Moody Tongue Sushi

"Push open a heavy, carved black-painted wood door to this space brimming with old world charm and modern touches. Moody Tongue Sushi is from the folks behind Moody Tongue Brewing in Chicago, albeit with Hiromi Iwakiri's sushi taking center stage. There is an à la carte menu, but the way to go is their nigiri sets creatively paired with beer. Some of the standouts include ora king salmon paired with the Sour Watermelon Saison and madai with orange zest matched with Orange Blossom Blonde. Oak Barrel Aged Flanders Red Ale is paired with sweet jumbo shrimp topped with Hokkaido uni and a dot of caviar for an impressive duo. There are full cocktail and wine lists, but with great beers on tap, why bother? The Shaved Black Truffle Rice Lager is an exclusive, and well worth the price tag." - Michelin Inspector

Okay food..sloppy service and noisy ambiance. We reserved for 8 pm..arrived on time..got seated 8.30 and the first drink landed on the table at 9 pm. Food was good but not great. We didn’t like the service at all. The receptionist was not welcoming and the waiter , despite being friendly, couldn’t explain the dishes.

My friend and I stopped by for happy hour right before dinner. I was eager to check it out because of their unique beer selection. Based on the menu, I think the sushi is a bit overpriced, but happy hour is always a good deal. I tried the Juiced Lychee IPA, which was really good—you can definitely taste the lychee in the aftertaste. My friend had the Raspberry Rose, but it was too tart for me. I also had the Sour Watermelon Saison, which was supposed to taste like a watermelon Jolly Rancher, but it didn’t. However, the pickled watermelon rind flavor stood out. Of course, we had to try the caviar bump for $15, served on a wooden spoon. We also ordered two happy hour hand rolls, the spicy scallop and spicy tuna, priced at $12 each. They were fresh and pretty good. Overall, I’d come back just for the happy hour.

Very inventive beer selection without compromising integrity. A lot of the beers have a fruit in their title or making which usually causes me to steer clear, but none I tried were gimickally fruity. The cherry lambic and lychee IPA were as exquisite and Je ne sais quoi as a fine glass of natural wine. Even the simple Pilsner was one of the best I’ve had. Not to mention the splendid array of beer-specific glassware! And to top it off you get to pair all of that with top notch sushi. The rolls are deliciously and delicately designed and the new flavors just compete with the wonderful texture of everything. I also enjoyed the surprising cucumber salad (not what you think) with chili crisp, the warm mushroom salad, the hamachi crudo, the tuna roll (best I’ve had), salmon roll, and scallop corn roll. Will be back to try the nigiri, but from afar it looked wonderfully presented. I got the berry Sunday for desert and after that I was a very happy camper. Bartender Juan was great and took his time to introduce me to the beer selection. His recommendations were excellent. Beautiful ambiance and calm even on a Friday night. Can’t wait to return to try everything I didn’t get to.

My second time here, this time for my birthday! They brought out complimentary beer (I’m not a huge beer fan at all but this was quite good!). Cucumber roll appetizer and radish salad were winners once again. I personally love the vegan tasting menu. Fresh ingredients, perfect bites. We split the enormous 12 layer carrot cake for dessert and brought most of it home. The cake was spectacular. Service was great. Bathroom is clean and toilet is hella fancy! Looking forward to coming back again soon.

Google
The vegan tasting menu was such a joke that I feel scammed. As an offshoot of a two Michelin star restaurant, I had high hopes for the vegan tasting menu. Imagine my dismay when the majority of the courses were just overly acidic rice topped with roasted vegetables. There was zero creativity and thought behind the menu, and frankly the execution was mediocre at best and borderline inedible at worst. The whole experience felt unrefined and not at all worth the $175 price tag. For those that have tried Omakaseed or Jungsik, you know that vegan tasting menus are ripe for experimentation and creativity. I guess all I can say is steer clear and save your money, beyond sushi is better.

I tried two different martinis and both were excellent. I highly recommend the salmon avocado roll, it's one of the best I've ever had.

