The Best Candy Shops in New York City | Eater NY

"Famously, Katharine Hepburn was a customer, and in her memoir wrote, “Lots of dark chocolate...came from a small shop on Upper Broadway called Mondel’s — turtles, almond bark, and breakup.” Mondel’s was founded in 1943 across the street from Columbia University, and the chocolates have that old-fashioned quality, which means no sea salt on the tops and a choice of light and dark for every sort of filled bonbon." - Robert Sietsema

Look forward to Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter for their special caramel filled Santas, hearts and bunnies - they're to die for!! The chocolate fudge is equally delicious. Love that this shop has been around for ages, truly a piece of history! A place you must go to on the UWS!!

Google
The best chocolates in the city. My grandparents used to take me here and it hasn’t changed. So rare to find a gem of a store like this. Makes me feel like a kid again

Google
I have been going to Mondel's since I got to NYC in 1992. The best chocolates in NYC by far! Not only that, the owners are so nice and pleasant and like to chat with the customers when there is time. I always feel so welcome whenever I visit the store. Thank You!!

Google
Mondel's is a staple of quality and luxury that has been bringing me back for 39 years, even now that I live in San Francisco. The delights of Jack's chocolates are not to be missed.

Google
They are dark chocolates are very good. The place is dingy and depressing, and the people are unfriendly and don’t like to answer questions.

Google
I've tasted chocolates from lots of cities, in Europe too, and this little shop is still my favorite. Just straight forward, delicious chocolates. The maple creams one of are my favorite. But everything is great, so just go and sample a couple things to help decide. It's family owned, and it shows in their product. I'm so glad they are still there!!

Yelp
I have been wanting to come here for so long but they are closed on certain days of the week, which I can never remember until I see the sign on their door. However, it was sooo worth the wait! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a kind lady who asked us if we needed help with selecting chocolate. We told her that we were thinking of purchasing some as a gift for our coworkers. She told us there were gift boxes ready to go and we decided to go with that and pick out a few more chocolate from the counter a la carte. The gift boxes were wrapped so nicely with wrapping paper and a ribbon, and were all already ready to go for us to grab and go. I would recommend getting one of the gift boxes if you want to give it as a gift because it was packaged so nicely and was already ready to go! The ambiance of the place is so cute! It is like chocolate heaven.

Yelp
Fabulous chocolates and treats, great variety, presents for young and old! You can't go wrong....

Yelp
I define a 5 star place by the fact that if you are in the area you have to go. That is exactly what Mondel is. If I am in the area I stop by because the chocolates are some of the best I have had. You can tell this place takes pride in what they do and I love it. The pecan clusters are legit and so are the assorted caramels. The almond bark always gets me too or I go with simple break-up chocolate. I like getting the box of chocolate with a whole bunch of stuff. Highly recommend. Check it out.

Yelp
A wonderful independent chocolate shop. Everything is delicious and the gifts are packaged beautifully and available for many major holidays. All the staff are very kind and while prices in chocolate shops are obviously higher than buying from a grocery store, there are some great deals if you're just looking to eat some chocolate (tip: the broken chocolate pretzel bags taste just as great but come with a great discount).

Patti R.

Yelp
Charming old school and absolutely delicious. Support local businesses! Worth a trip from outside the he neighborhood.

Yelp
Amazing chocolate, friendly staff, and a piece of old New York that can not be replaced.

Christopher L.

Yelp
Delicious chocolate that's worth every penny! I bought 1/2-pound of chunk chocolate to bring to my family in NJ. But I ate the whole bag while walking back to the subway because I couldn't stop. That night, I actually had a dream in which I was eating their chocolates. That definitely says something! It is a wonderful neighborhood place. Plus, the staff has a friendly yet professional air that is refreshing.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Charming little shop. Longtime staple of the community. Excellent chocolates. Pleasant and accommodating service.
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
Their chocolates are amazing. I tried a box of their mixed chocolates. 3 of us devoured it in minutes. Their dark chocolate was my favorite. I love the one with almonds in it. There was also a green filling one (pistachio?) woooooowww- really good. This is the place to go if you want to buy someone some nice chocolates or if you want to treat yourself!
google avatar

Colette H.

