Nephew Ristorante Will Resurrect Classic Dishes From Tony Angello’s | Eater New Orleans

"Opening this March in Metairie, Frank Catalanotto — Tony Angello’s nephew and former executive chef who began working for his uncle in 1972 — is reviving many favorites from Tony Angello’s menu, including eggplant Tina, crab gravy, cannelloni, lobster cup, and stuffed shrimp; he’s also making several of the specials he ran at Tony Angello’s permanent menu items and bringing back the beloved “feed me” option of continuous small plates." - Stephanie Carter

We had dinner at Nephew’s Restaurant with two other couples. The experience was really great, from start to finish. We were very politely greeted by the valet upon arrival. The waiter was super friendly, brought our drinks, explained all the specials and promptly served our food. The food was excellent and the portions were huge. This is a great spot to eat and we will return.

We’ve been making the drive from the north shore to Nephew’s as long as they’ve been open. The recipes are authentic Italian and incredibly delicious. The service is personal and perfect. And we always find ourselves talking our meal for days after the fact. Don’t pass up this local favorite.

Google
The Seafood Cup and the Veal Parmesan and Pasta were excellent, as well as the little Italian Breads! We have been eating at Nephews since it opened and this was the first time that we received such poor service. Our reservation was for 6:45 pm and we were seated immediately upon arrival. However, once seated it actually took 30 minutes to get our drinks, and another 20 minutes to order our appetizers. Twenty five minutes later we actually had to call the waiter over to our table to take our dinner order. I could have understood the delay if the restaurant was busy, however, that wasn’t the case. There were only three other tables seated. It was disappointing that the service was so poor b/c their food is delicious!

Google
We were WOWed by this dining experience. Let me start by saying that the gentleman who waited on us was fantastic and made the experience extra special. He even sang to us in Italian. The dinner was probably the best Italian food Ive had in New Orleans. I ordered a special that was steak tips and a side of the red sauce pasta, so I did not have to give up the red sauce. It was tender and pink in the middle and one of the best things I have eaten. My friend got the veal with peppers and mushrooms also fantastic. (I tasted it to be sure) We also got a fried eggplant medalion with I forget what kind of seafood sauce. We could have licked the plate. It was not crowded. Really nice inside. There is a long bar. Plenty of seating. If you arent eating here, you are missing out. Good date spot, but there were families eating there. For dessert, cannolis with a cinnamon chocolate filling made there, coconut gelato, and a small cheese cake with cappucinos. A+

Google
I've been here two times, both with parties of 10 and reservations. We made them for an early time and were seated promptly both times. The food is overall good but the eggplant dishes are very good and worth a trip by themselves. The place does fill up fast and both times I heard people calling for a table and it was either at 11pm or not tonight. If you do feed me be prepared to eat for over 2 hours.

Google
Very nice and comfortable dining room. Waiter was very personable and the entire staff was very friendly. Many specials were available and were described perfectly by the waiter. Everything we ordered was prepped perfectly and delicious. The only complaint is the entire meal took a long time; drinks, appetizers, main course for two took almost two hours. Other than that it was a very enjoyable dining experience

Ryan Y.

Google
The seafood cup and Mama's eggplant are wonderful, even though it was half parsley.

Google
Don’t go with more than a party of 4! We had a party of 8 and our reservations for 7:30, were seated at 8:45 and got water at 9:00 and bread at 9:15. We were never offered a menu since (I believe) the waiters were pushing the “feed me”. The noise level was so high we couldn’t hear anyone at our table to have a nice conversation. We ordered crab claws to hold us over till the regular food was served: they were very good! All other food was passable but in my opinion not worth the price or the wait. We left at 11:10 pm.