Google
We tried the omakase here and it was mediocre at best. The rice was not fresh and tasted hard (like it was out for a while). I did like the actual sashimi so that was one saving grace. It's worth mentioning that the staff were stellar and warm. The cocktails are very delicious and unique but the star of the show, needs work. Oh and negi (葱), that's onions.

Google
Wanted a city night out me and my best friend decided to try this place out! The staff was accommodating and got us seats at the bar within the 15 minutes we called coming from New Jersey. The espresso martinis were amazing and they have them with oat milk for the razzle dazzle! The food was fresh and filling! Thanks to tik tok for introducing this place especially on a night out with my best friend!!

Yelp
After randomly stumbling upon this place we made a reservation for 8:45 last night. We did our anniversary dinner here and I think it's the perfect date night spot. We were stuck in a lot of traffic and ended up being about 20 minutes late but it wasn't a big deal at all they still seated us immediately. The service overall was great and so friendly. We were Sat in the back area but if you can I would recommend sitting at the sushi bar it seemed like it would enhance the experience. We started off with a lychee and jalapeño martini, both were great. We got the spicy hand roll set and the west village hand roll set. I added the negi toro as well which is a must. Honestly we LOVED everything except I think you can skip the salmon avocado. It was a little too innovative for me and I prefer just the fresh fish and seaweed. We also added on the wagyu hand roll at the end and the sushi chef was so kind and gave it to us on him. All the food was great and everything working there was also amazing. I would throughly recommend especially as I think this place will soon be hard to snag a resy. I'll be back!

Yelp
Moody Tongue recently opened its hand roll bar section of the restaurant, and my boyfriend and I were eager to try it and the martinis out. I did overall enjoy the hand rolls, and the service at the establishment was absolutely phenomenal. It's a great place for a swanky date night, too. What ultimately prevented a 5-star rating was the inconsistent flavor and quality. First off--the servers and chef at the hand roll bar were incredible. The service was attentive and caring, and the chef carefully explained every fish and roll to us. He also came over at the end to chat a little bit and even gave us a little Japanese sweet to end the night. If you have something to celebrate, the servers will make sure you feel seen and special. The fish was all fresh and tasty. My boyfriend and I both decided to go with the West Village roll combo and we each added on one more roll. We also ordered martinis to complement our meal. The spicy tuna roll was the standout of the night. If I just had three of those rolls, I would have left extremely happy. The orange madai rolls were also delicious, and I liked the salmon avocado though my boyfriend enjoyed it a little less. I enjoyed my tomato ricotta roll a lot (though it was pricey for what it was) and the negi toro roll wasn't the best I had but was still yummy. The lychee martini and negi oil Gibson martini were both great pairings to our sushi. Neither of us were a fan of the fluke or hamachi ponzu rolls. I thought the ume honey on the fluke had an odd aftertaste, and that the hamachi ponzu roll was a bit too wet with both thick slices of daikon and also cucumber. The seaweed was also a bit too thick on all of the handrolls, generally, making it hard to bite through sometimes. I enjoyed my tomato martini at first, but sadly the more I drank it the more of a weird sour aftertaste I had in my mouth. The server, however, was super kind and was able to get me something new. It's completely possible though that my palate just wasn't aligned with some of the more daring concepts of the menu, like the tomato martini or the hamachi ponzu. Overall, I think this is a fun new concept that I would recommend for a slightly more affordable version of Moody Tongue.

Yelp
Made a reservation for a friend and I on Wednesday evening since we had a sushi craving. this place had a cute vibe and the servers were so kind which is always amazing we knew we wanted the sashimi sampler, an app, and dessert. the sashimi sampler is such a great price. favorites were fatty tuna and the salmon - but all the fish were seriously so delicious. the salmon crudo was zesty and so good! def a nice little fish starter and last we did a panna cotta - this dessert was shockingly great. the matcha was made very well and was a good portion size - the little boba pieces were not a needed touch however def recommend!!!!

