Best Japanese Restaurants Seattle - Eater Seattle

"Yes, patrons can get savory selections like Japanese curry, udon, and sushi here, but the bigger draw are the desserts from Setsuko Pastry. They’re sweet, but not too sweet, often balanced by a hit of bitterness from matcha and other ingredients. Favorites include green tea roll cake (sponge cake wrapped around azuki bean paste and fresh cream), strawberry shortcake, purple sweet potato cheesecake, and mochi brownies." - Jay Friedman, Jade Yamazaki Stewart

Google
I have been wanting to try this takeout place and it exceeded my expectations! 🍣 sushi here are so well prepared; fresh but they have umami flavors! It’s best to order ahead, and it was worth the extra step. This will be favorite place for pickups.

Yes!!!!! I'll say it again for the people in the back- yyyyaaaaeeeesaassssss! So cute, so good! Yeeeaaaassss! It's that time of the year again where restaurant week reigns supreme, and this time they didn't miss! I had their restaurant week special which was a salmon box. Everything was perfect, especially the salmon belly, grilled salmon and salmon sashimi! Everything was fresh tasty and out of this world. Despite this location doubling as a bakery, they know how to make sushi and prepare wonderful pastries. The matcha cheesecake was superb with plenty of fresh matcha powder on top and mung beans on the bottom. This was easily my favorite matcha desert ever! While they don't have indoor seating, I saw two small tables outside. I'll be going back and happy freaking restaurant week!

Cozy, clean atmosphere. Good food and delicious desserts! Very nice neighborhood restaurant. I like their Poke bowl, Salmon teriyaki set, some happy hour menus. Their desserts are superb. Everything is tasty without feeling sugar heavy. Highly recommend!! Family friendly, street parking only. Went back to my favorite restaurant. We had Spicy poke bowl, curry, Kimono roll and desserts. Spicy poke bowl was not spicy enough for my taste but it was good because I can taste each ingredients. It was not too saucy nor salty like other places that serve poke. Really good. Curry is also very good here. It comes with a small salad and potato salad. One of my favorite dessert is Yuzu panna cotta which has a delicate flavor with a hint of yuzu. Not too heavy.

They have a very tasty chirashi bowl with a good variety of fish. Takeout only.

Originally went in to get desserts but the food menu was too tempting. Slid in a minute before happy hour ended, very nice of them to give us the happy hour deals. Got an assorted sashimi salad with fresh fish and a savory dressing on it, 3pc hamachi carpaccio with some yuzu was very refreshing, and the mini salmon Don had a decent amount of fresh salmon along with warm rice. In the end treated ourselves with salmon Toro nigiri, which was phenomenally buttery and rich. Got desserts: rich creamy custard pudding with a delicious caramel sauce, and a matcha tiramisu with azuki on the bottom. Also got a strawberry mochi daifuku to go, which was devoured in an instant. Will definitely come again! Cute restaurant vibes and good staff. However definitely understaffed and service was a bit slow.

Google
I have tried three different desserts, all very disappointing. The sushi, etc is inconsistent at best, nasty brown avocado, really? Surprised Modern is still in business.

Google
Delicious sushi specials and grilled options! Cute atmosphere, but kinda small so make sure to come during a quieter time. Next time I'll have to try the baked goods they make...

Google
Lovely store and employees! Got some great suggestions for bentos for the family. The food was delicious and nutritious! They also sell some goods like bags and cups which were very cute.

Yelp
I bought a came here for my boyfriends birthday. It was super easy process, I just ordered online and showed up the day of and it was ready! The cake was super cute and decorated nicely. It was the perfect size we needed. Everyone enjoyed it. The texture was super light and airy and the cream was so yummy. We got the chiffon fruit cake. I would definitely order from here again. This is exactly what I wanted.

Yelp
We picked up a couple of cake, matcha cheesecake and strawberry roll cake. Our favorite was matcha cheesecake. It was creamy yet light. Strawberry roll cake was a very moist sponge with whipped cream and strawberries on top.

Yelp
Can only review for their cake takeout! My husband and I made a quick stop here and got the matcha cheesecake! Absolutely delicious and wish we had bought two slices instead of only one! Service was friendly and checkout was quick.

