The Best Yemeni Restaurants in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"This traditional Yemeni restaurant is known for its lamb haneeth. The lamb shanks are marinated in an array of traditional spices, then slow roasted so the meat falls off the bone. The tender lamb is then plopped down on a colorful bed of basmati rice and served with dried black lemons and zahawig, a spicy red sauce. It also comes with turmeric-spiced lamb soup or a side salad. For around $20, it’s a really good deal. The lamb fahsa is also a worthy choice; it arrives in a bubbling cauldron with a side of fresh bread baked in a clay oven." - Danny Palumbo

If you're craving authentic Yemeni cuisine, Sanaa is a hidden gem in East Dearborn that delivers big on flavor and hospitality. The food is incredibly delicious, from the fall-off-the-bone haneeth to the rich, bubbling fahsah served with freshly baked bread, every bite was full of warmth and tradition. The restaurant recently added private seating areas, which made the experience even more comfortable and peaceful. My mom even said it was the best Yemeni food she’s had in a long time, and that says a lot! The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the overall vibe feels like home. Highly recommend stopping by for a meal that’s both satisfying and memorable.

Honestly, i like the guys working here but the quality and quantity is getting worse every day. The owners seem to be getting very greedy. Not good. Please, keep the quantity and quality like they were. And not to mention the prices are ridiculous.

Sanaa is definitely one of my favorite places to order from, and I highly recommend it! The food is incredible, especially their grilled chicken—honestly, no one makes it like they do. The flavors are always spot-on, and the chicken is always cooked to perfection. I also have to highlight their amazing customer service. On one occasion, my order was mixed up, but Ibrahim, one of their staff members, took care of everything and fixed it right away. It’s rare to find such attention to detail, even with takeout orders.

The price felt high, we were given plastic forks and bottled water. Which felt cheap. The soup was flavorful but the meal wasn't anything special

Dude, this was the kind of food that I totally wanted without knowing that I wanted it. The lamb whatever the heck it is that I got, the lamb soup... Mannnnn So good.. The Lamb was melt in your mouth and had a little bit of juice on the lamb and basmati. "You likea the juice!?" I mean and also there was enough portion for me to eat like half of it and take the rest home, and I eat like a horse. I for sure am going back for this.

Google
Highly recommend. Excellent Yemeni cuisine with affordable price. I had breakfast there I liked the Mulawah bread which was quite authentic. I also had LAHM SUGHAR it was really good meat. The Milk tea was super. I would suggest them not to add sugar to the tea let the customer add it by himself.

Google
The worse food they take too long and they have kids running that place they serve fahsah that's damn near empty and we asked for rice and lamb for 5 ppl they have little rice If I can give this place a rating of 0 I would the worse experience I've had in a restaurant

Where? Home!

Google
I love the customer service, Food is good, especially salad and Saltah+Malooj and the tea is also good but too sugary. Only thing they need to work on little bit more is cleaning dishes with soap, other than that, I never even thought of trying a different restaurant than Sanaa. Keep up the good work brothers!

Yelp
Gave this restaurant two chances. The food was sloppy and the employees were disrespectful and rude both times. Please learn how to respect your female guests.

Yelp
In the spirit of supporting small businesses, I wanted to order from a restaurant that alot of people probably don't think to eat from. One of the more underappreciated cuisines in the local area is Yemeni. While Lebanese is the dominant influence here in metro Detroit, restaurants like Sana'a offer a different take on Arab food that highlights a different array of herbs/spices and places more emphasis on lamb. The lamb haneeth with basmati was tender and it had a nice crust on the outside. The rashosh bread (which could be a meal by itself) was also a good complement to the meat and rice. I felt like my order could have used more lamb and less rice, but it was still enough to feed two people. The dressing for the greens was quite acidic and helps cut some of the richness from the fatty lamb.

Yelp
The place is under new management and it may look hidden but believe me this place is amazing. I've had lots of Yemeni food and this place has the best Fahsa around. Absolutely delicious and spicy and meaty. The rice and lamb haneeth also tasted very tasty. Their prices are affordable as well. And the Service was respectful and kind. I will be back.

Yelp
another home run with this restaurant today. I ordered charcoal grilled chicken. It is so tasty although it takes 40 minutes to 45 minutes to be cooked it's worth the wait.

