The 23 Best New Restaurants In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This Japanese handroll spot lives in the basement of Perilla Fare, complete with a glowing bar surrounded by mirrors and an electronic playlist that could fuel a Zara shopping spree. Though they’re booked out for weeks, it’s worth calling to try and grab a last-minute reservation for their nori-wrapped fatty tuna, baked scallop, or wagyu topped with uni that’s a fantastic surf and turf butter bomb. Noriko only has 20 seats, but they're perfect for a date night with a side of toro. Reservations are bookable up to three months in advance, though most spots are already taken. Where To Go On A Date Right Now - Chicago - The Infatuation

"We’ll be up front, this Japanese handroll restaurant hiding in Perilla Fare’s basement is already booked out for months. But if you give this West Loop spot a call, they might be able to squeeze you in—usually at 5pm and for only an hour. So while it’s not ideal for lingering or early-dinner haters, there are upsides. Noriko’s 20-seat space works well for something intimate without being too romantic, largely helped by an electronic playlist that doesn’t scream “marriage proposal.” And the handrolls like fatty tuna, spicy scallop, or buttery wagyu are all excellent. The hour-long time limit is also great if you’re catching a movie or concert after, or need to wrap things up when the person you’re with ends up having less personality than Siri. Reservations are bookable up to three months in advance, though most spots are already taken. But you might find success by calling Noriko to see if they can squeeze you in last minute today or in the next few days—this usually comes with the caveat of eating at 5pm and a one-hour time limit." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen

The Best New Restaurants in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"The folks at Perilla in River West have been hiding something in their basement. In February, they unveiled a sleek and sexy sushi bar that focuses on hand rolls. The two chefs — one is a Girl & the Goat alum — have packed a lot of quality in their offerings without falling for the sushi bro cliche. Get the edamame. They hit it with smoke which unlocks a new dimension of taste." - Ashok Selvam

Are These Chicago Restaurants Worth The Hype? - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Verdict: This West Loop spot will make “eating handrolls in a basement” your new favorite activity. Not long after opening, this handroll spot in the basement of Perilla Fare was already booked out for weeks. And for good reason: the handrolls are delicious. Spicy baked scallops, fatty tuna brushed with seasoned soy sauce, wagyu topped with uni that’s basically a surf and turf butter bomb—there are plenty of tasty nori-wrapped bites to get excited about. Noriko only seats 20, but it doesn’t feel small thanks to its walls of mirrors. Even when it’s packed and the clubby music sounds like you should be shopping for something with pleather, it’s easy to have a fun night out whether you’re there for a date or weekly office gossip. Reservations are bookable up to three months in advance, though most spots are already taken. But you might find success by calling Noriko to see if they can squeeze you in last minute today or in the next few days—this usually comes with the caveat of eating at 5pm and a one-hour time limit." - adrian kane, veda kilaru, john ringor, nick allen

This was an incredible experience. Tucked away you are met with kind and attentive service. Our server guided us through the experience. The food was - taken your breath away - amazing. Chef Lisa was warm, skilled, and precise. Every bite was a work of art. If you can snag a reservation do so and enjoy all that Noriko has to offer!

Google
Boyfriend surprised me on a date night to Noriko and we had a great time! Food was excellent and I was surprised by how full we were by the end of it. Would definitely recommend the California. I also stole a bite of his scallop dynamite and that I’d 100% order again. Also, we had the Tokyo Story and Puncha Matcha. Both so good - I’d even come back just for the Puncha Matcha. The space was intimate and perfect for a date night. It wasn’t stuffy as it still felt quite large due to the mirrors. Would 100% recommend Noriko!

Google
i had to book this 60 days out for a party of 3, but it was so worth it! the service was excellent, the atmosphere felt great, the bar was beautiful, and the food was delicious. note that noriko is in the basement of perilla fare, and you have to enter perilla fare to get to noriko (which was not obvious as the signage only mentioned perilla) each handroll felt very thoughtfully crafted, and tasted very balanced - no flavors in any of them felt like they dominated the entire roll. although there were very slight hints of fishiness in the pieces of fish that fell out of some rolls, this was not noticed when they were in the roll with the rest of the ingredients. it was very hard to pick a favorite, but i think i’d say the bluefin tuna akami roll was my favorite - the tuna in it was so soft. also notable: the california roll had real crab in it overall a dining experience i loved & would absolutely return for in the future (with some planning in advance). next time, i’d order the chefs set instead of the signature set - it’s only $12 more for not only an extra roll, but it includes 2 premium rolls and 3 classic rolls rather than just 4 classic rolls

Google
Noriko is hands down one of the best sushi spots in Chicago. Chef Billy is a true artist — every hand roll was unbelievably fresh, flavorful, and beautifully crafted. The rolls literally melted in my mouth, and the attention to detail in each bite was next level. Chef Billy made the experience feel personal and special, taking time to explain each roll and share his passion. The vibe is intimate, stylish, and welcoming. If you’re a sushi lover (or just love incredible food), do yourself a favor and visit Noriko. Chef Billy’s creations are unforgettable!