Yelp
Came to Moody Tongue on a Saturday night and had such a great dinner! We started with the spicy tuna and torched summer scallop maki's, and the fluke crudo. All were great but the spicy tuna was something special! For mains we both ordered our own specialty nigiri selection. While the fish was great, some of the pieces felt like they should have been on the traditional selection as they didn't offer up much flavor. My favorite was the tuna with a garlic confit! For dessert, they were out of the berry soft serve, so we ordered the s'more cookie and carrot cake. The carrot cake slice was huge and I would absolutely order that again! The s'more cookie, while tasty, could have been elevated by being warmed up. For beer, I ordered the pear saison and the berry cobbler cassis. The beer selection here was amazing and I can't wait to go back and try more!! My friend who went with me doesn't even like beer and she loved both of the ones I ordered. Service was also great! We never felt rushed even though we were there for over two hours through apps, mains, and dessert! Also, you must use their bathroom - the Toto toilet is such a luxurious touch!

Yelp
Fabulous experience. Can't say enough about it. Food and drink almost perfect. Couple of small nits (hamachi roll with bell pepper was a bit heavy, salad had a bit too much dressing) but small nits to pick in the grand scheme of what a great experience the rest of it was.

Yelp
We were really looking forward to eating here and left quite disappointed. We've been trying all the different omakase places in the city which have been fantastic and this one was did not compare at all. Got the Brewmaster's tasting menu which includes the beer pairing. Did not live up to the hype. Wish we spent our money elsewhere.

Yelp
We came here on a Friday night, made reservation for 2 at 5:30pm and it was very empty when we arrived. Service was top notch. Interior is simple and elegant. We got Tokyo Tomato and Toasted Rice lager for drinks, and each got the 10 piece nigiri for main, one traditional and one specialty. Tokyo Tomato had a very slight hint of tomato, I'd think for a drink with "tomato" in the name, the tomato flavor should've been a bit more abundant. Toasted rice lager was definitely different, I could taste the toasted rice in after taste. Now when it comes to nigiri, maybe I'm too out of touch as to how pricey omakase is now in the city, but for $115 (and $75 for traditional) and 10 pieces of nigiri, both my husband and I were still hungry. We could've stayed and ordered more from the menu, but we decided to switch to a different restaurant. With one drink and one nigiri selection each, including tax and tip, our total bill came to close $300. This is where the rating is hard. Food was delicious, not super unique among all the other omakase places in the city we've been to previously, but I would've given it a solid 4 had it not been for the price. I understand this is supposed to be a restaurant from an established chef with Michelin stars in Chicago, but the price tag seemed a liiiiittle outrageous given how hungry we still were. Or maybe I'm just getting priced out by the omakase market in the city, who knows.

Yelp
Terrible - didn't honor our paid reservation and refused to help us rebook. Avoid if you have any decency

Yelp
My friend and I had a great dinner at the hand roll bar side of moody tongue. We love martinis and they did not disappoint! The tomato martini was especially interesting and savory. Hand rolls were delicious as well. I only wish this place was bigger so I could stop in for a martini and hand roll more often.

Yelp
A very fun and unique spot! I've never seen a sushi/beer pairing, and the beer was excellent! The sushi was good, but some of the flavors overpowered the fish and for that reason, I might choose a different spot in the future. The bar was lovely though!

