"Old Bull Tavern’s chef and owner John Marshall will be remembered by many Charlestonians as the former founder of beloved Al Di La. OBT — as locals call it — features lots of creative takes on Lowcountry favorites (like Marshall’s pork chops with collard greens and the Lowcountry Captain), popular wood-fired pizzas, and former Al Di La specialties, including the gnocchi with fresh local shrimp, tomatoes, and basil." - Lynn and Cele Seldon

"If you're wondering where the old bull in question is, just look up: the tufted head is mounted above the bar in this cozy-contemporary restaurant. And that's not the only thing with personality—friendly bartenders sport shirt sleeves and suspenders while they whip up cheeky takes on classics (try the New Fashioned), and the food, like a zesty plate of wasabi deviled eggs, has spunk, too. Bring your parents for a buzzier night out, or a group of friends looking to share a few plates." - Paul Oswell

The food is yummy (most important). We ordered salmon and pork chop. The puree is good and seasoning on point. I tried the 'Life's a peach cocktail', and it turned out good and sweet. I love it 😁. We came here during the weekday and dinner time, and it's a bit busy, but the waiting line wasn't that crazy.

Google
Amazing!! Stumbled across this tavern walking around town. We highly recommend to eat and take in the full experience. We had a few drinks and stayed for a meal and dessert. You will not regret. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were amazing to watch. Food, drinks and service were amazing.

Google
Wow so happy we found this place ! Look for the metal bull sign because there is no name on the building . Can't say enough about the service , the food and the atmosphere. You MUST try this place if you are in Beaufort! Well thought out menu, and great wine selection too!

Google
Joint frequented by locals. Peach perfectly poached sitting on top of goat cheese on toast sprinkled with peppery olive oil. Piquant rocket. Delicious. Lowcountry Captain was flavourful and rice al dente. Nice. Good beer and drinks. Friendly service. A true delight.

Google
4.2 stars for me, the place was busy for a Wed night, but we found a seat pretty quickly. Drinks were not expensive, but I felt the food was a little high for the portion size for my particular meal. I ordered the duck breast, it was really good, but the sides were hardly existent. After about an hour wait, I got half of duck breast, a couple veggies and about a table spoon of delicious butternut squash. For a $25 dinner, I was hoping for more. The pork chop meal was a much larger portion size, sides included. If you want a big meal, avoid the duck, the lamb shank was recommended. The upside down pineapple cake was amazing as well. Overall a good place to eat, service was spot on.

Google
Old Bull Tavern offers a drink and food menu that far exceeded our expectations. The staff was amazing and super efficient. The atmosphere was perfect. Stacy at the front was great with our young daughters and got us a table fast. Megan took great care of us and when I went looking for the owner to praise everyone I met Ashley who said that's why she'd worked there for over a decade. Ashley said the owner walked her down the isle and that she'd pass along how happy we all were. Outstanding job Old Bull Tavern Team!!!

Enjoyed a great meal here. I had the Cider-brined 140z Duroc pork chop with collard greens, polenta and apple shallot compote. Very good

Google
We had the Escargot, Gnocchi, pork chop and pineapple upside down cake. Everything was amazing. Sydney our server was great. Oscar the owner and his team gave us a great experience and were very hospitable. You owe it to yourself to stop in and enjoy what they have to offer. Thanks again Oscar for your hospitality and amazing food.

Yelp
Food awesome Service kind and helpful Ambiance to die for Walk down a side road off bay street. There it is! When they say they open at 5 pm. They are open at 5pm. If u don't have a reservation get there early, mid feb 15 minutes early , got me the 5 seat on the bar. I had shrimp garlic etc.... as starter. It was not alot but flavor full. Then i had pork sholder braised in rosemary and garlic. The portion was enough to enjoy and not be stuffed. The pork cut like butter and it was delicious. I was afraid off dessert because i did not want a big fat Piece of cake. Well just like everything else it was not HUGE . It was just perfect individual pineapple upside down cake. I am glad that Dan at the TRU Hilton in Beaufort suggested it

