15 Black-Owned Pop-Ups Across LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Whether it’s lobster tacos, honey-glazed lamb chops, catfish served with a three-cheese mac and cheese, is there anything Deon Steward can’t cook? Apparently not. He’s the chef and owner of Munchie Madness, a pop-up restaurant located in Compton. They drop a new menu of offerings every morning on Instagram, ranging from double-layer nachos to honey BBQ chicken wings served with Cajun fries. Check their Instagram for the latest updates." - kat hong

LA's Best Dishes: The Infatuation's favorite meals of the week. - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Guess what, everyone? I finally did it! No, not replace the driver’s license that’s been missing for eight months now, something even better - I got to try Nünchi. After months of pining over every single photo creator Lexie Park posts to her Instagram - including glowing jelly cakes, hyper-real corn desserts, and edible vaporwave dreamscapes - I finally managed to secure an order for an apple yuzu cheesecake this past week. Did I wait a super-long time to eat it because it was so stunning? Yes. Was it creamy and slightly-tart? And did it taste exactly like freshly picked apples? Absolutely x 2. Will I be ordering from her again? The answer just might surprise you (literally, duh). - Kat Hong, Staff Writer" - The Infatuation Los Angeles Crew

33 Great Los Angeles Pop-Up Restaurants To Know Right Now - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Roll cakes decorated with flowers. Lotus rice that’s been stained pink. And jelly mooncakes in the shape of corn on the cob? At Nünchi, the lines between art and food aren’t just blurred — they cease to exist. Equal parts Korean pop-up, dessert catering, and vaporwave dreamscape, everything here seems too pretty to eat — but maybe that’s the point? "Classic Cake, $110 Yes, $110 might seem like a lot for a dessert, but at Nunchi, cakes aren’t just cakes - they’re works of art. Just think of this as investing in a Rothko or Jackson Pollock… except it probably won’t last as long." - Kat Hong

LA's Best Pop-Ups Of 2020 - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"How does one begin to describe Nünchi? Is it a Korean pop-up? LA’s most stylish dessert destination? The ultimate ’80s vaporwave dreamscape? How about all of the above? At Nünchi, the brainchild of former fashion designer Lexie Park, the lines between art and food aren’t just blurred - they cease to exist. Mesmerizing pomegranate cheesecakes glitter via Instagram. Kimbap stuffed with purple rice sit symmetrically in a circle, as if plucked out of a Wes Anderson film. And in her latest collaboration - with Eagle Park brick-and-mortar Chifa - Park has devised her most brilliant, mimetic creation yet: A cob-shaped dessert made with light purple almond jelly, chicha morada syrup, and real bits of corn. - KH" - Brant Cox, Kat Hong, Brett Keating, James Montgomery

Super fun candy store with kosher option options! Fresh ice cream and gelato is available as well and a build your own bag station so you can grab all of your favorite sweet treats.

This was our first visit to munchies. This is really a sweet tooth’s dream. The gelato was fantastic. The razzle ice cream was to die for (or maybe to live for). I would also recommend the fruit smoothie. The shelves are filled with all kinds of candies and chocolate. We found the prices to be reasonable and fair. What I liked most was the ability to buy I really nice gift for our Shabbat host and the ability to buy some nice wines as well. Their wine selection is fantastic. Highly recommend this as your “sweet treat” or “sugar high” (or maybe Sugar Chai… ok, that was a bad dad joke) destination.

Google
This place is an amazing store. There's easy parking in front, which helps. When you go in, they have an amazing variety of candy, chocolate, ice cream, etc. So much that you would get lost looking for specific items, except that it's so well organized that you can find anything you need in just a second. The entire left side of the store has candies by weight, which is great for parties. The right side has lots of chocolates, even non dairy available. They have great displays of trays to give as gifts already set up and ready to go. They also have tons of specific larger candies, which are great for kids prizes. The back has a great wine selection, with good pricing and wide variety. There's plenty of sweet, dry, aged, French, etc. Wines to choose from. They have great customer service as well, the employees know the prices, and are very helpful if your looking for something specific. They also have soft serve ice cream and slushy drinks. It's a fun place to shop, great for special occasions, good for even just a little pick me up, and amazing place to bring your kids.

