My friend was searching for a destination for her group birthday dinner, and she ideally wanted to find a spot that offered an Italian tasting menu. I was helping her research and came across Nonna Beppa Soho, which had been on my list to try. The chef's selected culinary journey was priced at $115 for 3 dishes and a dessert, which was perfectly acceptable for our crew.
The restaurant was pretty quiet on that evening, so we had the place largely to ourselves. We started with drinks, and I opted first for an Aperol Spritz, which was perfectly balanced. I later changed to a glass of the 2019 Marchesi Antinori Villa Antinori Bianco Toscana IGT from Tuscany, Italy. The white blend was mainly Trebbiano, with some Malvasia grapes incorporated. The heavenly wine was crisp, fruity, and floral; it was a spectacular blend that invigorated my senses! In addition to my excellent beverages, I sampled a friend's Old Fashioned, which had the perfect balance of sweetness and smokiness. We enjoyed sips of our drinks, first with fluffy bread, and then proceeding on to our meal.
Our initial bite was a tiny cheese puff topped with some type of cheese mousse, which was delightful. Then, our first real course was the Calamari alla Griglia, a light salad of a few greens that was topped with grilled calamari. The seafood rings were coated in a creamy, red pepper sauce that was tangy and delicious. Our next dish was a Spaghetti al Pomodoro that was topped with half a ball of burrata cheese. By incorporating the cold cheese into the warm pasta, it melted into the tomato sauce and made for a heavenly bite that was my favorite component of the meal. The pasta was followed by a pan-seared Mediterranean branzino fillet that had been lightly seasoned with Italian EVOO and herbs. While it looked plain upon its arrival at the table, it was extremely flavorful. The fish was served with a generous portion of sautéed baby spinach that was topped with butter and sprinkled Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Though the salty cheese took the spinach's taste up a notch, my spinach was cold, making it less appealing. The meal ended with a sweet treat, which was a warm, rich chocolate brownie. A scoop of soft, Mascarpone cream made for an interesting pairing for the cake, as opposed to traditional whipped cream. A sliced strawberry was included for some brightness.
My experience at Nonna Beppa Soho was enjoyable, but I thought the food and service both could have been better for the price.