Yelp
This is one of our all time favorite, authentic Italian restaurants. Everything on the menu is fantastic. The service is top notch. I can't rave about them enough!
google avatar

Yelp
Nephews has a perfect Italian restaurant combined with eating at a friends house feel. They talk to you when you come in and if you are with a regular customer you visit. There is no rush to order or fast pace like they need to turn over tables vibe here. I love that you can have a two hour meal and they are happy that you are there. So many restaurants are more transactional now a days as are the customers. If you don't want to take your time and enjoy maybe it's not for you but if you do it will be worth it. We had water and sesame seed rolls quickly as the visitors (me) went through the menu. It's one of those menus where you want three different items until they tell you about the specials. The seafood cup is crazy hot right out of the oven. DO NOT touch the bowl it was just in the oven. I cannot even describe it other than to say just get it and thank me later. I had the drum with crab meat which I always get when it's one of the specials. The angel hair pasta with crawfish in cream sauce is delicious. I wanted to save room for desert but I could not do it. I did take home left overs and also ate my bffs chicken parm the next day for lunch. The wine was perfect with our meal and I cannot wait to be in town again. Such good food, laid back atmosphere and service.

Yelp
The food for three at our table came cold and had to be sent back. The food was tasty and good in spite of this. The service was poor. We had to ask for menus and we repeatedly had to ask another waiter for things at our table like bread, refills, straws etc. we even tipped the other waiter for helping us. We go out for dinner regularly and I do not think that we will be returning to this restaurant. They were not full and there was no reason for this shoddy service.

Lanell G.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all cost! They have no idea what customer service means, and food is horrible. Big mistake, and never again.

Debbie L.

Yelp
Very disappointed, the food was mediocre, our reservation was for 5:30pm we finished with dessert at 9:15pm, two people got the feed me, the rest of our party ( people ) ordered off the menu, they kept bringing the feed me food out, we waited until their final course came out before they brought our food, it was cold and over cooked , I'm guessing from sitting there so long. My suggestion is their policy should be the feed me menus should have to be a table thing not individually. And if they choose to do that, then they should give the others the option to get their food quicker

Yelp
One of the worst dining experiences ever. This restaurant is aligning itself with Tony Angelo's Restaurant NOT EVEN CLOSE! The service was so bad, the waiter ask how we enjoyed our dinner and we hadn't received it, it took for ever. The quality of food- terrible, the crabmeat and fish smelled rotted. The "Italian Salad " not even close to an Italian Salad, a spring mix with Italian dressing! Too many very good restaurants in the area to waste your money here. The valet attendant was great!
google avatar

Yelp
I want to give this restaurant no stars. Yelp needs to make that happen for this place. The owner/chef came from Tony Angelo's, which was the old Italian restaurant located in Lakeview. This was my wife, mother-in-law, and their friends take on the restaurant for a birthday/girls night out. BEWARE!!! THEY ARE NOT SOCIAL DISTANCING TABLES AND NOT ALL EMPLOYEES ARE WEARING MASKS!!! They could have social distanced tables that were being seated but chose to put two separate groups right next to each other. Literally bumping chairs while they were seated. First off.. Pulling into the parking lot, half of the lot was blocked off for valet service. Valet service during Covid-19!!!??? REALLY!? You want a total stranger getting into my car to park it literally 15ft from the front door? For what reason? After circling the lot numerous times, we finally found a spot. At no time did the valet guy stop me and offer up one of the coned off spots. When we asked the owner about it, he became very defensive and rude saying all we had to do was ask the guy and he would have moved a cone... umm ok. My brother was a valet and no they don't just move cones for you to park. 2nd- Prepare to be there for at least 3 hours for 3 courses. They move slower than a sloth. When our food finally arrived it was all cold. By now we are full from soup and salad and boxed it up. 3rd- DON'T ASK FOR SEPARATE CHECKS!!! We were 5 women and it took 1 hour to get the check split and even then it wasn't accurate! 4th- BEFORE YOU MODIFY YOUR MEAL ASK WHAT THE UP CHARGE WILL BE!!! I ordered a side of pasta with garlic sauce $10, menu price, I added some shrimp and got the homemade noodles. 5, yes I said 5, noodles came out on my plate with 6 small shrimp and on my bill was charged $22!!!! Don't let the pictures fool you that are posted on here. Those side dishes of pasta are on a plate the size of a bread plate and the veal will be literally, a piece of veal. The seafood cup comes in the size of a 4 oz ramekin and you only get two bites from it. 5th- When I asked for clarification from our waiter he said he did what the owner told him and he didn't know why it was so much... OK then can I speak with him pls? The owner approached our table and said "WHAT NOW!?" Really!??? Is that how you speak with customers?? We were still polite and asked about the up charge not being consistent and he began CURSING US OUT TELLING US TO PAY THE F@=;$ BILL AND GET THE F*"@ OUT OF HIS RESTAURANT! THIS HAPPENED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RESTAURANT IN FRONT OF ALL THE OTHER TABLES. DO NOT BRING YOUR KIDS HERE IF YOU MUST GO AT ALL HORRIBLE FOOD, HORRIBLE SERVICE, HORRIBLE OWNER!!! Save your time and money and go to Vincent's or Fausto's for better at better prices and much better customer service.