Yelp
We are locals and crave for creative, seasonally inspired food. The Old Bull Tavern used to be a place we enjoyed a great deal, but no more. The duck breast I raved about five years ago was no longer a meal to even mention again. On a previous visit, the fat wasn't rendered properly, the skin was not even close to being crispy and succulent and the meat was unevenly cooked. After finally getting the attention of our server, I sent it back to the kitchen. I have no idea what the "chef" did to remedy the situation as the same breast came out looking like it was just reheated. Previous issues remained. By then, my husband was more than half way done with his meal, the restaurant capacity was full so finding servers became a task in and of itself. This was not our idea of an enjoyable dining experience. Most Beaufort restaurants unfortunately, offer nothing creative or original. Line cooks abound but chef driven restaurants don't exist. The Bull used to advertise that its offerings not only changed with the seasons but could even change on a monthly basis. Sadly, this has not been the case in our past three visits. We were beyond dismayed to see the same winter and fall menu yesterday. It's the week before Memorial Day and nearby farms are brimming with fresh produce. Local fish purveyors are selling their catch. None of that was evident here. The same heavy dishes dominated the menu - Pasta Bolognese, lamb shank, duck, gnocchi, braised chicken, cottage pie, etc. Nothing sounded fresh and enticing. So we settled for a salad and a pizza. Not quite what we were expecting to enjoy for an anniversary dinner. Unfortunately, Blacksheep, the only restaurant in Beaufort that offered an ever rotating, truly eclectic and original menu has closed. (Not due to lack of patrons or lack of outstanding reviews and accolades). Why this area can't support and attract more chefs like Matt is mind boggling. We will stick to eating at home and wait to dine out during our travels.

Yelp
Sat at the bar, had great conversation with the bartender. Gin and tonic was a nice pour. Huge selection of bourbons. House brand sampler was nice. No food tonight but would recommend to friends. Heard Thursday nights are super busy but worth it if you're in town.

Robert C.

Yelp
A can't miss local favorite. Unique cocktails, diverse menu and a fun atmosphere. Staff is attentive, helpful and on their game.

Jack W.

Yelp
Fantastic, just make sure you make reservations! The wait staff was knowledgeable and the craft cocktails were next level.

Alphonso R.

Yelp
Good food. Great bartenders. Local vibe. Very much enjoyed while shopping for a new place. Thanks all!

Aly W.

Yelp
My friends and family always have an exceptional experience at OBT. I love that you can dine inside or outside and it feels intimate. One of my favorite appetizers is the smoked mullet spread. My favorite drinks are the French connection and the sangria. We are huge fans of the pizza and love when we get to sit in the back and watch it be made. Can't beat that Gorgonzola pizza! Another favorite is the lamb shank. I have never met someone that has had it and said otherwise. Services is excellent as well! If you are visiting Beaufort one must go to OBT.

Jan M.

Yelp
We watched the sunset (which coincided with low tide) from behind the Dockside restaurant, across the bay from town. Enjoy the remaining rays of sunset as we cross back over the bridge & stroll the few blocks from our hotel (City Loft Hotel), to the Old Bull Tavern. L-O-V-E that the signage is minimal "This IS our sign" & logo, reminiscent of the story of Ferdinand sniffing a rose! Sit in a great leather couch by the entrance, next to the bar & order (20 minutes before the kitchen closed): Green eggs & ham, Shrimp starter & Sardinian pizza. Wow, this experience alone is reason enough to return to Beaufort!

Christine D.

Yelp
Cute pub off the main downtown street. Kat at the bar is great! Make a reservation if not sitting at the bar. Started with the "Green Eggs & Ham" - wasabi deviled eggs. Sooo good! I could almost just have a second order and call it dinner! Tenderloin was tasty. Will be back! Not your typical pub food - higher end

Maritza M.

Yelp
Great food & customer service! Usually gets filled so I would recommend arriving early or making reservations. A great place to gather for dinner. You won't regret it.

Michelle T.

Yelp
Just a short walk downtown Beaufort and we arrived, the place was busy which was expected for Saturday dinner. We like to sit at the bar, so we waited about 10 min before two seats became available. We both ordered the Black angus Tenderloin, and it was amazing. We shared the Tiramisu which was also a great choice. We will be back.

Emma W.

Yelp
This was the perfect place for dinner with coworkers! We got to sit out on the back covered patio that had an awesome outdoor heater that kept us warm the whole time! The duck breast was perfectly cooked and beautifully plated! The waitress was personable and knowledgeable about the menu and gave great recommendations! Definitely recommend for a date night or out with friends :)

Kathy B.

Yelp
We loved the mixed olives and the oyster appetizers. The pepperoni pizza and taglitelle were absolutely delicious.

Cyndy R.

Yelp
We had a delicious meal, very expedient. Kathleen took great care of us! Such a fun spot!

Brian S.

