Napier Quarter - Review - Fitzroy - Melbourne - The Infatuation

"For a crash course in Melburnian dining, head to this cafe-slash-wine bar on a residential backstreet, where the kitchen applies a light but thoughtful touch to top-notch produce. That might mean yellow peaches dressed with honey, or ricotta and persimmon lifted with native pepperberry. The anchovy toast here kicked off a city-wide obsession, and nails the fat-salt-acid equilibrium: anchovies over thick house mayo and salsa verde with a sliced boiled egg on rye. It’s not always on the menu, but ask nicely and one can often be whipped up. Wines are from small-batch producers, best sipped outside in the sunshine, and a die-hard approach to coffee means there’s no alt milk and no takeaway (though espresso is a wallet-friendly $2 if you take it standing at the bar). Lingering is welcome—the venue is open all day, and you can even stay the night at the on-site guesthouse." - Ellen Fraser

The 33 Best Restaurants In Melbourne 2023

"For an introduction to what eating in this city is all about, head to Napier Quarter, a cafe-slash-wine-bar in a Fitzroy backstreet. Produce is prepared with a light but thoughtful touch, which by day might mean a plate of yellow peaches dressed with honey, or heirloom tomatoes with wild sorrel (by night there are natural wines and more substantial dishes). The Anchovy Toast is a cult favorite: Olasagasti anchovies, thick house mayo, salsa verde, and a sliced boiled egg served on rye. Lingering is encouraged—there’s no coffee to go, and there’s even an on-site guesthouse." - ellen fraser

The 38 Essential Melbourne Restaurants

"Napier Quarter is the kind of place that will have you considering a move to the buzzy Fitzroy area. The tiny neighborhood gem transforms from an espresso bar in the morning to a wine bar in the afternoon. To match the European and Australian wine list, chef Eileen Horsnell creates inspired dishes with carefully selected local ingredients like pine mushrooms and Great Ocean Road duck. The rye toast with Spanish anchovies, boiled egg, mayo, and salsa verde has a legion of fans." - Audrey Bourget, Sharlee Gibb

We had focaccia, anchovies on toast, pasta and soup. They all tasted lovely and the most memorable one was the focaccia. It is hard to find words to describe how tasty it was. I wish I could bring a loaf with me. The service was great on the day we were there. We would definitely go there again.

The restaurant is popular but I prefer swinging by late arvo before dinner, no bookings needed!! Always order an anchovy toast—must of been the most exquisite toast experience and the focaccia was on point!! Will be back for more xx

📍 Napier Quarter, Fitzroy - 3.6 ⭐️ out of 5. A beautiful wine bar tucked away in a street of Fitzroy that I have been keen to try for a little while. I love the beautiful umbrellas outside, and sitting in the cosy inside area was also beautiful, I do think the outside is nicer though. Pictured is the: ➖ Focaccia ➖Zucchini with goats curd, lovage and pepita ➖Charcuterie plate The focaccia is the absolute standard out for me and I would come back just for that. It is light and fluffy and has a crispy top that is distinct from other places I’ve been as it is black. It is also oily which I think brings extra flavour, it was not excessively oily at all. The meats on the charcuterie plate were great quality, I particularly loved the salami. The zucchini didn’t wow me too much and I think would be really hard to eat without focaccia. We enjoyed a beautiful chilled red on a warm afternoon here, but there is plenty of wine to choose from which I love. You are paying for premium quality here, I think we paid about $50-60 each for a meal that was yum but not particularly filling. Overall 3.6 ⭐️ out of 5.

I love this place. Elegant, beautiful & great selection of wine. Their cardamom cream Paris-Brest (cf. picture) is delicious! Just be aware that they don’t have plant-based milk for cappuccinos & lattes.

It was a delicious lunch! The focaccia was wow!! So sad I didn’t get to takeaway. Such a tiny place but food was so good! Service took a bit of time but in the end we were satisfied. The pasta was a surprise! So much flavours🤩 And I personally really enjoyed the citron presse! I know my friend was hesitant on the espresso + tonic at first but once she tried it there was no looking back!

I think this is one of the best hidden gem in Melbourne. It's located on this serene corner between two crowded main streets. Love their lovely wine selections and their own simple but excellent dishes. I can't tell I tasted all but most of them were 'you should definitely try' dishes. It's such a charming and ecellent place.

Google
effortlessly chic and elegant breakfast spot. The staff here are kind and friendly, making sure to look after all our needs. I really really love the coffee here - and the food is just what you want from a wine bar at 9am. Can’t get this anywhere else. Napier is a forever fave.

Super arrogant. Would not recommend. Didn’t even get to place an order before realizing this is not the place when there are so many other great options in the immediate area. The “only dairy” stance is wild. Even St David Dairy’s cafe have plant based options!

Yelp
I loved everything about this cafe, and the servers were fantastic, knowledgeable, and oh so helpful. I came for a quick bite of breakfast but ended up staying for lunch because I enjoyed the anchovy toast so much. (By the way, it was the best gluten free bread I've ever had.) The celeriac was delicious as well. I sat outside and was able to enjoy the nice weather while also getting a feel for the neighborhood around me. Dan and Connor gave me lots of excellent recommendations as well for my stay in Melbourne. I absolutely recommend grabbing a bite and coffee here!