Yelp
Amazing chocolate fudge! I was walking by, stopped in, bought some fudge and they closed up right after I left. I'm so glad I made it there in time - the fudge was so rich and creamy. I need to go back for more!

Yelp
Mondel Chocolates is a historical stop. Manhattan storefronts are always going out of business. Where does a savvy shopper go, for delicious chocolate? Is this chocolate worth the long trip uptown to Morningside Heights? Chocolates are handmade! I used to go here after services at Riverside Church. You must try them.... you will not be sorry you did.

Yelp
A local favorite for my family conveniently located near my children's school. We stop by occasionally for our fix; and my daughters love picking out the chocolates. Expensive, but worth it. An old-fashioned store that keeps the neighborhood charm alive.
google avatar

Rodrigo D.

Yelp
Loved this place! We got the fudge and it was absolutely incredible. Great service and very nice people too. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We sure missed this place the past few months so we were so happy to see it open again. The vanilla and the maple cream truffles are really special. Also the chocolate mint squares (their riff on Andes Mints). There are endless flavors and fillings and the best part is that most come in milk and dark chocolate so there's something for everyone. Don't sleep on this one, folks!

Yelp
had a great walk up Broadway to buy chocolates for gifts. They have me one to taste. It was divine. I will go back and back. charming--the real thing.
google avatar

Arlene F.

Yelp
Discovered this place during a casual walk down Broadway. The vintage storefront is what caught my eye and love supporting old businesses. As soon as you walk in, I was taken back to my childhood with my grandma when we would pick chocolates together. You have the option to customize a box of hand picked chocolates which would make a great gift for someone. My favorite are the chocolate covered nut clusters.

Kay K.

Yelp
Old school chocolateria! Tons of histories & memories and only New York.

George U.

Yelp
The best chocolates in the world! Amazing quality, and never ever ever disappoint! My favorite is the Almond Bark, and the coconut chocolate. Local mom and pop, small business store. Do not hesitate, you will fall in love!
google avatar

Adrianna G.

Yelp
It's not great chocolate but it's a really cute little shop. It's of course famous for being there forever and being the favorite of Katherine Hepburn. I brought some home to California for family in a gift box. Their gift box has an old fashioned "Mondel's Chocolate's" sticker on it, which was a nice touch.
google avatar

O K.

Yelp
Mondel Chocolates is a great place for a stubborn male coworker to buy chocolates to give another coworker in place of an apology. The Mondel-chocolates-as-apology work really well when the boxed selection includes the pistachio-filled, almond paste-filled and dark chocolates. Chocolates from Mondels speak louder than any words said stubborn coworker could come up with to express that he was wrong and was too proud to come up with the right words. : )

Joy R.

Yelp
I love this place! Including how old fashioned it is (smile). The chocolates are out of this world. It's a little dangerous, ha ha!
google avatar

Yelp
Professional over the phone. When I arrive to pick up my order, the lady was stuck up and placed my bag of assorted chocolates on some box near the front door for me to pick up instead of handing the bag to me. She had gloves on so she was going to be alright. I didn't miss a beat and placed the payment on that same box. She bent her a** down and picked that money up. Lady please, you hand me my items. Period. I didn't have to spend my money at your Godiva wanna be shop. To her credit, my babe said the chocolates tasted good. Better had..
google avatar

Rich K.

Yelp
Butter crunch. Espresso truffles. Dark chocolate truffles. Milk chocolate truffles. Several of each. A warm smile and a friendly greeting from the gentleman behind the counter, who remembers me each time I come in. Can I ask for anything more? I don't think so, this is perfection.

