Detroit’s Best New Brunch Spots Right Now

"Norm’s Diner landed on the city’s east side from the creative minds of Elise Gallant and Danielle Norman. The casual and well-designed space features twists on diner breakfast staples like biscuits and chorizo gravy; a lox plate with rye toast and onion schmear; or for lunch, a crispy chicken cutlet with green goddess dressing; or a turkey club with an herby mayo spread and bacon from Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats. To drink, sodas, iced tea, and lemonade are available, as is drip coffee, orange juice, and a selection of malts and shakes. Be warned, Norm’s gets quite a bit of foot traffic, so when you arrive, leave your number with the host to be added to the waitlist, take a stroll around the block, and maybe do some window shopping, and your table will be ready before you know it." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
Loved this place! Very small but service was great. All of the staff were super friendly and helpful. It was a very cute and aesthetic and welcoming environment, overall felt super inclusive!! There were so many good options on the menu, it was hard to choose! I love the way they took classic diner staples and elevated them! It really made the experience feel more special and exciting while still being familiar.

Google
Norms is such a special addition to the neighborhood it is exactly what we needed! The food is simple and incredible. It has all your favorites from a typical diner but so much better! Norms has quickly become the spot to be and it’s so fun to see all your neighbors enjoying breakfast or lunch! If you haven’t been yet what are you doing?! Get your butt over there get a shake, fries and a Cobb salad you will not regret it!

Google
Jackpot! I love when I find a place like this: mom and pop with everything made from scratch. It’s obvious that’s so much care is taken in every detail of food preparation. Delicious!

My girlfriend & I try to make it to Norm’s every time I’m in town. Everyone here is so sweet and the food is 10/10! Love seeing all the effort they’ve put in to creating a comfy atmosphere that doesn’t take itself too seriously! Ps the sausage gravy is out of this world! 🫡

Google
The best breakfast I have ever had. Traveled the US for years... Omg. You must try.

Google
Really enjoyed my breakfast here and looking forward to coming back. Atmosphere inside was small, but gave cozy neighborhood diner vibes with small floral decorations adorning the tables. I got the lox plate with a side of the fries (I asked for a side of mayo- it appeared to be housemade with some fresh herbs in it, nice surprise), my partner got the breakfast special, and everything turned out delicious. It was a busy morning, but service was not delayed and staff were super friendly and attentive. We were sitting at the bar rail and could see that everything coming out of the window looked neat and uniform on the plate. No complaints.

Google
The. Best. Bacon. This is the diner I’d want to spend every morning in. Their staff is kind but not too in your business- the food is GREAT- the coffee keeps coming- I’m happy here. Wish I didn’t live 40 minutes away!

Google
This was our first visit to Norm’s and we will 1000% be returning. The interior was so cute. The service was perfect. The food, especially the egg sandwich with spicy pimento, was unbelievable. We love this place. So happy they joined the neighborhood!

Yelp
This is such a cute spot! I absolutely loved the diner vibes but the food was way better than anything I've ever had a diner - I would say this is a bit of an upscale diner. I had the BLT and I am still dreaming about it. It was perfect. My boyfriend had the chorizo biscuits and gravy which wasn't bad but we probably wouldn't get that again. The staff was very friendly - we did come on a Sunday and it was super packed and had to wait for about an hour. We ended up walking around and grabbing some coffee while we waited. I WILL BE COMING BACK FOR THE BLT

Yelp
I'm thankful to finally have a restaurant in the West Village with regular operating hours. Most restaurants around West Village have odd hours or are only open in the evening. For that reason alone, Norm's has quickly become a staple for breakfast and lunch. I find myself coming here a lot to meet people for lunch because there aren't many other options in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre and overpriced and has gotten worse since it opened several months ago. For example, in December, I ordered the Caesar Salad with Crispy Chicken, and it was decent, with the same chicken used in the Crispy Chicken Cutlet entrée. Several months later, in February, I ordered the same thing and was given lower-quality chicken different from what was served in the Crispy Chicken Cutlet entrée. In addition, the sodium content was super high for both my salad and the side of fries I shared with my friend. I could not believe the amount of salt in both dishes. I don't even know how or why there would be so much salt in a Caesar Salad. I haven't had the Crispy Chicken Cutlet since December so I wonder if that has changed as well. The Two Eggs Breakfast is okay but you can get a better and bigger breakfast at nearby Coney Islands. It only comes with one sausage patty and two little potatoes that aren't crispy as the menu claims.

