LA Times Critic Finds ‘Lebanese Basics Done Right’ at Mona’s Kitchen - Eater LA

"First, critic Bill Addison ventured into the Valley to Mona's Kitchen, where owner George Marjik 'pulls off plenty of these dishes with a level of finesse that makes the restaurant worth a jaunt for lovers of Lebanese cuisine.' Plus, there's plenty of history: Addison labels Mona's meats as the star of the menu." - Mona Holmes

Mona’s Kitchen has some solid Lebanese food, and the service was friendly and quick. However, a few dishes could have been better the flavors felt a bit muted compared to what I expected. Still a good spot overall, just not quite amazing.

Google
I truly love this place. Every time have been there I left completely satisfied and satiated :) Best mixed grill I've ever had! The hummus is fresh and tastes like the way its made in the middle east. Not a bad thing to say about Mona's.

Jennifer Svonkin

Google
It makes me sad that more people don't know about this hidden gem because the food is absolutely delicious, and the service is outstanding. My boyfriend and I usually share the mixed grill, and with the salad and hummus, it's more than enough. The meat and rice are so flavorful, the salad is always fresh and crisp, and even the boneless chicken breast is tender and juicy. If you love Middle Eastern food, you will love Mona's!

Google
Ordered for pick up. Food was delicious. We ordered the gyro pitas and it seems like they take pride in their ingredients and recipes. Pitas seemed small but they were filling and very flavorful. Meat was perfectly seasoned and the sauce was perfect. Perfect road meal. Came with a side of pickles and banana peppers. $$ considering inflation. Would definitely come back

Google
This place is nice to dine in with your kids as the atmosphere is fantastic, besides the fresh, yummy, healthy food. Try it, and you will like it. It is clean and good service. I recommend for everyone who wants to enjoy food and place . By the way, it represents sweet home food for everyone, especially Lebanese

Google
Food had good flavor, but for the price, the sandwich is small in my opinion. They also added way too much sauce inside, at the first bite it literally popped open from the side and sauce got everywhere.

Google
I’ve been coming here for shawarma for several years now, it’s simply the best! The ingredients are always fresh, the seasoning is perfectly balanced, and it’s always hot and juicy. I’ve tried shawarma in many places, but nothing compares to this one. The service is great, and the atmosphere is cozy. Thank you for keeping the quality so high all these years!

Google
I found this place 2 months ago, and it’s my new go to. The food is so fresh and delicious. The potions are amazing. You really get your bang for your buck here. Highly recommend!

Yelp
All I can tell you (without writing a book) is this little restaurant is the real deal and is a gem, tucked away in the corner, and the food is SO fresh, and SO delicious, I am really regretting not getting some baklava! LOL! (But I'll be back!) This was my first experience at Mona's Kitchen but it certainly won't be my last. I'd give more than 5 stars if I could. All these flavors!! YAY! So YUMMY! Thank you for such a beautiful, delightful, experience... and an unbeatable "breakfast", too!!

Yelp
I just had a delicious lunch here with my friends. The food is absolutely amazing!!! Everything was cooked to perfection. The service was great! The music was authentic. I recommend this place highly.

Yelp
Shocked it was not busier. Food and service was excellent. Will be back again. Great hidden Gem in Tarzana

Yelp
do yourself a favor and check out mona's kitchen! ordered a chicken shawarma plate to go, planned on saving half but it was so good, i finished it in one sitting. the chicken was perfectly seasoned, fresh hummus, perfect garlic sauce and delicious rice! every bite is so satisfying yet leaves you wanting more. their baklava was amazing, fresh and tasty! george was very friendly and helpful, as well as the other gentleman cooking. not sure why this place isn't busier; it is a hole in the wall spot but it's sooooo delicious! one of the best restaurants i've been to in cali. from a walk-in, my order was ready in 5 minutes. i'll definitely order from here on a regular basis. ambiance: 4.8/5 food: 5/5 service: 5/5 mona's kitchen: 5/5

Yelp
Looking for a good Lebanese place in the valley and so far the best yet. I'm always looking for Kivbeh Nayeh and know it's fresh and delicious. Hidden Jem for middle eastern food, particularly Lebanese

