The 12 Best Chinese Bakeries In San Francisco - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The main reason to visit this bakery in Parkside is the Macau-style egg custard tarts, which are similar to Portuguese custard tarts, or pasteis de nata—lightly scorched top, smooth and milky custard, and flaky crusts. True to its name, the shop also sells almost two dozen types of sweet and savory bread buns, including cinnamon raisin, coconut, pork floss, and tuna. The almond black bean bun is nutty and sweet and a must-order." - megan zhang, julia chen 1, patrick wong

The 10 Best BBQ Pork Buns In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Squeeze your way into the line at Mr. Bread in Parkside whenever you want a pork bun that’s filled to the brim with cubed meat and has squishy bread that could fit right in with a toddler’s Jellycat collection. The takeout-focused bakery makes buns with caramelized edges that make the whole thing taste like a barbecue potato chip. Load up a box and take these to McCoppin Square nearby to eat in the grass." - julia chen 1, patrick wong

Mr. Bread Bakery - Review - Sunset - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The signature pastry at this bakery in Parkside is the Macau-style egg custard tarts, which are similar to Portuguese custard tarts, or pasteis de nata - lightly scorched top, smooth and milky custard, and very flaky crusts. Mr. Bread prepares Cantonese-style egg custard tarts, too, so you can order both to taste the difference. True to its name, the shop also sells almost two dozen types of sweet and savory bread buns, including cinnamon raisin, coconut, pork floss, and tuna. The almond black bean bun is nutty and sweet and is also a must-order. photo credit: Brit Finnegan" - Megan Zhang

Google
If you go on the weekends, the chances of scoring a freshly baked egg tart increases as there are more people picking up tarts. I like their regular egg tarts more than the Portuguese ones. The caramelized sugar top is too sweet for me. Maybe the younger folks like it more. Surprisingly, no line today at around 1pm. The buns are good here. I like their BBQ pork buns and curry buns. The bonus for me is sometimes seeing old high school friends while waiting in line. They also do birthday cakes with customized lettering. Solid Chinese bakery.

Google
Great pineapple bun with a delightfully flavorful and crunchy top, though the bread was a little dry. I went shortly before closing, so it probably wasn't as fresh. No wait on a random Thursday around 5pm. Vegetarians beware: the corn bun has ham in it (I sadly didn't consider this possibility when I ordered, silly me). I was enjoying it before I realized, so recommend for meat eaters!

Google
The go-to spot for birthday cakes in my boyfriend’s family. Light and fluffy cake with real whipped cream. Reasonable prices!

Google
The bakery itself is no frills but the food is amazing. I am addicted to the pineapple buns (soft, subtlety sweet, delicious crunch on top), BBQ pork buns (flavorful sweet bbq pork in a perfectly steamed light bun), and both the traditional and Portuguese egg tarts (super flaky crust, custard is perfect consistency, not too sweet). There are more"famous" places you can get these items but those places are not nearly as good as Mr Bread Bakery. There's a reason there is always a line out the door in the mornings. This is a cash-only place but everything is reasonably priced.

Neal

Google
The best egg tarts in San Francisco. This cash-only bakery sells all kinds of baked goods, but I highly recommend getting the egg tarts. They use puff pastry, unlike some other Chinese bakeries that use shortbread dough, and the tarts all look perfect. Each egg tart costs $2, which is on the expensive side, but it's worth it. In fact, when I visited, I bought all the regular egg tarts left, which was eight of them. The Portuguese egg tarts cost $2.30 each and have a caramelized top, giving them more complexity. The employees speak Cantonese and English. There is no restroom or seating, but there is a library and a park close by. You can phone in an order.

Google
Great bakery. Came for the egg tart, was not disappointed. One of the best in the city. They also make the Portuguese egg tarts (pastel de nata) which are also very good, but their egg tart to me is superior since it’s less sweet and has a lovely egg flavored custard. The crust on both versions are fantastic and flakey, really some of the best versions of each. Also got hot dog bun, taro bun, ham and egg bun, and pineapple bun, all good stuff. I’ve been on the hunt for the best pineapple bun in the city and this may very well be it. My partner loved the ham and egg bun! It’s such a simple thing, but Mr. Bread does an exceptional version of it.