Yelp
I grew up in Morningside Heights, and this shop truly has a special place in my heart. So many fond memories of my mom taking me for an after school treat of raspberry truffles! But all nostalgia aside (though the store's old school-ness is definitely one of its big attributes!), it really is a quality place. They have a variety of chocolates and candy available, and while I'm partial to the raspberry truffles and fruit-shaped marzipan, I've never had anything from there that I didn't like. The sweets make for great stocking stuffers on Christmas, and I've bought many an assorted gift box from them for birthdays, Mother's Day, and hostess gifts. Plus, the owners have never been anything but kind, courteous, and efficient. With so much of Broadway turning into chains, bank branches, or otherwise empty storefronts, I'm so glad this little gem has managed to stay put all these years.

Yelp
Can't believe I've managed to live in the neighborhood for two years without visiting this place! It's a tiny lil place packed with all sorts of chocolates. We just picked out a variety and every single one was amazing. I especially loved that most truffles come in milk or dark chocolate. This place is a MUST if you love chocolates!

Don'tGoogleMe P.

Yelp
A quiant store, nice people, cute animal stuffed dolls, great feel, quality chocolate. I go there often and I am glad to have them in the community.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
Received a lovely gift box for Easter. An absolutely delicious selection of treats. Looking forward to visiting this UWS fixture. If it was good enough for Katherine Hepburn, it's good enough for me.
google avatar

Y N.

Yelp
Best chocolates! Don't be fooled by others that have fancy names and boxes.
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Mondel Chocolates: Please stop having a sale on your vanilla-chocolate swirl fudge. I am going to have coronary failure.

Yelp
Mondel Chocolates is the only store that has remains from my youth...decades ago! the moment I walk in the smells transport me back to being a little girl holding my papa's hand and nose pressed against the glass picking out my delicious delights by far my favorite chocolatier in NYC!

Stella K.

Yelp
My family has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 25 years, and we probably stop in once a week or so. The chocolates are not fancy and "artisanal", but they are delicious and come in many varieties. I'm fond of the pecan turtles, buttercrunch, and marzipan (the kind shaped like different fruits). My now-adult kids love the shop and consider themselves lucky for having grown up just around the corner! They have a wide selection of gift boxes with assorted chocolates, and they have some already wrapped, which is very convenient. I've lost track of how many of these I've bought for hostess gifts, and they are always well-received. In an era of big box and chain stores, a small, family owned operation like this is a throwback to another era, and Mondel's has a special atmosphere when you enter the shop. It makes me happy just to be in there, and I hope it never leaves.

Michelle P.

Yelp
Delicious chocolates! Great service, staff and the store is a little slice of heaven on earth.

R R.

Yelp
Marvelous. Original. Divine. There are no finer confections than the Pecan Turtles. The Butter Crunch. The Truffles. The -- oh, Christ, I can just go on and on! As I placed the order over the phone, the chocolatier, a pleasant and obliging lady, was as sweet as the chocolate. Don't waste your time with the average, money-mad brands. Always go back to the wonders of originality, and the sparks of Mondel.
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Nothing smells better than a chocolate shop. Mondel offers a wide assortment of hand dipped chocolates. While they aren't what you would call "high end," they are delicious. I am especially fond of the chocolate covered ginger and orange.

Julia D.

Yelp
omfg so delicious!! top notch chocolates i got several gifts there! fun fact they are dangerously delicious because even when im there to buy a gift i'm still unable to resist buying something for myself! soo good
google avatar

Saira K.

Yelp
This is a cute little place filled with memories of Columbia. I recommend the milk chocolate truffles and creams.
google avatar

Sean W.

Yelp
An excellent source of some of the finest chocolates in the city. A favorite of Katherine Hepburn who once noted "dark chocolate (the best in the world) came from a small shop on upper Broadway called Mondel's - turtles, almonds, bark, and breakup..."

Joseph D.

