My wife and I dined at Oko Rye last night, and sadly, we were left quite disappointed. Given the glowing reviews we had read, we eagerly opted for the omakase experience. The dinner featured 11 courses, including 10 pieces of sushi. The first three courses consisted of small "tapas" style plates--lobster ball, cauliflower soup, a deep-fried crab cake, and a cabbage salad. Unfortunately, none of these dishes made an impression; they felt bland and seemed designed more to fill us up before the sushi arrived.
As someone with considerable experience in omakase dining, having explored a variety of renowned and lesser-known establishments throughout NYC and Westchester, I found the sushi presentation underwhelming. Served in pairs, the two pieces per course didn't captivate my attention visually, and I've attached photos of the meal for your review.
Regarding flavor, the rice was undercooked and crunchy, lacking the essential rice vinegar and kombu notes. While the fish itself tasted fresh, it unfortunately lacked any real flavor, leaving us wanting that umami punch typically associated with a true omakase experience. It was puzzling how this restaurant earned a spot in the Michelin Guide, aside from its appealing location in Rye.
The meal concluded with a main course of oily cooked cod, drenched in a sweet sauce and accompanied by minced mushrooms. After just a bite, I decided I had reached my limit for the evening. Dessert was a chocolate cake with ice cream--an easily enjoyable option, so I'll give them credit for that.
The total bill came to $350 for two omakase dinners, one specialty drink, and three bottled Sapporos. Our waiter was attentive and ensured our water glasses were never empty, earning her a well-deserved 20% tip. However, there were moments when the bartenders were heard bickering over drink preparations, which was rather off-putting. Despite this, the staff was generally friendly, and the restaurant itself was small but clean.
In summary, this was the worst omakase experience I've ever had. I believe Michelin needs to reconsider this restaurant's standing, as the prices do not reflect the quality of the meal. I cannot recommend Oko Rye.
