The 16 Best Restaurants In Newport, Rhode Island 2024 - Newport - The Infatuation

"Newport Creamery feels like an old-school soda shop that married your favorite diner. Black and white pictures of the original 1920s creamery line the walls above families talking over placemat drawings, while locals sit between couples at the counter slurping Awful Awfuls, the Creamery’s signature milkshake-like “drink.“ Definitely pair the famous waffled grilled cheeses, Big Beef Burgers, or club sandwiches with their crispy tots. The ice cream window is also open all day and until 11pm on the weekends, making it a good stop after a movie or long day at the beach." - Danielle Rose

"Belly up to the circular bar at this soda fountain off Bellevue Ave for classic shakes (specifically, the “Awful Awful”), sundaes, and cones, all with flavors ranging from black raspberry to maple walnut and crazy vanilla (vanilla flavor, crazy colors). Newport Creamery began by delivering local milk to residents in the ’30s. They then opened a “milk bar” on Main Road, a little north, but we head to this location for a quick, sweet, pit stop in town."

Whenever we stay in Rhode Island we always make it a habit to eat at The Newport Creamery. It’s a very casual, comfortable eatery that serves up traditional breakfast, lunch, and dinner favorites. Prices are extremely reasonable and the wait staff is always courteous. We visit the Middletown RI location and have never been disappointed. Pictured is the Cheese Omelette breakfast. If you’re there later in the day, they have a wide selection of ice cream and shakes. Very good!

Disappointed with Our Visit on June 25 On the evening of June 25, my family and I visited your walk-up window to order some ice cream. The line was a bit long, which we understand happens, but once we reached the window, the ordering process felt disorganized. The employee had to clarify multiple times what we ordered. which made things more confusing than necessary. The biggest issue, though, was the condition of the ice cream. While we were standing at the window, the cooler lid right next to us remained open the entire time. One of the flavors we originally wanted was so soft that the employee actually advised us not to choose it. We ended up picking a different flavor, but even that one was very soft—almost melted. It was disappointing to wait in line only to be served ice cream that clearly hadn’t been kept at the proper temperature, especially during such hot weather. I wish we had been made aware of the issue before paying. It also seemed like the employees were a bit overwhelmed or untrained, as there was a lot of running around and confusion behind the window. Hoping to see some improvements, as we were really looking forward to this visit.

Stopped by for a bite. We all loved the food. I had a spicy chicken sandwich on a waffle. My friend had meatloaf. We were full so no desert.

My friend has a life-threatening allergy and Shawn made us feel so reassured and comfortable! After trying to get accommodated at multiple different ice cream shops, this one was able to make my friend feel like she could eat here safely. Will come back here every single time!

Google
Must have gotten unlucky. Went here during our time in Rhode Island this summer. The server seemed highly inconvenienced by us and was quite rude. The food was pretty good except my order was entered incorrectly so just got the basic Big Beef instead of Big Beef “The Creamery Way” (commonly known as a patty melt). I probably don’t need to try again. The Awful Awful was decently good though!

Out of towner visiting a local establishment for the first time and loved it! We tried an assortment of cold desserts, some unique, some classic, all delicious. The Awful Awful is a twist on a milkshake that earns it's name on the cup and the ice cream overall is great. Above all the service was exceptional. Considerate and truly caring our waiter absolutely made the trip worth it. Atmosphere was an N/A simply due to being there just before closing.

Google
The ice cream was great, but the kids working seemed a bit confused and under-trained. I understand that it is the beginning of the vacation season, but a bit more training for them would help. But great ice cream and selection of flavors.