Yelp
TLDR: Can't tell you much about Lebanese food, but I can tell you that Mona's Kitchen is not somewhere worth sleeping on. Give it a try ASAP, not just to support small businesses but to try the amazing tastes served here! - - - - - - Lebanese food... do I know what it is? Nope. Try it anyway? Heck yes! And being in a plaza with parking? Sign me up! I entered shyly and ordered and the Shish Tawook, not sure what to expect. First came a small dish of olive, pickles, and radish (?) appetizers - a mixture of salty and sour. I wasn't sure what to expect, but ate them - oh how I wish you could've seen the faces I made from all that sour. The Shush Tawook eventually came, and I have to admit it was better than I had expected. Between the thick rice grains, the tender chicken, or the pita and hummus / white garlic (?) mix, I really wasn't sure where to stop. My only dislike was how sour most of the food was. I can usually handle sour, but I think this was a bit more than I expected, almost as if many dishes were flavored by lemon. The staff working at the time (George?) seemed to be well known. Every customer knew him by name, and it wasn't busy when I visited. Breaking out of my shy boy moment, I asked if they frequented often since they knew George, and they mentioned how they come three times a week!

Yelp
Best falafel we have ever had! Also incredible lentil soup! We stopped for a quick meal to avoid the traffic on the 101. We ordered the appetizer trio and two cups of lentil soup. The tabbouleh was super fresh. Excellent grape leaves. Nothing was a disappointment. We will definitely detour here again!!

Yelp
Such a cozy ambiance with fantastic food. The hummus is out of this world thick and creamy with a nutty taste. The people here are very kind. I will bring my family next time. Also music is also a nice touch. I ordered shawarma plate, hummus meat, falafel to go. All very good.

Eric B.

Yelp
Third time here and this place remains as solid as ever. Food is so very good! Service is great. I absolutely recommend the mixed grill. Grilled chicken, beef kabob and steak skewers. Simply amazing!

Yelp
So tasty and fresh!!! Great serving sizes of Tabbouleh, Shish Kebab, Hummus, Shish Tawouk, Shawarma, Falafel, Rice with Vermicelli ... even Baklava and Knafeh is our favorite in the entire Valley. My family and I have eaten here half a dozen times and it's consistently very good. Also like the fried cauliflower and french fries. Restaurant is always quiet, but that kinda guarantees the server doesn't forget about you. Has outdoor patio with heater. Plaza parking lot or street.
google avatar

Paula V.

Yelp
Delicious Kibbeh Nayyeh. If you don't like raw meat, you can order Kibbeh, that comes deep fried and it is also delicious. You should have your meal with their Lebanese beer named Almaza. Their hummus with meat is awesome. The owner is the chef and he makes you feel home. They have indoor and outdoor seats.

Yelp
This is my second time eating here. It is a very chill place to eat. Not so busy. I had a gentleman that works here to prepare my food, the owner himself was not around. This gentlemen was nice and prepared my food very well. I ordered beef shawarma wrap and fries. I liked how the pita was thin and not the thick ones. Thank you for feeding me! The reason why I gave 4 stars was because the food was more like room temperature. Wish it was warmer.
google avatar

Saundra A.

Yelp
I found this restaurant on Yelp and ordered delivery I must say this is the BEST tabbouleh I have had in my life! It's really fresh and zesty!! I also ordered their knafeh and my husband from Jordan said it's truly delicious
google avatar

Lynne A.

Yelp
Stopped in here today as it was close to a couple appointments I had. First time here. Decided on the beef shawarma wrap and an iced tea. Wrap had plenty of meat in it and the side of pickles and turnips were yummy. Beef was tender, could of used more seasoning. Iced tea was bland. Cute spot with both indoor and outdoor dining.

Yelp
I've been eating here about twice per month since I moved to Tarzana. George is the best - everything is homemade, so fresh, and unbelievably flavorful. I'm really glad Mona's is so close to my home.

Yelp
Omg the food is so delicious!!! Even when I'm ordering just for myself , I still have to get the hummus , the Seabass Branzino fish , chicken shawarma , the salad that comes with everything is so fresh and crisp & oh that simple salad dressing that they make is divine .. I get extra pickles & it's not what you're thinking , it's not the American pickle! , so just get it and enjoy !!! The owner is adorable and so kind !!! Everyone there has beautiful energy ... I go sometimes twice a week !! It's that delicious... Sincerely; Tamala Jones

Yelp
Great old school location makes for a fabulous ambiance. Food was tasty, I'll be back to try more

Yelp
The fattoush was not an original type of recipe, they use balsamic vinegar with some type of tajin kick type dressing. Some what spicey, not as expected for the traditional favorite salad. In my opinion, this was a total miss. $9 also was such a waste. Now i ordered the steak kabob wrap. This was again my mistake because I knew the kabob would not be able to withstand big chunks in a pita wrap. I even asked them to cut the steak a little more so each bite would have more of the smaller steak pieces and of course, they didn't listen and my first bite was the kabob piece falling out of the wrap. A couple came in after me and we both got our wrap at the same time even when I called my food to go. wrap was panini'd grilled & hot but the other ingredients weren't good at all. Honestly, this is why I don't like to try anything new. They said they had been in business for five years and now I see why I have never come by. Good reviews because people have no clue what the dish is suppose to taste like. Maybe it's better for lunch plate when dining in, who knows.