Yelp
We had great food, great service, and great drinks! Stuff was professional, well dressed and the facility was Terrific. Can not gobwring here folks!

Karen K.

Yelp
Great food,Great service, HIGH Energy restaurant! Prices are reasonable but try not to sit in the bar to eat if you want to have conversation! The food is worth it!

Janice J.

Yelp
Loved my food! Very tasty. I ordered the gnocchi and tomato soup. Both were great and very filling. My husband ordered a sacordian(sp?) pizza. He liked it and it was a little zesty. We had a good time and I love the historical atmosphere. Four star only because the service was a little slow but definitely would go back.

Nick B.

Yelp
I wanted to like it, in large part because the staff was so nice and it was cute inside. But, the food was crap. The shrimp in sherry sauce, would have been good, however 3 of my shrimp were not deveined. So basically, you served me shrimp poop. With some leaf and a red chili. Don't plate what you can't eat. The anchovies with pistachio was acid on top of acid. Unbalanced, would be an understatement. You have to have more than one note. This is simply a novice palette, that shouldn't be doing recipe development. The drink, that they are famous for was good. It is the only reason they got 2 stars. The menu is huge and trying to be fancy. Advice, do less well. You are really missing the mark here. Yes, there was a wait list, but there aren't many places in town to eat. Please don't let the line fool you into thinking you're putting out quality food.

Sarah K.

Yelp
If you're entertaining guests or celebrating a special occasion in the Beaufort area, this is the SPOT. I love the variety of flavors, portion sizes, budgets, and drink specials. It's got a slightly romantic vibe that just makes you feel almost like you're in a movie. The servers and staff are professional and polished. If you've read to this point, you're probably not surprised that it's a bit pricy - but I do think it's worth it. Oh, and don't forget to make reservations!

James D.

Yelp
The old bull is absolutely one of the best places to get a steak and an excellent old-fashioned. It has old world, charm, traditional steakhouse with a turn of the century bar. You will feel like you went back in time and good luck getting a spot. You better make a reservation is incredible. It's definitely old-school steakhouse with excellent bar staff. This place is fantastic. Until next time I can't wait to go back. Highly recommended.

Katharine M.

Yelp
Stopped in at Old Bull Tavern after being told by multiple locals that it was the best spot in town. We went in at dinner time on a Saturday and we're quickly seated at the bar, our preferred spot. The bartenders answered any of our questions about food and cocktails and were sure to check on us regularly. The food was really good. We started with the escargot. It was super tender and was delicious on the bread toasted bread. The duck confit was also delicious. The duck was cook perfectly and had a nice crispy skin. The veggies it came with were okay, but nothing to write home about. I got the old fashion and it was good. No complaints. I will definitely hit this spot when I'm in town and try some of the other items on the menu!

Lauren T.

Yelp
Everything was 10/10! The service was great, the atmosphere was great, the FOOD was GREAT! I love truffle mashed potatoes and theirs might be the best I've ever had. The fettuccini was delicious, I love lemon and the sauce was very lemony so I loved it. The pita and hummus was super good. I would recommend getting a reservation though! We got their around 5:20 and the only place they had available that wasn't booked for two people was the counter in front of the wood fired pizza area. It was a secluded room at the end of the restaurant and we actually liked it because it was private and neat to see the pizza being made. However, the giant oven did make that room quite hot, so we might not sit their again and get a reservation next time!

Marsha S.

Yelp
We have been to quite a few restaurants when visiting family in the area. This was my favorite restaurant so far!! Casual bar atmosphere (think dark English pub) with delicious food and cocktails. The restaurant changes daily. I had the lamb shank and an old fashioned. Wonderful combo for a cold evening. Can't wait to return on our next trip to Beaufort.

Kylie A.

Yelp
Always love stopping in here for drinks. Last night we tried the New Fashion and the drink of the day which was the Field Trip. I love the uniqueness to their drinks. The ambiance is very unique as well!

Alma P.

Yelp
Reasonably priced, well portioned. We had the 'House made Fettucine Spoleto w/ Pancetta' just the right portion the creamy lemon sauce was my favorite. We also had the 'NY Wood-Fired Oven Pizza' it's a 12 inch round pepperoni pizza not as thin as traditional wood-oven, but it was good we'd order it again. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. Our dishes were served warm & promptly. Atmosphere is lively, decor is rustic with low candle lighting. A good spot for Date Night or group gathering. A crowd waiting for Doors to open at 5pm is always a good sign. The hostesses are well organized and move promptly to seat everyone. **Menu varies and is based on items available/seasonal.

