M.Manze Tower Bridge Review - Bermondsey - London - The Infatuation

"Alongside Cooke, the Manze name is to pie and mash what the Rouxs are to haute French cuisine. You can find the beautifully tiled, time capsule restaurants in , Elephant and Castle, and . But it’s the original on Tower Bridge Road we find ourselves most drawn to. Long brown booths, green checkerboard tiles, fizzing chilli vinegar, and everyone’s addressed as “darlin”. The suet leans soggy but the mixture is pleasingly traditional, especially alongside smears of almost-smooth mash. With the right dusting of salt and pepper this is a plate that can be quickly shovelled down, and you can even finish with a scoop of Manze’s ice cream.  " - Jake Missing

Pie and Mash Shops in London | London’s Best Pie and Mash | Eater London

"Opened by Luigi Manze, Michaele’s brother, in 1929, L. Manze on Walthamstow High Street is one of London’s most attractive pie shops in terms of interior. Run by the Manze family until 1970, the grade-II listed building has a terrazzo floor, marble table tops and booth seating. As for the food, pies are available in two sizes and although they’re some of the city’s more expensive, they’re also some of the best on offer." - Jonathan Hatchman

Had a vegetarian pie mash and liquor with big splash of chilli vinegar. I think my pie was defrosted and warmed in microwave as the pastry was a little tough. I would suggest company invests in an air fryer

I have been coming to this pie mash for many years and the food is great, sadly on this occasion for some reason there was butter and milk in the mash which should not be the case in any pie mash shop. The mash is usually dry, therefore I with eat in again but instead will get it to go and make my own mash 🤨 it has left me with a sickly feeling!

Helpful, friendly staff. Decent food and nice experience. Functional dining, with bench tables as expected. Fast service, but we went early, so few people, but no issue with atmosphere. Shame no eel taster option, so had to buy a bowl, but hey....🙂

M.Manze is a must visit for pie mash! There are three branches of Manzes but since Peckham was far away and there are too many distractions in London so I went to Sutton. As a foodie I am trying to dine at all the pie and mash shops in London because I just love pie and mash. Pie and mash originates from East London where they serve Pie, mash and eel. On this visit, I just had the pie mash so next time I shall return for the jellied eels because I am addicted to the jelly which is heaven when you put lashings of vinegar and pepper on it. As I was late due to the traffic I only had a pie and liquor to be quick. Normally I have the regular beef pie but since they had the vegan soya mince version I decided to have that instead because not all pie mash shops have a vegetarian version. Adding salt, white pepper and chili vinegar makes the pie really moreish because it makes the pastry more flavourful. The white pepper really takes it to the next level when it is mixed with the liquor and vinegar. Although the soya mince doesn't have much flavour but once you add the condiments everything goes together perfectly. I am so glad that pie mash is one of the things that is traditionally served with white pepper because chefs don't use white pepper these days, they all use black pepper which is so different. Black pepper is nice but white pepper shouldn't be forgotten just like delicious pie mash. The only thing I didn't like were the plants with deliveroo on it because it just ruined the traditional appearance of Manze. I understand they deliver for them but perhaps they are too modern and just don't look good together.

Shop is located in Sutton’s pedestrianised main street opposite Asda. Well-designed traditional shopfront, you can’t miss it. The dish has an unusual taste - similar to that of pickled herring, but with a softer texture, mild and somewhat salty. But hey, it’’s fish! Great with mash, accompanied by vinegar and white pepper. Used to be the working-class favorite .. just chopped and boiled eels with vinegar, sliced onion, peppercorns, bay leaves, and salt. The staff at Manze’s are a great team that produces such lovely food. This is a nutritious meal. Pie and mash shops are no longer a common sight on London's streets – these eateries deserve our support

I’m afraid the pie was just a lump of overwizzed meat with NO gravy. I wish I could upload a photo