Yelp
Very cute. The 2-egg breakfast is good. The breakfast potatoes are little pillows of yumminess. The garlic schmear would be great on a bagel.

Yelp
Norm's opened recently in my neighborhood, but it has taken a min to get in and sample the fare. This is a charming brunch location. The service was great and fast. We had just ordered and our food arrived, and the food was delicious.

Yelp
We went to pick up pies for Easter at Sister Pie right down the street so took advantage of the close Proximity to try out Norm's Diner. I wanted to try it before I took a larger group I am scheduled to bring there in May. It's such a cute little neighborhood spot, just fell in love with the atmosphere, location and the food was really good as well. I had the yogurt bowl and the egg McMuffin special and my husband had the 2 egg breakfast. The yogurt bowl was unique and very filling. Could only eat part of it but the rest travelled well. It was really creamy yogurt mixed with turmeric with berries and granola on top. The sandwich was a special of the day and was their version of an egg McMuffin. It had sausage, scrambled eggs, cheese and hash browns and covered with hot honey. I got it without hash browns because I'm not a fan of them. The hot honey on top was the ingredient that made me order that don't did not disappoint. A little messy but worth it. My husband go the 2 eggs scrambled (served with cheese), bacon and toast. Everything was cooked to perfection and came on a timely basis even though they were super busy. I'm excited to go back just hoping they have room for my larger group.

Yelp
Tried this place a few weeks ago and had to wait over and hour and was hoping it would be worth it. Really like the area of Indian village. The place is on the smaller side but really liked the club sandwich. The bread was fresh and so soft and a good amount of food. The BLT was just ok, the tomato wasn't really fresh and had higher hopes but would go back and try other stuff.

Yelp
Great new diner in west village. We put our name on the list about an hour before being seated. This Diner is small so prepare for a wait in the weekend brunch hours. We got the fresh soup, fries and a shake. Everything was absolutely delicious and they also accommodated our baby twin girls. I would recommend stopping by if not for the delicious food, for the amazing shakes. Casual diner ambiance it's a perfect relaxing comfort meal. We will be back!

Yelp
Such a cute new spot in the neighborhood! Classic diner vibes with delicious staples. You HAVE to get a malt (they are garnished with fries!)!! I ordered Two Eggs and it was a great price for the meal. The sausage was sweet and the potatoes come with a yummy sauce. Perfect blend of sweet and savory!

Yelp
Hallelujah! A diner in West Village. I went to Norm's on opening day and had the best turkey club with heirloom tomatoes and herby mayonnaise. My friend had the pancakes and a malt. I'm telling you, this place could be half as good and it would still be great. I almost went back today but I "you have food here"-ed myself and what was that food? The other half of my turkey club! Still delicious cold, sitting two days in the fridge. They are open 8am to 4pm, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I know it's too much to wish that they were open 24/7, one thing I miss about my previous city. But that's one thing I miss among a million I do not miss, so I'll be grateful for a diner that's open 8/5. Service was very friendly and good. What I noticed was how chill and efficient it was for an opening day, food was coming out at a good pace, coffee and water was refilled, they checked in on as after we got our food and again about midway in. I also really love the design and decor: it's very thoughtful without being overwrought. It's beautiful and bright inside with the large windows overlooking Agnes Street. I love the creme and burgundy color scheme, and the counter and the stools (nice, plush stools, not the evil metal ones!), purse hooks. It gives a 50s diner vibe with a sleek Swedish aesthetic. In addition to the hot food they also have a cooler with some grab and go things. If you're planning on coming, use their wait-list app which is on their website and Instagram. Street parking is free but can be sparse at times. I feel like a lot of people had walked there so we were able to find parking pretty close. There are bike racks in front of Metropolitan if that's your preferred mode of transportation. Welcome to the neighborhood, Norm's!

