The 14 Best Breakfast Spots in New York City

"A Japanese breakfast and ramen spot serving carefully curated set meals — roasted fish like yuzu black cod or shio koji–marinated toro with rice, miso soup, and three- or five-item rotating sides (examples include marinated broccoli with sesame cream and cherry tomatoes with tofu sauce) — alongside slurpable options such as shoyu ramen in a fish-and-chicken bone broth and a carbonara-inspired mazemen." - Joy Cho

Okonomi/Yuji Ramen - Review - Nomad - New York - The Infatuation

"In Nomad, Okonomi/Yuji Ramen now has a permanent second location where they’ve been popping up for the past few months. Right now, they’re just open for Japanese breakfast, where you can get your choice of roasted fish, roasted eel, or chirashi with a few sides. They’ve got one ramen on the menu too, made with a mixture of chicken and fish bones. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Loved the food. We got the yakizakana set. For the fish, the yellowtail tasted very good and fresh. It was well cooked. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere here is calm. Adds the perfect touch to the Japanese culture. Will come back Also, you don’t necessarily need a reservation for the manhattan location as opposed to Brooklyn’s. Went on a weekend day, plenty of seats available.

Loved their pop up last summer & glad they share space in Manhattan so I don’t need to trek to Brooklyn. We made a reservation beforehand but it turned out not being so important. I love you can get authentic Japanese breakfast in NYC & my friend loved it too! I got the black cod marinated in yuzu soy sauce & she got the Hana h grilled collar. Love you can choose 3 or 5 sides & they change their fish options based on what’s available. I went yesterday (still the heat wave) & I got offered a refreshing glass of cold barley tea! The cod was tender and flavorful! The gosai (5 sides) tomatoes over tofu spread, burdock, broccoli, egg omelette roll, and cole slaw. (These change too) The meal was complete with a bowl of white rice & miso soup. I love a warm breakfast with fish & vegetables. I had to try the Hojicha panna cotta - light, creamy with hint of Hojicha without being too sweet. A great ending for this great brunch!

This place was great! I came here with my boyfriend on a Monday night and the inside was super cool. We started with both appetizers (the sashimi and the eel dish) which were AMAZING! The quality of the fish was unmatched. We also got a piece of uni each. I’ve recently traveled to Japan, and the quality of their uni at this restaurant was superior to many that I tried in Japan. It was INCREDIBLE. My boyfriend got the eel and it was amazing. The sides were a bit strange and disappointing, but the main dish was the star. The eel was incredible, even their miso soup was flavorful. I got the spicy tuna mazemen. Here’s where my problem was. Unfortunately, my noodles were basically raw. When you bit a noodle in half, you could still see the white hard interior. The noodles were inedible which was extremely disappointing. The tuna and spicy flavors were great though. The dessert was AMAZING, it was a hojicha panna cotta (that was only 6$?!?! WOW) and blew us away. It was light and flavorful and perfectly sweet.

Google
In general I think it’s delicious. However, I think the appetizer (we had sashimi) looked and tasted like it’s been cut and ready for too long that the fish was a bit dry on the edge. The unagi was ok. Ebi ramen was quite special since I haven’t seen much fish/shrimp based ramen and I personally enjoyed it. I can see the shrimp meat from the soup base and it has a very strong shrimp flavor. Aside from those, I do feel like the tuna was a bit smelly and the soup is a bit too salty. Dessert was awesome!

Google
We had an incredible experience at this pop up! Having been to the original location many years ago I was excited to try their food again in a bigger space. I love that breakfast and dinner options are available all day! We ordered an unagi bowl with five sides, the tuna confit mazeman and some sake. Everything was delicious! The unagi was perfect and we loved sampling the five sides. I'm a sucker for omelette. The tuna confit mazeman was outstanding. The noodles were thick and chewy, the toppings had great flavor and texture. We also enjoyed both sakes we tried and would definitely return to sample more dishes!