It was a fun place with lots of choices! I would have given it five stars but the service left a bit to be desired.

A gift was sent to my family for Hanukkah. It arrived with bugs in it (or something very wrong - take a look for yourself). I called the owner with the request that he reimburse our friend who sent it to us directly from Munchies. The owner responded by berating me (how dare I accuse him of sending bad candy!), and escalating the conversation to his hanging up on me. All that I was asking is that he reimburse the person who paid for it (who wasn't me). I never asked for anything more - no replacement, credit or anything. I spoke in a tone that was firm, clear and professional. It made me wonder, had I been a man, if I would be treated differently. Munchies is not Menschlekeit. This kind of customer service is deeply problematic, resembling something that makes Jews look bad.

Yelp
Absolutely adorable family-owned Kosher candy shop! Many of my friends who grew up in the area have fond childhood memories of scoring a sweet treat at this old fashioned candy store. If you are attending a bar mitzvah, bat mitzvah, bris or Jewish wedding anytime soon, this is an excellent place to get a nice gift basket or party platter for the occasion. When you enter the store, there will be tables on your right followed by a great-looking ready-to-scoop ice cream selection under the glass a big menu and an attentive staff member to help you make a selection and ring you up. Take your time filling a plastic bag with unique homemade candy from around the world. My favorites are flavors like saffron marzipan white chocolate with pistachio and rose. Yum! Order a coffee drink, milkshake, sandwich or slice of cake and take a seat to enjoy it or make your kiss and coworker's day by showing up with a platter of delicious desserts. I chose to buy my friends some candy at nostalgic Munchies because I remembered something special about the checkout from years ago. At the register, you can donate your spare change to a few different very special charities such as humanitarian aid for victims of terrorist attacks and hate crimes. I got a tax return which I'm turning into a cool Yelp list. You're welcome to join me! Top ten local family owned-business that collect and contribute to local and international charities. I'm dedicating my spare change to the cool charity of choice for ten small businesses in LA. This is one of my favorite charities so far.:) Shalom Munchies!

Yelp
What a wonderland! Awesome chocolate selection and if you have a pork allergy like my mom but you love gummy candy then you gotta check out their peach gummies made with fish gelatin! What a treasure!

Yelp
An amazing kosher sweet shop with candy, ice cream, and more. A huge selection. Better than the many kosher markets in the Jewish district.
google avatar

Yelp
Munchies occupies a jam packed store front on Pico in the Pico Robertson neighborhood filled with interesting restaurants, most being kosher. This joint has ice cream but is mostly filled to the gills with, get this, every kind of candy one would ever consider. I am not a candy person, but I wandered in and with the help of the store employee, I purchased a bag of assorted chocolates filled with different fruits and coffee. There were no Umpa Lumpas, but plenty of candy to choose from so you can relieve your childhood and for a few moments, be a kid in a candy store again.
google avatar

Elizabeth F.

Yelp
I have been coming to Munchies for years to get prizes for my students and for class treats after a short walk to their store. My only complaint is the use of plastic straws and plastic covers on the icees which most people do not recycle.
google avatar

Ami K.

Yelp
the gelato smacks. also got a ton of candy from the serve yourself section. fun place. bussin selection.

Yelp
Just a so so shop. The workers are less than friendly. Also they are not following mask protocols during this covid time. That's plays a huge factor in times like these.

Yelp
I used to like this place when I used to live close by. Went to buy some sweets and the website list hours until 10pm on Monday. Now is 9:30 and it's closed. Please update Yelp and list correct hours. Was driving here 1 hour to see closed doors.

Yelp
Huge selection of candies, dried fruits, nuts, ice cream, shakes, and so much more. Real friendly atmosphere. And the frozen banana was absolutely fantastic.

Yelp
This is a great place to get candy and ice cream. They also make beautiful gift baskets. Their pricing is very reasonable. This place is completely kosher as well. Metered parking on the street.