Comma2thetop ..

Yelp
The food here is disgusting. The food tastes microwaved. Owner will claim food is fresh but it tastes like a frozen tv dinner. The puny amount of seafood you are served is disguised under a pile of cheese. Beef is served to your table that needs a chainsaw to cut through it is so tough. The kitchen staff should check the beef before serving to customers. The owner yells at people if they do not park his way in a public lot. Total short man syndrome.

Family R.

Yelp
Terrible service. Food portions very small. Everyone at the table got their meal at different times.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Best meatballs and spaghetti! The red sauce is to die for. However, worst beard pudding ever! It has grapes in it and it gross.

Yelp
We went on a Friday night and they were not very busy, so we thought good , we should get food pretty quickly. Well we never got that far. The waiter came and briefly told us of the specials. then he spent about 15 min trying to light our table candle. When he came back we ordered drinks. The bus boy brought our drinks since our waiter was tending to a table that come in after us. He went back and forth to this new table passing us up. We finally had to get the bus boy to get us menus. After being passed by several more times i stopped him and said we have been waiting to order. He got an attitude with us saying "he has tables." Yes he had two and we were the one neglected. no apologies just attitude , so at this point we got up and left. I will never go back to this restaurant ever. i highly recommend you go anywhere else. We did.

Sean D.

Yelp
What a way to close out 2022, with a horrible meal and dining experience! The service was horrific, the food was way too salty, and they forgot to even bring the salads. Such a far cry from what Tony Angelo's used to be. If you want a good Italian meal, choose somewhere else.

Alaynna K.

Yelp
When you can't get Tony Angelo's cuz "Ain't there no more", you go for the next best thing!!!!! Frankie! Nephews Ristourante. Same great food. Unfortunately, this past New Years there was an incident with an elderly man having a medical emergency at the restaurant. Everyone was pretty shook up and did the best they could under the circumstances. The past does speak for itself. Still great service, great atmosphere and great food. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!!!

Yelp
Did not have a good time here, we were a party of 4, 2 of us got steaks and they were both cooked wrong both were supposed to be medium but one came out very rare and one was well done, we had to send the rare one back to be cooked a little more, then they brought it back about 15 minutes later exactly how it was the first time. the italian salad was just some spring mix with a couple tomato chunks drenched in oil, veal parmigiana was good, fish was ok but definitely wasn't fresh. our waitress kept disappearing and then the bus boy started being our waiter while the waitress served just the other table and basically ignored us. the waiter then insulted my grandfather by telling him that he must be italian because he has a huge nose. We definitely will not be going back. I suggest going somewhere else. if you do want good italian food go to Oak Oven, Vincent's, Moscas, Gendusas, or Impastatos (those are just off the tops of my head that i know are much better than this place) i do feel bad about writing this, i don't like making reviews that are bad like this, but hopefully i'll save someone else from having to waste their time and be disappointed
google avatar

Robert L.

Yelp
Convenient and top rated, our recent take out experience was lousy. $88 ( including tip) for 2 entrees, 2 salads, 1 appetizer and 2 desserts seems HIGH; in fact, the food was so disappointing we won't go back. The calamari appetizer was dry and chewy, the eggplant was mostly bread, the veal parmigiana was mediocre. And the ice box pie (they gave us 1 but we paid for 2) was pathetic (see pic). There are too many great Italian Restaurants in our area to spend good money on mediocre food.
google avatar

Bonnie L.

Yelp
Tonight was our first time dining here, and it certainly will not be our last. Every dish was perfect, reminiscent of Tony Angelos. Service was great, even had a waiter who was singing. A great experience, price is right. You are missing a great meal if you do not eat here.
google avatar

Orphan D.