Yelp
I had dinner at Moody Tongue Sushi with my daughter and a few cousins, about a year and a half after enjoying a terrific dinner at Moody Tongue in Chicago with one of those cousins. While Moody Tongue in Chicago has two Michelin stars and Moody Tongue Sushi just opened last spring, my cousin and I both agree that we prefer Moody Tongue Sushi's sushi tasting menu in New York City. Sorry, Chicago. The restaurant space itself is simple, clean and rustic, but small, especially compared to the expansive space of the Chicago restaurant, which also houses the brewery. The service was terrific. We learned that the general manager wasn't present, but the assistant general manager is amazing. When we asked whether a copy of the tasting menu were available, she told us that it was not, but then hand wrote it for us while consulting with the chef. Thank you! A very nice thing about Moody Tongue Sushi's tasting menu is that the entire table doesn't have to order it. My daughter was stuffed from four days of gorging in Manhattan, and one of my cousins is battling cancer and avoids raw fish, so, for them, being able to opt out of the tasting menu was ideal. However, my Chicago-dining cousin and I went for it, with the beer pairings, too, of course. Interestingly, the beers are all brewed in and shipped from Chicago. They would truly serve as courses on their own, each having different appearances, tastes and textures. The whole concept of pairing different beers with different courses of food in a tasting menu format is absolutely delicious and absolutely genius. The food was largely nigiri sushi and the fish was all excellent. The only course that wasn't ideal was the dish with two gunkan. At least one had too much Kewpie mayo in it that overwhelmed the fish. Fortunately, I love Kewpie mayo, but sea scallop and king crab taste better with less than more. Another very nice thing about Moody Tongue Sushi is that it saves seats for walk-ins. I guess that's a New York City good neighbor kind of thing to do. I see Michelin stars in Moody Tongue Sushi's future and look forward to dropping in for another meal the next time that I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Run! This place is amazing. Food, service, drinks, and ambiance are all top notch. This was my first time trying sushi and let me tell you, the bar has been set high. Because I had nothing to compare it to, you'll have to take my husbands word for it that it's the best sushi he has ever had in NYC. The beer pairings are really unique, you should certainly make sure that's part of your order. You will of course need to order a bit more than that to leave satisfied. Other items to order: Spicy Tuna rolls, Tomato Ricotta roll, torched, and the nigiri. Items to skip: Cucumber Salad and the California. So yes, this is an expensive meal. I would not recommend if you're looking for something budget friendly. But I would highly recommend if you're trying to impress someone or just want incredible food and don't mind the cost.

Hunter M.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but honestly one of the worst rolls I ever had. I stopped by thinking I wanted to order to go and will have a drink while waiting. I was tired and didn't feel like dining. After sitting down and ordering, I was told take out was not available at all. So I ordered just a little since I was also super hungry. I ordered mushroom salad which was a bit salty but love mushroom so I was happy to see on the menu. Hamachi roll with peppers on top... rice was so mushy and disgusting I could not eat it. All I tasted was bad sushi rice with peppers on top. I will not return.
google avatar

Cassidy H.

Yelp
Everything was so delicious. Cucumber salad was a great starter. Handrolls were richy and creamy. Every piece of the omakase was perfectly soft, chewy, and fresh. We loved this place and will definitely be back for the specialty omakase tasting and beer pairing. Our waitress was super nice and the ambiance was perfect.

Yelp
SUCH a fun night! The staff were super friendly and kind! My friend and I both got the omakase with the beer pairings. Beer pairings! How long have I waited for that, beer affecioando that I am? Everyone else does wine or sake, but these guys have an in-house brewery with beers made especially. Fab! We sat outside on a beautiful evening and enjoyed the food, the service, the people watching... it was all great! Definite recommend!

Yelp
One of the top ten sushi restaurants in NYC as honored by "Modern Luxury" magazine, Moody Tongue stands out deserving top honors. Let's started with the 15 course examples of the freshest fish flown in each morning from Japan. Each course match perfectly to enhance each succulent mouthful with expertly matched beer by their Master Brewer. The beer is as flavorful as the Uber fresh fish or why not choose the highest rated Japanese beef where each animal gets a massage daily. Their bar options are second to none I've savored in NYCs bars. Plus wines can be savored if beer isn't your preference. Attentive knowledgeable servers guided by the expertise of Josh, mister nice guy for sure. We enjoyed this top line restaurant for 2 hours and never felt anything but happy. Treat yourself - it's worth it.