Yelp
A friend and I just walked into this establishment to buy candy and when we entered, loudly said hello to the woman who was working, but she ignored us. We looked around for a minute, but still were not acknowledged. I thought this was odd so we decided to leave. When we left, we walked right past the woman who was working and she still did not say "hello" or "goodnight" or acknowledge us in anyway. I don't know what kind of shift she was having, but her attitude totally turned me off from spending any money here.

Yelp
Best Kosher Candy Store in LA hands down.

Yelp
Large variety of candy and chocolate covered pretzels. They also have ice cream and everything in the store is kosher !!

Yelp
Best candies in the world 11\10. the service is so good and everyone is so nice. highly recommend the chocolate swirl ice cream its so good

Lisa S.

Yelp
Under new ownership and boy, what a difference! It's light, bright, and clean. Their gelato is delicious. They have both dairy and non dairy. Espresso, cappuccino, afogato, they've got it all. Not to mention the extensive candy selection. They've also added a nice little section with to go food items if you feel like grabbing a salad. Most important is the customer service. They are super nice and welcoming. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp

Yelp
I have to say the owner of Munchies is a gentleman very kind and very helpful We bought 20 balloons, combination of mylar balloons and latex balloons v Beautiful centerpieces using these balloons!! Also Munchies has the best chocolate dipped bananas!!... Thank you
google avatar

Matty F.

Yelp
This place has more candy in one place than anywhere I've ever been to. Maybe more candy than any place has a right to. I don't know what kinds of laws there are on how much delicious candy one single establishment can have. All I need to know is that Munchies is a candy paradise and NOT ONLY THAT but they have ICE CREAM AND FROZEN YOGURT TOO :-O  :-O  :-O Their cookie dough ice cream was the best we've ever had, no exaggeration - the textures of both the ice cream and of the cookie dough bits where phenomenal. 10/10, would candy again.

Yelp
Thank you for making my daughter's Bat Mitzvah Candy Bar into the magical electric rainbow and for taking my jars and dishes and carefully and graciously filling and shrink wrapping each and every one. When I picked up my candy it was 'ready to go' and perfect and all Kosher. I am so grateful to Munchies for making my daughter's Bat Mitzvah Celebration so special. The children and adults all loved it! Karen G.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing!! The service was so kind, they had a really great selection of sweets, and their ice cream was delightful!! So excited to come back soon :D

Yelp
One star and I'm being generous here! I went there couple of months ago, 9 month pregnant, bought this disgusting yogurt ice cream, I come to pay and they said with credit card you have to buy $7 or more, I ended up buying overpriced Popsicles I don't need and paid, after I paid I asked for a bag because it was frozen and the guy said 10cents, I said I don't have 10 cents! I just bought something I don't need just because I had only my credit card, the owner actually refused! And said you have to buy one! I told him that as a Jewish man it's a big sin to upset a pregnant woman, he didn't care... I went out to my husband super upset and the owner came after me, instead of apologizing he came to tell me I'm rude to talk to him like that... I was shocked, never went there again!
google avatar

Snow W.

Yelp
Sweeet! Literally. When you're in charge of someone else's kids... Here's a great place to drop by & let 'em go at it! O_o Colorful candies galore! Extensive collections of chocolate, dried fruits, nuts, and wine... Did I mention CANDIES?! "from nostalgic to new... from minty to sour... from tiny to giant-sized... from chunky to liquid... from gourmet to booger gummy... We've got it all!" All items sold by weight or in bulk. The kiddies had a blast here! I'm sure their parents will thank me later... *still waiting* :-)

