The 19 Best Restaurants in Lagos, Nigeria - Eater

"Making your way through a bowl of Olaiya’s amala and ewedu/gbegiri soup is a rite of passage for western Nigerians. Amala is a fluffy meal made from dried yam, cassava, or plantain flour that gets made into a super-soft light brown or black meal served with a generous helping of gbegiri, a bean soup that is often mixed with its slimier twin, ewedu. Ewedu is made from its namesake vegetable, which is cooked, ground, and seasoned. You can also get amala with any of the other soups offered here, or a spinach and tomato sauce called éfọ́. I liked the food, it had that great buka taste experience, the environment was clean, well ventilated and lots of space. The service people were nice and patient and didn’t get annoyed when I took time choosing what I wanted. Will definitely visit again if I am ever in that area again

I have eaten here and had take out from here many years ago when it was a simple bukka, now it seems like a confused restaurant/bukka or both. A spoon of rice costs N1000, beans is N800. I asked for Ofada sauce, was told its N2000 a spoon, thinking it would come with some meats and assorted stuff, to my surprise the sauce had like 2 tiny tiny pieces of shaki and 1 other tiny thing i couldn't recognise basically it was empty sauce . I had to then buy some regular meat which costs Nj500 per one, it was no bigger than what others sell for N200, this made me laugh, cos it definitely wasn't worth the N500. I definitely understood why the place was empty. Honestly the food wasn't bad, but I don't think this is a place i would visit again or recommend to anyone.

Food is okay but kind of pricy for a local restaurant. Their service is ultimately poor though. I ordered food online and they brought it to me in an unbranded nylon with my food plate held only by a rubberband. To say I was shocked is an understatement. The rider could have shat in my food if he had the mind to because this brand does not care about the quality of their service. Other food outlets at least try to package foods in ways that the courier won't be able to tamper with it. I hope you take a note of this and improve on your delivery service.

Olaiya has always been known around Surulere as one of the top spots to stop for a delicious plate of amala. Now the food is beyond just amala, you can enjoy rice, beans etc as well. The restaurant is clean and the staff are courteous. Very delicious meals.

I had hot Amala, Ewedu, Gbegiri and Goat meat. It was yummy 🤤. The place had Air conditioning so it wasn't hot while I ate.

This meal has an acquired taste and you have to be from the culture to really appreciate the authenticity of the meal. Amala, gbegiri&Ewedu is a popular Nigeria yoruba dish. This restaurant has done an excellent job with preparing and preserving the unique taste of this meal.

Spoilt croaker fish was sold and the manager refused to taste the fish to verify. He was claiming that it must be the sauce that went bad… if that is so the fish has been simmering in germ infested sauce…….. great way to have food poisoning. Not so impressed as it was my first time.