Google
Delicious hand rolls! Some of the freshest and most unique sushi I’ve had. This is really high quality, top tier sushi. The service is wonderful, and it has a very exclusive under ground lounge vibe. You have to go thru a different restaurant upstairs to get to the back stairwell down to this place. Great lofi music, but the cocktails were weak and the lichee martini was overly sweet. I highly recommend this place for a wonderful unique meal and I’m already looking forward to coming back. Oh and the California roll has large chunk crab meat that is the most tasty California roll I’ve ever had.

Google
Wow what a lovely treat this place was! You have to walk through the dining room of Perilla, and there is a staircase into the basement where Noriko is. We really enjoyed the lychee martinis, they are not too string and great subtle taste. One of my favorite dishes of the night was the hamachi poke. The fish was surrounded by this delicious savory jelly and we quite literally cleaned that plate. Could’ve eaten 20 of them! For handrolls you can either custom select options (which they recommended about 5 at $9-24 a piece) or select a pre-set menu. We opted for custom and the server gave us some recommendations. We tried two tuna handrolls, I particularly enjoyed the bluefin tuna toro because it had a delightful pickle wasabi on top. My favorite roll of the night was the uni handroll which had a generous serving of sweet light fresh uni on top. We also enjoyed the crab handroll, the wagyu truffle roll we also tried which was a hit. The spicy octopus roll had was super fresh and not at all chewy. We really enjoyed the food and atmosphere, the chefs would explain every roll to us as it was served. If I had to wish for something, it would probably be to have a slower pace! We were only at the counter for 45 minutes, for the price point I expected a lengthier experience. I’d be interested to see if they decreased the size of these rolls to a smaller bite so we could try more of the options and really savor the evening. And they don’t have a dessert menu just yet but I would love to try that in the future. All in all, delicious food and drinks! Attentive service and I found it easy to talk with my sister but not overhear others conversations.

Google
Incredible new spot! I had to book one month in advance to get this reservation, so I was hoping it would be worth it. It was. The food was delicious—every hand roll had a perfect bite that was balanced and fresh and crisp! My favorites were the bluefin tuna toro, the spicy tuna, and the yellowtail roll. The appetizers were also spot on. The seaweed salad had a variety of different fresh seaweeds and was finished with a tangy sauce. We also enjoyed the smoked butter edamame with their house made furikake. It was both rich, salty, and sophisticated! My bf says he would “buy a bag” of the furikake. Anyway, this place was not only delicious, but the ambience was on point—intimate, welcoming, and modern. Chefs and servers were friendly and warm. S/o to Chef Michael!! We will be back and this is now one of my (and our) top places in Chicago!! ❤️

Google
Found my new favorite sushi spot - incredible quality, a fair price, and an approachable but beautiful atmosphere. Not only does the food taste amazing, but watching the rolls be created in front of you makes for a fun experience. Our server Lily was the perfect level of attentive. Highly recommend the chips & edamame hummus, California roll, and warm crab roll. But everything on the menu tasted great. Excited to come back and try more.

Yelp
This new handroll spot goes hard with the sexy vibes and spectacular bites. I enjoyed the salon lox crudo and their blue fin tuna handroll. I look forward to checking out more the menu when I visit again.

Yelp
Incredible food, ambiance, and staff. Absolutely delicious hand rolls- the tuna was our favorite. Some of the freshest fish I've had in Chicago AND affordable for the quality and experience. Can't wait to revisit.

Yelp
Dining at Noriko was a special experience, with every detail feeling thoughtfully done. Some of our favorites were the nori chips with dip, the spicy bluefin tuna handroll, and the matcha cocktail. The open kitchen seating made it even more fun, letting us watch the chefs prepare hand rolls (which have been my favorite hand rolls in Chicago!). Overall a great time and looking forward to returning!

Yelp
Located under Perilla Fare in the west loop, Noriko is Chicago's hottest, new restaurant opening (just opened Feb 5th) and that comes with reservations being VERY hard to get! Why? Well, Noriko only has 20 SEATS and the food and service are great! The space is very intimate and cozy..... and EACH PERSON has a front seat view of the chef action! I was in heaven - the ingredients are FRESH and you'd be surprised at what is made in house. A good example is their SOY SAUCE - homemade. Unbelievable! The edamame hummus dip and nori chips wowed me as an opening appetizer and the rolls were excellent. The cuts of meat are so fresh and prepared so well, it melts in your mouth like butter. The hand rolls are expertly made and taste phenomenal! I highly recommend the nori chips and dip, the crab motoyaki, uni, bluefin tuna toro.... Okay EVERYTHING! And for drinks the Tokyo Story and Lychee Martini are must try's! If you can snag a reservation here, do it!!! It's beyond worth it

Yelp
Had a great experience celebrating Valentine's Day last night at Noriko. The ambience was perfect- cozy and intimate and had some great music. The service was great as well. Loved the nori chips and hummus! It was bursting with flavor! The hand rolls were delicious! My favorite was the bay scallop dynamite and the spicy ora king salmon. Would love to go back!