Yelp
I'm going to preface this review with a small Jenn Factoid: I'm really not a huge stoner. I USED to be, but ever since I started to grow up (aka had my ass beat in a back alley when trying to score a dime bag), I've curbed my recreational cannabis use. That being said: Picture this... It's a Thursday nights around 9:30pm. Myself and my ex get ridiculously blazed. We get hungry. Due to the amount of THC pulsing through our bloodstreams, we can't for the life of us decide where to eat. Me: Let's do the food cruise. Ex: Huh? Me: You know...just get in the car and stop when we see somewhere good. Ex: Or maybe, like, 3 places? Me: Yeah. Sure. Whatever. We take off down Pico Blvd. Shortly after Robertson, we see a small, glowing storefront with a large neon sign reading "Munchies". We both start laughing hysterically. I mean, come on? Is this a joke? We decide we have to check it out. As we're walking up to the entrance (did I mention we were high as hell?), the first thing we notice is the little group of Orthodox Jews sitting outside. Then we walk in side, and WOW...the place is filled to the brim with TONS of candy and TONS of Orthodox Jews. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a full-blooded Jew, but when I left Munchies I not only took with me the guilt from rotting my teeth, but the guilt from being stoned around a large gathering of my pious elders. Damn. Seriously, though, Munchies kicks ass. They had to know what they were getting themselves into when the stocked it with thousands of different types of junk food. La Chayim!
google avatar

EaZy P.

Yelp
If your in the area stop by for some great variety of candy for a reasonable price! There's also options for ice cream to satisfy your cravings. Always great service and open late thanks Steve!! Thanks for keeping the kids happy and adults :)

Yelp
Munchies made me SO happy this weekend. After a visit to the kosher taco cart (my first, and definitely not last), I stopped by Munchies down the street to finish the meal with sweets. I had never been before. Wow, there is a GIANT wall of candy bins priced by the pound. Displays in the center have gift baskets and variety packs wrapped in plastic or cellophane. Lots of the candy is imported, which is always fun because it's stuff you don't see elsewhere, and it's stuff in other languages! And I figure, as long as it's got chocolate in it, I don't care if I can't read the packaging!! Besides candy, they also have ice cream and frozen yogurt. AND, there are some great non-dairy options. I went straight to this section and got non-dairy mint chip with colored sprinkles, which hit the spot. My pal got non-dairy cookies and cream, also yummy. So for all you kosher-keepers, if you are coming straight from the meaty taco cart and wanting ice cream, you can have it at Munchies. They'll even sell you larger containers of ice cream and scoop it for you right then. Don't know the cost of the larger containers, but for the two ice creams and sprinkles we got, we paid $6 total. The place is never empty, especially on a Saturday night when the sun goes down. No, not because it's a date spot, but because Shabbat is over and the "kids" come out to play. There are a couple of tables, some inside, some outside, for if you really can't wait to eat your selections at home. I will be back there soon, maybe this week, because all I ordered so far was ice cream, and there are a LOT of bins still to get through!! Ok, I have yet to get through any of them! Oy vey!!

Yelp
I don't have an extensive review for this place but i wanted to share a brief story. This place is cash only but I sadly showed up with just credit cards. I was in a terrible mood and was walking to just to walk. I got two dollars worth of (delicious and i think home made) candy. I was angrily throwing sweets into bags and muttering to my self. I showed up at the counter and the very sweet old man informed me of the cash policy. I shrugged my shoulders and put the candy back on the counter, preparing to walk way and now even more mad that I got embarrassed. Maybe he knew I was having a bad day, maybe he just knew it was something i needed, maybe he just really was so nice - but he called out to me "hey, why don't you just take this one and pay me back later." Free candy in hand, i walked out the door. I was smiling. If it comes down to this candy shop and another, please choose this place. Good karma like that deserves to be rewarded.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Ohhh weeeeeii! I died and went to candy friggin heaven! All types of sweets and treats you can imagine. If you like candy, this Munchies would kick Sweet Factory and those other mall candy store's ass! Factor in chocolate, baked goodies, ice cream, and other snacks this place might kill a diabetic! $7 min to use a debit/credit card though. Really? I have to buy 7 damn dollars worth of candy in order to use my debit card? This and the escalated prices was my only turn-off about this store. I certainly don't need THAT much candy in my life! But if you're buying in bulk for an event or large group, sure why not.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
The candy is great and I LOVE candy shops. That being said, if you are not Jewish some of the candy may taste off, the gummy bears are not made with real gelatin, so they taste different (maybe you like them, maybe not, they are vegan I guess, but some people may be thrown off by it). The Ice Cream picks are also a little small for my liking (especially with the amount of those shops that are not open) but it is kosher, so again the selection is not as high as some other places, but they still do a great job. For example, they have a ton of different chocolate bars, even some that you can't find in normal candy store, Israeli candy (try nougat one!!) but they do not have some because of the Kosher issue.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
What is all the hype about? I went in on a weekend morning around 11am and the store was closed? No sign so I was not sure why. Went back during the week and was not blown away by the selection. Sure they had a lot of bins, but plenty were empty, had stale candy or just didnt fit what I was looking for. I understand thats subjective, but Yelp is about being subjective. Anyway, $7 min for CC applies so bring cash or buy a lot of candy. Oh and I wish they had a bigger selection of sour belt favors.
google avatar