Google
Not so hidden gem for Hong Kong style baked goods. Egg Tarts are filled with custard-y egg and pastry shell is flaky. BBQ pork bun is filled, not air pocket and the bread is fluffy. Same for the cocktail bun. Service is efficient and pleasant. Atmosphere is rustic and functional.

Rachel I.

Google
The portuguese egg tarts have great flavor and the hong kong style egg tarts have great texture. All their bread is amazing too.

Yelp
I have been going to Mr. Bread since they were located at their original spot across the street from Safeway. They make THE BEST mixed fruit filled cakes! The cakes are not so sweet but light and airy, and the fruit is always so fresh and flavorful. Every time I've brought one of these cakes to a birthday or a work function, it's been a hit. Not a piece of cake leftover! Oh, and the buns... the char siu, out of this world!

Yelp
I was in the mood for some buns, so I stopped by Mr. Bread. There was a short line when I went but it went by quickly. This is a great spot to pick up a box of baked goods. Everything is reasonably priced and yummy. I got a few pineapple buns, barbeque pork buns, egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts, and ham & egg bun. They are cash only!

Yelp
This is our go-to Chinese bakery for sponge cake--and it never disappoints. We've been coming here for years for every special occasion: birthdays, Mother's Day, holidays--you name it. The sponge cake is our absolute favorite. We've ordered both the 8-inch round and the 1/4 sheet, and they're always a hit. The cake is fluffy, soft, and fresh. The fruit on top is refreshing (although I do wish the middle tier of the cake had more fruits), and the whipped cream is light and not overly sweet. The flavors are perfectly balanced. We always call a few days in advance to place our order and schedule a pickup time. The bakery is small, but they run things very efficiently. There's no dedicated parking lot, so we usually find street parking or have someone wait in the car while picking it up. They also sell other Chinese baked goods, and everything we've tried has been very good--tasty and reasonably priced. Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for fresh, delicious Chinese sponge cake and classic bakery items!

Yelp
Tried Kwong So cake!! A pastry hasn't been seen for almost 30 years since I moved to U.S. service was just typical Cantonese style bakery. Old school decorating inside.

Yelp
Was walking through Taraval to look for something to drink, and stumbled upon this small mom and pop bakery. I've walked passed this place many times and always wondered how small businesses like this have lasted for so long, until today. I was definitely able to grab a water bottle, but also thought why not try one of their pastries. There I saw some fresh baked Portuguese Egg Tarts and thought I definitely had to try one! It was warm, jiggly like a souffle, and so smoooth with every bite! I made the mistake of only buying one, but if you're looking for a damn good egg tart, this is the place! Make sure to bring cash because it's cash only!
google avatar

Abbie N.

Yelp
I got an egg tart here and the Portuguese egg tart. I preferred the regular egg tart because the Portuguese one was too sweet. Cash only

