The Best Cambodian Restaurants In Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Drive to the Northeast, head to the Rising Sun Plaza Shopping Center, walk inside Hong Kong Supermarket, and make a right at the stack of plums. Welcome—you’ve found Nam Veng. Although the menu is lengthy, it’s easy to hone in on a few things that the regulars depend on—roommates share a big plate of caramelized, sweetly glazed chicken skewers and families are laser focused on brothier soups, like the mi ga with egg noodles and chunks of chicken. With each spoonful, you’ll find a new flavor: a hint of ginger here, a pop of onion there, and fish sauce all around. Service is so-so, but you’re not here to be wined and dined. Enjoy the delicious, straightforward dishes, and grab a few melons on the way out." - candis mclean

Where to Eat Cambodian Food in Philly | Eater Philly

"Nam Vang, which is the Vietnamese translation of the capital city of Phnom Penh, serves epic mee katang seafood noodles that Sarun Chan of the Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia (CAGP) says perfectly “marries together Khmer and Chinese flavors for a Southeast Asian twang to a classic Chinese dish [that] has warm and smoky flavors.” He adds that “the gravy is rich and tangy from the bamboos and the smoke from the wok lifts its flavor profile to another level.” Jennie Nam, the treasurer of the Southeast Asian Market Vendors Association at FDR Park, goes for the katieu Phnom Penh." - Diana Lu

Google
Great food, the Nam Vang noodles were amazing. The soup base here is always on par. Just what I've been craving! One of the best phos in Philly, hands down. I highly recommend a try to anyone.

Google
Absolutely delicious! I got the char grilled shrimp and pork on vermicelli. However, the price on their website is NOT what you will pay. I ended up paying about $5 more. They need to update their prices.

Luis Alvarado

Google
Loved it! The server was a bit rude.. but I think it was just her not speaking any English..she came around at the end. I will definitely be going back.

Chanthoeun Soeum

Google
Small family run business with great authentic Southeast Asian food. Everything tastes homemade!

Google
The pricing is made up and not according to there menu. I reported them to be investigated to the FTC. Federal Trade Commission. They are committing consumer fraud and noy complying with the FTC regulations. They are going to be investigated for this. It horrible to charge the consumers what they feel they want. All people reading this please report them to the FTC if you want to be charged fair prices and not be scammed.

Google
Food, awesome. But service ok could have been better. Evertime I go there, they seem to always forget one item. And as far as price goes, it seem they make up their own prices.

Google
Omg !! I just ordered a Chicken Pho during my lunch break today and this Pho has to be the best one I have ever tried. At first when I smelled the broth alone I wasn't impressed once I tasted it was a game changer. And definitely once I put the noodles, chicken, and fried garlic and a little bit of Sriracha sauce in the broth I was in love !! For me this has to be the #1 Pho spot I've been to. I'm soo glad I gave them a try !! ❤😋

Yelp
Conveniently located inside the supermarket. Somewhat of a hidden gem since I was not expecting the soups to be this good. Ordered the #12 and it was fantastic. The broth was full of flavors. Noodles were cooked perfectly. I didn't care for some of the (I believe) livers but did enjoy the beef and the shrimps (you get only two). If you do order the number #12 I suggest ordering a side of fried dough to dip and eat with the soup. Service was okay, even though the lady (she's been mentioned her before) got the incorrect order. No biggie though as they brought out the correct dish. Only reason complaint is that the tea cup that they gave me was dirty (had bits of dried up tea leaves inside the cup), but as some say, the dirtier the place the more flavors/know it's gonna be good. Overall ambiance was nothing special. It looks like your typical pho spot. Great food though, would recommend based on that.

Yelp
My first review in which I complained that I couldn't get bun bo hue anymore failed to express that in fact Nam Vang does turn out some absolutely delicious soups and noodle bowls, and the banh mi are great too.

Yelp
I used to love coming here during my days off of work with my daughters. I would usually order the Egg Noodle Nam Vang (which is all pork) and my girls usually order the dried seafood egg noodle with soup on the side. It's a hole in the wall establishment but the food are usually delicious so i can brush it aside. Recently, I went there with my daughter for lunch. I ordered my usual. The server, an older women with a mean looking face, usually greets me. This time, she was very unpleasant and unprofessional. I told her what I wanted and she said to me, "No, you get the seafood one. If not, all you'll get is the pork." I told her I wanted the pork but she insisted I wanted otherwise. After we got our food, I told her our order was wrong. She even argued with me into saying that's what I ordered and gave me a "Thank you!" I just switched the toppings with my daughter to avoid confrontation. I was not happy with the service and her attitude. Will not return.