Yelp
Absolutely ridiculous. From the moment the host forgot about us. (We actually had to go to her and she says "Oh I thought you were with them." Chalked it up to her being forgetful. So let's move forward. Here comes the server. Comes to table explains specials but we had to ask for menu and he disappears I ask him if this going to be indicative of the service he will provide tonight? He turns mid sentence and leaves. He comes back says no. I asked if we can have a different server. He laughs and walks away. I have to believe that they are related to the owner. No way in a service industry during a pandemic that patrons are treated this way. I invite the owner to reach out to me and discuss this situation. It's not surprising that the hostess has so many negative reviews. Never felt so unwelcome.

Yelp
Great Italian Food as Usual The former Tony Angelo's chef is back at it again at his newly opened place Nephew Ristorante. I ordered the Deluxe dinner which is a smaller version of the Feed Me. It consisted of spinach salad, one stuffed shrimp, flat noodles with garlic-butter olive oil, fried veal and peppers, split pea soup, crab gravy and pasta, and seafood cup. It was all reminiscent of Tony Angel's style food: excellent. Parking is tight but there's valet parking available.

Jocelyn B.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was very good. Quiet and pleasant atmosphere. I got the feed me dinner. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Others got the pork and it melted in their mouths. All our food was cooked to perfection. Parking is tight but they have spots marked for Nephew's and the valet guy was there to help. Parked with no problem. He was also very polite. Would definitely recommend to eat there.

Gordon N.

Yelp
This is the third time we have gone to Nephew's Ristorante, and we returned because of the quality of the food and service. Last night when we returned for our third visit, we would have never returned if it had been the first time we ever visited. To begin with, tables that arrived after our table were receiving appetizers, and we had yet to receive drinks or menus. The waiter obtained our drink orders, and two of the five drink orders needed to be corrected. This should have been an indication we needed to leave. We remained, and three of the entrees came out cold. Another waiter was attempting to compensate for the poor service we received from our waiter by refilling our drinks and bringing bread to our table. The hostess was busy with phone orders.

Jessica M.

Yelp
Nephews is always delicious and great service! Highly recommend! One of our favorite spots for Italian!

Sharon B.

Yelp
We went to Nephews for New Year's Eve. The food was incredible, it was just like the old Tony Angellos.

Carrie S.

Yelp
We had a terrible experience. I made a reservation at 6:00 pm with my husband for our 9 year anniversary. There were two other tables and three servers and it took us 45 minutes to get our overcooked appetizer of mussels, clams and shrimp and no one came to check on us. We were sitting there, watching the head chef go to the hostess stand and just stare at the door. We had butter at our table, but no bread. For 45 minutes!Another table was seated after us and got their food before us. Don't waste your money!!!
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Stopped into Nephew's for my moms birthday. Such a great atmosphere and delicious food. I absolutely love how they kept the Tony Angello's menu alive! From the homemade pasta to the singing waiters are bellies and hearts were full when we left. We will definitely be returning!

Jay S.

Yelp
Great service in beautiful restaurant. It's in a strip shopping area which gave me pause but never fear. Excellent food. Our waiter Michael was excellent. Reservations required and they valet park.
google avatar

Joseph S. S.

Yelp
I eat at ***** RESTAURANTS! IMPASTATO'S, AUSTIN'S, ANDREA'S, RUTH CHRIS, FLEMING'S ETC.BUT! Bad experience at Nephew's Restaurant and owner still has NOT RESPONDED! Three stuffed shrimp the size if a little finger with only a teaspoon of crab stuffing on one shrimp only. One three inch eggplant/mushroom over cooked and cold when it got to our table. Chef/Owner did not bother to fix problem and ruin our dining experience. We decided to pay for our drinks and part of the meal that was not taken off bill and left. All this talk about Nephew's Restaurant is a lot of crap. Owner/Manager did not come to our table to make things right. If owner ever responds I am willing to give Nephew's Restaurant another chance. NOT UNTIL PROBLEMS FIXED! NO TONY ANGELO'S! DISGRACE!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Not what I expected. So so. Too much oil oil and clarified butter. Fried soft crab was good but sat in a shimmer of butter. Seafood soup was light, spicy and worth the effort. Red gray was ok, I just remember it being a little thicker. Our server, John, was Johnny on the spot. I like Impastato's ambiance, wine menu and vibe.

