The 38 Essential Vancouver Restaurants

"The casual wine bar sister to the multi-award-winning Published on Main began as a pop-up but is now firmly one of the city’s favorite spots, complete with a summery patio, on East 6th. The gorgeous room plays host to chef de cuisine Justin Golangco’s menu, which wanders from pan-European to pan-Asian; aonori, caperberries, and bruschetta all feature at various points. Alongside are an ever-changing array of low-intervention wines, amari, cocktails, and vermouth, all procured by wine lead Stephanie Alishan (formerly of London’s Super 8 Restaurant group)." - Nikki Bayley

Bar Susu

"Note: This restaurant is temporarily closed.Bar Susu offers a concise range of well-prepared, creative dishes served in a laid-back setting that fashions itself as a wine bar focused on natural pours. The room sports a comfortable, vintage vibe with dark wood plank flooring, forest green walls and a touch of exposed red brick.Natural wines star, while clever cocktails feature fortified/aromatised wines, like the amaro with house-made kola syrup. The bold cooking here stands up to the beverage selection in compositions like fillets of torched mackerel resting in gem lettuce dabbed with emulsified bagna cauda; and smoked lamb belly slicked with warmly spiced jus and plated with minted grains and labneh. Pavlova in a pool of chicory-root crème anglaise is a delightful dessert." - Michelin Inspector

The 24 Best Restaurants & Hotels In Vancouver - Vancouver - The Infatuation

"Bar Susu is what a great natural wine bar should be. There’s a borderline unreadable cursive chalkboard menu of wines by the glass and knowledgeable sommeliers who bring you interesting grape varietals and bottles, like a chilled Gamay pét-nat. The X factor here is the wildly delicious food, though, with combinations that might not make sense at first glance but end up being delicious. We’re talking about things like smoked trout with dill pickle consommé and wasabi ice cream or duck liver parfait donuts with a PB&J twist. Come here if you have something to celebrate, throw skepticism to the wind, and surrender to all these dishes in either a la carte or family-style tasting menu form. We are a party of 4 and tried the chef's menu for dinner. There were 3 appetizers, 3 main courses, and 1 dessert. It's served family style. Everyone liked the octopus dish because it was very well done and soft. However, we found all the food a bit too salty, except for the dessert. Portion was good for 4 people.

Google
I’ve always been a fan of Bar Susu, and this is their “new” location after a fire at their old one. Apparently it’s only temporary as they’ll be heading back once the place is done with renovations. Anyway, the food is just as good as I remembered it to be and their drinks are delicious. I definitely like the family sharing style tapas as we get to try a bit of everything. Definitely liked the beef tartare a lot and the cheese puffs. Definitely recommend coming out here with a groups so you can maximize the menu. It’s a good spot for a night out and a treat for yourself.

Google
Great food and wine pairing recommendations! The menu also changes frequently, allowing diners to enjoy a different experience involving new dishes every few months. This place can get busy, so make a reservation at least a week in advance if you want to have a table!

Google
We sat at the bar, our host was the lady with short hair. She was great! Great recommendations on wines and food, and very good chat. The wines were all on point, we liked it that it wasn’t so meat-focused, with nice fish and vegetables too. The whole ambience was great with other staff too being very friendly. It was a great night out.

Google
Incredible natural wines, amazing service (thanks Gavin!) great vibe and the food was outstanding as well! Best restaurant experience I’ve had in Vancouver in a long time. Also the desserts are a must try, along with the zucchini and the trout. Everything was great but those 3 were show stoppers. Also fairly priced for what you get. Could not recommend more highly.

Google
Disappointed on the food, but wine, service and atmosphere were excellent. Really beautiful interior and friendly staff. I would honestly recommend coming here after you have eaten something already. Ordered half of the items on the menu, lamb belly was delicious other than that, food was average and it’s pricey considering the portion. Staff were attentive and friendly, we enjoyed the dining experience. Wine recommended by the staff was great. I would come back but definitely not for dinner but the wine only.

Google
Good but not great. Food was underwhelming, but staff was friendly and enthusiastic. Unfortunately though we were left alone for quite sometime after our plates had been cleared at the end of the meal which made the difference on the quality of service and enjoying an aperitif to close out the evening. I asked for wine pairings with two of my mains. First glass was red and when the 2nd glass (white) came to the table the server poured it into the red wine glass (with a sip of red still in the glass). $65 per person for the chefs selection which is decent value for the amount of food you do get. Ambiance was nice.