Yelp
The price ways too high and they not honestly the price like I bought vermicelli the price on menu 13.95 but when I pay they change 19.65

Yelp
A wonderful family own restaurant that is right inside of the supermarket. This restaurant has been a local staple for over 20 years. They specialize in local Penang dishes. Their most know for their Hu Tieu Nam Vam. The dish was flavorful with pork, shrimp, squid, liver, and kidney all of which are thinly sliced. The dish is served with fry with sauce or wet with a broth.
google avatar

Yelp
The only thing I order from here is the congee with fried bread. It's a go to item if you're sick or hungover. Comfort food. The service here is mostly horrendous and I usually would skip this place if Cafe Saigon down the street is open. That's the reason I'm only giving this place 3 stars. Service could be much better. Plus side... there's plenty of parking and it's located within an asian market so if you wanna get some groceries then it's a one stop shop.
google avatar

Sidney M.

Yelp
If you love noodle soup this place is a must try. Portions of the food or excellent. The broth is very flavorful. It's a great place to have a quick lunch breakfast or dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
Vietnamese food, traditional and always good. Noodle soups are my favorite. Always busy
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Been coming here for 15 years. Hidden in the corner of a run down supermarket, this is a fantastic, authentic Vietnamese restaurant . Highly recommend the broken rice and pork chops or their special Hu Tieu Kho Nam Vang - egg and rice noodle seafood and beef soup; you won't find a better version of this dish anywhere.

Yelp
BEWARE OF "FLEXIBLE" PRICING!!!! It's not a fancy place but seemed authentic, so we gave it a try. The food is fine. Noodles are good. Bahn Mi is tasty BUT they blatantly overcharge! The price on the menu isn't the price they ring up when you go to pay (about 20-30% higher for each of our items). When I realized the math was wrong and returned to the cashier to question the charges, the owner/cashier lady claimed that the prices had changed and then whipped out a laminated menu supposedly with higher prices. I didn't bother to look and wasn't going to make a scene. But that doesn't mean I won't call them out! It's just plain wrong! Even if it's an honest price increase because of inflation and they don't want to reprint the paper menus, then they have an obligation to tell you when they give you the menus that the printed prices are WRONG and are in fact much higher. But is that what really happened here? Or do they simply practice "flexible pricing" - price as you go depending on the customer? What do you think? If you should decide to try out the place, just make sure you confirm the prices before you order. Good luck!

Yelp
Hidden away in a Chinese supermarket, it's a bit hard to find, but no it's pretty good. I ordered the broken rice with crab patty, bbq pork, on broken rice and an iced Vietnamese coffee. Both took a bit longer than expected to come out, even at 3 pm and only 1 other table occupied. I guess they make everything as ordered, so can't fault that. Broken rice dish was okay. Pork was bbq'd well, but too fatty. Everything else was fine, but there was no egg on top. I'm not sure if this has it on the menu, but elsewhere it usually has a pan fried egg. Iced coffee came pre mixed in a styrofoam cup with ice. It was okay, but I usually prefer the places that being the slow drip out for you and you can mix it fresh with ice. All in all, not the greatest, but not bad if you are doing some food shopping and have time to spare.
google avatar

Danielle D.

Yelp
5 stars for ONLY ONE dish, Hu Tieu Mi Kho, any other dishes are ordered at your own risk. That mix of pho noodles and egg noodles help the taste and definitely have the DRY version. They add this dank sauce in the noodles but also serve the broth on the side. Add on some greens, pepper, mix it up (keep broth separate), and you're set! You could go for the regular soupy version because it's still delicious but WHY NOT have the best version when it's available??
google avatar

Yelp
Stop in if you're looking for an inexpensive brunch or lunch. I enjoy much of Nam Vang's menu selection, which is largely Vietnamese. Their fish sauce is more watered down than I'm used to, but their banh mi is decent ($3 for charbroiled pork, $2 for a regular), packaged in an impressive roll, the bread thin and satisfyingly crispy (much better than when I first tried them years ago). The filling is where I gripe since there's not too much cilantro and the pickles are a bit large. They're no Cafe Saigon, but I won't dismiss their sandwiches anymore. The pho broth I've had is tasty and you can't beat their convenient location (next to the Hong Kong Supermarket), ample parking (and seating), and friendly service. FYI, many of the staff speak Chinese and/or Cambodian depending on who you're dealing with - and English too, of course.

Yelp
Love the beef sticks! You must order it! Their cambodian noodle soup is good! Great hidden place next to HK supermarket!

