Where to Eat Sushi in and Around Chicago

"Polished enough for date night yet sufficiently casual for a weekday meal, this sister spot to izakaya-style Nomonomo Japanese Pub makes for a happy addition to Chicago’s neighborhood sushi scene. Snag a spot at the counter for a 90-minute omakase meal, or try the a la carte lineup of maki, nigiri, sashimi, and more in the main dining room." - Naomi Waxman, Eater Staff

Nomonomo Sushi Review - Palmer Square - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Like getting all three red properties in Monopoly, the team behind continues its Logan Square domination with Nomonomo Sushi, their third restaurant in the area. Stick to the simpler nigiri and maki—it’s the best way to enjoy cuts of fish like otoro or salmon, and their well-seasoned rice. Nomonomo has more creative dishes, but ingredients like foie gras or truffle aioli overpower the delicate flavor of the seafood. Most of the seating in the softly lit dining room is tables for two and cozy booths, so this spot works particularly well for dates." - John Ringor

Instead of going to a tried & true, we decided on checking out a new place. 4.5 star out of 90 reviews, should be pretty decent, we thought. The interaction we experienced both on the phone & in person with the male host was strange. Then once we sat, the server came by to our table & silently poured water, ignoring our greeting. She barely smiled, wasn’t welcoming or helpful & it was clear she didn’t want to be there. She checked on us once after we received our food. The food was wayyy overpriced for what we got. Nothing wowed us, and the sushi rice was overly vinegared & our aburi would fall apart due to the rice not being properly prepared. The booziest cocktails we picked were a little on the sweet side. No ambiance, tables are too close together, almost like diner seating. I’d never go back or recommend this place. Too many good sushi restaurants in Chicago to waste hard-earned money here.

We came here for the omakase and all of the fishes were fresh and sweet. The chef Alvaro was friendly and makes the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Every dish is delicious. Alvaro provided great service and we loved him! Highly recommend their omakase. Will definitely revisit!

Google
Nomonomo was exceptional. We stumbled upon the restaurant tonight and couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised. Our server William was knowledgeable and professional, the space was well appointed, and we were served some of the freshest fish we’ve ever had in Chicago. The uni and scallops were standouts. Highly recommended.

**🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Exceptional Sushi Experience!** Nomonomo Sushi delivered an unforgettable dining experience that was worth every penny. While it’s on the pricier side, the quality, flavors, and service more than justify the cost. We started with the *Maguro Tartare* (big-eye tuna, avocado, mango, red onion, cilantro, and chips) as a cold appetizer. While it wasn’t my personal favorite, the meal only got better from there. For the hot appetizer, we chose the *Blistered Shishito Peppers* with garlic ponzu, lemon, and katsuobushi. I’ve always enjoyed peppers, but I never imagined they could be this flavorful on their own—absolutely fantastic and a must-try. For the main event, we ordered two rolls: the *Spicy Scallop* (a classic maki) and the *Kani Hotate* (a signature roll with snow crab, truffle aioli, scallop, avocado, cucumber, chive, roe, and house tartare sauce). The signature roll was hands down the star of the night—it might just be the best roll we’ve ever had! The combination of flavors was mind-blowing, with every bite melting in your mouth. The service was outstanding—attentive, friendly, and professional. The ambiance was quiet and cozy, which perfectly suited our vibe. The only small downside was our seating near the window at the entrance, where it was quite chilly, making it hard to take off our coats. A little attention to heating that area could make the experience flawless. Overall, Nomonomo Sushi exceeded our expectations, and we can’t wait to return. Highly recommend for sushi lovers looking for an elevated dining experience!

Google
We had a lovely dinner here celebrating our friend's birthday. We did the Nomakase tasting menu and all I can say is WOW. Every course was beautiful and delicious! The total price looked high but I left feeling I had great value for the money spent. I particularly loved the 7 piece nigiri section, their Sushi is top notch and is as good as the best sushi I've had in Tokyo. Every piece was beautiful, distinct and delicious. The service was friendly and prompt, being attentive without overbearing. Had I known how good this place was I would have gone sooner!

Google
Sooo good! I am always a big fan of chirashi bowls and no place impressed like Nomo did. The chef packed the bowl with premium, hearty cuts of sashimi. The sushi rice was cooked perfectly even, moist and warm without being sticky. The omakase menu present a decent variety of textures and flavors. Most amazing is our waitress - she managed to coordinate an omakase set and a single chirashi bowl for the two of us to enjoy. I will absolutely come back many times and recommend this place to my friends!