Robin P.

Yelp
Love this place. So intimate inside and the food!!!! The food is amazing and fresh. A must go to

Richard A.

Yelp
Excellent service and dinner. The stampede for bar seats appears a bit ridiculous might reserve these to better represent the quality you are.., Sure there are more humane options to eliminate it thanks

Jan M.

Yelp
Service is top notch. Food was delicious. Atmosphere was energetic. Well worth a visit if you're in town!!! Plus they had Guinness on tap which for my husband he loved.

M N.

Yelp
Service was lacking... When I walked in they gave us two options patio or pizza counter. We went out side to the patio but after 5 minutes of sitting we were being eaten up by bugs. So I Asked to take the pizza counter and was told we had to speak to our waitress. Waitress was no where to be found for about 20 minutes. When she finally came over she stated she wasn't sure why they were seating people outside since the bugs were bad. Then said we should speak to the manager. Funny thing was, the guy i asked about moving to the pizza counter was the manager and could have remedied the situation! I felt he was profiling us and was unprofessional. Needles to say there is a fabulous restaurant around the corner with better service Saltus River grill! Better food and service.

Jane A.

Yelp
Always a good experience at Old Bull. This time I had the anchovy appetizer. Fantastic. I also went with a blue cheese burger which was prepared perfectly. My husband had the wasabi deviled eggs and Spoleto pancetta. He thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to our next visit. This place is a favorite.

JoePat R.

Yelp
They make the best cocktails the proper way with the best liquors Food and service good too

Cathryn M.

Yelp
it is hard not to recommend this restaurant, the service was impeccable. The food was delicious. The reservation system was so easy to use, and the location is easy to find.

Jenny S.

Yelp
Loved everything about this place! The ambiance is spectacular. We sat at the bar and ordered fun cocktails and food. The menu was very interesting and it was hard to decide what to eat. I chose the escargot and the duck confit. So happy with my decision. Every single bite was fantastic. I didn't want the food to end. The duck confit was perfectly cooked and very juicy. The butternut squash purée was a great addition to the dish. This is a hidden gem not to be missed. Can't wait to come back and try more food.

Marvin M.

Yelp
A staple and the heart of Beaufort restaurant. Over the years, food continues to provide excellent taste and service is very professional. Difficult to get into at times for good reason.

Tony D.

Yelp
Had the opportunity to sit at the bar , have a few drinks and have a delicious meal. Patrons are friendly, the service is exceptional. The atmosphere is quaint and welcoming. I do suggest if you want a seat at the bar you should be prompt ( opens at 5 ) bar is usually filled at 5:01 - you can put your name in for wait list. Cocktails were perfectly made , the dishes are equally as good. I would recommend you visit and enjoy the entire experience.

Greta Z.

Yelp
Great place! Loads of character. Make reservations. Show up early to grab a seat on the sofa and order a drink. Don't worry about the noise; the dining area is quiet. Pay your tab. The host will escort you through the red phone booth to a cozy, quiet table...perhaps even looking over to the pizza oven. Don't miss the pasta and pizzas made in house. The cottage pie is cozy (but not Instagramable with it's sad piece of sliced cheese on top of tube-swirled potatoes). The pork chop isn't large but is tasty. If you're new to the area, be sure to walk straight down the street all the way to the water for stunning sunset vibes.

Christophe D.

Yelp
Good: - food for most of it - atmosphere - friendliness - other clients, all very cool Bad: - TOILET (1 for both gender and disgusting, even for a guy) - food (shepherds pie was not the best)

Scott M.

Yelp
Great spot in downtown Beaufort... creative menu, delicious food, superb drinks. And... Friendly staff

T K.

Yelp
Amazing meal. My wife and I were visiting Hilton Head and did a day trip to Beaufort. This was by far the best meal we had all week. We had the pork chop, the cottage pie, chicken liver pâté and winemaker's salad. Sydney was our waitress and she was welcoming, professional, and had great recommendations. Make reservations on their website and ask for the interior dining room. You'll have a great time!

Abbie D.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere. Best food we've had in Beaufort! This is real Italian food with clean ingredients and everything made in house.

E E.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great food. Great drink. Great service. But the place could use an extra wipe down. The walls and decor seem a little overlooked in the cleaning department.

Rich C.

Yelp
Host seemed genuinely po'd we were not locals and didn't have reservation. This happened twice.

William P.