Yelp
Wonderful little bake shop serving authentic Japanese baked goods. The cheesecake here was so good and balanced (not too sweet), and it's clear that everything is made handmade with love. The owners are really friendly, and they have a beautiful assortment of cakes, rolls, pannacotta, mochi, and other terrific Japanese items. I will definitely be back for more!

Yelp
ordered a cake here for my partner's birthday and we both loved it!! bought the strawberry shortcake with a custom message and it was incredibly fluffy, moist, and the perfect balance of sweetness. would highly rec enjoying with some hot tea. i definitely want to come back at try the other treats. i stopped by on a Saturday afternoon and didn't have too much trouble parking. people working there were very kind. thank you to the baker who helped make the day special!

Yelp
The pastries and sweets here are delicious! I recommend the Yuzu Pannacotta. The owner is really nice! It's combined with Modern Japanese Cuisine, so grab some sushi while you're there! The shops are take-out only, so plan ahead.

Yelp
Food and service review here since It's an out of the way location for me but close enough to one of my favorite coffee shops in Seattle (on a different review of course). I ordered their matcha green tea cheesecake for a birthday celebration and had ordered over the phone a few days before pickup. The cake itself was beautiful and was one of the best green tea desserts I've ever had. The matcha flavor wasn't overpowering and the creaminess and sweetness were beautifully sublime. While I went to pick up my order (they offer online line ordering and curbside pickup), I had picked up other slices of the cakes and desserts. Their strawberry roll cake and chocolate mochi brownie were so good as well. I'll definitely come back to try their other offerings.

Yelp
Please note that this review is just for the yummylicious Green Tea Strawberry cake :) I have to admit, Setsuko Pastry makes a kickass birthday cake! Ordered a green tea strawberry cake here for my mom's birthday and overall, it was a tasty treat. Loaded with fresh strawberries, the cake itself was flavorable in its rich matcha (slightly bitter) taste. This contrasted pretty well with the layers of creme inside and overall, the cake itself wasn't too sweet. Texture wise, the cake was light and fluffy and not too try. As for the cake size, it's around 9in and as I was informed, it was the only cake size available. Flavor Options: There is an option to get other flavors for the cake, so make sure to ask if green tea isn't your thing! Cost of the cake~ Roughly around $55 with tax included With the cake being so good, I would definitely will swing by again to try out the different desserts here! :)

Yelp
Cute Japanese bakery with the delicious, Japanese baked goods you'd expect. Love that this cafe is open later than others of its kind, and while it was small, I had no problem finding a seat. Though after dinner many of their desserts were sold out. Will be back to try more yummies.

Yelp
They have some room for improvement for sure. I've ordered online. Cheesecake and yuzu panacotta we're delicious. However, flourless cake, sweet custard and mochi were flavorless with weird texture. I would definitely order again just for the yuzu panacotta though or to check a regular cake.

Yelp
Got the matcha strawberry 9 inch fruit sponge cake as a birthday cake, it was just like the picture, and is VERY FLAVORFUL, the flavor blend works very well. I definitely want to try their other cakes.

Yelp
Under reviewed and is a Seattle hidden gem. Why doesn't Seattle know about this place? Maybe because it's tiny and is adjoined to a sushi joint. 4/2/2018 As of this date, there are 9 reviews, and 2 are from Canada. They need a little bit of love. Light fluffy Japanese style desserts. I went for the matcha stuff. I like matcha. One critique: it's inside the restaurant and the sashimi smell can be a bit overwhelming for some peeps to have dessert inside.