Yelp
Atmosphere was ok, very plain and simple inside. The food was good. We were all disappointed that they added on an additional 18% "service charge" (basically a tip) and never told us they were doing that. We were only a party of 4 people, and almost left an additional tip, as we almost didn't notice that they had added that on to our check. They really should say something first. During the meal we asked what kind of wines they had and he pointed to a row of wine bottles (all the same) that were lined up along the back wall. "Red" he said. So we asked for a bottle. It tasted kind of sweet and nothing special (comparable to the $6-7 wines I have bought at Ralph's market). When the bill came, there was an $88.00 charge for the wine! That was upsetting. If you're not sure of prices or their extra fees, don't do what we did....ask/look ahead of time!!

Yelp
I have been going to Mona's kitchen for several years now. You can say I am a regular. I am there at least once a month if not more. The food is very delicious. Always fresh!
google avatar

Andrea E.

Yelp
Quite honestly addicted to Mona's Kitchen. I love their Muhammara - I have dreams about it. But, truly, everything I've had at Mona's has been delicious. I find myself ordering delivery from Mona's or dining in at least once a week. The best.

Lilly K.

Yelp
Cute place, amazing food and priced right! They have beer and wine. Definitely worth it.

IYISHA R.

Yelp
This place is DELICIOUS! Everything we ordered was amazing! Arayes, Babaghnooj, cheese rolls, hummus, shush tawook and the kafta kabob, batata harra, was all sooo good. I would highly recommend and we are definitely coming back!!!!

Yelp
Very tender beef. Would get again and come with a friend. Very good service too. The sauce is good too

Chloe W.

Yelp
Best falafel I have had in the US. Delicately crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. Absolute 10/10 (reasonable prices too!)
google avatar

Rhonda B.

Yelp
This is Lebanese food as it was meant to be - delicious!!! The best hummus/kebobs/kibbeh around.

George K.

Yelp
Absolutely the best kebob and shawarma I've ever had. If you live anywhere near this place consider yourself lucky. I'm very glad I found it and I'll be back..

Dana B.

Yelp
AMAZING beef shawarma! The owner was lovely too. Will make a point of coming here when I'm in the area. DELICIOUS

Yelp
Excellent little hole in the wall. The chicken liver sandwich is outstanding. Everything is fresh.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Pros -they make your order quick Cons -pricey for the quality that you get -fries don't taste as fresh as other places
google avatar

Siavash T.

Yelp
I ordered Shawerma for my fanily and my guest and, I tried to make conversion with George (owner) but he was disappointed me (I know some times thet are tired), beef was like dried-meat and pickels was old. Maybe I never try it again.
google avatar

Lior K.

Yelp
Such a great food! Always being done perfect from the salad to the meat and everything that comes with that. The owners are very generous and careful. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Ron K.

Yelp
The beef shawarma at Mona's kitchen was superb. Probably the best in LA and the closest to authentic Lebanese style shawarma. The meat had crisp but not overcooked and the tahini sauce was great. The wrap hd the proper ingredients for a successful explosion of flavors in your mouth. We want to come back and have a full feast with more than just Shawarma. The best of all is that George who is the owner I think was extremely nice and friendly and cane outside to ask me how the sandwich was and if I needed anything else. Highly recommend this place for Lebanese cuisine.
google avatar

Yelp
Very very delicious food, Lintel soup, appetizers hot and cold, fantastic main dishes Kabob and Shawerma. Great service and low price. Just fantastic place all around!!
google avatar

Yelp
Just moved in the area and was craving Lebanese food. My family and I ordered an order to go with a bunch of appetizers, sandwiches and a kofta plate and everything was just so mouth watering. Great flavor, clean food and the chef working during Christmas was so sweet. Will definitely be my spot from now on.
google avatar

Yelp
still SO MUCH to learn about Lebanese food...but what a GREAT PLACE TO TAKE A LESSON!! This little place cranks out some of the best food- different flavors, special recipes, fresh, fresh FRESH!! Seriously, if you're looking for special home-feel, great tasting food in a spotless restaurant, you just found it. They're doordash friendly too!

