Old Stove Gardens has good beer and a nice patio - Review - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Old Stove Gardens sounds like it might be a lush, fancy version of Old Stove Brewing Co. But the Ballard outpost is mainly just really big with lots of gravel—and that has some appeal. When the weather’s nice, the place can get crowded with large groups, families, and dogs (the Seattle brewery trifecta). But it’s never too noisy, nor is it much of a chore to find a seat. With lots of space around each table, a few fire pits, and cornhole, this is a decent spot to knock back a few beers or slushies with friends during the summer. Just get dinner beforehand—most of the food here is skippable. Food Rundown Beer The Czech-style pilsner here is genetically engineered for hot days. We also like the Amber Waves—a red ale that’s as smooth as a Kenny G riff. Slushies The blackberry vodka lemonade maintains its icy consistency for a surprisingly long time, and delivers a pleasant pucker. The mango version is a little on the sweet side, but not a bad patio sipper. photo credit: Gabe Guarente Jalapeño Artichoke Dip This is a creamy starter, but there’s barely any artichoke chunks in it and we couldn’t detect a hint of spice. The Old Bay-seasoned chips it comes with are much better on their own. photo credit: Gabe Guarente Caesar Salad This pile of wilted leaves has too much dressing and too little crunch. photo credit: Gabe Guarente Smoked Burger There are crusty and cumin-y edges to the patty, but the meat itself is overcooked and the bun is stale. Skip it. photo credit: Gabe Guarente Smoked Chicken There’s barely any chicken inside this sad sandwich, which lacks the alleged smokiness. And any meat that emerges is dry and smothered in too much mustard." - Gabe Guarente

Their Ballard location: Mid-Saturday, sunny & hot. The place is well attended, you can tell by the lack of street parking... but they have their own lot. Decent selection of brews, seating areas, and a short menu from a well installed Food Truck. The Plain Ol' Smashburger & side Caesar Salad they offer are both very simple, and very tasty. LOADS of late 20s folks, and a few oldsters like we are... as well as couples w/ kids. Quite a few well behaved humans with dogs, too. Large yard area (corn hole toss), large bar area, large indoor area. A few spots w/ shade, is a definite limit to the party space, but is does allow groups to coexist and not have to mix, singles w/ families w/ dogs. Good beer, goodfood, good venue... if you aren't having a good time, you brought that with you, you didn't find it here.

Exceptionally friendly hosts and bartenders. My only gripe was the smash burger which was pink. I probably should have asked for it to be made a certain way, but I assumed a smash burger to have a medium almost well done patty. Thankfully they didn’t charge me for it.

Old Stove- Gardens is located in what seems like an old warehouse or shipping building. They utilize about half of the building. My partner and I walked in. I was a bit confused. There are two separate people working different cash registers. We showed our IDs and ordered the first round of drinks. And proceeded to a very cute outdoor seating area. There are propane bonfires to sit around. The seats are very low to the ground. Which necessarily is not a negative thing. However, when the food came (will talk more about the food later), the seats are difficult to eat in. Unless you want to eat with your head back while you lean backward in the chair. Had to sit on the front edge of the wooden chair. Partner and I kept sliding back. Now the food. I was sitting and waiting for a menu. No one helped us or explained how to order. There are no menus! But they do have a menu for their draft beers. Pet peeve of mine. Shows me that you are not confident in the food. Not to mention, half of the menu was "sold out." Bad business for a Friday night. So essentially, my choices were burgers, roasted carrots, or huckleberry bread. I ordered the smoked burger with bacon. Burger was pretty good. NO SIDES. When I pay $20 for a burger, I should get fries or a salad or something. You have to order on your phone or at the register. Another thing that I hate. Also, sign at the table and ask the customers to bus their own tables. So I paid $20 bucks for a burger and more on drinks, and I do all the work. This morning, I went to a nearby sports bar for brunch. I paid less money for more food and drinks. They had menus and the staff bussed my tables snd asked if we wanted more drinks. When interacting with staff, they seemed nice and helpful. This is not an attack in them. I see this more as a manager decision to cut costs and give less duties to their team. I can not recommend this place until they offer fair products for the prices they charge. If you want to charge the amount you do for a basic burger, then I should be taken care of without question or expectation that I will walk to order and bus my own table. It's interesting that the neighboring bars and restaurants offer that and for much cheaper. Also got a flight if in-house brews. That was actually pretty good. "Ring of Fire" is a great tasting alcoholic beverage! But yeah, go somewhere else.