Yelp
We had plans to go to another Omakase place nearby and my friend happened to find this one by chance. We made a reservation for 5 people for 4:30 PM (as soon as they open) on a Saturday the day before. We were seated immediately and even though our reservation had somehow come into the system as 4 people, they were able to accommodate the extra person. Pairing beer and sushi is not something we'd ever imagined so of course we did the tasting menu. Our waiter really knew how to explain all of the craft beers and we were actually amazed at how well they all paired with the sushi. The fish was fresh and each roll was so tasty. I especially love sushi that is so fresh and delicious that you don't need any soy sauce or additions besides the nigiri itself. This is not a tasting menu/omakase experience where you'll be leaving still hungry like some others. There was a point when we all needed to take a breather and asked them to slow down the courses, which they gladly did. Will definitely be recommending this experience to everyone!

Yelp
Unique experience, sushi with beer pairings. I preferred sitting at the bar. Omakase was great. Staff were very knowledgeable.

Yelp
Need a top notch tasting experience in the West Village? You found it! Service was tailored to your every need, and special requests were easily granted. My Wife and I enjoyed the 15 course with Beer Tasting. Every dish was superb and super fresh. Our host Bix was phenomenal, and made our night one to remember!
google avatar

Yelp
Extra star for great service, but I can't recommend. Probably the worst quality sushi in Manhattan that you can get at this price point. Pacing was also pretty slow. I did love the beer pairings, but you're mainly paying for sushi and it isn't up to par here. Fish is fresh but not flavorful and I think they use normal rice instead of sushi rice which is really noticeable

Yelp
For a restaurant that just opened in February 2023, I was blown away by how every staff member brought their A game. My partner and I left feeling like a king and a queen after enjoying such a A FUN & FLAVORFUL evening. Welcome to the West Village!

Yelp
Alexis was offered great recommendations. The hand rolled avocado and salmon toll was delicious as was the peach cobbler cocktail. Dimly lit rooms were perfect for a relaxed Friday evening experience. I will come here again.

Yelp
The staff was first class The sushi was delicious The space is unique and intimate I'm not a beer guy but their beers are excellent and pairs beautifully with the sushi. I've been three times and will be back

Yelp
Moody Tongue was absolutely phenomenal. Our server was awesome. She was very well informed and helped us through the menu. I'd recommend doing the tasting menus. The sushi on the tasting menu was outstanding and the beer pairing was well worth it. I enjoyed the rolls, but the nigiri was much better. Overall moody tongue is a great addition to the west village with excellent sushi, beer, and service. Can't wait to come back

Yelp
I never knew beer and sushi could be such a great pairing. Maybe it's because I never gave beer a chance. I grew up in the land of PBR's and Bud Lights. Where the only option was usually the cheapest option. Where I could be persuaded by a color changing can whenever a beer was cold. I have been enlightened. I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I've only drank Coors Light since college, like a frat boy that's trying to hold on to the last remnants of the best years of his life. I've had craft beers. I've had my share of hazy's, saisons and tripels. But I've never had a Moody Tongue. No pun intended but I guess I never had a moody tongue. I never really went out of my way to discern how different flavor profiles could impact my palate when it came to beer. Moody Tongue Sushi was different. It took the simplicity and meticulousness of nigiri sushi and paired it with the same level of detail a brewmaster would put into a brew. It gave me a new lens to look at beer and redefined how I should think of sushi pairings. Look, nothing is going to upend hundreds of years of tradition in pairing sushi with saki but maybe - just maybe - the guys at Moody Tongue know what they are doing and can offer you an new outlook on alternatives. In the end, what's really the difference between a sake with a heavy rice profile and Moody Tongue's Perigord black truffle rice lager? Only how well you can wash down that piece of tuna. And there's no definitive answer as to which way is better but I would rather do it with a truffle bomb out of a champagne flute than out of the generic sake cup.