Yelp
Came by Setsuko Pastry recently and glad I checked them out. It's a small little pastry shop inside of Modern Japanese Cuisine restaurant. Same address. So you can have dinner and get some wonderful pastries later. Located off Phinney Ave in, well you guessed it....Phinney Ridge. It may be a little tough to find so just look for the address and you'll do fine. I came by to get a few pastry treats so I perused the counter display and decided to get one of their Plain Baked Cheesecake slices because I can be basic like that. It was pretty good, nice & light, creamy, plain and simple. Also got one of their Green Tea Cheesecakes which also was tasty. I'm not a big fan of green tea but this was pretty good and would get it again. For me, it was pretty light in the green tea flavor which is perfect for me. Nice & light, smooooove texture and well made. Lastly, I got one of the specials of the day and got one of their Pound Cake w/Strawberry Cream. Once again, nice & light, pretty simple but delicious. All of the pastries were not overly sweet and that's one of the reasons I like Japanese pastries so much. Not heavy and on the lighter side. Prices are around $5 or so each, staff was very nice & friendly, nice greetings and goodbyes. Definitely would come back to try more stuff, great small business inside of another small business.

Yelp
Cutest bakery with delicious cakes and mochi. Super unassuming, take out only when I went.

Diane W.

Yelp
The matcha strawberry shortcake really is pretty much perfect. It is also still good after a few days in the fridge. Most cakes get a little dry while the frosting toughens Also tried a few other sweets: tiramisu, pudding, etc. other things were fine but I wouldn't go out of my way for them Definitely would come back to order the cake for a birthday

Yelp
Been spending more time in Ballard since taking our pup to puppy school, so I've been trying to expand my food horizons. Was looking up pastries on Yelp and came across this gem. Located in phinney, it's inside of modern Japanese cuisine. They have a small refrigerated pastry case up front upon walking in filled with cheesecakes, mousse, tiramisu, and roll cake. I got a few Japanese cheesecake slices, matcha cheesecake, tiramisu, matcha tiramisu, and a couple of strawberry roll cake slices. Everything was delicious, creamy, light, and not overly sweet. Took a couple of items to my parents and they loved it and didn't want to share. If you're looking for desserts that aren't as rich as traditional desserts, definitely check this place out.

Yelp
Visited for the first time and really enjoyed their desserts! The flavors were light and not too sweet. The textures were smooth and creamy. Even though I live in West Seattle I would definitely make the trip back out to try a few other delectable bites!

Jinxuan Q.

Yelp
Super grateful to have this green tea tiramisu cake. Tasting is so amazing. The balance between matcha's biterness and sweet it's so perfect. Thank you Setsuko :)

Stephen W.

Yelp
Outstanding pastries. Not overly sweet and and very light and fluffy gluten free chocolate cake. We also had the matcha green tea roll, also excellent. Highly recommend

Yelp
I just want to sending my thanks for your awesome birthday cake which my husband ordered for me. I am a crazy green-tea lover. I have to say your green-tea birthday cake made my day and made my birthday overflowed with graceful. Thank you!

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of Japanese-style sweets. I love their natural flavors and sweetened azuki paste more than anything in the world! When I had heard there was a Japanese-Western-style baker in town, I knew I had to find goods from Setsuko Pastry! I found slices of her cakes when I stumbled into Modern Japanese Cuisine in Phinney Ridge tonight. Each slice was $5 and is well worth it if you love not-too-sweet desserts! I got a slice of the kabocha (Japanese pumpkin) cheesecake and the purple sweet potato cake and they were both great. They also had fresh strawberry mochi, green tea roll cake, and other goodies in the glass case at the front of Modern Japanese Cuisine--all gorgeous looking, of course!

Yelp
I preordered a whole matcha cake for my sister's birthday. It did not taste as expected. There was not much matcha flavor and cream felt too heavy and this cake would clog up the artery if I had to finish a whole slice. It was a bummer I couldnt get her a good cake. I will only order bday cakes from places I've actually tried from now on. A whole cake was expensive too, I believe it was over $55 and cash only. 2 stars for owner taking my order on the day of.

Theo K.

Yelp
The best matcha shortcake I have ever had. My family is very particular about sweetness of desserts - most cakes are too saccharine. Usually, we get a strawberry shortcake from our local Korean or Chinese bakeries, but they're oftentimes still too sweet. This matcha shortcake is subtly sweet with a wonderful fluffy softness and intriguing depth of flavor from the tea. Exquisitely made, great with tea or wine. I don't feel the gross sugar-high after eating a slice or two, which is rare to find. Additionally, their yuzu panna cotta is light, yet rich and delicious. My entire extended family will definitely be ordering more!

