Must-Try Dishes in Tokyo, According to MICHELIN Guide Inspectors

"Yoshihisa Akiyama strives for cuisine that gives voice to the individuality of his food producers. What fires his ambition are vegetables. He visits farmers across Japan, breathing in the mood of field and farm to inspire his ideas. O-hitashi (a boiled vegetable side dish) draws a portrait of the season; dishes like nikogori (jellied broth of meat or fish) unite the strengths of each ingredient. To watch him in action, ask to be seated at the 6th floor open kitchen; for a quiet ambience, request a table on the 7th floor." - Michelin Inspector

The place is elegant, the staff perfect in their service. Of course, the food is the main star. Sitting where we were, seeing the chef and his assistants at work, was marvellous. Mutsukari’s staff also took time to explain to us what everything was, and the food links with Japanese traditions. Recommended.

2 weeks in Japan and this was hands down the best meal we had. On top of the food, and service was amazing and you really felt like a guest of honor in the chefs home. Get in now before the one Michelin star turns into 2 or 3.

A quiet, intimate, restaurant where we enjoyed our last dinner in Japan. We loved how small the restaurant was and how attentive the staff was to keeping our drinks filled and our table neat. Sitting at the counter was a great experience, seeing the staff working together to build each customer's dishes. The food was beautifully plated with interesting textures and flavor combinations.

Google
A restaurant with great ambience, food and service. With a spectacular open kitchen which allows you to see each of your dishes being prepared in front of you, it is definitely a feast for your eyes. They craft their menus based on the season so you can be assured that you are in for a treat of the seasons finest. If you are looking for a kaiseki in Ginza area, look no further. They even have private rooms where you can have a private chef just you and your guests seperate from everyone else.

A fantastic experience of authentic Japanese food and culture. Truly wonderful! The bonus was that they cater for vegetarians as well which is not an easy find in Japan.

Yelp
9 dishes and not one was a standout. We especially had issues with: Sushi: the squid had no flavor and desperately needed a touch of salt. Yakimono: fried whole fish (head and tail intact) was not a dish for everyone so why serve it? The guest next to me also found it difficult to eat and enjoy. Niku: Fried cake of minced beef was essentially a meatball but what we found disconcerting was the addition of cinnamon and cardamom (which are non-traditional Japanese spices) which detracted from the whole kaiseki experience. Dessert: coffee jelly. So bitter that we couldn't finish even a spoonful. The good news though was service was a 5 star. The sommelier went the extra mile to write out our sake tastings and even drew a label for us. As we left, Akiyamasan (head chef) thanked us at the elevator- a very nice touch!

Yelp
My friend that lives in Japan said I HAVE TO check this place out, so I landed upon this place. They had the perfect vegetable course meal. Everything, literally, everything that was served was delicious. It's the type of dining where a small amount of food comes out one after another. A total of 11 dishes were served. They operate an open kitchen which is immaculate. -Persimmon, apple dressed TOFU with rice wafer, thick turnip soup -Deep fried taro, simmered chestnut and gingko nut. -Sesame pudding with WASABI -Soup with gensuke radish, YUBA -Varieties of Amuse-Bouches -Tomatoes, fried TOFU, Chinese cabbage -Dried guard shavings -Seasonal vegetables aspic -12 kids of Seasonal Vegetables -Rice with MATSUTAKE muchroom, vegetable thick soup, home-made pickles -La Frane sorbet, NISAI-KINTON I seriously thought that my meal would be at least $200 per person, but our meal was about 27,000 yen which is like $250 for two! (We didn't have alcoholic drinks.) This is now on my list of places I MUST GO TO during my trips to Tokyo. Oh, and no picture taking/video of the inside and kitchen. The chef said no. But you can take pictures/video of your food.

Yelp
Marvelous vegetarian course meal. There's also a non vegetarian option. The food is expertly crafted and beautifully presented. There were about 11 courses in our meal. They printed out an English menu for me which was greatly appreciated. The Japanese menu is personalized with the reservation name. They give you the chopsticks you use throughout the meal to take home with you. That was a surprise! Sitting at the chef's table was a worthwhile experience. The front kitchen, aka the kitchen for show, was immaculate, efficient and entertaining. I'm so full right now that I'm actually having a hard time thinking straight and writing this as I fight off the urge to drift asleep. Enjoy the pictures.