Yelp
I came here on a rainy day and I just wanted some pho to soothe my soul. I ordered golden bags and a beef ball with tripe pho. The golden bags were pretty good to start off as an appetizer. Perfectly crispy and juicy on the inside. I was given a good portion of pho that I was struggling to finish. The noodles were firm and nicely cooked and they only give you about 2-4 pieces of beef balls. The service was nowhere to be seen since I needed refills on water but I just decided to pay before I get any more thirstier. Overall good prices and food.

Yelp
Not vegetarian friendly. I am vegetarian so I frequent Asian restaurants. I saw NOTHING on the menu that was vegetarian. So i ordered vietnamese spring roll- to be sure I specifically asked the lady if what I ordered was veg and she said yes. It was number 10 cha gio. It took 20minutes to arrive. I then bit into it and there was meat in it. I did not want to go back in there so I lost 4$. I have had the same experience with cafe Saigon (827 Adams). But I was able to get a refund. Neither places are vegetarian friendly.

Yelp
Even with the food being good, I can't bring myself to come back with the horrible customer service I continue to receive. Whether you're dining in or out, the service provided is horrendous (unprofessional and RUDE). Everyone is entitled to a bad day, but when you work in customer service you need to try and hold it together. The second time around, we opted for take out, when I read off what I wanted, the lady said something that was not at all what the menu online said, which is fine given that they may have updated their menu. But when I asked a question about the dish (what does special mean) she said it had EVERYTHING - she didn't and wouldn't go into specific, just that it had everything. I then asked her to hold so I can try and tell her what it is the menu online was saying - she hung up the phone. I tried to call back twice giving the benefit of a doubt and they would not answer the phone. This place has been vetoed!
google avatar

Kiu L.

Yelp
Very authentic. I tried their famous Nam Vang dish and it definitely will satisfy your Vietnamese food craving. It's rice noodles with fish sauce and meats and veggies and then you have a bowl of soup on the side - it's kind of like a different take on Pho. Dry pho. And it's delicious! I've never seen it on the menu anywhere else, so I will definitely be coming back here.

Yelp
Location: Hidden inside the Hong Kong Supermarket building. Service: My family and I have been coming here for years so they all know us by face and they all are very nice to us :) Food: Delish!! We always get the seafood soup and sometimes I get the grilled pork chop with rice. Don't skip their bubble drinks, and also try their Vietnamese hoagie. Price: Reasonable. They have not tried to capitalize on the recent popularity of Pho and Ramen noodle amongst Americans and have kept their prices reasonable.

Yelp
There isn't a lot of Cambodian restaurants around the Philly area, which is surprising, considering the number of Cambodians living in this city. What they lack in numbers however, they make up for in quality. Aside from Khmer kitchen and new Phnom Penh in South Philly, Nam Vang restaurant inside the Hong Kong Super Market is another awesome spot for Khmer food. The food here is comforting and affordable. I've been going here for awhile and I know the workers by name. It's always nice to have the staff treat you like family. The food here is also amazing and super cheap. I got their signature Phnom Penh noodles, which comes in two different styles, in a soup or dry with sauce mixed in. I usually get both. I'm not a big organ meat guy so I always tell them no organ meat. Make sure You do so because authentic Phnom Penh noodles come with hearts and liver. The broth is phenomenal, this is drastically different from you Vietnamese pho broth. The broth is more pork based and comes with stir fried ground pork and roasted garlic in oil. It is very aromatic and unique. The dry noodle is just as addicting, their mixed in sauce is just light enough but carry through all the flavors, on top all this, it's like 7 dollars a bowl. Another dish note praising is "hu tieu xao bo", this is the Cambodian version of Lad Na noodles, this comes with the most tender beef around and their flat noodles is pan fried with a crust, topped with really flavorful gravy, you can't lose! All in all, you can spend around 25 dollars here for 2 people and really get an awesome dinner meal that will fill you up.e

Yelp
I've eaten at all of the Vietnamese restaurants in the North Philadelphia area and this is one of the best. They don't have the usual PHO, so don't expect them to have it. They don't have the beautiful ambience as the Vietnamese restaurant in center city on 11th street,, but the food is very good. The service is very good but you should go with someone who speaks Vietnamese or know what to order. Unfortunately the waitress isn't fluent in English. She's nice if you get to know her. I don't speak Vietnamese and I get along with her very well. Try this place, you will not be disappointed with their food.

Anh D.