Yelp
I want to be nice because the staff was so sweet and helpful but my allegiance is to the potential diner. The food was ok- nothing was "bad" but what I had was just "ok". This is not "good sushi", it is decent food. Sushi I have had at $95 fifteen course one hour sushi bars is tastier and more varied. My daughter enjoyed the vegan omakase but says she had better for half the price elsewhere . The rice had so much vinegar that I couldn't taste the crab in one of my rolls. The other roll had scallop but again the other ingredients so overpowered it that the scallop which accounts for most of the cost of the roll was untastible. The cost was not justified by what we had IMO. Vegan Omakase with beer pairing, forgetable gyoza and two rolls, one bottle of sparkiling water and an individual (delicious) beer came to $350 all in. At half that it would have been slightly expensive but this cost is totally out of proportion to the quality of the food. I think this company makes wonderfull beer and should offer it with a different menu of food. Burgers would be great or if they want to stick with sushi there needs to be a MAJOR upgrade in sushi quality and execution . As I've said the staff was friendly and professional but the menus they gave us were "outdated" and most of the actual offerings differed from the menu. They did not explain this until I started to order things on the menu only to be told they were unavailable or were now offered in a significantly altered form. This is bizzare and shoddy. Why not get a chalkboard and display the ACTUAL menus offerings so diners can peruse it and think their choices through instead of being thrown off balance and rethinking while taking in verbal descriptions of replacements and differences from the written menu ( which is there WHY?!) ? Oh, yes I was asked about allergies and related that I have a dairy allergy yet I was offered on three occasions (a total of 5 items) that were very obviously milk based. Sure they apologized each time I pointed it out but as we were the only two people in the resturant one would have hoped this was not too much to keep in mind. Come to think of it strike the proffessional comment.

Yelp
The best sushi!!! High quality sushi with a great vibe. The cocktails and sushi-beer pairings are on point. The nigiri pieces melt in your mouth. Waitstaff are all incredibly friendly. They tell you where each fish is sourced and help curate your meal. Do not skip the dessert!! The Strawberry Shortcake was incredible. 10/10 definitely going to be a regular here.

Yelp
The Brewmaster's Tasting Menu was incredible. The beer and sushi on their own are excellent, but the combinations were unreal. I didn't know beer could be this good, and was surprised by the pairings with every bite. Most of the sushi served won't be on the a la carte menu, but can be ordered in their system if you know what to ask for. I'm not going to ruin the surprise (I also won't do it justice even if I tried). So many of the pieces made me question why other places don't offer the same, because they were just that good. With the Tasting Menu, it's not a taste of the beer - you receive full vessels which will fill you up. There's no point of ordering water on the side, you will be fully satiated unlike many omakase/sushi places. They start with the Toasted Rice Lager to whet your appetite, and then you're able to taste their entire reserve selection sans the shaved black truffle rice lager. Their Hojicha Panna Cotta was perfect, and not too sweet. The service was great, but is entirely eclipsed by the menu. Will be returning.

Yelp
My friends and I were excited to try Moody Tongue, as the beer/sushi seemed like a unique dining experience. We snagged a reservation for a Friday and were seated upon arrival. After reviewing the menu and getting a rundown from our waitress, my friend and I decided to do the Wabash tasting (3 pieces of sushi and 3 beers) and added a Spicy Tuna roll. My other friend didn't do a tasting, so instead ordered a few rolls and pieces of sushi. The sushi items were good. Not the best sushi I've ever had, but the items were fresh. The pairing was also interesting. I can't say I really appreciated the flavors I was supposed to be getting out of each combination, but it was a unique experience nonetheless. One thing I will say is if you're doing the tasting, you may want to order a drink beforehand. Our waitress didn't recommend ordering a beer/cocktail beforehand, so we sat without a drink until dinner arrived. Ambiance is lively. We were seated in the bar area at a high top table. Not an ideal spot, but we were still able to have a nice conversation. Service was good too. Our waitress was friendly and helped us go over the menu. Like I mentioned above, a little more detail around what to expect would have been great, but otherwise she was attentive. My reason for the lower rating is due to the price versus what you get. As someone who lives and eats out in NYC, I'm used to paying more for food. We paid over $100 each for 3 pieces of sushi, a shared roll, and the beer flight (which is about 1 beer). At the end we were still pretty hungry, but realized we'd have to order a lot more to feel full and the prices were so high for everything, we may as well have added another $100. We ended up ordering Pizza after we left. Overall, it's a nice place with good food and service. I would recommend coming to sit at the bar for a drink and light bite. If you're hungry and hoping to leave feeling full, this is not the spot.

