Oh G Burger is taking over for long-running Montclair restaurant Flippers upon its owner's retirement, and fortunately the change is a positive one. Oh G also owns Korean BBQ restaurant Ohgane, so they've got experience. The restaurant has been updated with new paint and new murals of classic cars on the walls, aiming for the overall vibe of a 50's diner. Classic oldies hits were playing over the speakers in the background, but TVs were showing sports.
The menu, too, has been revamped. It's still primarily burgers with a few notable Korean-flavored specials, along with sandwiches, salads, and appetizers, but it's much more compact than before. This works in Oh G's favor, I think, as the shorter menu allows them to focus on a few things and do them well, and it's easier for customers to make a decision.
My mom and I paid them a visit this past Sunday evening during their soft opening (current grand opening is planned for September 22!). My mom ordered a classic hamburger (which comes with American cheese, grilled onions, Oh G sauce, and pickles on a toasted potato bun, and you can add lettuce, tomato, additional patties, or other toppings at a small cost), fries, and a chocolate shake. I ordered one of their signature items, the Bulgogi Burger, which comes with pickled red onions, a ssamjang aioli, and Ohgane bulgogi sauce, as well as an Oreo shake. The food came out relatively quickly, but aside from a few online orders they weren't particularly busy so that probably helped.
The burgers were done smash-style and were delicious and juicy - mine was practically dripping. The fries were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and tasted like potato. The shakes were thick, creamy, and flavorful. My mom said it was the best burger she'd ever had; I won't go that far but mine was extremely good. And the cost for everything was fairly affordable, given restaurant prices these days. I would have loved to see some Korean sauces at the table to dip the fries in (only ketchup and mustard bottles were available) but they'll provide a dipping cup of sauce if you ask.
In short, Oh G Burger is a great addition to the Montclair neighborhood, with a smart menu, good vibes, and tasty food. I highly recommend checking them out!