Yelp
I would've never known about this compact family-run bakery on Taraval were it not for a local food vlogger named Mei Mei, who drove her mom all around the city to try all the available custard tarts. After going to all the usual suspects in Chinatown and elsewhere, most of which I've tried, they stopped here and raved about the tarts. OK, that was enough of an incentive for me to take the L line over. Well, on my first visit, I didn't get here until about fifteen minutes before closing. I should've known they'd be sold out of tarts. Since the owner caught me looking forlorn, I impulsively bought two items, the $2.50 Coconut Strudel, a flaky and spongey pastry shaped like a thick stick (photo: https://yelp.to/Oy6uNnWCpF). The other was the $2.50 Custard Horn. Although bigger than a tart, it made a nice substitute (photo: https://yelp.to/Lf-7jwN-vY). Both were satisfying treats, but hey, they weren't tarts. That didn't happen until today when I found myself in Parkside at lunchtime. It dawned on me that I could finally get a tart. Sure enough, they had them fresh on a tray on top of their display case. They had Egg Custard Tarts and Portuguese Custard Tarts, so for only $4.90, I bought one of each. They shared a thin, flaky shell. The plain egg one had a perfectly smooth custard filing (photo: https://yelp.to/PlcQMQDtyq), while the Portuguese one had a nice toasted top that lent a welcome texture to the tart (photo: https://yelp.to/xizR5mxluF). Thanks Mei Mei, and thank your mom. FOOD - 5 stars...I'm giving it up for the tarts AMBIANCE - 3 stars...a bit ramshackle but cozy SERVICE - 4.5 stars...industrious and friendly TOTAL - 5 stars...give me another Portuguese tart RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Yelp
Mr. Bread is worth visiting only for their Portuguese egg tarts and Hong Kong-style egg tarts--these are the standout items and the only reason I'd return. The tarts are fresh, flaky, and not overly sweet, striking the right balance of flavors and textures that make a great egg custard tart. Beyond that, the other baked goods don't impress. I always do a standard comparison by trying the BBQ bun, ham and egg bun, and egg tarts to gauge a bakery's overall quality. The ham and egg bun lacked sauce, making it dry compared to what other Chinese bakeries offer, and the portion of ham and egg was very minimal. The BBQ bun was unexpectedly salty rather than the usual sweet-savory balance--possibly just an off batch, but still disappointing. This is a takeout-focused spot with no seating inside, so it's mainly for quick pickups or catering orders. Parking is metered street parking nearby, which can be a bit of a hassle at busy times. On the positive side, the bakery is clean, family-owned, and the staff is friendly. If I come back, it'll only be for the egg tarts.

Yelp
Seriously the BEST potats (portugese custard tarts) in SF! I was recommended this place by my friend who'd been coming here since childhood. Once I tried their potat there was no going back. It's a typical asian bakery that had no seating inside (cash only!) I've also gotten their curry beef bun which is also very yummy. Been wanting to try their corn bun but it's always sold out Note: they sometimes close for a couple days without notice (sign on door) so I've gone there twice before where I left sad

Yelp
Fresh authentic Asian egg tarts ! Hole in the wall mom n pop establishment with "egg-cellent" portuguese egg tarts and Chinese Egg Tarts and other baked goodies including Asian low sugar Whipped Cream Cakes popular for a spongy interior with fruit galore. Always a line out the door because they bake the egg tarts several times a day so you receive a hot or warm crusted tart ! So delicious

Yelp
Thanks to my Uber Yelp friend AL L, Mr.Bread came up on the radar when I asked who had the best Chinese egg tarts. Of course Golden Gate came up. ...I was surprised to hear of this previously unknown bakery to me as his and his wife's favorite stop. So of course had to get there to try them! During a particular day filled with food collecting, sightseeing, and Yelp event attending in the city, Kyra K and I made it to Mr.Bread. The bakery is very unassuming; even easy to miss. Do yourself a favor and don't! We got there soon after lunch and already found the egg custard tarts all out. "Five minutes wait five minutes okay?" After ordering a sampling of Portuguese tarts, coconut tarts, and "almost ready" egg custard tarts, waited off to the side. While waiting the small store filled up fast! And one after another, their selections sold out. Enjoyed taking them to a park to sample with friends, then some home to share with family. While the Portugese tarts were all my friends favorite with the brulee like topping. My cousin hands down favored the coconut tart. For me it was the less sweet, absolutely custardy egg tart. Good problem to have... something for everyone! For the tarts...five stars! Agree, Mr.Bread added into my new rotation of "must stops" while in the city. Love that the shop is outside of Chinatown on Taraval St and definitely easier parking.

Yelp
While hanging out together, my friend Li Y. mentioned hearing great things about Mr. Bread's egg tarts. With the whole day ahead and being in the area, I insisted on taking us so we could check out the acclaimed shop! The bakery is a true local, mom-and-pop, hole-in-the-wall shop! Very unassuming both inside and outside with a small bakery display case and a storefront to squeeze around 6 people. Known for their egg tarts, you can see other baked goods displayed as well as a menu. The ladies working were efficient and cordial at packing the other. Depending on the time of day and what you want, you may have to wait for things to come out of the oven. I'll be real, I don't like the taste or texture of sweet custard--being dairy-free it's in my favor to avoid it. With my kind friend Li Y. graciously picking out the baked goods and paying for us, we decided to sample. Though I don't like egg tarts, the ones at Mr. Bread surprised me! Their Portuguese Custard Tarts are mind-blowing delicious, sweet, and flaky. The Egg Custard Tart was silky while the Coconut Custard Tart was dense, crumbly, and heavy on the coconut. I found them to be fine but the Portuguese Custard Tart to be the true winner! Though egg tarts aren't necessarily my favorite thing, they might be for you! If that's the case, Mr. Bread on Taraval is a must for those in the city and Bay Area try! I know I'll be recommending it to my friends. The location is small but somewhat easy to find with metered or neighborhood parking around.