Yelp
Yes, it does get five stars, and hits this mark for a bunch of reasons. Years ago, every town of any consequence had one, or two, or three, dining establishments where a person could get sandwiches, a burger, fries, ice cream, or breakfast. The drink of choice was coffee, and maybe a Coke. Maybe this restaurant was a strictly local place, or maybe it was part of a chain, but it served great comfort food that everyone enjoyed. Today, you can't find as many of these small restaurants any more, as they have been displaced by fast causal eateries, or locations specializing in more exotic fare, or perhaps a luxury place. Fortunately, there is still the Newport Creamery, still doing it well in Middletown, right by where the chain started. What you get is a menu similar to what local restaurants always used to serve, with the standards and standbys, along with a small seafood selection (it's right by the ocean, so why not), and ice cream. And, of course, there is the Awful Awful, and no trip to Newport Creamery at any of its locations would be complete without one. It's a big, supercharged milk shake that is Awful big and Awful good, hence the name. I have been getting them for over 40 years and they never disappoint. It was the perfect chaser to my burger and fries which is as good as I have always had every time I've gone to one of Newport Creamery's locations. There is a window serving ice cream for takeout and, while I've had it before, I had to forego it on my most recent visit, as the Awful Awful had me hitting my limit for the afternoon. If there was anything better than the food itself, it had to have been the service. Our server, whom I believe was from down South, was knowledgeable about everything (and I mean everything) on the menu, made sure everything was prepared exactly as we wanted, and never hovered over us as we enjoyed a very memorable lunch. She herself would have warranted five stars! I've been going to Newport Creamery locations for over 40 years, and Newport Creamery still does regular food incredibly well. Many of its competitors have changed or gone by the wayside, but this great place still produces real food for real people, and does it as well as ever. Keep up the great work.

Yelp
Talk about some good ice cream! This place is a must stop if you're in Newport. The only negative I would say is the menu doesn't have any prices listed. Aside from this.,. Holy moly is so good! I ended up with a cup and two scoops: cookies and cream and mint. You can definitely tell a difference in the quality of the cream. It's so good!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit to Newport Creamery. I went with some friends for dinner on a Thursday evening, and the restaurant was very quiet. We were seated immediately, and our server was quick to bring out waters for the table. I had the super crunchy grilled cheese, which is a heart attack of a sandwich, which means it tasted really good! My friend got the grilled cheese burger, which was even better! We all got milkshakes, which were standard fare. All in all, this was a tasty meal and I would come back again.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick bite one afternoon & ended up going back a few days later for breakfast before leaving town. The food was good & plentiful. The service was friendly. The diner reminded me of a slower time from years past - a throwback - as if you'd walked into a diner from 30 years ago, but cleaner.

Yelp
On our way back from Newport we decided to stop off for a sundae. I went with the brownie sundae, with a brownie and chocolate ice cream, and it certainly did not disappoint! It was very quiet inside and we were served immediately, so it was an overall pleasant trip.

Yelp
This is a local ice cream chain that I had tried before. We came here after our visit to Newport and got in the ice cream line outside. The experience would have been better if it weren't for the manager chastising the rest of her crew in front of customers. She was blaming them for not talking or responding to her and it just seemed like a miserable workplace. I felt bad for the workers there who were just trying to do their jobs. The ice cream we got included the maple walnut and walnut fudge. It was disappointed because they ran out of the other flavors we wanted to try and it felt like there weren't as many options. It would have been better if they updated the flavors they were out of on the board in real time. There is no outdoor seating so we ended up having our ice cream standing outside.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Uhhh awfully confusing is how I would describe this place. Saw a bunch of people waiting in line outside so I decided to stop by. First off, the menu is missing quite a few things. All it lists are flavors & toppings, and in the middle there's a tiny piece of paper that states "classic", "outrageous" and "cookie monster". This menu in the middle is the only thing that lists prices. Now, there's no listings of any sizes (kiddie, small, medium), no prices, or even if you can get cups or cones of ice cream...just this very cryptic piece of paper. I later found out from someone standing in line that this little menu is listing their types of milkshakes...would've been nice to have that word somewhere on the menu. I just opted for two kiddies with jimmie's and it came to ~$12. Couldn't tell ya how much each kiddie was or how much jimmie's cost as it wasn't listed anywhere... Don't know if it's not really meant to be a takeout window and if their restaurant menus have more descriptions and options. However, if they are going to operate this window as such the menu board needs to be updated. The actual ice-cream was just ok, wouldn't write home about it. Beware there is also no outdoor seating available.