Miriam B.

Yelp
The store has the Kosher candy for everyone in your family. I am a chocolate kind of girl so they have what I am looking for. My kids are really into gummies so they like the gummy bears. We also got some of their gift baskets during the holidays. Also, I need to try some of their ice cream the next time I am there.
google avatar

Isaac M.

Yelp
I have been going to munchies for over a decade . I have always had AMAZING service. The owner , Yehuda , is truly accommodating. Munchies is a family friendly place and my kids are constantly asking to go back. Yehuda and his own family give the place a homey, welcoming feel and always greet everyone with a smile. They are always willing to help and go the extra mile for their customers.
google avatar

Asher B.

Yelp
O.K. this is a complicated review. The good is that they have the best milk shakes here that I have ever had. I order the malted strawberry or chocolate. It is GOOD. If the owners were smart, they would market this place as the best place to get natural, kosher and greatest tasting shakes in Los Angeles. The bad, the place has only street parking and it is always busy in that area. Someone should tell the owner to clean the floors. They have the dirtiest floors I have ever seen. Do something please. Either clean them, or if the material is uncleanable, get clean looking floors. It ruins the ambiance to look at filthy floors. They have a great selection of candy. I also wish the owners would keep the kids from sticking their hands in the candy bins. A simple sign to the parents might help.
google avatar

M A.

Yelp
I brought a group of 40 kids they love their experience very well organized great selection.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
It is not a good thing that I can walk here from my place. Especilly since it is not that far of a walk. They have every sweet and salty treat one can imagine. Not to mention a good selection of Kosher wines. Come ere on a Sunday and see the crowds all waiting their turn for the delicious ice cream.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
They have the same nutty smell and deep cocoa notes. The flavor of the Promises doesn't disappoint. The chocolate is soft to bite, quick to melt and has a very dense, brownie batter flavor to it. There are a lot of toasted and woodsy notes to the chocolate and a light sort of chalky dryness towards the end, even though it's exceptionally fatty. The cookie bits are interesting, they remind me of the sort of Oreo-like bits found in the Cookies & Cream type chocolate confections. It's a little sandy, very crunchy but less cereal-like than a corn flake bit or crisped rice. The addition of the texture is successful. It's just the sort of boost these needed to make me eat them one after another. It would be ideal if they actually were gluten free, since celiacs have been denied the wonders of cookies and cream for far too long.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
I work with a lot of students who are ultra-orthodox, and this is the only place I go to buy prizes and treats for them. The owner is very friendly and helpful. They have an amazing assortment of kosher candy, and boxed chocolates. They also carry kosher wine, I noticed the other day, and for the first time I noticed the ice cream - like I've said before I can be very unobservant. Just went the other day to get some Hanukah candy for my students, and they loved it!!
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
This is a great little specialty store, specializing in kosher and Israeli candy. It's clean, and the service is pretty good. Israeli chocolates and candies are absolutely delicious, and this place has a wide variety to try. In fact, I can't think of any business that has such a large selection of kosher and Israeli candies in Los Angeles. My recommendation is to try to various Israeli candy bars on the west side wall of this place. The one draw back is that they don't take credit card for purchases less than $5.00. But that's ok. The chocolates they sell by the pound are so-so. Stick to the Israeli wrapped chocolates!
google avatar

Yosef R.