Yelp
My favorite cake shop in the Seattle area~ The service here is really nice and friendly. I came here to buy some cakes on my birthday, and the lady behind the counter had a lot of suggestions. I really liked the matcha cake. Very yummy.

Yelp
Tried their desserts with my friend on weekend afternoon. It was located near the zoo and the Green Lake. Nice sunshine so we chose to sit near the window. We had snow beauty, yuzu and mochi. Snow beauty was a slice of matcha cheesecake. The white and green color combination was a delight and it tasted really yummy! Mochi was their special, which had red beans in it. Sweet inside and soft outside, the mochi was delicious too.

Anna T.

Yelp
I got the strawberry shortcake for my micro wedding and it was amazing! Not too sweet and full of fresh strawberries. Our guests also loved the cake. Many were trying to go back for seconds but we only had 1 piece of cake left. We tried out other bakeries before we made our final decision and I am so happy we went with Setsuko!

Yelp
Love everything about Setsuko Pastry. So much matcha to be had in wonderful baked goods. I loved the tiramisu, eaten on the back patio, shrouded by bamboo planters. This quaint establishment makes me very happy.

Liancheng S.

Yelp
Booked a birthday cake here for my wife. Green tea plus strawberry. Taste amazing. My wife loves it very much!!

Daniel D.

Yelp
Their online ordering sucks. I ordered a cake for my birthday from here and the first time I tried the order seemingly didn't go through. I reached out through email if they received my order and never heard back. I tried to place another order and it went through and I got an email. When I went to pickup my cake, they told me I had two. I thought they mixed me up with another order so I took 1 cake home. They then proceeded to text me and ask if I was picking up my other order, guilt tripping me by saying I placed two orders so I had to pick up the second one. So I ended up paying an extra $60 for a cake I didn't even want. Not worth it for the quality. Don't plan on coming back here.

Yelp
Japanese pastries are my favorite type. I tried the green tea roll and cheesecake. They were out of the strawberry roll, which I tried to order but it required a few days notice. I had not heard of the restaurant that's within the same space which looks equally good to the pastry shop so I'll have to return to support it too. All in all, super stoked Setsuko has added to the selection of Japanese pastries in Seattle. They sell little sake cups at great prices too.
google avatar

Hanna H.

Yelp
I tried driving here once, and couldn't find it!!! This was because Setsuko Pasty is INSIDE another restaurant-- a sushi place that I can't recall the name of. (Sorry). I ordered green tea cheese cake, strawberry mochi, and Fresh fruit cake. The green tea cheesecake was AMAZING! like a mousse, but not overpowering with the green tea flavor. You couldn't really tell that it was a cheesecake either as it was so mild, and it did not feel heavy or overly sweet! the fresh fruit was similar to any other asian fruit cake, which I love. finally, the strawberry mochi was delicious as well! The mochi could have been a little softer, but I wont complain as I can't seem to find these ichigo mochi anywhere!

Yelp
I've known the patisserie, Setsuko, since she used to work at Saiko Bakery in the Ave at UW. Since then she opened up her own wholesale pastry business. You get to taste her pastries at selected restaurants listed on her website and buy her delicious pudding at selected retail stores. Setsuko also open her booth at local events to sell few of her pastries items if you want to give it a try. I know she makes delicious authentic Japanese cakes and I encourage you to give her a call for special occasions cake order.

Danielle C.

Yelp
Fantastic. I have tried the Snow Beauty (matcha cheesecake), cheesecake, purin (Japanese pudding with caramel sauce, I think it was labeled creme caramel pudding), and matcha tiramisu. The tiramisu substitutes not only the cocoa with matcha but also the macerated lady fingers with azuki beans so it's quite different than tiramisu but delicious. My favorite is the Snow Beauty- the flavors and textures are so perfectly balanced and elegant.
google avatar

Shawn J.

Yelp
Setsuko is a local pastry chef and she is donating 20% of sales of her Strawberry Roll Cakes to Japan this month. Please spread the news to your friends if they might be interested.

O S.

Yelp
I have a sweet tooth. Their cakes are not too sweet and look beautiful. I especially love Strawberry roll cake!!!