Yelp
Stopped here for a sundae, went with the Ultimate Campfire & Cookies Sundae... Three scoops of S'more-OH! ice cream. A marshmallow flavored ice cream with a graham cracker swirl, and cookie pieces. Smothered with hot fudge, graham cracker crumbs, mini marshmallows, Oreo® Cookie pieces, whipped cream and a cherry!! So good!

Yelp
The service was good , quick bite . The place is like a diner simple ambiance. The food was ok our sandwich was super dried . Wouldn't go back for the food but definitely the ice cream .
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped in for breakfast and had a very large party! The staff didn't bat and eye at the number in our party (or the number of small children!) and seated us quickly. When we all were ready to order, the food came out correct (which is a feat with so many people!) and fairly quickly! They have a large variety of breakfast dishes. I had a breakfast quesadilla and it was fantastic. My cousin raved about her breakfast burrito. The pancakes and other items also had rave reviews from the family. My daughter ate a delicious breakfast sandwich and topped it off with a cereal banana split--she loved it and it there was plenty to share with her other cousins. I appreciated how friendly and accommodating the restaurant was, and loved the breakfast menu!
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
There's an icecream takeout window which is pretty nice, but honestly the icecream wasn't the most amazing thing in the world and they're not too generous with their scoops. A small will cost you pretty much $6.50 which is a bit pricy for the area. Maybe they're more generous with their shakes! Tried the mint chocolate chip and chocolate chip cookie dough. Servers seemed a bit overwhelmed but very nice.
google avatar

Jacintha T.

Yelp
Jr Awful Awful It's an odd thing. A milkshake with ice crystals intentionally. They add any syrup to give it flavor. It was just okay.
google avatar

M A.

Yelp
Wow! We loved the chocolate awful, awful! It was delicious! We also loved their waffle grilled cheese with tater tots. There was enough perfectly melted cheese!
google avatar

Novella N.

Yelp
We came here on our last night in Newport! We had heard about the Awful Awful and needed to try. When I first entered the place, it reminded me a lot of Friendly's! We were seated right away in one of their comfy booths. Their menu has so many options, mostly comfort food which is a plus. (Calories don't count on vacation!) Not sure if I'm basic but I wasn't feeling the fried stuff so I ordered the salad with grilled chicken. My friends ordered a chili dog and a grilled cheese. I had been planning to try the ice cream but I noticed there weren't any dairy free flavors on the menu. My friends ordered the Awful Awful in chocolate and Oreo; the latter came out the winner. The service was great here but I gave 4 stars due to no dairy free ice cream!
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
A The ice cream was good but very disappointed in service and "scoop" size. We had heard great things about Newport Creamery, went out of our way to go, and sadly the trip was not worthwhile.
google avatar

Risa S.

Yelp
We came in on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. They have good staples as well as unique options. I got the vermonster which was delicious. My husband got the tuna salad sandwich. The servers were friendly and the food came quickly. For dessert I got an awful awful, better than a milkshake!
google avatar

Alli R.

Yelp
Let me preface by saying that I have only had ice cream/shakes and I have no comments on indoor dining or the food. My parents have lived in Newport for 9 months and we always stop here for a treat! My dad always gets a 32 oz vanilla awful awful with triple malt. I either get a chocolate awful awful or a hot fudge sundae. From what I've gathered, 'awful awful' is their special mixture, where a frappe is like a regular milkshake (but I was a little confused and everything was tasty anyway). During the summer, the outside stand is fun and easy to walk up to, but during the off-season you have to go inside to order ice cream/shakes and there isn't a very good waiting area so it can get packed inside the diner when it's busy.
google avatar

Melinda M.

Yelp
Well it has been many years since we visited a Newport Creamery but stopped by for breakfast after a very early appt. Pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was clean, decor diner type and service quick and pleasant. Husband had a Western omelette and I had a bacon cheese omelette. Both served with potatoes and choice of toast or muffins. Tasty, good portions but not overwhelming. Coffee refills. Must be doing something right judging by the amount of people coming in after us. The place was almost full.