Yelp
Nomonomo Sushi delivers an outstanding omakase experience--fresh, beautifully crafted, and full of flavor. The vibe is sleek yet welcoming, and the service is exceptional: friendly, attentive, and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu. I felt so satisfied, I considered applying for a part-time job just to stay longer.

Yelp
First time checking out this place and it was absolutely worth it. It is a bit on the pricier side but it was good food. Great customer service and ambiance. The veggie and shrimp tempura sushi are delicious and flavorful. Great cocktails.

Yelp
So glad I finally got to try this spot! Super cute space, love the vibe! Our food came out very quickly, drinks arrived after the apps. Our waitress seemed in a bad mood, wasn't the friendliest, but it's ok because the food and vibes were great! To start we got an oyster shooter. This was fantastic full of favor! We got the wings and shumai also. The wings were perfectly cooked, could have used a bit more sauce but still great. I got the black dice cafe to drink and this was great! Tropical vibes. For sushi we got the surf and turf and the mango salsa. The mango salsa roll was great. Full of flavor and very fresh. The surf and turf was ok to me. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Fresh high quality seafood, but it'll cost you a pretty penny at Nomonomo. Portions are small for the price though everything is tasty. Cocktails are well crafted and service makes dining even more enjoyable. I've never seen them crowded so you should be good with or without a reservation. 4.37 stars.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a quick bite before a comedy show. We ordered the Ebi Unagi, Mango Salsa Salmon, and the Shiitake Avocado. The Ebi Unagi was good but didn't feel like anything special. The other two were great and I honestly would come back just for the Shiitake, it was perfect. The Jasmine cocktail was also great and had the perfect strawberry taste, flavorful but not too sweet. The one star off is really just because I wanted a little more out of the flavors. The service was great too! Our server was very attentive and she was incredibly respectful too. She made the ambiance feel even warmer. I really liked the decor and the atmosphere but just recommend a little more heat.

Yelp
Such a great find in Logan square where most of the restaurants were closed before 9pm on a Sunday. We were escorted to table almost end of the restaurant because it was already set up. Our server made some signature cocktails which he was doing a soft opening. Mine was a plum and jasmine martini and my friend got some pear drink which wasn't even on the menu. This was my second time eating all vegetarian sushi because my friend doesn't eat seafood. We got a few delicious platters of mushroom and Avacado sushi and also hot soba noodles which was slightly salty . We were so hungry we wiped out all the food . Our server Kayla was very personable. Definitely will come back when. In the area.

Yelp
Ambiance- super cute restaurant, opted for the omakase experience and I did feel that the height to grab sushi from the counter was a little too tall/off Service- really attentive servers, but the chef didn't seem to talk much Food-good for an omakase experience but there weren't any pieces that stood out to me

Yelp
We came here on a New Year's Eve date and enjoyed our time. Service was prompt - we ordered some fun cocktails to start. My tequila drink was deliciously light and refreshing. We started with the wings - these were crispy and fried with a nice sweet soy sauce that wasn't too dressed or overpowering. We also got the oysters, which had a nice miso sauce that was light as well. Next we had the amberjack sashimi, and this cut was similar to a nice yellowtail and great quality. We also tried the maguro foie gras nigiri, which had a delicious meaty flavor. Finally, the Kani hotate roll had a nice truffle taste. Everything was delicious, not too heavy, and great quality. Would definitely recommend for Japanese food lovers!

Fresh sushi, creative menu, knowledgeable servers, great decor and killer happy hour... what's not to love? The chefs selection is fabulous!!

Yelp
So the plan was to go to Ramen Wasabi but the wait was way too long. Nomonomo was empty and they still asked if we had reservations. We did not. What can I say? I really wish I could have walked away impressed and content with our dinner. To claim "this is my go to sushi spot in Logan" to friends and family that come to visit me in Chicago. But unfortunately, it was underwhelming and so expensive. It is a beautiful, modern space with light wooden finishes everywhere that create a soft, welcoming environment. Our server was training since there was another server following her around. But he didn't introduce himself, I wasn't given an explanation of the menu or any passion behind the dishes. Service was okay. The omakase was served on a bowl over a bed of rice, which was new for me and I cannot remember the Japanese term for that. There was a term for the way it was served and I can't find it on the menu now. But we weren't given any description of any of the sashimi. I didn't really walk away with any highlights.

Yelp
I was so impressed with this newish neighborhood gem! It's been on my list since it opened and I had the chance to pop in yesterday. One weird thing: online it liked like they had no reservations available but there was plenty of space when we walked in. If you're on the fence, call them or try walking in, we were able to be seated right away! My friend and I ordered a round of drinks and a few things to share. The Jasmine cocktail was so tasty! Our server was super friendly and helpful and made great recommendations. The rolls we had were great. This is pricier than some other neighborhood spots but the quality is excellent. I didn't take any pictures but the interior is clean, comfortable, and a good vibe. I'll definitely be back!! Excited to try more across this interesting menu.