Peggy E.

Yelp
An unassuming place in a strip center on west Metairie. Walking in is itself a WOW! Neighborhood Restauarant, white table clothes, full bar, and a friendly welcome from the hostess Anita. Since our first visit 4 months ago, we frequent this place on a regular basis. The food is delicious starting with the Italian salad. Chicken /Veal Parmesan, Osso Bucco, and stuffed shrimp have become our favorites. Chef / Owner is nephew of Tony Angelo and cooked aside his uncle for many years. The red sauce is amazing. Great food, excellent service... highly recommended !!
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
A hidden gem!!!!! If you were a long time fan of Tony Angelo's ... as our family was - Nephew's is a MUST!!! Every item, all your faves are on the menu and taste just as you remember with slight twists on the names from the classics!! Don't forget about the "Feed Me"! That's available too! Everything from the charming wait staff, well timed meal delivery, and the FOOD!! We will be back many more times! Tip- The restaurant is on the smaller side for seating and fills up quickly, so reservations are a must!

Yelp
First time in my life that I order dinner and send it back . I order grilled salmon how hard can that be when it came it smelled rotten so I send it back and order a cup a soup ( broth with some onions ) and tons of salt so to said the least I left with a glass a wine and bread . First and last time for us table of four we all left hungry and went somewhere else after spending $140
google avatar

Jackson J.

Yelp
This review is biased toward Frankie and his new restaurant but if it wasn't as excellent and even better in some ways than Tony Angelos, I would not write a review Just suffice to say if you love delicious authentic Italian cooking, the end result here will not disappoint. Of course you can't have everything and I miss the old location and building. The private rooms and something we will never see again Mr Tony cruising the dining room with wife beater T shirt and towel over his shoulder making everyone feel important and making sure you and your guest are having a great time Try it you will enjoy it
google avatar

Cynthia K.

Yelp
Well if you lived Tony Angelos you will feel right at home. Put down the menu and get the feed me.
google avatar

Joan M.

Yelp
The service was very slow. We were there for three hours and some of the food was cold. We had to keep asking for drink refills. We asked the waitress when we got their if they did separate checks and she said no but she could list each one out on the bill. We had a large table that required five credit cards. When we got the bill it was listed out but when we went to pay she called over the owner to the table. The owner began to yell at us saying we were tying up his waitress. We just spent over four hundred dollars at his restaurant and we were being treated like that. This owner has a lot to learn about treating customers. Will not go back their again.

Addie E.

Yelp
What can I say? This is the closest thing to Tony Angelo's. Simply the best. Grateful that it exists.
google avatar

Ralph F.

Yelp
Best place to get truly authentic Italian food. Just say "feed me" and you can look forward to 10-15 plates of the best Italian food you have ever eaten. Waiters are professional and friendly, and pay attention to details.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
This is arguably the best Italian restaurant in New Orleans. The food is honestly better than the old Tony Angelo's. Just an amazing experience all around. I recommend the mushroom salad, egg plant, the seafood cup and the cannelloni. The veal with peppers and mushrooms is exquisite. They also have a wonderful pasta bordelaise. One of my favorite places to go
google avatar

Ellen Y.

Yelp
We waited over an hour to get a table after having a reservation. After ordering, the waiter brought appetizer salad and main course at once. We sent the main course back and ate the appetizers and salad. Then we waited another hour to get the main course. The food was mediocre at best. The waiter never asked about dessert until after he brought the check. This is my first and last visit.

Samantha K.

Yelp
This place has 0 parking. They do have a valet that we did not take advantage of, not sure where they even take your car. The food is pretty pricey and i dont feel it meets "pretty pricey" standards. Theres lots of places that meet the deliciousness standards when it comes to price and this isnt one of them. The food was okay, a lot of oil. I like to try new places and this one files under "1 and done".
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTING. Artichoke soup was overcooked. The expensive veal dish consisted of a tiny piece of veal rolled up into this "thing" that looked like a wasp nest and was hard as a rock. My son told me his fish dish was mediocre. I told the ladies in my exercise class about my experience and one Italian lady said "Oh, that place is horrible. I went there once and I'm never going back." I feel sad to report this because I loved Tony Angelo's.
google avatar

Victoria J.

