Where to Eat in Chicago

"Chef Grant Achatz is considered by many to be one of the best chefs in the world. Building off the success of Alinea, which won endless press and adoration for its progressive and creative approach to food, Achatz opened Next, a restaurant that changes its entire concept seasonally. At Next, you get a reservation through the purchase of a ticket that includes the cost of the entire meal, tip, and any wine pairings. The pricing is dynamic, so a Saturday night will cost more than a Tuesday. Tickets should be bought in advance, though they do release some day-of tickets on their Facebook page.Where: 953 W Fulton Market, Chicago, IL 60607" - MATADOR_NETWORK

A Critic Thinks Next’s Latest Menu Isn’t Transcendent - Eater Chicago

"Next’s “Silk & Spice” menu is a fine experience but lacks the “transcendent quality, which this kitchen so often delivers,” to rank among the restaurant’s best efforts. Phil Vettel gives three stars to the current iteration that’s inspired by the Silk Road. A tart composition of peasant vegetables, gilded nuts, and seeds is an “enjoyable soup, but concept outpace[s] execution.” A “so-crazy-it-works” parfait features roasted banana puree, mango puree, and caviar, topped with grated Buddha’s hand, while “delicious” pork belly in Oaxacan mole is finished with squares of watermelon radish and raw onion. The final savory course is “heavy on visuals” — a color woven basket is filled with cubes of A5 wagyu and “suspended over the raw spices on a plate of clear plexiglass.” For dessert, curry sorbet is made tableside and served with other sweets showcasing curry ingredients." - Jeffy Mai

A Critic Thinks Radio Anago’s Less is More Approach is ‘Worth the Plunge’ - Eater Chicago

"Next delivers another four-star performance with its Nouvelle menu according to Phil Vettel. The refined lineup of French dishes features luxuries such as a 'painstakingly precise' mille-feuille of spring vegetables and smoked butter; and a 'magazine-cover-worthy' piece of cooked salmon topped by sorrel puree and sorrel leaves. The 'most dramatic dish' is a twist on coddled eggs while meaty courses include a reimagined chicken pot pie. Capping things off is a strawberry pate a bombe, with chocolate ganache and Banyuls jam, that 'echoes the colors and sweeping curves of the [dining room’s] graffiti.'" - Jeffy Mai

Been meaning to come here for years and finally pulled the trigger on it. Service was amazing and the ambience/aesthetics of the restaurant were classy and cozy. Food was great! It was super tasty and portions were filling. We got the pork bao bun, beef tartare, Dan Dan udon noodles, chicken schnitzel gnocchi, and Blackies crispy chicken with 2 cocktails. Although the bao bun and Dan Dan noodles were not super authentic, it was still tasty! Thank you for having us!

I've been meaning to write this review for quite some time, but haven't had the chance to gather some old photos. I've been going to NeXT Restaurant since 2014 after a co-worker mentioned that I had to try Chef Blackie's creations. It's been over 10 years and I haven't been disappointed by anything on the menu. My favourite thing I love getting each time is the Tempura Cheese Curds with Sriracha Maple lick. Sooo good! When my partner and I got engaged in 2018 and were supposed to get married at NeXT in 2020, well, everyone knows what happened there. Gillian Blackie who facilitates events and weddings at NeXT was so very kind accommodating us. We didn't get married until 2023 and we were so pleased with the event (all Covid Restrictions completely gone and people comfortable socializing again en masse). Our wedding was small, but cozy, and Gillian was so thoughtful of trying to accommodate a family member with a disability. She did a great job of coordinating our external vendors (DJ, Officiant, and Photo/Videographers), and their serving staff was friendly and helpful. Secret Wedding Tip - There is a beautiful wooden arch bridge just 5 minutes away from the venue for photos. Over the years, my wife and I would go to NeXT for special occasions or to showcase to our friends how good the food is here. I remember during one of the holiday seasons, I would be passing through to get take out and Chef Blackie took the time to show me the operations behind the "Turkey Take Home Dinner" specials. What a well oiled machine and so cool to see how coordinated everything goes. My wife and I recently celebrated our anniversary here over the Christmas season and it always feels like home. I can not recommend enough NeXT Restaurant for your special occasion or a nice dinner out. It's literally Ottawa's best restaurant. Kudos to Chef Blackie, Gillian, and all the wonderful staff!

Second time visiting and I already know there will be a third, a fourth, and countless more. Every dish was a work of art—creative, perfectly balanced, and absolutely delicious. My favorite was the pad see ew, and I was so caught up enjoying it that I completely forgot to take a picture. The atmosphere is pure elegance, from the romantic lighting to the plush, comfortable chairs. Our waitress, Barbara, was warm, knowledgeable, and an absolute pleasure. I’m already counting down the days until I can come back for brunch.

This was our third visit and it is ALWAYS fabulous. Great atmosphere, wonderful service, and food with flavour combinations that are pure delight. We liked every dish we tried - three different appetizers and three mains. The espresso martini was also a hit. Very lucky that Stittsville has a place of this calibre in our area.

I was clearing space on my phone by deleting photos when I realized I had never shared my experience at Next. I celebrated my birthday there two years ago, and the memory is so valuable that I feel it’s worth sharing—even after all this time. we went for their menu tasting. The place was beautiful and the food was delicious But the most remarkable part of Next is Michael, the chef and owner. He’s a genuinely great person who makes every guest’s experience truly special

Our exhālō Spa teams gathered to celebrate the start of the holiday season at NEXT last weekend. We enjoyed a delicious 4 course meal, private room, and the coziest holiday atmosphere locally, making the evening feel even more special. We started our dinner with heirlem tomato, it was delicious. Then it went downhill. It took 50 minutes between the salad and our our food. We were told there are large parties and events. But if your kitchen can't handle the volume, they should take in more guests. We ordered the crispy chicken and pad see ew to share. The flavour of the crispy chicken was good, however it was very salty, eating with the rice (they were crispy) doesn't help cutting down the saltiness. Pad see ew had braised pork, and fried tofu pieces. It started not bad, but the more we eat the saltier it gets. Not sure why the tofu needed to be served this way. It was dry and powdery with no flavour, serve no purpose. We didn't end up finishing either dishes. The server asked if we wanted to pack them, we said it was too salty, not sure is she heard it, she just walked away with the dishes. The automatic doors do not work here. The push button for the automatic door was hidden behind a planter (pushed against it) to purposely blocking it. And all other push buttons inside or outside the vestibule don't work. The price of the dishes does not justify the quality and the service we received.