Yelp
A new sushi spot dropped into logan square brining some delicious fish in a well designed and decorated spot that nicely opens to outside. The bar is beautifully designed and the happy hour give a you nice selection of bites and drinks. You have plenty of choices of rolls or sashimi/nigiri. I'm not sure exactly what I'd recommend other than grab a nice sample across the menu and you can't go wrong.

Yelp
My husband and I really enjoyed our first visit to this newer sushi restaurant in Logan Square. I made last minute reservations on a Saturday night and we were seated right away when we arrived. To start, I ordered the Black Dice Cafe cocktail. This cocktail reminded me of the delicious tiki style drinks that I've had at other places. Spirit forward and refreshing. The chicken karaage and shiro miso Caesar salad were both great starters. The salad was my favorite between the two of them. We tried a few different rolls. I especially enjoyed the Kani Hotate and El Capitan maki rolls. I definitely want to try the surf and turf roll next time. My husband also did the hand roll omakase and enjoyed the selection. I was impressed with the freshness of the fish. There are a handful of other sushi restaurants in the Logan Square area, but I can't think of that many that feature such high quality fish at this price range. The interior design of the space, service, and food were all memorable. I highly suggest checking this place out.

Yelp
Let the chef just take your tongue on vacation here because it was bliss. This might sound dramatic but this is probably the best sushi I've ever tried in my life. Hats thrown away to the chef, the service, and the atmosphere here, it was perfect.

Yelp
Good but not great sushi, rolls are on the small side, and it's OVERPRICED. Ate at the restaurant with another couple. Everyone had 2 drinks. I had 2 whiskeys for $25 a glass. Everyone else had beer and or sake. So we probably had $120 of liquor. Our bill before tip was $428. We had a 4 of their special rolls which are priced in the $21 to $25 price. They were good, but on the small side. A couple normal maki also which were in the small size. We had several pieces of sashimi which were $7 to $10 a piece and then multiple appetisers. I definitely enjoyed the meal. But I'm not sure I'd come back given the price. I think there is better value elsewhere. I did enjoy the variety of fish they had. They had several fish that you won't find elsewhere. The ambiance was nice although the table was on the small side. Staff was friendly. I'd give it 3.5 stars.

Yelp
I was skeptical when I was easily able to make a reservation for Saturday night less than 24 hours in advance. But this sushi spot from the same team that runs Ramen Wasabi across the street is a hidden gem. Extremely high quality cuts of fish, generous portions of nigiri, and although more expensive than your typical BYO sushi spot, these are not omakase prices. They have a great selection of nightly specials (specials as in fish available for the night, not discounts), and the Hokkaido uni was phenomenal. My one ding is that I wasn't a fan of the spicy tuna roll, which seemed to just be a tuna maki squirted with spicy mayo. Next time I'll stick to the nigiri Ambiance is trendy, but not loud so a great upscale hang

Yelp
We did the omakase, would not do again. Most of the fish was fresh enough, but there was nothing memorable. There was 1 piece of COOKED, very bland shrimp thrown in the middle - what exactly were they thinking here?! Couldn't venture a guess. I love ebi, and to have a stale, cold, cooked piece as part of an omakase was a brutal disappointment as I had high hopes for this spot. It was also extremely rushed- all of the folks at our seating finished much sooner than us. The duration of the entire meal was less than 35 min -and that was with us specifically slowing the pace down a quarter of the way through. Overall, not worth the money for the lack of thoughtfulness and quality.
google avatar

Deborah L.

Yelp
What an outstanding experience we had at this restaurant! The fish was so fresh! There we so many creative options to choose from, and they were able to accommodate gluten free modifications without issue. The price for the quality was super reasonable. I will be back!

Mandy H.

Yelp
Delicious! Amazing staff! Really fun experimental sushi options! Elevated modern feel inside makes it good for dates. The oyster shooter was amazing!

Yelp
How Nomonomo wasn't packed to the gills on a Thursday night is confounding. I can only guess we snuck in before the rest of Chicago caught on to this gem. Across the street from the best ramen in town (Wasabi), it's only a matter of time before the folks waiting to be seated there come and indulge here instead with zero regret, then come back for more. The ambiance is sophisticated and perfectly lit with tasteful wave-inspired wallpaper and simple but elegant design that mixes Japanese and American taste. The sushi was delicious, nigiri delightful, and sashimi lip-smacking good. There were special fish selections not available in the online menu, which was a very pleasant surprise, particularly for someone who studied the menu out of excitement before coming. Service was quick and the plating was beautiful. Bartender Nate took great care of us with recommendations and well crafted cocktails. After indulging in Sake, we wish we had had more and I will make it a point next time to start and finish with it. I cannot wait to go back to Nomonomo; I was already asking my husband before we left when he would be open to coming again. 10/10 recommend. A fantastic addition to the sushi scene in Chicago. Logan has another star restaurant on its hands.