Yelp
"Oh, Lucy looked sweet just a-strollin' down Newport Street" (Rolling Stones) When I lived in Worcester, there was a fantastic buzz of excitement when Newport Creamery opened up a restaurant on Park Avenue. I remember making more than one lunch pilgrimage with co-workers and waiting on line to get a burger or sandwich or an Awful Awful over there. The Worcester location is long gone, and truth be told there are only ten Newport Creamery locations open today. Two are in Massachusetts and the other eight are sprinkled across Rhode Island. We visited the Middletown location for lunch and for the most part had a nostalgic and fun experience. We dipped into the reasonably priced Senior Menu and selected a Cheeseburger Combo ($8.29) and a Clam Roll Plate ($8.49) The food was very good -hot and fresh and very tasty. I was very impressed by the potato salad that came with my clam roll. It was a big portion and was terrific. One cool thing about the Senior Menu is the ability to add on an ice cream Sundae for just $2.49. Yeah, it was smallish, but not exceedingly so and was actually a very good value. Service was uneven. The hostess was great and seated us right away. Let me be charitable and say that our server has improvement opportunities.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
The service was wonderful and the taste was what I had remembered from tasty past visits to this classic Newport, RI gem! I was only bummed that the menu plays up their curly fries but doesn't mention you have to specify that is what you want. I was looking forward to the curly fries so kinda bummed by the steak style fries so got (though these were still tasty).
google avatar

Phil R.

Yelp
If you want to be treated like crap, wait forever for your mediocre food, and watch and endless series of f-ups from the management staff to all the customers, then this is the place for you! We got in and the place was 70% EMPTY and the "hostess" seated us at a 4 top in the middle of the room, so natch we asked for a booth (there were like tons of them left and open) and she told us "no". What??? I worked in restaurants for 5 years through school and this would NEVER happen! The hostess literally argued with us and finally gave in. We could hear her bitching to her staff - it kind of sucked and made us uncomfortable. The waitress we had was on her first night and was great. She deserves the credit for being the only good thing about the night. There were dirty tables and tons of dirty plates all over the place while the staff walked by them and were aloof. I could go on and on but here's the bottom line : total craphole with a bitchy staff that makes you feel totally unwanted and like an annoyance. Kitchen was slow as molasses too. Avoid this place there are much better options in Middletown and Newport!
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
Visited here on Sunday for a mid afternoon lunch. This place totally reminds me of a Friendly's (IYKYK). The food was good. You could definitely tell that they are short staffed in the kitchen because it took a long time for the food to come out. Our server said he was bouncing around between serving and in the kitchen. I had a sundae for dessert, and the ice cream was more icy than creamy. I would definitely come back and try again outside of tourist season...it may make all the difference in the world.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
I wished I had read the reviews before we got here. I'd say they were excessively generous. Why they are still in business befuddles me. We just got ice cream. We asked for Crazy Vanilla(clearly on the board)- "we don't have that anymore." Ok French vanilla- we don't have that any more. We went through this 4 times( someone can't take the favors they haven't carried since last year off the board?) Then we waited 10 minutes for ice cream(, and we were the only ones there.) We got our ice cream and looked for someplace to sit, nothing anywhere on the property. So we went inside and asked if we could sit there. We were told yes. There were 8 customers in the restaurant including 4 of us. 3 minutes later we were told to leave because we didn't order inside the restaurant, just at the window. We got the...manager says, but of course the manager never showed their face ( I wouldn't have had an issue if there were people waiting or there weren't 40 empty tables and no one there) After all this, it's not like the ice creams were anything but mediocre, or the prices were good. Just a horrible experience
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
Most creamy delicious chocolate chip ice cream! Good service and enjoyed the ice cream outdoors where I could enjoy it... unlike the SW USA where it would melt in minutes! Food is also served here so check it out.
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
A staple when visiting the area. Cant bring myself to try the Awful Awful...but this time I had PBF & Pieces and the hubby had the Chocolate Lovers Sundae. So good!!!
google avatar