Yelp
Great food! I always order from here on the phone and when we come, it is ready with fast service. The Hu Tieu Nam Vang is my favorite along with their boba drinks.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem inside the supermarket. Don't let its run down appearance fool you, this place serves one of the most authentic Hu tieu/ Mi Nam Vang. The broth is so on point that I actually feel like I'm in Vietnam. The meats and seafoods are cooked perfectly - literally melts in your mouth and really compliment the dish well. And the best thing is the broth is always scorching hot, even when you're finished eating. On top of all that, the price is super affordable. The parking lot is huge. I can't comment on the other dishes because we've only tried a couple, they're decent. If you're coming here, it's best to just get the Nam Vang soup. Tip: add a bit of red vinegar and order a side of chao quay (Chinese donuts) with it. They make the chao quay really crunchy so dipping it in the flaming broth creates the perfect side dish.
google avatar

Kim M.

Yelp
I love eating here. I always order the #12 and the summer rolls that is always made fresh to order. Great and quick service. It's a hole in the wall. Perfect on a cold, rainy days and cure all of my hangovers.
google avatar

Rose V.

Yelp
Alot of people may not know but it took me 5 experiences to be disgusted and never to turn back again! Okay the food is good, I'm not going to lye, which is why I was going there on the regular, but the 5th time just killed everything I ever thought of that place. My bf and I just got seated and ordered, RIGHT after we ordered I usually get our chop sticks and spoons to clean them with the water or tea they give us. After pulling the chop sticks out I seen a BABY COCKROACH clawing on the tip of the rest of the chopsticks. YES, it was the brown cockroaches that lay tons of babies at a time: those ones! I was ready to leave but my bf said lets just wait for our food and then leave, we ended up getting our food and he ate it but I was terrified. Think about it, if there was a baby cockroach outside in the dining area, than more than likely the mother roach is in the kitchen having all the orgies and babies she possibly can!!! I'm sorry unless they bomb that place, I would never eat there again.
google avatar

Danny K.

Yelp
I think this is the best Cambodian noodle soup, but they think they Vietnamese restaurant. Most Cambodian people go there and support the owner lot. They should this restaurant is Cambodian restaurant. The food is so good and the service is great. Most people working there is came from Cambodia but they most speak in Vietnamese they forgot their roots. It ok one day they realize most Khmer eat there.
google avatar

Kerry A.

Yelp
I am overdue on a review for this place, a long standing favorite for nearly 15 years. I am writing abuut it now after having had its namesake soup at another location, Pho Saigon, on Columbus Blvd. Nothing touches Nam Vang's Hu Thie Nam Vang soup ! They have spoiled me here. Able to aptly compare, I can say this about Nam Vang: - some of the most flavorful broth around - the BEST and most tender rice noodles, hands-down - The Nam Vang soup has an incredible mix of both seafood and pork, both cooked perfectly every time - the best selection of condiments, including the red vinegar which is a must for this soup ! And equally amazing Cafe Su Da ! If you want a real treat, get a side of the fried bread to dunk in the soup ... heaven ! You are indeed my true love, Nam Vang restaurant, for your signature, namesake dish. I shall not leave you for another again !

Yelp
This is my all time favorite place.. I have been going there for the past 12 years and the food is always hands down good.. I walk in and they know what I'm having sometimes I have switch it up but everything they serve is very good.. summer rolls, soup, hogies, broken rice plates etc.. Great service all the time, very clean place and it's right in the super market where you could shop after lunch or dinner.. Takeout is also available. .
google avatar

Nancy I.

Yelp
Honestly, dry noodle is better at Cafe Nhu Quynh near Ben City. But I come here from time to time because the women are so nice and it is cozy. Service is inconsistent, one day they are good, other days they're awful. Not very clean either and it seems like their food quality has dwindled.
google avatar

Lianna N.

Yelp
5 stars for Banh Mi and Sugar Cane drink, and 3 stars for everything else on the menu I have tried!
google avatar

Danan R.

Yelp
This just a review for the beef stew with baguette, pho, and sugarcane juice. I haven't had the banh mi so I can't really speak to that but the pho broth is flavorful and I love the rich, hearty beef stew. Just dip the baguette in and you're good to go! The bun rieu is not as authentic as Nam Phuong's, by far, but it's passable. Overall, a good place to grab a quick, inexpensive bite. The servers are very friendly and the food comes out very quickly.
google avatar

Jessie H.

Yelp
Pho is average, Banh mi is average. Service is kind of slow. It's not that clean in here.
google avatar

Bernardo S.

Yelp
Make this nice and short this is the closes i could fine to nam vang similar to the one located in san jose CA, love this place friendly staff. Let your taste bud explore from spicy soup to simple as lemon grass grilled pork on a stick. Sugar cane is a must nothing compare to unrefined sugar.
google avatar

Jade H.