Yelp
What a fabulous meal! Very high quality sushi. One dish was better than the next. This place is a hidden gem - don't miss it!
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped in and sat at bar before doing a standup comedy show at the Lincoln Lodge Theater down the block - convenient. Cool vibe. Very nice bar staff. Had the chicken thighs and miso soup to start. They have a nice entree ,sushi and sashimi selection. Food comes out fast and delicious. Reasonable beer wine and cocktail prices. The staff made an amazing gin and floral cocktail for me to try, which name escapes me. I really like this place and will host my comedy ensemble next visit!
google avatar

Christine D.

Yelp
AMAZING. Delicious food and beautiful restaurant. My husband is from Japan and was so happy with our meal. Japanese chef.

Esther J.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. We ordered an assortment of nigiri & udon. For the sushi, the rice was undercooked and hard, and the sushi slices were too thick for the nigiri. Worst of all, I found a scale on one of my nigiri. The udon and soba were fine. Ambiance and service were good, but for the price, definitely go elsewhere.
google avatar

Eva L.

Yelp
Good sushi, great service, fantastic ambiance in an intimate and tastefully decorated space. Not cheap for the portions, but I would gladly come back again to try the omakase menu in particular since the sashimi was so fresh. The only nit I have is that they are still working out a dessert menu since they are fairly new (just opened 2 months ago). But overall this is a wonderful new addition to the Wicker Park / Logan Square area!

Gladys P.

Yelp
We enjoyed the maki selections and had a fun server. I don't remember the name of the cocktail but I recommend the pink gin drink. Some recommendations when making your reservation: If driving, Milwaukee now only has parking on some parts of the street which makes it difficult to find options. I do not recommend the small tables for 2 people. The tables are small and it's a tight space. We had trouble getting into our seats and had to move the table so the other person could sit down. We also had the table under their vent or fan and had the air on us. It wasn't bad but also a little annoying.
google avatar

K H.

Yelp
Really fresh and delicious! Also not overcrowded which means I'll get back until it gets too busy.
google avatar

Jina K.

Yelp
I am a huge fan of wasabi and nomonomo; so happy they finally opened up a sushi restaurant. Went during soft opening. Beautiful ambiance. The staff as so nice and knowledgeable and the fish is so fresh and good. It did not disappoint. I can't wait to be back.
google avatar

Finn D.

Yelp
Had the omakase and it was remarkable. Many favorites, like salmon, yellowtail and chu toro but also some surprises. Very fresh, and they were very accommodating of allergies. Would absolutely recommend!

Joselyn V.

Yelp
The service here is decent. The ambiance is nice and new. The food here is just mediocre for the price. If you don't mind mediocre sushi, save your money and get all you can eat sushi down the street.

Benajamin H.

Yelp
Lets just say Sushi Taku is better. There was nothing memorable about the Maki or the Nigiri and they just tossed it on our table with zero context as to which piece was what. Solid meh experience.
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
My friends and I did the omekase and thought it was great! Drink menu was good and we had a bottle of sake as well. Good experience and I hope the space takes off!

Michael B.

Yelp
Modern design and unique food preparations were both delicious and interesting. Service was prompt and thoughtful including a wine suggestion. Maki was fresh and well conceived. We ordered slowly but still took a little home because we had to try just one more!
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
The owners of Wasabi have put their very best foot forward with this newest establishment. My wife and I dined here shortly after they opened and it did not disappoint. First of all, the dining room is impeccable. Everything is well lit, pristinely decorated and everything oozes class. The service was second to none. Our server had a top tier knowledge of not only their menu but what wine might go well with our selections. We did the omakase and Sasaki San made our taste buds sing again just as he did at Omakase Takeya before. I have not had a better sushi dinner in my life. We will be retuning soon and bringing guests to share in this gem!

dani f.

Yelp
this place has been a long time in the making and it was worth the wait. i have been a fan of sasaki san's sushi since it was on the menu at the old wasabi location and had some of the best meals of my life at omakase takeya. the fact that i can now get sushi of this caliber back in my old neighborhood again is a dream. the foie-gras tuna sushi is literally the best thing ive ever tasted and ill be back for it again soon.