Yelp
TL;DR: expect to wait in line in the evening & get a Frap instead of an Awful Awful. We've passed this place several times at night and there's always a line around the corner so we decided to finally come on a Wednesday night. We arrived around 9:10pm and then an employee came out and started telling people they were closed and we learned a lot about this place from him. On weekdays the walk-up ice cream window technically closes at 9pm but they allow people to get in line until 9:15pm. On weekends, the window line closes at 10pm. The employee taught us that an Awful Awful is a milk-based milkshake (frozen milk + flavored syrup) whereas a Frap is an ice cream-based milkshake (ice cream + milk). There were only 2 employees working the window and it took them probably 5 mins to make one Awful Awful so when one person orders several of them to go, that's how you end up waiting 30mins in line. We just got a scoop of regular ice cream. The Cashew Caramel Turtle, and Cookie Dough were good, but didn't have many chunks of stuff. I'd give it 3.5 stars for the ice cream, but the workers at the window were SO friendly and patient even though they work almost an hour after 9, so it was definitely a 4-star experience! I'd want to come back during the day and try a Frap!

Emma S.

Yelp
I grew up going here on my trips to Rhode Island and I was pretty disappointed this time. The waitress was pretty rude. I got a jr sprinkles awful awful and it didn't taste like much, they need to add vanilla or something inside of it and it was pretty watery not thick at all. The fries had good flavor, but were cold and soggy.
google avatar

Janet P.

Yelp
My one star is based on the 10 minute wait standing outside where two people were waiting at the window when I arrived and not one order had been produced. The same two ppl were standing on line when I decided to leave because the 4 employees were chatting away while customers waited. Another person behind us left as well....

Brenda B.

Yelp
Excellent service excellent food. Came here with family and we all ordered burgers and chicken wraps and everything we had was absolutely delicious. We would definitely come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Weekend trip to Newport had to stop for breakfast and ice cream. Place has nice history and getting ice cream to go along is always good. Breakfast was god quality however the ice cream itself was lacking flavor. We were told it wasn't ice cream the awful awful is frozen milk... it wasn't horrible but I wouldn't order again. Server was nice and the old ladies that we sat with were a trip. Would return!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
We ordered shakes, Oreo, chocolate and a Cookie Monster. The cookie on the Cookie Monster was flavorless and dry. In fact all the shakes were flavorless and runny for just being ordered. There wasn't a long line but we had to wait a good while for our shakes. Wish I'd read the reviews before going here but it was spur of the moment. When visitors say they're going here we recommend different places on Island.

Samantha N.

Yelp
I got here at 4 o'clock on a Sunday afternoon. We asked to order ice cream inside as we are on the motorcycle and needed a place to sit. We are placed at a table immediately outside of the kitchen, next to the bathrooms and proceeded to wait for 20 minutes for two sundaes. The counter that we originally asked to sit at (we were told we couldn't because it was closed) filled up with people coming in who were served long before we were. The table and glasses were dirty, floor was disgusting. We couldn't leave fast enough and will NOT be going back. Incredibly disappointed.

Mb B.

Yelp
How do you recommend a restaurant to Gordon Ramsay. Newport creamery in RI needs to be cursed out by Gordon. The kids Mac and cheese is boxed Kraft Mac and cheese. A restaurant connected to a dairy farm should sell food made with good cheese not Kraft powdered cheese. I might cancel my ice cream order. The ice cream might be store bought breyers. The potato salad taste like it came from a supermarket.

Jeff H.

Yelp
It's basically a diner with ice cream. Typical diner type food with waiters. It's very similar to a Friendly's if you are familiar with that. Met expectations.

Heidi D.

Yelp
The waitress we had was great, but everything else was AWFUL! The food tasted like they went to the store opened a box and deep fried it. The salad dressing was like water and spicy. I spent $100 on food that went in the trash. I thought for sure the ice cream would've been decent because Newport Creamery is supposed to be known for that and even that was not so good. I felt bad for our waitress. She had to struggle because she was the only waitress at the time. The Restaurant smelt old and stale. I should've ran instead of trying to find an upside to the place. Total waste of money. I don't usually post bad review, but I had to make others aware.
google avatar

Anita A.