Yelp
11/2/2024 Dan Tat, egg tarts, or custard tarts as we call them; are nostalgia in a bite. These eggy sweet goodness are confections that can be found in many bakeries nowadays. These question is; how many are them that are actually good? Where: this hidden gem is located in the Sunset District on 19th Avenue and Taraval. This district is primarily an enclave for the Chinese. One would say that this is a classic mom and pop run establishment akin to a hole in the wall. This bakery is also not hyped, meaning it flys under the radar. What: this bakery produces most classic Chinese baked goods from cream cakes to baked baos, but I came here for one thing only, or two since their egg tarts come in two varieties. The tarts: the classic dan tart has a crisp shell that's lavished with lard (yes, lard as opposed to butter), and has a jiggly custard that's sweetened. The second type of egg tart, comes from Portugal, where the custard is browned, and the custard is more jiggly. The comparison: San Francisco has another bakery famed for their dan tats, but that they're not always in operation. How do the two compare? Golden Gate Bakery's dan tats, like the macaron, prices go up annually; rich buttery shell, and jiggly custard that tastes like condensed milk. Mr. Bread's dan tat is similar, though the shell isn't as buttery; but the size, flavor, and overall lower price point - makes their dan tat a worthy contender. Is the hype real? Those looking for a Golden Gate Bakery dan tat will certainly like those from Mr. Bread. As this bakery flys under the radar, there's not so much of a line here. Do bring cash as there is no credit or tap to pay options. Final Thoughts: I bought a box of 9 to fill, 4 classic and 5 Portuguese - to share and to devour myself. I left two to chill overnight and reheated it; I was impressed as the tart remained fresh tasting. Other bakery dan tats that I've had, the texture and flavor goes south overnight. Definitely worth visiting if ever in the area.

Yelp
3.5 based on custard tarts Egg custard tart: $2.30 3.5*. Crust was ok, less flaky than GG. Custard was good. GG bakery is the dan tat OG tho in Chinatown which is challenging to get to & well worth the hassle. Portugese custard tart: $2.60 solid 3*. Crust was ok, different than egg tart. Custard was good, a bit too sweet for my taste. Both were kept on a warming tray, which is a plus bc custard tarts are best warm.
google avatar

Joyce S.

Yelp
I love their egg tarts. Soft and sweet egg custard with flaky buttery crust. $2.30 for 1 egg tart. Cash only Sweetest cashier Lots of yummy pastries Meter parkings

Yelp
Ordered 18 Portuguese egg tarts for a potluck and they were still warm when I picked them up. They were a hit. Delicious!

Ansel L.

Yelp
Food was just ok with average service. However, there were lots of flies inside the shop and some inside the food cases. Portions were also small, and it was a bit overpriced. Hard to say I would return.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
I recently discovered this spot thanks to my sister, who's been a regular for a while. Knowing my love for egg tarts, she insisted I try their Portuguese egg tarts. When I arrived, there was a line out the door--a good sign for any bakery. The place is small, with a standing area and no tables, so it's more of a grab-and-go kind of spot. The staff was friendly and helped me with my order, even though I arrived around 3 PM and most items were sold out. Fortunately, they had another tray of egg tarts available. After trying numerous bakeries, I can confidently say these egg tarts are among the best. I'd rate them a solid 5/5. I'll definitely be back and can't wait to share this hidden gem with others. Only con is that parking can be tough so make sure to be prepared for that.