Yelp
To say this place was a pleasant surprise would be an understatement. Like so many Native New Orleanians i have fond memories of Tony Angelo's. My very first trip there was to celebrate a birthday for my Great Grandmother. Losing a place than spanned the lives of your great grandparents though your own kids was a sad loss. But now the food is back at the Nephew's. One bite of the seafood cup will send you right back to years gone by of Lobster Cup at Tony Angelo's. There is no doubt that the atmosphere has changed. Gone is the old house and feel of eating in your grandmothers dining room. The Nephew's in a small strip with another restaurant. They offer valet parking to alleviate the challenges of a small lot. It isn't as warm and inviting as sitting down to dinner at Mr. Tony's dining room, they have done a great job of bringing some style and upscale comfort to a space that doesn't easily fit the style of the food being served. A few of my musts try's from this visits: the stuffed shrimp, eggplant Tina (it has a new name, still taasts great. I had the cannelloni and it was amazing.

Frank P.

Yelp
Frankie and his wonderful, delicious creations are back ladies and gentlemen. From the first to the last bite of everything we ordered was just as we remember from Tony Angellos. Eggplant roll ups, oyster bienville, marinated crab claws, brisket salad, and Osso Bucco with a side of homemade pasta. Even the bread rolls and the cheese containers are the same. So happy to have this back our list of favorite places to go eat. Do your self a favor and go try it out for yourself. You can thank me later.
google avatar

Richard H.

Yelp
Same exact menu as the old Tony Angelo's in Lakeview. The sauces were identical. They've only been open a few weeks and there were some definite confusion issues amongst the servers but I really think this will change. Parking was a little tight as they share the building with a pizza joint that was very busy. If you were a fan of Tony Angelo's you'll like this.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
We were a bit worried about this restaurant, having seen the recent reviews panning the food and service. However, our visit last Friday put our concerns to rest - the service was great and food was wonderful, just like the old Tony Angelos. Our complaints, if that, were minor: maybe too much red sauce on the eggplant dish (scrape it off); the oysters too small (out of season); etc. The cocktails were cold and well-crafted, the osca bucco was fabulous, the crab claws were plentiful and in a wonderful marinate, the key lime pie scrumptious. Give this restaurant a try; you won't be disappointed. Caio!
google avatar

Moondusterr B.

Yelp
Wonderful. So glad to taste the familiar favorites from the "Feed Me" menu. Dining room a lot smaller then Tony Angelo's so it would be best to make reservations as we went on a Saturday night and there were still no empty tables by 10pm. Drink prices kind of ridiculous, $12.00 for a Tito's Screwdriver? But who cares about the drinks when the food is the real star here.
google avatar

Carl L.

Yelp
This was a throw back in time to Tony Angelos. Brings back fabulous memories. Can't wait to return many more times.

Brittany L.

Yelp
Although all of the food we received was good, I never received what I actually ordered. I wanted to try one of their small "feed me" options so I could try specific dishes. However, our waitress brought out just whatever she felt like bringing.

Melissa S.

Yelp
My family and I visited Nephews on Friday June 26th. I believe the same time as Brian C's group. There was a group of woman with one obnoxious guest. The point I MUST refute the MOST: while the owner did address the woman after her many petty complaints, NOT once did he curse or use any vulgar language. She did call him an unflattering name, while he remained professional. The parking valet was extremely accommodating, as I did not want to valet park, either. All I had to do was ASK, and the attendent moved a cone in the spot of my choosing. And now for my review: The eggplant rolls are my favorite and they did not disappoint. Every bite absolutely delicious. The veal parmigiana is my go to dish at Nephew's. So tender and served with the best red gravy. We also go for the "Feed Me" - several courses of the freshest, best tasting dishes you will ever find. My advice for the Feed Me - Go Hungry! Can't go there without ordering the lemon icebox pie. So good - it's a perfected blend of sweetness and tart.

Yelp
The food and service were just like the old days at Tony Angelo's. This time we had the marinated mushrooms, lobster cup (now a seafood cup and veal parm.). Next trip will definitely be the the Feed Me.