Yelp
I wish that I could say that I had a great time at this location. The restaurant needs a lesson in customer service. The ambiance was clear almost immediately. We were not welcome. It took 5 minutes for them to acknowledge that we were there and we still stood for another 10 minutes before they started seating people. This was not what bothered me. The pandemic has everyone short staffed. The reason they gave for not seating us was because they didn't have a table ready for us. They said they would seat us when they had a table ready. Honestly this didn't bother me either. What happened next was what bothered me. There where a total of 4 parties by the time they started seating. They proceeded to seat everyone who was white and everyone else( who had melanin) was ignored.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Just what we needed for our family. Simple diner fare without any fuss. Nothing fancy but food you can count on. However, unlike a diner they do not serve breakfast all day. So, if you want breakfast come before 11am. Both the waitresses we had for breakfast and lunch were personable and very efficient. Coffee was great! Appreciated that we could pay our tab by scanning the QR code on the receipt.... makes getting out after finishing easier on everyone.

Kevin B.

Yelp
We had such a great breakfast experience at Newport Creamery. The wait staff was friendly & efficient. The food was prepared as ordered & came out timely. The facility was clean spacious. Great breakfast place!

Josh G.

Yelp
The time I was held hostage at Newport Creamery for breakfast. Our party of 6 waited for about 35 minutes before getting seated. Server came over after waiting a while in the corner. Put our food and drink order in pretty much immediately when we saw our server. Drinks came out with our food. We waited a while with no silverware or napkins while our food was in front of us. No drink refills, and missed order items that were on the bill for several of us. Overall service was sparse and food was just okay. Breakfast shouldn't be a two hour production.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
My coworkers and I visited Newport Creamery and had a great time. We visited for ice cream after having dinner downtown. The line was long, but the staff was friendly and greeted us when we walked inside. I enjoyed their selection of flavors for ice cream. The ambiance reminds me of an old-time ice cream shop, which makes sense since it has been around for over 100 years.
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
Quick stop before our drive home. If Kirstin asked one more question, I thought the girl behind the counter was going to strangle her.... not the friendliest but we figured it out. Decent product, prices were average. Eat in or takeout window!
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Food is great, don't use YELP to order with through grubhub. Quoted 30-50 minutes finally canceled the order after 1 hour and 24 minutes. Ordered through the website, had the food in 20 minutes.
google avatar

Jeannie M.

Yelp
It's my first time here and I can't believe how rude the general manager was to me. Her name is Ashley and with her attitude, I never want to see her face ever again! The food better be worth the trouble I had to endure with her. I was not in a mood to argue with her. Even my 9 year old son asked me why is she so mean!
google avatar

Amiee D.

Yelp
Good quick stop. Fist time here while visiting town. I couldn't resist so ordered two "Awful Awful", strawberry tasted much flavorful than coffee flavor. Food/snack was good as we were all super hungry. Waitress lady was rushing me at the beginning to order my drink (while I was deciding since it's my first time here) but she got more friendly towards the end (lol). We stopped by around 3pm so no lunch/dinner rush. Overall good experience.
google avatar

Luna K.

Yelp
I've cream brownie sundae - brownie tasted stale and was extremely hard I could barley cut into it was like a ROCK, the vanilla ice cream tasted like it has freezer burn, hot fudge was extremely stingy. I really expected more from a place that specializes in ice cream? Won't be going back.
google avatar

Karl H.

Yelp
The food here is very good. But this time around I went for there apple crisp Ala mode. It was warm and yummy.
google avatar

Lesli S.

Yelp
We went for breakfast but wanted to get an awful awful, however we were too full. Even with only 2 servers it was wonderful. Hannah was our server and she was very nice and did her best with not a lot of help. Awesome place.

Yelp
The best way to describe this place is that it's a Newport Friendlys! Ice cream sundaes and shakes (named Awful, Awful .... which are everything but) are well made and delicious. Food is typical diner food, service is typical diner service. Prices are affordable too! Nice stop if you wanna break from the seafood and pricey restaurants on Thames St while vacationing!

Yelp
Had 4 flavors last week and all four were freezer burned, as if the ice cream had melted and then refroze. I recommend Frosty Freeze right down the street. The Creamery is nice to give jobs to high schoolers, but those kids could care less if the scoops they are handing out are bad or not. And I'll guess that the managers don't care either.