Yelp
A solid asian bakery! and nearby stern grove festival area. cash only and the owner was very kind. - portugese egg tart was delectable. flavor was on point! - banana cakes were very interesting and new to me. slightly sweet and doughy, but addicting - taro and beef curry pastries were classic like what you'd expect but nothing mind blowing
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
I am surprised that I like their bread the least given they are Mr Bread... I got a BBQ Pork Bun, a Curry Beef and a Hot Dog Bun. Ended up discarding the breads and eating the fillings with bread from AA Bakery. Mr Bread's bread dough could use some salt and sugar to enhance its flavor. Their Egg Tart is better, especially because of the crispy shell. However, I personally prefer the egg tarts from Yummy Bakery. These are less custardy and can use more crust. The Portuguese Egg Tarts are worth trying. One thing that make these special is the caramelization in the crust in addition to the tart tops. However, I prefer the ones from Suzanne's in Millbrae since these are too sweet.
google avatar

Quynh L.

Yelp
This is my family's and I's go-to spot for egg tarts! They are your typical Chinese bakery, so you better know what you want by the time you get to the front of the line and have cash in your hand bc they will be shouting "what do you want?" The store is also small and cramped so leave your kids and partners outside! The egg tart (regular) is $2.30 and is the best you can get in the Bay without breaking your wallet! It's always served toasty warm with a not so sweet gooey custard. We always make the 1 hr drive from SJ here just for these delicious yellow things! The only downside is that they don't pick up their calls on busier days to order ahead :/ Nevertheless, the best in the bay!
google avatar

Cecily I.

Yelp
This is my go to spot for Portuguese egg tarts. Be prepared to wait but it's worth the wait!!! If you're making a big order consider calling g in ahead of time.
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
Portuguese tarts were fresh but too smooshy for me. Would've preferred a regular egg tart? Was really hoping and expecting something more like what I had in Lisbon. Bbq pork buns were too bready and dense. And small. Cash only.
google avatar

Personality S.

Yelp
The types of bread they sell are so varied and creative. Love both sweet and savory options. Very good prices too that are hard to find elsewhere. Taro as well as the Portuguese tarts are my fav.
google avatar

Michele T.

Yelp
Office potluck and I was asked to bring in a dessert. Picked up coconut, egg, and Portuguese tarts from Mr. Bread. Picked them up at about 7:30am, and they were still warm. No line when I first arrived, but line was there as I was leaving. Never had the coconut tart before - full of coconut. My fave is still the Portuguese and egg tarts. $2.30 for egg or coconut. $2.60 for the Portuguese tart.
google avatar

Alexis M.

Yelp
What I ordered: -Portuguese Egg Tart [4/5] _ I discovered Mr. Bread through a friend who shared one with me, and it was so delicious that I had to return for more. I'm particularly fond of their Portuguese egg tarts. Priced at $2.60 each, they are worth every penny for their delightful taste. The egg tarts are baked throughout the day, ensuring they are always fresh. The store is often busy, with long lines, so be prepared to wait. Also, remember to bring cash as they only accept cash payments. The shop is quite small with no seating available. The staff is always friendly and efficient with orders. If you love egg tarts, I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
delicious pastel de nata, and great bbq pork bun. The tart was my favorite - delicious rich custard and a flaky shell. the bun was good, nice flavor, wish there was more filling for a bit more $. small shop, cash only.

Yelp
After several friends have recommended that I try Mr. Bread for its egg tarts and BBQ pork buns, I've had it on my to-try list. Since I'm rarely in the southern part of the Sunset District, I haven't had a chance to try until this past weekend. I was there on Saturday at 3:30 and found parking almost in front. With no line of customers and given the time of day, I had a fear that things would be sold out. The display cases have pastries, muffins, tarts, cookies, cakes and eggs tarts. On the menu board, they list all the buns they sell, sweet on the left and savory on the right. I ordered egg tarts, Portuguese egg tarts and BBQ pork buns. Picked up some pineapple custard buns for a relative. Couldn't get the wheat buns for them as they were sold out. About 15 minutes later, I tried the egg and Portuguese egg tarts. They were still warm. The crust to a good egg tart is having a golden and flaky crust and these hit the mark. The filling were smooth, eggy and creamy. The egg tart was a little less sweet than the Portuguese tart, which probably has more sugar to allow for the browning of the custard tart. But they both were not overly sweet. The Portuguese tarts are $2.60 and the egg tarts are $2.30. Are the infamous ones in Chinatown at $3.75 60% better? Ah, no. The BBQ pork bun had good amount of filing. It had more of a savory taste and didn't have the bbq pork sweetness flavor, which I prefer. I'm glad I finally made it here and enjoyed the delicious egg tarts. If in the area, I'll be stopping by again.