Yelp
Old-school in all the best ways. Delicious chocolates and candies. The personal touch of the owners makes the store inviting and delightful. Being inside Mondel just makes you feel good. Eating what you purchase makes you feel even better.
google avatar

Itir S.

Yelp
This is the most amazing little store. It gets lost among all the other stores on the street so you have to look carefully to find it. I can't believe I've walked by it so many times without going in. They don't just sell chocolates, they have all kinds of candy too.
google avatar

Sacha I.

Yelp
Crap. There's a history of coronary heart disease in my family. And Mondel Chocolates makes the best buttercrunch I have ever had.
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
The ears of the yellow bunny I got in my basket for Easter 1986 still smell like Mondel's.

Ryder E.

Yelp
First went to Mondel's in the mid-60s when each day after school my father would buy me a treat. The store was full of stuffed animals, dark and magical. The wonderful owner and her daughter were so kind. I left the neighborhood in the mid 1980s, and I returned nostalgically after not having been to Mondel's for 15 years or so - the owner recognized me and asked after my father. This is a wonderful store with wonderful products. It is really one of those special places for me! The maple fudge is out of this world! Almond turtles are excellent too!
google avatar

Kate T.

Yelp
This is not a Kees or Cluizel, but it's great if you're looking for traditional truffles, creams, and other standard chocolates. It's still legit, though; my favorite - the raspberry cream - has actual raspberry puree in the filling. Most of their offerings come in your choice of dark or milk, and a quarter pound will cost you about $7.50.
google avatar

George C.

Yelp
Somehow I've yet to review Mondel, really the only Chocolatier in the area, likely how and why it's been around since 1943. Greeted by a nice lady, I realized immediately the undeniably-old-fashioned feel. Consequent $15 min for Amex (only, I believe), a sign posted on their old register along with some decades-old clippings and other knick-knacks. The only thing that seems to have changed since the '40s is the sign out front and the chocolates (hopefully). Mondel boasts fairly old-fashioned pricing, too, as I got 6 items for less than $5.50, an unexpected delight but perhaps a foreboding sign as well. The PB Fudge, various truffles, chocolate marzipan, and chocolate ginger treats were all delicious.

Fig Wasp R.

Yelp
Indeed, as good as it gets. A rare gem in a wasteland of banks and chain pharmacies.

Lily P.

Yelp
When I decided to go to college in Morningside Heights, little did I know how lucky I was. A little chocolate shop on Broadway turned out to be like church for me. I go weekly. I feel like I have lost my way in life if I stay away for too long. I wake up with the phantom taste of Mondel chocolates in my mouth, like a calling from Jesus himself telling me where I need to go, where I need to be, and more importantly, who I am. I hope one day I can bring as much happiness to another human being as Mondel has brought to me. Every time I take a bite of a raspberry jelly, I die a little inside, and then am reborn stronger than I was before. The amaretto truffles, I am sure, nourish my organs like chocolate fertilizer. Is Mondel Chocolates the primary reason I decided to stay in NYC over the summer? I would be lying if I said no. I haven't tried it out yet, but I suspect that eating a daily dose of Mondel chocolates while pregnant would produce a super-baby. Fare thee well, sweet reader, and I hope to see you in Mondel's soon.

Renee S.

Yelp
Delicious traditional chocolates at great prices. You can pick and choose what you want, or buy a prefilled package. Everything I've tried has been wonderful- raspberry filled were particularly good. Perfect for a gift or a treat for yourself. What a wonderful local business to support!

E E.

Yelp
I love this store. It is a gem in the neighborhood. I get the milk chocolate turtles for my dad on every gift giving occasion and he never shares! They are so good. Everything in there is mouth watering delicious....and we've sampled a lot of it over the years!

Barbara M.

Yelp
Delicious chocolate indeed! A wonderful shop! And please -- let's all spell Miss Hepburn's name correctly: Katharine, with an "a."