Google
I didn‘t know where to set my expectation. When I saw the name, I thought it is a wine bar with good food. While their website only shows you the food with a tasting menu, I start to think it is a restaurant with a great bar selection. So we booked with the tasting menu. First of all, the servers are amazing thought the evening. There are some very interesting and adventurous cocktails. We had the cocktail and mocktail. They did not disappoint. Now the food is the roller coaster ride. By reading the menu, almost nothing is on the regular menu. I was hoping the chef will bring us on a journey on what the team would love to show. 2 out of 3 items of the snacks are quite sour. I can tolerate sour well and still think it was overpower. The bread was nice to clean the palate from all the sourness. Then the tartare was sour. Salad dressing is sour (like most salad). The butter sauce on the fish dish is sour and even the pork had citrus salt on it. All of a sudden the passion fruit mocktail was the the only thing which was not sour in the meal. If each plate was served individually, there may not be too much of a problem. Now the tartness overrided everything when they are all put together on a tasting menu. There wasn’t much spectrum on the taste profile; the sourness was similar between dishes as well. I even told the server that I couldn’t tell the difference between the plates anymore after the fish dish because my tongue was numb. Maybe it is better with a wine pairing? Although I don’t think there is a lot of wine which pairs well with the sourness. If it is designed to go well with wine, I would expect the tasting menu would have one dish with light-intensity meat, one with bold flavoure, and one with a little fat. Thank goodness the dessert was not sour. It was delicious. Bar Susu. You have potential, but more work on designing the menu is needed.

Yelp
I only tried one drink here. My partner treated me to a London Fog and it was delicious--I can't complain! It had a good amount of tea flavour and it wasn't too milky. The service was quick, but the table we sat at was slightly dirty. I had to clean it myself a little. Ambiance is really quiet and casual. Lots of space for you to enjoy your drink, read, do work, etc.

Yelp
A cute cafe on Main Street. Place looked bustling so I checked it out. The food I tried wasn't to my taste but wouldn't mind coming back for their coffee. Service was quite slow, but they did bring my coffee to the table since I had checked up to them twice about it. Moon Pie ($5) 5/10 Got this because the colour was interesting. The way it was explained to me was that this dish resembles cake with icing. Honestly I thought it tasted like dorayaki. Can't really taste the ube flavour and it was way too sweet. Pour Over ($6.5) 9/10 One of the better pourover I've had in Vancouver. Mine was Ethiopean beans, which I tend to prefer anyway. Notes were floral and light, perfect amount of balance in a cup. Took a while for them to prepare though.

Yelp
First time checking out this cafe! I came here with my partner on a Sunday afternoon as a treat. I enjoyed how the space felt very modern and clean, with minimal noise. It was a lot bigger inside than I thought, with lots of seating and table areas. Service was very quick and to-the-point, which felt refreshing somehow. I liked the open concept and low counter setup of where drinks were made and served. It felt inviting, in a way. My partner ordered a London Fog, and I got a Jasmine tea. The London Fog was SO delicious! The flavour of the tea was strong, and it was just the right amount of sweetness to bring out the drink. The milk wasn't too foamy, and everything balanced out very well. The Jasmine tea was good as well. Not too much to comment on, since it was leaves put in a teabag and steeped in hot water... but I do enjoy jasmine tea a lot! I even asked for a refill of my hot water cup so I could do a 2nd steep. (Didn't get pictures this time around, but take my word(s) for it!)

Yelp
Hot off the heels of Michelin winning sister restaurant-Published on Main, Nevella is a dabble in the lucrative world of coffee, bakery and brunch. Yes it is a tad ambitious. It is a self service joint that suggests a 25% tip on their payment splash screen. Good lord as if high inflation is not enough. The place is "chic" and well populated by eager fomoed gen Zers. Space is generously laid out, more circulation than seating. A retro vibe is noted here. We had couple of Americanos- decaf and regular and their in-house baked marzipan croissant and chocolate hazelnut cookie. The Americanos are ok but tiny and expensive. The baked goods are shockingly mediocre to terrible. Slightly better than Walmart baked goods same as Safeway's. Croissant has the texture of bread, lacking any sort of buttery flakiness. The cookie was dry and crumbly, kind of similar to large conglomerate cookie brands found at Walmart for 1/20th of the cost. Frankly if you have fomo, then check them out, otherwise skip it. Won't be back.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere. Good coffee. Delicious cookies. Delightful alcoholic selection. I enjoyed my pumpkin spice latte.