Yelp
Hu tieu (Cambodian noodle soup) was good, although the broth would be better if it's more flavorful and a tiny bit garlicky. It's the usual family run restaurant, nothing fancy but decent food. Clean bathroom and friendly staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Even though, I've long since moved to the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, I still wander down to my old stomping grounds to get my hair cut. Now that my son is 3, I take him down with me on my monthly trek to get our mullets trimmed. A tasty side effect of this trip is the opportunity to hit up a couple of gastronomically pleasing locations. Nam Vang is one of them. You can count on me getting a few (at least 4) bahn mi sandwiches, charbroiled pork, please and an order of the bun with the spring roll and charbroiled pork. You can't beat the price for the sandwiches ($3/per) and while I can put at least 2 away in a sitting, I must restrain myself and save one for the next day (they hold up pretty well). The roll is crispy, the spread is light and seems to be there just to add a bit of moisture to the roll. Jalapenos and the rest of the vegetables round out one of the best deals in sandwiches around. If we end up getting pho as well, we make the trip a little bit more up the road to Pho75 but for anything else, this is where we stop. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Chy J.

Yelp
I love the food here however customer service not too much. There is this one waitress, older lady with short black hair pass her ears who is rude, unpleasant and uninviting. who is like this to everyone. This restaurant is going to loose a lot of business but of that attitude. I took a few friends there who aren't Asians ( i kind of brush it off bc i'm use to the Asian customer service lol) but my friends aren't returning. Its a shame because this place is authentic as it gets. Hopefully they will read this and fix the problem.
google avatar

Alice T.

Yelp
The viet hoagie taste here taste good and pretty affordable . But I also order the avocado smoothie with pearls and it cost $5 And not to mention the cup was so small too
google avatar

Tuan N.

Yelp
if ur going home from work, have nothing home to eat, hungry for vietnamese cuisine, then stop by and grab rice vermicelli with pork chops, egg rolls, and charcoaled shrimp over vegetables. but today I came from dim sum and stopped over for a dessert. their che ba mau (rainbow drink). coconut milk with mung beans, red beans, and grass jelly mixed in crushed ice. a nice and sweet ending for any good lunch. only complaint is that they put in peanuts. this didn't kill the experience, it's just not normal for them to do so
google avatar

Peter L.

Yelp
Great place for Cambodian/Vietnamese Noodles. I really enjoyed the dry noodles with fried dough on the side, but I wish they were a little more generous on the meat. Fried dough is a must if you're ordering noodles at this place. Just dip that in your soup and it's heaven in your mouth. Prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Tue T.

Yelp
Great place to eat. Good services. Affordable. Problem? Their cambodian noodle with the broth on the side (hu tieu nam vang kho) is probably what I like most. On top of that, they have sugar cane drinks! No other or not many other places have this drink!
google avatar

Remey M.

Yelp
I use to like them, but now service sucks, employees are rude. Place isn't clean.. I doubt if I go back. Smh ..

Ken M.

Yelp
OK English is a problem for some of the servers and spartan interior. Food is very reasonably priced and quite good. I have been 4-5 over years. Tonight was Bahn Mi (hoagie) crisp and soft banquette, tasty pate, nice blend of meats and vegetables. Crab noodle soup (#58 I think), delicious crab craws in an "udon" like noodle soup. Broth was tasty but more viscosity then a pho. Re: servers - The "son" and I discussed the various dishes I was interested in. Other times a adult woman was less helpful. It is a mom and pop restaurant where the owners are immigrants. The standard is different then a Garces restaurant where the expectations of the owner and patrons are higher.
google avatar

Kathy O.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to eat. Their grilled chicken rice platter is one of the best I've had. My husband likes their grilled pork chops which are good also. I also like their Bo Kho (beef stew with rice noodle). I love it with the big rice noodle and a lot of places don't have it for this noodle soup dish. The Nam Vang noodle (dry) is great also. The sauce and the broth that comes with this dish is very tasty.
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
The stars are for one thing... Phnom Penh egg noodle dry. This is the only place to go when craving authentic phnom penh noodle. The flavors are perfect. It's the only place my family goes. I haven't found a place in Philly that can match them. Add a couple fried dough for dipping in the broth and a glass of Vietnamese ice coffee and you're set!

Brendon K.

Yelp
I am a regular here and I love it! The service isn't great, but its not horrible either. They just take your order and leave you alone. Many mistaken their noodles for pho, but it is really called Phnom Penh noodles. I order the same thing everytime with a different flavor of bubble tea. They also have other good foods, such as fried rice, fried noodles, rice dishes, and beef skewers. Prices are average.