Yelp
After headlining the Daily News and the LA Times, we decided to try Mona's Kitchen. It's a new year, time to try new local food spots. We tried the beef and chicken kabobs. I loved the chicken! The fries were nice, hot and crispy. The rice was fluffy and buttery. The salad was fresh and tangy and the hummus just coaxed everything together. The service was great and the place is great for an intimate setting. This placed is tucked away in a little nook and cranny on Ventura Blvd. It's a great find if you are in the mood for delicious kabobs, it definitely hits the spot.

Michael C.

Yelp
Just ordered takeout last night from Mona's, we are repeat customers. My wife was born in Beirut, so she is very picky about her Lebanese cuisine. As always the chicken breast kebab was amazing, super tender, incredible spices and perfect char. Rice pilaf was perfect, super moist and buttery. Side of grape leaves was tender, perfectly cooked rice and a little bit spicy, so good. We think they make the best falafel in town, super crunchy outside, but light versus some places that make it really heavy and dense. My wife says it reminds her of her moms. Could not recommend the place more highly. If you live in Tarzana, or are passing through definitely check it out.
google avatar

Scott E.

Yelp
I'd pick zero if it was an option. Just sat down to eat take out from Mona's and it was inedible. No flavor, literally none, meat was tough, rice was terrible. Will never order or eat here again.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
Middle eastern comfort food that never disappoints. Home cooking vibe with consistently tasty spices. A local treasure.

Yelp
Mona's was a great find and I'm a picky eater. I saw my people's (Armenian) food in the area and came to what I thought was Sasoon Restaurant, but turned out it was replaced with Mona's. Lebanese, Armenian, same thing, so I decided to give it a go. It's rare that I find a place that serves delicious hummus and beef kabobs. Thank you for being one of very few on my list. The place had a few groups of customers dining in during lunch hour and it seemed to be run by an elder gentleman and a host/waitress. The gentleman greeted me and took my to-go order. Although the beef kabob was above average cost, it was also above average quality and taste. The kabob was marinated and cooked to perfection. The salad was dressed exactly how I like it. And the hummus was as good as it gets. My only comment to ownership is - please provide your take out customers more durable utensils. I absolutely despise getting cheap utensils that can't even stay steady by a grain of rice. I'm sure nobody enjoys having utensils like that.

Kam M.

Yelp
*********Beware - Do not go here ********** I left my credit card at this restaurant and drove home without it. Within hours of my meal-either the owner or the guy working there went to VONS and charged over $500, then to Bed Bath and Beyond and charged $1800.00. We stopped at Mona's Kitchen in Tarzana for some Lebanese food, there were other choices for lunch but it was my bad luck I chose this place. We were the only ones there... food was just OK. Now you know, it's your call as to whether you want to deal with dishonest and perhaps desperate people.

Yelp
Awesome and delicious food friendly staff and great customer service highly recommended this place they always have fresh ingredients and a clean welcoming environment
google avatar

Yelp
This unassuming little restaurant has an amazing variety of dishes including some genuinely unique ones like frog's legs! The hummus (the ultimate test of any middle eastern restaurant) is solid! While I have not tried enough menu items to give a 5-star review, I look forward to going back enough times to be able to rate the whole menu!
google avatar

Yelp
It was our first time at Mona's Kitchen and we are so coming back. Incredible quality and selection of food. Friendly service, affordable. 5 stars!

Yelp
This place has such great food! I came here with my friend SJ for my birthday and he ordered Hummus with Meat, Mouhammara, Kibbeh Nayyeh (drizzle olive oil on it, rub with garlic sauce and put a mint leaf on it and enjoy), Makanek, Arayes, Kibbeh Makliyeh (4 pcs), Cheese Rolls, Fattoush Salad (with chicken)!!! These thing were AMAZING! The service was great!! I would highly recommend this place to anyone that wants authentic Lebanese dishes!! Thank you for everything guys, keep up the great work!

Yelp
I can't believe I am saying this, but can this be the Hayat's Kitchen killer? Yes, yes it can. If you love Lebanese cuisine just go try this place out. Our family and friends are die hard Hayat's Kitchen customers/fans because quite frankly nothing in the valley comes close if you looking for authentic Lebanese cuisine and flavors. Well there is a new contender in this category now and might I even say, perhaps a new winner. I have not tried the usual meze spread we tend to order at Hayats with larger groups, but from what I tried at lunch, the food was equal or better than Hayats. On a side note the owner is a sweetheart and she clearly knows exactly what she is doing when it comes to Lebanese cuisine. Just go. Seriously. Get up and go right now. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! The food is excellent and on a different level--high quality, authentic Lebanese food. If you haven't been here, it's a must try.