Yelp
Cozy seating. I like the set up and decor but our group collectively agreed drinks and food were just fine. My muffin and iced mocha came to just under $13. The drink was average at best although I really enjoyed the jalapeno cheddar - light fritatta-esque - muffin. The breakfast sandwiches were uninspired and dull. The coffees read as intriguing but tasted eh.

Yelp
We came on a Saturday and it wasn't too full inside. Lots of space to sit. I got a flat white. The flavour of the beans was good and fragrant. Milk was creamy. Fruity scent. Would come back to try some of their other drinks and to try the food

Yelp
This place was VERY busy on the weekend so we didn't bother trying to sit in to get a soup. We ended up decided to go with a coffee (flat white) and a baked good (cruffin) to go instead. Because it was so busy, we found trying to order quite chaotic and they actually mixed up our baked good a few times - the first time giving us the wrong thing and then the second time giving us a second cruffin as they thought we hadn't gotten ours yet. We found the cruffin to be a bit dry and the coffee to be okay. Given the number of people there, brunch might be where it is at instead.

Yelp
Food: 3/5 Service: 2/5 Ambiance: 4/5 I was super excited when this spot opened up in mount pleasant and really wanted to try it! Sadly it left a lot to be desired. I went on a Sunday morning just to grab a loaf of bread to go - when you walk in you're greeted by a host since they've decided to make the place like a full-service restaurant (where your seat is assigned and they bring your food/clear your table) rather than a traditional cafe. Since I was just getting the bread to go he asked me to proceed to the counter. I was met with someone who came off disinterested at best (borderline rude), and when I asked if the sourdough loaves were ready for sale she said "I don't know" before deciding she should maybe ask the back. Once she confirmed they were ready, she asked what flavour I wanted. When I asked to get some more info about what went in the country loaf vs. the feature loaf she once again replied "I don't know", this time not bothering to ask the back. I chose the country loaf and was asked to wait while she got it for me. While I was waiting it became pretty clear that the staff were really disorganized which was odd since Novella has been open for some time now. The sourdough was warm and fresh when I got it which was amazing but it turned out to be just okay, I've had better bread within a 5 min walk of here at a lower price tag (the loaf came to just under $10) Between the crazy high prices (I think small breakfast sandwiches are sold around $17) and lacklustre service, I probably won't be back anytime soon which is a shame because the space is beautiful

Yelp
FIRST WELL-PULLED ESPRESSO SHOT I HAD ON MAIN, THANK YOUUUU. I knew I was in luck when I saw the espresso bar setup. The person who rang us up was enthusiastic and kind, and I had a feeling that the barista knew what was up. Sure enough, a nicely presented (and fairly priced) espresso, sparkling water on the side. Gorgeous mouthfeel, balanced as hell, delightful finish. And in a Notneutral glass? Y'ALL. The espresso is a custom blend by local roaster House of Funk, offered for purchase in a reusable tin. Coffee snobs unite here!

Yelp
What is in that healing broth?!? It was DELICIOUS. I was visiting from California and getting a tattoo ceremony down the street. I got the burdock healing broth beforehand and it was soo nourishing, so flavorful, so rich...which was sooo surprising because burdock does NOT usually have that flavor for me. What's the secret!!!!!!

Yelp
One of the rare few coffee shops with great coffee but even better food. This place and Moving Coffee in Richmond serve the best coffee.
google avatar

Pylin C.

Yelp
Beautiful decor, super friendly and nice staff, yummy food and baked goods, free wifi (if your Mac actually connects to it ), water station, multiple seating options, and vibes where they're not trying to kick you out but actually encourage you to stay and enjoy and clears your table for you = winning cafe all around! (Only thing is, I don't drink coffee and they have only two tea options, but I'll take it!)

Yelp
From the restaurant group that made Published on Main, this modern cafe is a more casual but elevated spot along Main st. There are some seats to do work and table service for brunch. The drink selection is your very typical cafe menu but the food is what sets them apart!

Jeff T.

Yelp
Not the nicest people. Too many places on Main Street to go to. Don't need to go somewhere where you made to feel like crap!
