google avatar

Cathy C.

Yelp
Nothing fancy just good food !!! We came here to get away from the crappy food around south beach and was definitely worth the 10 min ride !!!

Mj L.

Yelp
I had the chicken and waffles and they were absolutely terrible!!! Chicken was raw and waffles were dry.... Never Eating Here AGAIN!!!!
google avatar

Daisia E.

Yelp
MLK Restaurant was small, but mighty‼ We ordered chicken waffles eggs, liver w onions grits, grouper, snapper everything was cooked to perfection. Our waitress was friendly and inviting. Bless the cook and all the souls involved in bringing together such a beautiful establishment. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Baby when I tell you! This is what I needed in my life after catching a 5 am flight from Houston on 2 hours of sleep. I had the grouper, eggs and grits. My hubby had the chicken and waffles. In the REAL part of Miami. Food was really good. I have 4 stars cause it's an old restaurant that could use some polishing, but they do offer you the option for dinner wear or plastic wear for your food to. E served in.

Yelp
Great soul food restaurant! The boiled fish is the best! Always busy, so get there early.

Yelp
We noticed alot of traffic in and out of this place. And since we love local eats when we travel, it was a must. When we walked in, we were greeted by all the staff at the front counter. That was really reassuring. The menu is not huge, but there are so many good choices. I ordered the Corn Beef Hash with Grits, Eggs, and Toast. Hubby had the Fried Pork Chops with Eggs and Home Fries. We also order Half and Half (Tea & Lemonade) The food was cooked to order and smelled soooooooo good. We couldn't wait until we got back to our hotel room. About a 15 minute drive away. My food was great. There was one exception, hence the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. There were large egg shells in my scrambled eggs. There were three instances where I was pulling shells out of my mouth. That was the only issue. Hubby loved his food as well. Very well seasoned Chops and Potatoes. And that Half and Half was so good and sweet!! We will definitely keep this place on our radar for future trips to MIA!

Yelp
I have never been to a black owned business with so disorganization but so much credibility in its surroundings neighborhood. My first visit and I was left very upset displeased and disgusted by the lack of professionalism and urgency. I am very disappointed. I am also convinced that the good views are written by close friends and family because every customer inside of restaurant was not happy with the service or the food.

Yelp
They have improved a lot! I can honestly say I enjoy the food better now than I did at the other location. I can eat here often now and they're right on the next block from me.