Yelp
This is hands down, my favorite restaurant in New York. Life has simply been much better since discovering it. The sushi is some of the best quality fish that I've ever had. The ginger salmon and tuna hand roll is my go-to order. The atmosphere is always a vibe (great date spot). The presentation is always fantastic. And the staff makes every meal feel like home. Daniela goes out of her way to make sure I have an amazing meal every time and the rest of the staff is always so nice and accommodating. Shout out to Max, Anna and the entire staff. If you like great sushi, good drinks and amazing service look no further this is your spot.

Yelp
I was taking my co-workers out for dinner, and a few of us have very specific dietary requirements (celiac, dairy free, nuts, etc.) so I'm definitely looking for a place that's able to accommodate our needs. We often rely pretty heavily on our server to guide us through the menu, and to indicate (when they serve us) what each person can and can't eat. I want to start by saying the space itself is very sleek, and I'm a big fan of the design aesthetic. We ordered so much food, it's hard to point out anything specific. But, I will say that everything we ate was really really really tasty. My only gripe is that their hand rolls are...gigantic. While typical hand rolls are (at most) a bite or two, these were equivalent to an entire roll of nigiri (aka too much). We ordered a ton, thinking they were small bites and ended up becoming exceptionally full. They've only been open for 4 months, so I'm sure they are still perfecting their service. If you've got a large group, and you happen to love beer (I am, unfortunately, allergic), this is the spot for you. Just know that you probably don't need as many hand rolls as you think you do, lol.

Yelp
Wonderful experience here. This is the second location of the moody tongue sushi located in chicago starring their own craft brews paired with amazing fresh fish. This is such a unique experience and really clever overall. The new york location is intimate and chic. We decided to go for the specialty nigiri with beer tasting menu which features 9 different pieces and about 8 different glasses of beer. My only complaint about the experience was there was a very long wait between ordering and the first drinks being paired with our meal. But once it got started it was stunning! I enjoyed so many different pieces and thought the beer pairings were reminiscent of cocktails, champagne, and of course beer. It really made for a fun experience. You can also order appetizers and individual pieces/beers a la carte but frankly I feel like this is the way to go. Highly recommend coming here with a date or a friend.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh sushi, unique and interesting drink menu, cozy ambiance with fun music at an appropriate volume (not too loud!) Heated toilet seats lol. Overall amazing experience!

Yelp
Delicious sushi and cocktails. Highly recommend the chef's special plate. The quality of the sushi was unreal and they had very fun combinations.

Yelp
Did the tasting menu with beer pairings. Yikes, I don't know. The beers were good and plentiful so that part was enjoyable. The sushi though, simply not good and like another review says, ranks low in this city full of fantastic sushi options. They were all off in terms of flavor (too sweet, too bitter, etc) and totally masking the fish itself. It was rare to be able to taste the fish while covered so heavily in the seasonings and accoutrements. The place is nice though and the service was ok. Might go back for beers and such but would definitely skip the sushi.

Yelp
Absolutely in love with their tomato cocktail and cucumber salad! The nigiri was great and so was the California roll, but I wasn't crazy about the piece of salmon nigiri or the spicy tuna roll. Otherwise everything- food, drinks, and service were A+ ! My pictures don't do it justice.