Yelp
I need another run at Norms, I feel like. I want to love it but I wasn't in love after my first visit. Had to have the biscuits and gravy bc duhhh. It left me wanting a bit more. I was a bit underwhelmed by the turmeric-heavy yogurt bowl and mushy smashed brekky potatoes. The wait on a Sunday for 4 people? Criminal. Thank god our server was nice and the homey small town vibe was fully present. I'll be back to play sooner than later so I fully expect to update my review.

Yelp
Love love love the food here!!! Amazing! Just be prepared that the very basic diner paper menu in front of you doesn't actually describe some of the dishes you may receive- Ex., the $10 yogurt bowl sounds fairly average: MI honey, house granola, berries - and now look at my pic. The yogurt is a beautiful yellow/orange hue (from tumeric) and a good bit of kick- I absolutely loved it and will try to recreate it again home but others might be surprised that it's not the plain yogurt they were expecting Similarly, the "Texas toast" on the $14 BLT is actually just toast (see pic) so again, expectations might go awry The $5 Breakfast Potatoes are just stunning- I could order multiples! It's a new place that this neighborhood truly needs with fabulous food! From generations of restaurant family, I promise you they'll make changes/streamline as they settle in- they're highly overstaffed and they'll figure out how to cut some costs as they go but for now, get in there and try this food! More than likely you'll have a wait so put your name on the list (dedicated hostess for approx 35 max) and she'll send a text when your table is ready (Red Hook is next door so get a coffee/tea there and hang out) Service is phenomenal - very friendly ppl and many of them

Yelp
A busy place with easy accessibility into the restaurant. Did not check bathrooms so unsure. Service was friendly and efficient. The food was delivered as it was made so had crispy breakfast pot Oakes while I waited for the BLT. Not mad about it. Those breakfast potatoes are unique and super delicious. Their bacon and heirloom tomatoes made this an awesome BLT as well. Will be back to try the pancakes we saw delivered nearby!!

Yelp
This place rules. All you can drink coffee, great prices, cute ambiance and nice people. The lox plate was unreal! This neighborhood needed a chill joint for breakfast and lunch. I hear it gets busy, but during the week, you can easily snag a table!
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best diners around!! Great staff, food and the vibe is super fun! Try any of the specials! The crispy cutlet is Amazing!

Yelp
A nice addition to a cozy neighborhood. Norm's isn't big, but the service is fast and the food is no frills but solid. The pancakes were tasty and hot, the two egg breakfast was flavorful and hearty. The line on a Sunday morning wasn't short, but the two of us were seated in about half an hour. Enjoy a cup of coffee at Red Hook or take a stroll around Indian Village while you wait.
google avatar

Andy V.

Yelp
The biscuits and gravy were excellent. The breakfast sandwich was also really good. The vibe is awesome.
google avatar

Angie B.

Yelp
Loved everything about the ambience, the food and the service. They'd only been open for a week or two so I'm not rating lower for having to wait a while into our meals for coffee refills. To some diners this is very important. My friend's fried potatoes were amazing and her food allergies and dietary needs were addressed and met. We hope Norm's is successful and long lasting!

Yelp
Really cute Breakfast and Lunch spot in West Village! The Club sandwich was huge, and the Malted was really good.

LaWayne W.

Yelp
With Norms Diner being added to the West Village area it's such a great addition to the neighborhood! The inside is small so it definitely was packed. I arrived around 12 noon I was able to get a seat at the counter. During peak brunch & lunch hours it gets very busy so prepare for a wait when going. I ordered an Arnold Palmer to drink which was refreshing. For my food I got the yogurt bowl to start the granola added such a perfect crunch to the sweetness of the berries which balanced it out very well. I ended off with the Crispy Chicken Cutlet which was fried to perfection and was so tender. It paired well with the green goddess dressing on the bottom of it I like that is was topped with that frisée salad really tied it al together. The staff was friendly & responsive; the space was well kept and clean. If you like a nice and causal breakfast or brunch spot, Norms Diner is definitely the place you want to visit !
google avatar

Catherine S.