Yelp
For a "sweet tooth" Munchies provides enough sweets to satisfy any sweet tooth. Anything from chocolates, different candies, ice cream, cold drinks. Both kosher dairy and parve in huge selections... especially their chocolate balls selection of different flavors which is sold by weight. Cute collection of animal shaped candy for more artistic than flavor choices. The nearby school will have mini-field trips to Munchies which amuse both children and adults. Some seating area for those who want to eat their deserts slowly after a good meal and enjoy the atmosphere that is very pleasing to any customer coming into Munchies or just passing by.

Yaakov Z.

Yelp
Horrible place to go for a number of reasons manly because it has horrible customer service gets upset very easily and won't serve you. If you want ice cream Or candy players they are many other and better places that will make you feel comfortable and happy going their.Dont go to munchies.

Yelp
When we come to town, this place is the after dinner (or before dinner) treat we love to visit! They have a very wide selection of cany as well as ice cream, cakes, shakes, and even wine (look towards the back)! What I really love is on the rare occasion (usually in the fall) when they have caramel apples. These are super yum and very hard to find kosher as it is so it's a super nice treat when they make them! They have both cholov yisroel and cholov stam products (in addition to the parve stuff), so keep that in mind when looking for things depending on your situation. It is a little dirty in there, but so's the entire neighborhood -- so is the entire city, really. YECH! LA is gross in general (sorry, Angelenos). The reason why I knock off one star is sometimes in the candy that you can buy by the pound, the sour belts aren't always as fresh or as sour as they could be. Being the serious sour candy connoisseur that I am, I find this to be rather an important note. All in all, the prices are pretty reasonable and it's rare to see a candy store like this outside of Israel so everyone should for sure check it out!
google avatar

Meg S.

Yelp
Walking into Munchies made me feel like a - wait for it - kid in a candy store! (What? I never promised it was worth waiting for.) Great selection of all sorts of yummy and fun candies, and the prices are actually pretty darn reasonable. It's a cool candy store by any standards, but it's got that something extra for those of us who happen to be vegan and/or keep kosher. Ask any vegan and they will tell you just how difficult it is to find a good selection of candy that they can eat. Now, obviously candy isn't something I eat every day (or is it?), but when I was "a little of everything", Munchies is my go-to location.

Yelp
Fabulous place with very friendly staff. The store was clean. The food and ice cream was super yummy.

Yelp
Service sucks, I waited online for 20 minutes, then I told them to have better service and they got all mad and scream at me

Yelp
We went after dinner to get some treats with our daughter and was surprised by the behavior of the owner. When my daughter handed him her bag of selected candy it was placed on the scale which we expected but the owner kept his finger on the edge and proceeded pushed down onto the scale bringing the weight to a bigger amount. He did not remove his finger until he removed the bag. He thought we didn't see him doing it but I am fairly tall and could see over onto his side, and we were just stunned at what we witnessed. Her bag didn't ultimately cost all that much but we thought his cheating and criminal behavior was disgusting. We spoke with our daughter about his dishonesty and how people like that should be reported and his business be banned. We understand now from local neighborhood kids that this action is common with him. Many avoid shopping there as a result which is why the candy tends to look old. I now buy Kosher candy from the Candy Warehouse online because of this owners cheating habits. We will never be back and he should be ashamed.

Best candy store in La. Hands down. They have everything and for a good price. Check it out and stop by. Very impressed by the nice staff.

Yelp
Very good selection of just about every sweet treat you can think of. There is candy, ice cream, cotton candy, cookies, cakes, drinks toys etc. If you are not doing the sugar thing they do offer some limited sugar free items; ask for them so the staff can help you find them and identify which items are truly sugar free. They are closed Saturdays but I think they do open at the nigh time hours until late. The parking is not so good. You will have to fight for street parking which is not always available. The place is moderately clean and pretty well kept but I think they can make a little better effort in the house tightyness department.