Yelp
Tucked away in the basement level of Perilla, this handroll restaurant has a very unassuming entrance...BUT the moment you unveil the curtains at the end of the staircase, you're hit with a stunning view. The interior is beautiful - ambient lighting and the mirrors that line the wall make the space feel so spacious yet intimate. No matter what seat you're at, you have a great view. Re: dress code, you'd be fine wearing something more going out-y or a sweater and jeans. Ok now to the food. In order of my favorites, here's the must get: -crab motoyaki (the crunchy roe and the melt in your mouth crab is the perfect bite) -bluefin tuna poke (balanced, good amount of tuna on top) -nori chips and dip (taste was very reminiscent of other delicious asian spots - a must) -scallop dynamite (was the most "saucy" - not too overpowering though) TLDR: You might as well get the chefs handroll set to be the most economical and get the most selection. Then also order the nori chips and dip. You're welcome. Meh notes: -we had to wait a bit before getting seared with a reservation, so it makes sense to wait upstairs at the bar (can see how bookings can be tight if a table lingers a bit) -we placed another order of crab, and it did take a hot moment, so our stomach def expanded a ton during the waiting period (If you haven't had a hand roll before, be warned that you will initially not feel full after eating, BUT the rice expands and then you'll be extra full hahaha. *the more you know*) This place is spectacular and we will 10000% be back!!

Yelp
Everything was so incredible. I expected a couple of bumps only being open for a couple of days but omg I cannot wait to go back ASAP! The service was kind and attentive but also wasn't overwhelming. The space was gorgeous and intimate and so cool. The food is absolutely delicious. The fish was so fresh and the portions were generous at a very fair pair. I got the chef's handroll set and truly loved every one. Would get them all again. My favorite was the bluefin tuna toro tho. Utterly obsessed!

Conik R.

Yelp
PHENOMENAL! The Fish was so fresh, I ate slow for once in my life to ensure I enjoyed every bite! The atmosphere was intimate yet inviting! I loved the personal care provided by the staff. The best part?! I didn't feel bloated. I left feeling satisfied & full, but didn't feel gross. I felt like I eat a healthy clean meal. 10/10 will be back. P.S. If you are reading this, don't make a reservation so I can go more often

Yelp
If you've had handrolls in either LA or NYC you know top tier handrolls are made w warm rice, and simple recipes. The handrolls here were mid to ok at best. We got the chefs options, which was 5 rolls which were just ok. Not sure I'll be back. Pricy for the quality of being just ok. If they didn't rice warm might be a different experience.

Yelp
Food was great (my favorite were the crab and tuna hand rolls) and the old fashioned is one of the best I've ever had (they do a unique take with a buttery finish). Love the cozy speakeasy vibe as well - definitely will be back!!

Yelp
Noriko Handroll Bar is a spot we'll be coming back to--a lot. Everything about it hits just right, from the food to the vibe to the price. First, the nori chips. Just order them. You won't expect them to be as good as they are, and then suddenly, you're addicted. The crudos were a highlight. We started with the Hamachi Poke, which was super interesting with the yuzu jelly--bright, fresh, and a little unexpected. We liked it so much that we decided to order another and went with the Benitoro Lox. Richer, with cream cheese, everything seasoning, and lox--it's got that familiar, comforting breakfast flavor but in a totally different format. Fun and delicious. On to the handrolls--the premium rolls are phenomenal, especially the crab and uni (which was incredibly fresh). But the classics hold their own too. The Bluefin, California, and Spicy Tuna are all must-orders. If you're looking for a little meat to break up all the incredible seafood, the Pork Belly is a solid move. It's a nice small plate of juicy, flavorful slices--rich, tender, and a great contrast to the fresh fish. Definitely worth adding to the lineup. The service and ambiance are what set Noriko apart. Located in the basement of Perilla Faire (West Loop), the space has an intimate, underground feel that adds to the experience. Most handroll bars feel cramped, have second-rate service, or skimp on plating--not here. The vibe is polished but relaxed, the service is on point, and it all ties together for a great night out. And as far as handroll bars go, it's easily the largest in the city. A fantastic way to spend an evening over a very reasonably priced meal. This Perilla Restaurant Group seems to have really found its stride--second new opening in a year? With Perilla Steak now quickly becoming a favorite for those who know, and Faire, their casual OG spot for great small plates and meats, it's clear they've figured out how to deliver a great night out. Distinct authors of their own take on what that means in Chicago--food, drinks, vibe, service--all super dialed in.