Google
Great breakfast, lunch & brunch place to eat delicate and pretty Japanese bites. Ordered 5 pieces Japanese breakfast. Fish is the main dish. Three choices. I recommend Tai fish and swordfish. Recommend trying all the add-ons. There are four of them. Pictures and caption added for the details of the food I ordered.

Google
Overall a great experience, the location and restaurant looks really nice. They offer barley tea to drink, and the small menu service is quick. I was not a big fan of ramen with fish, but would return to try other stuff from the menu. The staff was friendly and attentive.

Google
The fish/chicken broth ramen was incredible & unique. I loved the slurp on these noodles and couldn’t stop myself from finishing the bowl. The chewy Mazemen though tasty was a bit disappointing & smaller in portion. Great atmosphere, though a bit hot inside. Service was what you could expect from an excellent Japanese restaurant. Overall a great experience.

Yelp
I recently visited the Okonomi Yuji Ramen pop-up, and while the experience was pleasant, the food didn't quite hit the mark for me. The presentation was beautiful, and the service was attentive and friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere. However, I found the flavors to be just okay. I'm not a fan of fish broth, which is a key component in many of their dishes, so the taste wasn't really to my liking. Overall, if you enjoy fish-based ramen, this spot might be for you, but it wasn't my personal favorite. The ambiance and service were lovely, though, which made the visit enjoyable.

Yelp
I've always wanted to go to Okonomi Yuji in Williamsburg and it was too far for me so I was pretty excited when I heard about this Manhattan pop-up location! I loved how simple their concept and menus were and thought the ingredients were nicely highlighted in their raw form. I went with their Yakizakana Set that came with roasted fish, sides, rice & miso soup. They have 2 options - 3 sides for $23 (Sansai) and 5 sides for $28 (Gosai). I went with the Gosai because I was curious about the different flavors. I was also able to choose the fish I wanted and went with their swordfish and it was delicious. Although the portions were small, I did really enjoy the flavors I got from each item. I will say that I do find $28 a bit of a steep price and I wouldn't get it again unless the portions were bigger as it wasn't very filling. I also had their Bacon & Egg Mazemen and I really enjoyed this one! There's a good amount of bacon in there and the onsen egg gives it such a delicious creamy texture! I enjoyed this more than the breakfast set, however, in my own daily life, I would be more inclined to have a breakfast set like this one here as it is nice and balanced. Overall, I am glad I finally got to try Okonomi Yuji before the pop up was over. I've also been more inspired to try and create these dishes at home.

Yelp
Despite ordering so much food, this Japanese breakfast spot felt clean and satiating. The pop-up is in the old space of LittleMad, and the service was pretty timely! -Eel appetizer (5/5): honestly have no complaints about this one. The eel was cold yet savory and still has a nice slightly crisp texture, and was a burst of umami flavor -Breakfast set with 3 sides (5/5): I honest;y loved everything. The salmon was the star, cooked perfectly and a bit fatty with the perfect sear on the skin. The sides were also delicious, with my favorite being the extra custard-y tamago. I also added an onsen egg and salmon roe. They were pricey, but tasted so delicious with the rice! Such a comforting brunch meal and great spot to catch up with a friend.

Yelp
The place is so cuzy and spacious. I heard this was a permanent store in Brooklyn. Looking into this, it looks like Okonomi serves breakfast and lunch, while YUJI Ramen is served at night. This is for the Yuji Ramen kitchen as I ordered the Okonomi Shoyu ($18) for dinner, which was made with fish bone broth. I ventured out with this one, and it's very unfortunate, but fishy ramen just doesn't work for me. The noodle texture was fine. Their Yellowfin tuna belly Chashu was intriguing to try. I would think it's pork if you didn't tell me otherwise. Very dry though. Best part was their dessert, Hoji Cha Panna Cotta ($6). Wish it was bigger to share!