Yelp
This is a somewhat hidden gem off the main track. The menu exhibits culinary aplomb backed up by skilled food preparation. Appetizers, small plates, soups and salads, entrees, and desserts to die for. Duck Comfit and Braised Lamb. Pasta and gnocchi. Beef, fish and shellfish. Even an 8 oz hand patted hamburger yield satisfaction for every appetite and taste. Imaginative cocktails, wines and beers, and a full bar with a substantial whiskey selection sets the old Bull Tavern apart. Don't miss this place with its attentive and professional team of servers and bartenders.

Roberta M.

Yelp
This is a very chic place a block from the waterfront in historic downtown. It's larger than it looks from the outside, but is also very busy. Based on other reviews, we saw when we checked into our hotel, I called for a reservation. I got one that we gladly accepted even though it was slightly different time than we'd hoped for. I strongly suggest getting a reservation because when we arrived, I didn't see any empty tables except for the one we were escorted to, and one other. They had several wines on tap. I was familiar with only one and it wasn't one I'm fond of so we were reluctant to order by the glass, but didn't really want a whole bottle. We selected the Cabernet and it did not disappoint. My husband ordered the tomato basil soup to start while I ordered a salad with salami, toasted nuts, grapes, and cheese. Both were excellent! The entrees we selected were the duck breast and a hand crafted pizza with mushrooms, cream, asparagus and more. Both were outstanding. And of course every good meal is made even better with good service, and Meagan (sp?) was simply delightful. Professional, friendly, helpful and with a developed sense of timing as she handled several tables. Just a heads up, depending on your group, with very tall ceilings, not much to absorb sound, and a very busy place, it gets loud. Tonight for us that didn't matter in the least, as we also had a table farther away from the bar area. Just loved our visit and would definitely come back if we are in the area again.

Aj W.

Yelp
I highly recommend. Make sure you have a reservation, this place fills up quick and for a good reason. I was by myself so I was lucky to get a seat at the bar before 6 PM. Very authentic atmosphere in a unique historical setting. The drink menu is fantastic, almost as good as the food menu! I got the escargot and the beef shoulder tenderloin. Both were very well cooked and rich in flavor. I was stuffed. But let me tell you, I could not be more happy that I got the butterscotch pudding! One of the best desserts I have had in a long time. Very rich. I could barely walk back to my car and I was not mad about it.

John N.

Yelp
If you want the best pasta in town... order the House made Fettuccine Spoleta with Poncetta Italian sausage and Lemon cream sauce. DELICIOUS!! Pretty much everything else is very good. The atmosphere is wonderful and friendly with fantastic waiters. Full bar as well.

Walter G.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant Excellent staff Menu selection hard to beat Highly recommend Reservations There are trees are excellent, and the pizzas are great While we were in town, we ate there twice in one week

Laura P.

Yelp
Old Bull Tavern is no bull. Great food, great service great atmosphere in this setting of an old Beaufort building! So glad we decided to veer off the route home from Charleston to try out Old Bull Tavern in Beaufort! A neat and tidy heap of wood at one end of the restaurant feeds the brick pizza oven! I began my meal with a salad of fresh, crunchy romaine, Gorgonzola dressing, candied walnuts and topped with poached pears. Yum! My daughter and I enjoyed sitting at the counter watching Omar toss the pizza dough, construct each pizza and then bake to perfection in the brick oven. We decided on sharing two pizzas, the Alsatian and Sardinian (both $14.50). Pizzas are about 10 inches, and we had plenty to take home for later. The outer crust was crunchy, yet soft and the bottom crust was thin with a crunch, too. So good! Last, but not least, at the advise of another reviewer we decided to share their homemade Butterscotch pudding. Decadent. Delicious. Rich. This buttery pudding was topped with homemade whipped cream and sprinkled with a bit of flaked sea salt.

Heather L.

Yelp
Excellent quality and service! We started with roasted olives. They were delicious! We both ordered pizzas. My husband had the NYC and I had the Madrileno. You can tell the ingredients they used were top quality. The flavors all went together nicely. I also had an amaretto sour to drink. It was tasty! We look forward to trying other menu items the next time we're in town. I was glad we made reservations. There was a line waiting when they opened.

Treva C.

Yelp
We had another delicious meal this evening, guided by our foodie waiter Hector. Everything from the Prosecco with St. Germain to the escargot and middle plates with fresh chanterelles and gnocchi was delightful. The desserts were the highlights again - the butterscotch pudding and chocolate terrine were both stellar. Our best food yet in a town full of good restaurants!