Yelp
A classic staple of this area! The curry buns are my favorite! Note, cash only! Bakery on Taraval Street just off of 19th Avenue. Parking can be tough, but the lines attest that this place is worth it. Besides the curry buns, the chashu is good, and so are most of their other offerings. Note, the egg and ham now has a really small slice of ham (a coworker thought they had forgotten the ham entirely), but it's in there :-)
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
While Mr. Bread is known for it's Portuguese tart & Custard tart, it really sucks that they don't make anymore if they run out by 4pm, even though the place doesn't close till 5:30pm. It's a bummer cuz a lot of people can't get there earlier.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Mr. Bread is your classic Chinese bakery. It is a small shop that's take out only and cash only. The prices here are cheap and the breads are so good! As soon as you walk in, you just smell pastries being baked. I showed up before 9 am on a Monday to make sure there was easy to find street parking for free. I would definitely come back! I got the following: * Egg Tart and Portuguese Tart - Great and they were not too sweet! * Pineapple Bun - I meant to order the custard filled one but I think they didn't hear that. * Cinnamon Stick - It was very flaky and with the right amount of sweet, sugary cinnamon. * Corn Bun - Sweet, soft bread, good amount of corn!
google avatar

Charlene L.

Yelp
The Portuguese egg tarts from Mr. Bread are amazing. Definitely call ahead to see if they have any available or can prepare them for pickup. We liked them more than their regular egg tarts. Their other items looked delicious as well so we'll have to try some other items next time. To note, this place is cash only!
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Delicious pineapple buns! I also tried one of the pork buns, which had a good amount of meat inside. Both buns were tasty and soft
google avatar

Eddie E.

Yelp
Revalidated that the Portuguese egg tarts are bomb (crispiness of the crust is amazing). Everything else unfortunately is subpar. Coconut studdle is very dry imo.
google avatar

Jessica E.

Yelp
Great egg custards! Crispy on the outside and soft and jiggly in the inside. I love both kinds. It's a go to place to pick up pastries for friends or coworkers.
google avatar

Brent F.

Yelp
TLDR: get the Portuguese egg tarts! Unassuming place out in the sunset, not far from 19th along Taraval. It doesn't look like much but when you see the line for a place like this it usually means it's great. I have a soft spot for egg tarts and in particular the Portuguese style tarts. I tried a bunch of stuff here and the regular egg tarts are good, a solid egg tart but definitely not the best I had had but the Portuguese egg tarts were amazing, one of the best I have ever had and this is comparing to Macau, they are really great! I have been a few times and the second time I had to wait about 20 minutes as they were baking a fresh batch of tarts and it was so worth it to get them piping hot fresh out the oven. I have only gone on weekdays and they do seem to sell out but keep making more but weekends may be a different story. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Harish J.

Yelp
No fuss, small bakery that delivers amazing baked goods! We were here for the Portuguese Tarts (Pasteis de Nata) originally but ended up getting their Sponge cake too. The tarts are delicately sweet and delightfully flaky. The sponge cake had amazing texture and was not too sweet. It's a cash only place and service was quick and good.
google avatar

Buddy P.

Yelp
The buns are great. close vicinity makes me biased, Portuguese tarts are fire. #nogatekeeping
google avatar

Megan N.

Yelp
Some of the best egg tarts I've had! The filling to pastry ratio is just how I like it... LOTS of filling with a thin and flakey pastry. It's a cute little bakery with other options too, would love to try more things
google avatar

Ju D.

Yelp
Strawberry cake from Mr Bread. From reading another reviewer, I also was able to request a chocolate layer cake (extra charge). Cake is moist, fresh, not too sweet. Enjoyed by everyone, adults and kids alike.
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
My coworker recommended this place and it's a hidden gem but SO good! I normally like the Dan tat but got the Portuguese egg tart and the custard center was perfectly sweet and creamy and the outside was really flaky. I'm a fan of the Japanese karepan (curry bread) but I may like the curry buns more than curry bread now. The filling had SO much meat and lots of pepper so may taste a little spicy to some on a warm and sweet bun. I'm not usually around this area of SF but can't wait to come back!
google avatar

A L.