Yelp
Was really excited to try Norm's, but after two visits, I think it's overhyped. Pretty expensive for breakfast food and they still need to work on their consistency. Ordered over-easy eggs and they came over-hard. Heard great things about the pancakes, but mine were overcooked/dry. Came a second time to try lunch. I'm a ceasar salad LOVER, and theirs was a letdown. Norm's is in a great spot and filling a gap in West Village, but unfortunately, I will not be a regular (and I wanted to be!)
google avatar

Boris B.

Yelp
We had a really good breakfast at Norm's and it's great to have such a nice cafe/diner in this neighborhood (West Village, adjacent to Indian Village). The food is high quality and the coffee is good. Service was decent. I will be back, but I think they should expand the menu a bit and offer longer hours.
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
Loved it! Charming and tasty. Popped in on a snowy winter weekend and was warmed up immediately. Menu is small, but well done. They have diner standards but with a twist--e.g., breakfast potatoes but with a garlic schmear ;) Friendly service and in a great location in the West Village. Winner, winner
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
Norm's dinner is such a cute place,a fantastic addition to West village. The menu is simple sticking to classic diner favorites. The soup djour was dill pickle and it was out of this world delicious. The turkey club was perfection. Also ordered the chicken cutlet which was so perfectly cooked crispy, juicy with such a bright fresh sauce and greens accompaniment. The staff was very friendly and attentive prompt with service. It is such a lovely place to grab a bite. The space is small so be prepared to wait if going during peak times. I can not wait to come back to try more!
google avatar

Yelp
Had our first experience at Norm's this week. The food was great even though the menu is very small. I had the two-egg breakfast while my wife had the biscuits and gravy. Both were tremendous. Can't wait to try them again!

Det F.

Yelp
As neighborhood residents, my family was ecstatic about having a new breakfast/lunch restaurant opening! We are big foodies and Norms came with much promise to fulfill the neighborhood demand; however, we've been pretty disappointed with the service so far. The first time visiting for lunch, I was with my two young children. We were told there was a 30 minute wait so we strolled the block while we waited. After 45 minutes, I went back inside to inquire about the remaining wait time. Note - There was another party of 3 adults also waiting to be seated. The hostess advised that she had two parties leaving and both of our tables would be ready shortly. After 5 minutes, those two parties left. The adult party of 3 was first asked if they preferred a table or the window bar, and they chose the table. Me and my two young children were taken to the window bar and asked "would you like to sit here or wait for the next table?" Really?! So, there were two parties of 3, both up to be seated, and you ask the adults which seating they wanted and left the bar to the party with small children?? Make it make sense. Oh well - we found a way to sit there and eat while I got up every 5 minutes to check on my small child sitting at the end of the bar. The next time we went - on a Sunday - at 3pm. Yelp and Norm's posted open times read that they close at 4pm. We were quickly turned away at the door advising that they weren't taking anymore walk-ins. We called to inquire about seating before arriving and they do not answer calls, so we simply went. It's not like they take reservations. Just to learn that they stop accepting guests an hour before closing?? Norm's is great for the neighborhood but doesn't seem quite ready to meet the demand. I'm hoping that things improve with time because the location and area demand is prime.

Jeanne C.

Yelp
Another delicious meal! The onion dip and chips is a must . Make sure to get the eggnog cheese slice it was outstanding.

Stephen A.

Yelp
Excellent food and great service! This place has such an amazing vibe. It really was a lot of fun.

Caleb D.

Yelp
I got the steak and eggs special and it was really a generous amount of flank steak. The breakfast potato's come with this garlic cream cheese which was lovely. All the theming was adorable and my coffee was never empty. I had this for breakfast, I want to go back for lunch the same day. Welcome to the neighborhood!