Yelp
Love this place, great beer, amazing eats and friendly staff. If you're planning on going keep in mind it's a small space, making a reservation in advance is recommended

Yelp
Food was great. Service problems - but our waitress was wonderful. Problems started with seating us in a raised bar table (noisy) which I absolutely didn't want. That caused some problems before they figured out how to accommodate us in the dining area. I would never have made a reservation in the bar. Next problem was when one of the support staff spilled drinks over our food and splashed us. They needed to move us back to the bar area to the only oversized table in the Restaurant - 3 of us at a table that would fit 6-7 people. Not the best. Then they brought out at round of beers - I thought it was an apology. A nice gesture. Nope. Just moving us right along to the next course. Then we had to ask for them to bring out some of the food they trashed on the last course. They didn't replace it - we had to ask for it. Finally, they charged us $1.50 for a dab of wasab (Really? That would make the meal profitable?)i. Right. Charged us for literally a dab of wasabi. To be fair, they gave us a 10% reduction in the bill as an apology. Problem was they were just off. I guess as a new restaurant they just didn't have the kinks worked out. I expected them to be a bit more prepared and magnanimous in how they treated us. Surely not a Michelin star yet. Got a ways to go.

Yelp
Fantastic new spot! We did the tasting menu - so good! The portions were perfect, the service was exceptional and the ambiance was excellent. The tomato cocktail was one of the best drinks I've ever had in my life. I also appreciated that we were able to sub wine for beer for the tasting menu as I'm not a huge beer fan. Highly recommend dropping by for a special occasion or just a nice night out!

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place!! The food, service, ambience. It's my favorite new sushi spot in NYC. My favorite thing is that it has the neighborhood feel but can also be perfect for a special occasion. Fun, vibey atmosphere, great music, and the staff (particularly Daniella!) genuinely makes a great effort to get to know guests (particularly people from around the neighborhood). Very high quality sushi with a creative menu, but a much more festive atmosphere than other places in town. Highly recommend the Brewmaster's tasting menu. I don't drink beer but ordered it without and each course blew me away. Perfect for all occasions -- a neighborhood dinner with friends, date, impressing friends/family from out of town, or a special occasion. Can't wait to come back!!

Yelp
From start to finish, we were blown away with each course. We quickly learned that this was a vastly different design than the Chicago version, but it was unique and wonderful. Our server was knowledge and friendly. Each dish was delightful and unique. The timing was well spaced and we didn't want it to end! I would recommend for a special occasion.

Yelp
Had a very nice experience on a Thursday night. We did the Nine-Piece Brewmaster's Tasting and our waiter walked us through every dish and drink. The Waverly was my favorite pairing. The Shaved Black Truffle Rice Lager was very good and worth trying. The music was great and it's a nice vibe in the dining area.

Yelp
Something off about this place. Food wasn't bad - but extremely expensive, and they also asked for a Chef's Tip in addition to a Service Tip with the check which might be illegal and certainly wasn't cool. Service was weird- people asking to clear plates with food still on them. Seats a little uncomfortable. Environment oddly inauthentic. It gave us the creeps a bit.

Yelp
Everything is spectacular at Moody tongue, New York. Every food item is exquisitely presented. Freshness is expected and they deliver freshness. The beer pairings are out of this world; I tasted beers that are boutiquey and perfect for the fare. Managers, Jake and Daniela are wonderful. Bartenders Laura and Max are equally wonderful. In fact, the entire crew is cohesive, and they go well out of their way to please every single customer. In short, the food, the beer, pairings, the ambience, the service, the crew and the attitude are all spectacular. If I could give it six stars I would. Don't be surprised when they earn their Michelin star very very soon. Please go to Moody Tongue, New York. You'll go back again and again and again. Hey uh, Starkist, tell 'em Charlie sent 'ya.

Yelp
What an amazing meal by the team behind moody tongue in chicago. Their chicago location has two Michelin stars, so I went in with high hopes and this restaurant more than delivered! We were with a group of 3 couples and the girls who aren't traditional beer drinkers absolutely loved the beer options. The gyoza and tuna poke were amazing to start. The nigiri was outstanding each piece being better than the last. Highly recommend the torched scallop, scorched otoro, and the botan ebi. The spicy tuna hand roll was also a star for us.