Yelp
I saw this place all over my instagram and tiktok and knew that I wanted to try out this place since Williamsburg is such a sclep for me. I made a reservation online (which I definitely recommend) and my best friend and I came on a Thursday around 5:45 pm. We were seated immediately and the place was super spacious. I will say that the menu is fairly small - they are known for their breakfast set and I will say that their unaju set looked really good. My friend decided to get the bacon and egg mazemen and she really liked her dish. I had a piece of her bacon and it was so flavorful. I got the spicy tuna mazemen with an egg and it was also delicious. It was not too spicy and the tuna was pretty tender and the sauce mixed with the egg was so good. All our dishes came out fairly quickly and they also give you a post card when you leave. They are in this pop up location until mid October I believe so highly recommend you come by and check out this place if you get a chance!

Yelp
Rating: 3.5 I've been wanting to go to their Brooklyn location for a while now for their Japanese breakfast set but never got around to making the trek out there so I was excited to try the pop up when I heard they would be in Manhattan. They serve you hot tea when you sit down, which was really nice (I think it was genmaicha). If you get the breakfast set, you can choose between 3 v. 5 side dishes ($5 extra dollars) and you can choose a fish option (salmon, swordfish, and tilefish). Overall the breakfast was nice, but as you can tell by the photos it wasn't a lot of food. I personally wasn't a big fan of the beets and pickled vegetable side dishes, and the other components of the dish were just ok. Glad I was able to try this out while they were doing a Manhattan pop up!

Yelp
I had really high hopes as I've had their Brooklyn location starred for a few years now, unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. The waiter seemed like she was in a rush, interrupted us to take our order very quickly, the food came at very separate times for a group of 3 that one party had already finished his meal before the last person's dish came. The ramen was hearty though we got both the original fish broth and also the Ebi paiten but could not really taste the difference with the Ebi soup broth that cost $6 more (and no extra meat was included too). The bacon and egg mazumen was ok but not anything special and the bacon was quite fatty too. Overall, not the best experience and pretty price for small portions, but I would possibly go back to try their Japanese style breakfast menu but maybe at the Brooklyn location instead.

Yelp
Very hyped but quite underwhelming. Consider waiting a few weeks before visiting -- restaurant is still ironing out service timing kinks and the food is not a must-have. We had a reservation, sat down, and waited 50mins-1hour for the food -- be ready for that and don't come hungry. Small/medium portions and between the two of us we ordered 2 japanese breakfast sets and 1 ramen for lunch. Tilefish portion was small, dry, and overpriced for what it was... a fish-fil-a sandwich has more flavor and is more tender Waiters were very nice but one of the chefs was talking about how the fish should take this long because they don't have enough oven space to cook this much fish... then just don't release this many tables to be reserved? Also gave some negative comments to the waiters but will leave them off the public review. I have never waited this long for fish at a restaurant... it threw me off to hear that and I don't like to leave negative reviews. Again the waiters were very kind and I feel bad for them for service issues that are not their fault. I suppose this restaurant location is bad luck after previous tenants could not stay open. Hope the food and service gets better because Manhattan could use a spot like this if it was done well

Yelp
Definitely would recommend this place if you like more traditional Japanese foods! I loved the set with the fish! It was so soft and the side dishes were a perfect crunch to the meal. The ramen was clean and hearty and the noodles were perfectly chewy. The mazemen had a lot of flavors. The staff was super sweet and kept pouring us tea!

Yelp
Their okonomi shoyu was delicious, and not overwhelmingly fishy. Portions (including noodles and tuna belly) were smaller than I expected for an $18 bowl. I love mazemen so I tried their bacon and egg bowl. I loved the bacon which packed so much flavor per morsel, but the rest of the entree was underwhelming. Maybe I have misconceptions about what mazemen should be like, but I thought it would be more saucy, to the point where, after you finish the noodles, you have enough sauce/flavor where a small serving of rice is provided to soak up the rest of it. Instead, the entree was dry and basically only tasted like bacon (perhaps that's the goal). Given how many other competitors there are, I think I would only come back if I somehow had a specific craving for tuna ramen.

Yelp
Great ramen and fish. Not a large selection becuase a pop up but great meals. We had 2 different ramens and a fish plate with five sides. Sake by the glass was excellent

Justine C.

Yelp
Ebitan ramen was very fishy and not in a good way. Do not recommend the ramen. The appetizer was great though
