"At this point in the game, we know what to look for when first entering a restaurant. The vibe, the scene, and what occasions it’s actually good for. Can we take our parents here? Or a hot date? Is it inappropriate to get drunk here with our roommate? And how many people at the bar do we want to sleep with? These details are crucial, both for us and for you. But one thing that generally doesn’t stick out? The smell. Because as a general rule, every restaurant should smell good. If it doesn’t, double-check your vaccines and run. But walking into Odys and Penelope for the first time, good smells are taken to a whole other level. There you are staring at a two-story stack of wood, each piece slowly being fed into the gigantic ovens cooking up every piece of meat in the place. It’s a beautiful thing. Inhaling the wafts coming from Odys and Penelope’s open kitchen is like being tongue-kissed by Mother Earth herself. No doubt about it, this is the best smelling restaurant in Los Angeles. photo credit: Holly Liss Of course, that means nothing if the food isn’t any good. But we’re here to tell you Odys and Penelope delivers on its smells. The menu reads pretty traditional - you’ve got your branzino, your tri-tip, and your pappardelle all within arms’ reach. And you want that. Who needs to be eating uni reduction next to a stack of chopped wood anyways? This is upscale American comfort food of the best variety. And the overall vibe reflects that. Once our olfactory sense came back to Earth, we realized this is a place we would easily take our parents or a hot date. You probably don’t want to get hammered with your roommate here, but a couple glasses of wine with dinner is never a bad thing. Odys and Penelope is classy, but comfortable. It’s like walking into your childhood home, if you grew up in a retrofitted cow barn in the Rocky Mountains. We don’t know your life. But we do know that Odys and Penelope is as solid a restaurant as you’ll find in LA. It’s comforting but elegant, with a menu that’s as accessible as it is excellent. And that smells like a winning recipe to us. Food Rundown Creamy Cauliflower Does it get more comfort-laden than this? The creamy cauliflower is excellent and the perfect way to start a meal here. It’s also quite large, assuring it’ll make it around the table at least once. Fried Wild Mushrooms Delicious. Anyone who needs a refresh on how to deep-fry a vegetable, here’s your masterclass: Do what Odys and Penelope does. Oak grilled Branzino The meaty fish is done as good as you would expect it to be at a place like Odys and Penelope. But our biggest takeaway might’ve been everything under the fish. Slow grilled Tri-Tip This is the probably the signature dish here, and it’s phenomenal. And also probably the main reason it smells like heaven’s doorstep here. McFarland Springs Trout This was good, but we’d probably choose the branzino first. Chocolate Rye Pie Save all of the room. The desserts at O+P are pretty much all secret weapons, but the chocolate pie situation is truly special." - Brant Cox

"There’s a big flip coming to one of the busier dining stretches of La Brea soon, as rustic Odys + Penelope will close next month following a sale. The often-busy four year old California grill restaurant from the famed Hatfield family will hold its final night of service at the end of July." - Farley Elliott

It's a nice restaurant. We came for the happy hour and the food was good. The hamburger had a decent portion size, the other dishes were a bit small. The drinks and especially the wines that were part of the happy hour were great. The decor is really cool. Also we need to mention that the staff, especially the bartenders are really authentically friendly and nice people.

Fantastic food and overall experience. The vibe was contemporary without being pretentious. The centerpiece of the space is the large wood grill and open kitchen. Portions were medium sized. Definitely worth getting the cheese puffs as a starter. There was a nice bit of wood grilled smokiness in most of the dishes without being overbearing.

Food and drinks were actually very delicious and the decor/ambiance was cozy and welcoming. Dishes were vibrant and offered unique taste combinations. Cocktails were refreshing! We did run into a bit of an awkward situation, which I think should be mentioned. One of the guests in my party came from an athletic event and was particularly hungry. Our orders took a bit longer than usual to come out, which is not out of the ordinary with a popular restaurant during the dinner rush. Thus we asked how much longer it would take for entrees, the server responded that "it's being plated now, it'll be right out"... The food did not arrive for another 20-25 minutes after this. We didn't expect them to magically make food if it wasn't ready, but we did expect honesty from the staff. Given this information, my friend waited instead of sharing my food which I offered. If we would've known that the wait would be almost another half hour for his food to arrive, we would've shared even more. It was really this misinformation that increasingly aggravated the hunger with my friend and turned it to terrible experience for him. When the food did finally arrive, it was delicious. After which, our party of 3 was automatically charged a 20% gratuity charge. Not sure if this is standard practice, but we were definitely not a big party. Our party of 3 work in very service oriented professions, and this was very disappointing to have experienced this at a location in which we actually really enjoyed the food. A simple HONEST answer regarding the timing of the food (even if it was a longer wait) would have given us realistic expectations, instead we received misinformation and a further slap on the bill... 5 stars for food, but the service was really unforgettable...

Great service location and food! The chicken rice dish for brunch was fantastic! The doughnut holes, think beignets, were incredible. Try the pancakes over the waffles but the waffles are still pretty good. Fresh fruit too! We had dinner here before and may have enjoyed that more but would come back for brunch again too!

Really nice environment. Service was really good, the waiter also reccomended me some really good plates. I had the grilled Monterey squid to start. The plate itself was really good and tasty but i was disappointed by the quantity. Just four little squids for 15$. To follow i had the ribs on reccomendation of the waiter. I can't complaint those were amazing, highly reccomended for anyone who visits, the sauce was incredible. For 22$ though they could include a little side dish. I had to order that apart for 11$ (Brussels sprout fried rice). To conclude i had the chocolate rye pie. It came with chocolate mousse and mint icecream it was delicious.  I also had a glass of red cabernet from California. A little overpriced as a restaurant, probably because the neighbourhood is a little upscale, but totally worth it. I don't understand though why there are just two $$ on Google and not $$$, i think they should fix it. Anything else was really good, thank you for the experience in La Brea.  Might have to come back to try the fish next 😉

It's a great place to have some drinks and enjoy their happy hour! I recommend to go early, otherwise you'll have to wait to get a table if you don't have a reservation, but you can also seat at the bar. The staff is really nice, the food is ok and their desserts are the best!

Rustic yet refined. Creative fine dining. Portions on the small side. The food was thoughtfully prepared. The service was bit rushed. The wine was another highlight!

Beautiful restaurant in an old warehouse. It’s a large, bright and airy restaurant. They have a great menu and some really nice cocktails. The food was delicious and perfect for a hungover brunch. The service was good though a little on the slow side. Defiantly would recommend checking it out. Try the pancakes.