Yelp
Best place to get custards in the sunset area. The other buns sold are good too. Staff are friendly. Lines can get long certain times of day. Not uncommon to see people get multiple dozen of custards and buns while waiting in line. So...selection may be low or unavailable until they are restocked. Either case, the staff will give an estimate when they will be restocked.

Yelp
Got here 5 minutes before they closed. I either met the sweet baker or the owner. Not a fancy bakery but the Asian pastries are good. I especially like the bbq buns and banana rice mochi. The buns are firm and meaty, the banana rice mochi is soft and not too sweet. I also have enjoyed their walnut cookies, strawberry cake. Next time their sponge cakes, egg tarts.............All yummie and reasonably priced.

Yelp
We make the drive from across the bay (Danville). We like the Baos from Mr. Bread, taste is lighter on the SALT with good flavor. 18 to 2 dozen - They freeze well. 20 seconds in the microwave and they taste just like fresh. Sometimes I have to get Extra for requests from our neighbors.

Yelp
Oh, my word! I am so sorry I didn't find Mr. Bread sooner, but am incredibly excited to have them on my radar now! I stopped in on a drive back from SFO to Marin when I saw on Yelp that they had both pork buns and Portuguese egg tarts (my girls' favorites). What I didn't fully appreciate until I walked in was how much else they had to offer! With nearly every item costing between $1.20 and $2.00, I ended up bringing home a huge box of items to try; more than half a dozen flavors of buns plus both types of egg tarts (Portuguese and traditional). The dough on all of the buns was some magical blend of pillowy on the inside with a durable skin on the outside with just the right amount of sweetness. My husband and girls' favorites were the pork buns and black bean almond buns; I, on the other hand, could eat the curry beef bun every day for a week and still go back for more. They are cash only, but there's a bank two doors down. I'll be back again and again for sure.

Yelp
We always get our birthday cake here. We always order the fruit cake. Super moist. Delicious.

Yelp
Came here specifically to try their Portuguese egg tart, and it was pretty good. I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had, but definitely one of the better ones I've had in the Bay Area. Their egg filling tastes legit; however, the crust is not as flakey as I'd hoped for. The one bakery in San Jose has the best crust, but their filling didn't taste good.... I wish I could combine the two and it'd be perfect! We also tried an eclair. $3 for a small eclair that tasted mediocre. I would recommend just stick to the Portuguese egg tart. Will I come back if I'm craving Portuguese egg tart? For sure! But would I go out if my way to come here? No thank you~

Yelp
Mr. Bread is popular for their portugese tarts for good reason - flaky tart shell, perfectly (but not overly) sweet egg custard, and always fresh out the oven. The Macau-style portugese tarts here are a bit wider in size than what I've tried in Europe and they don't caramelize as much of each tart, but every bite keeps its toasty flavor and crisp. When eaten right away, it's a perfect little bite of heaven in a $2.50 tart. Feasting on your tart as soon as you come out the bakery is ideal, but note that the bakery itself does not have seating and is overall a narrow store. With that said - the tart also heats up great in a toaster oven or air fryer. Beyond portugese tarts, Mr. Bread also offers the standard fare of fresh Chinese-style bread baked daily and made-to-order cakes. They only accept cash as a mom & pop bakery, and can take larger phone orders in advance. Would recommend those eyeing portugese tarts to come 1-2hrs before close time, since they do sell out by weekend late afternoons.

Yelp
I wrote a lot of reviews but rarely do I declare "This is da place!!!". Well, good HK style milk tea can be found in many bakery in SF, theirs are good too and I usually came here for Portuguese egg tart and milk tea, this time I tried something I'm gonna have to declare... One of the best Curry beef bun I've had! The bread is very soft, curry beef flavor just right. A little bit of a kick on the curry. I've had their pineapple bun but I prefer another place in sunset. It's pretty good. Just the other one use more butter on the buns.