Yelp
They need to add updated menu with updated prices...!lamb Haneeth is actually $27! I will upload once I can.

Yelp
The closet thing to homemade Sanani/Yemeni food in Michigan. Great everything, literally! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is it's a little dirty sometimes. But if you've ever eaten in Sanaa, all the restaurants there are a tad messy too ‍.

Yelp
Take a trip to Sam City in East Dearborn for a classic Yemeni meal a most excellent experience. Sana'a's Old City One of the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world (others being Jericho, Damascus and Aleppo), Sana'a is believed to have been founded by Shem, the son of Noah. As a result, the city has the unlikely nickname of "Sam City". A absolutely explosion of flavor many Yemeni folks drive from around metro Detroit to enjoy a taste of home. I asked our superstar waitress Katie Rose to have chef make me special 20 buck Yemen Food platter OMG fantastic with half Yemeni Chicken, Tender Moist Lamb on a bed of the Famous Yemen Rice and hot sizzling bowl of Saltah Saltah (Arabic: ) is a Yemeni dish. It is widely eaten in northern parts of the country. It is mainly served for lunch. The base is a brown meat stew called maraq, a dollop of fenugreek froth, and sahawiq or sahowqa (a mixture of chillies, tomatoes, garlic, and herbs ground into a salsa). A couple fresh hot outta the oven, Malawah Bread is one of the many kinds of bread eaten in Yemen. What makes it unique is that it is layered and folded with butter or ghee inside which makes it very tasty. She had a special Yemeni Chicken topped salad. Katie brought a couple cups of deliciousness Yemeni Tea Free for everyone a custom of true Yemeni restaurant. Easy to find large parking lot in rear. A must visit for a unique cultural experience like no other. #yemeni #malawahbread #dearborncitygov #sanaayemen #letsguide #motorcitymunchers

Yelp
I have visited every Yemeni restaurant in the Detroit metro area, and have tried all of their lamb haneeth. I can honestly say that this place has the best lamb haneeth hands down. The place is clean and the owner (Ahmed) is very understanding and helpful. They have the best hot lamb soup and everything is fresh and full of flavor. I highly recommend this place above any other middle eastern restaurant in the area. Check it out!

Yelp
The bread came with holes all over and burnt. It was difficult to eat since the bread was burnt and hard.

Yelp
Wow, I've never been so satisfied in my life, the food was absolutely splendid. The Haneeth would melt in my mouth, and the Gallaba (sautéed pieces of lamb with veggies), was lean and tender. I also got the Shrimp Gallaba and boy was it amazing. Not only was the food great, but the service was great also, Hassan I believe his name was, was kind and explained the menu to me and answered every question I had. Thank you Hassan.

Yelp
I ordered to go, have not dined in yet. When I arrived, my order was ready so didn't have to wait. I got fahsah, zorbian rice, and bread. The portion were huge! Took me 3 days to finish. Explains why their prices are a little high. The lamb was well cooked, very tender. I didn't like all the fried onion on top but thankfully they weren't mixed in. The fahsah was good, even reheated, which was surprising. Would definitely go back. Just wish they had delivery that wasn't through an app!

Yelp
Amazing food . Way better than sheeba . The hummus is awesome . Fahsah was spicy good. Gallabha was also excellent

Yelp
They have a great selection and quality of food. As for the price it is absolutely fantastic as well. They give you a plate of fresh Yemeni bread, bowls of broth, and side salads. Kind and quick service, casual dining in a chatty atmosphere. And the service there is top notch.

Yelp
Yum. My first try at Yemeni cuisine and it was a hit. Ordered the combo for two with a co-worker and we both loved every dish. Our hostess/server was super friendly and graciously helped us with our feast. Great experience and we will go back!

Sammy S.

Yelp
Good quality Yemeni food decent service / prices. Ate there once looking forward to trying it again.

Yelp
This place was horrible, the service was horrible overall THE worst experience I have ever had in my entire life. We placed an order and waited a whole entire hour and a half. We were told the Haneeth would take 25 min and we said that was fine. After an hour and a half of waiting and only half of our orders making it to the table we just decided to leave. Something as simple as a hummus, should not take over an hour! No apology or acknowledgement at all for the horrible customer service. First and also last time my family will be attending this location!