Incredible place and amazing bbq!! The sausage is on point! The collards with beans are sweet and salty just the way I like them. The white bread is home made and that served with the beef belly. The pickles are homemade. Everything is just so fresh delicious and you can tell that Daryl and management and the people care about the service, beer and the food. I’ll be back! I also heard that there will be heaters and coverage for the rainy season soon! They already have great fire pits.

~~~new July 2024~~~ We have not gotten into a situation where we had to wait a long time, but I'm not sure that situation is resolved since there are the same amount of waitresses. The food quality isn't as good as last time. Brisket is overcooked but the pork belly is good. I will return in the early fall and try again. But definitely a improvement from the spring. One more star. Btw, I really want this place to succeed. ~~~old~~~ Great beer, great food. Everything about Old Stove Gardens should be great. But is it not. I truly believe that management expanded too quickly without taking into account of costs. I came here on a warm Thursday night and waited a whooping 30 minutes for beer and food. The whole system is broken. If you want to do beer, fine. But as soon as you add cocktails into the mix and have the cashier making drinks, the whole model falls apart. I can see how stressed the waitresses are. Management needs to have more staff, especially for the upcoming summer months. Waiting 30 minutes for drinks when the place is half EMPTY is NOT okay. To rub salt in the wound, it takes another 10 minutes to change out the water keg. Unacceptable. I can see the stress in the staffs eyes. Fix it. I will still revisit as the weather get warmer but if things stay the same, I would not be visiting this location again. My experience here is very much atypical of the Old Stove experience I'm used to.
Service sucked! Asked for salt and pepper and it came out in thimbles. The $10 pretzel bites were dry and had no flavor. Ordered the artichoke and jalapeno dip and was served with no plates to eat it on. The $22 burger was dry and tasteless. The beer was good but the food was some of the worst I've ever had. Pretzel bites, artichoke dip, 2 mac and cheese, 2 burgers and the French onion dip sandwich was $130 bucks! Could have had a better meal at McDonalds!
Google
So thrilled that Old Stove has opened this Ballard location! Goes without saying that the beer is terrific, but the food is absolutely next level. We had an assortment of BBQ-themed picks where every bite made you want to close your eyes and savor the flavors. It's 2 days later and I'm still thinking about it. Kind, joyous staff and good vibes all around. Kudos to the Old Stove team for creating a new favorite Ballard destination!
Yelp
Love what Old Stove did with the former Lagunitas bldg. it's been spruced up to the max and the outdoor space is fantastic. Always great rotation of beers on tap and you can't skip out on the Blackberry Vodka Lemonade slushy...wow that thing is good. Dog friendly and they do have food available as well. I will note the line gets pretty long for drinks but the staff are pretty quick. Love this place!!
Yelp
Steve and I had Old Stove again. It's been a while since we have had their beer and we have never been to this location. Seattle has such a wide variety of breweries some of them get overlooked after we try them but this additional location pulled me in. For this brewery visit we had the 8 of Spades which is a Pilsner. We liked this pilsner pretty well! The flavor highlights that led us to our enjoyment were sweetness, bitterness, a hint of grape flavor and a clean finish. Like all pilsners it was light bodied which we always appreciate during our brewery drinking experiences!
Yelp
My neighbor and I go on weekly walks and often try places new to us while we're out and about I heard about the bbq program from a friend we decided to give it a try a few weeks ago. Not the greatest of weather but we did check out the outdoor space before we left. The exterior and interior space is very spacious lots of room for diners and tasters. I felt like a salad that day and added one their house made sausages for protein and a biscuit cause I can't resist when I see biscuit on a menu. I asked the staff which was the most popular of their sausages as there is a choice of three flavors Beer Bratwurst, Jalapeno Cheddar and Wild Ramp Kimchi. I went with the jalapeño cheddar. The biscuit came with a delicious rhubarb jam. Definitely would like to try the corn bread next time along with the bbq. My friend was just ok with her curried chicken salad and greens. I had the Tropical Sour and my friend had the Hell Hawk Stout I believe. Uiu can tell our beer tastes are extremely different from each other but that's what made Old Stove a good choice there is something for everyone's taste. Looks to be a fun place to visit when the weather starts warming up. I appreciate everything is made in house.
Yelp
Fun place! They give you coloring sheets and crayons which were fun. Draft beer is good and the bartender was great at changing the station to the football game we wanted to watch.
Yelp
Came here for a birthday party and I don't drink. So I was wondering what I should get and didn't expect much of the food. We ordered pork belly sandwiches which to my delightful surprise was amazing. They were generous with the pork which was seasoned with some type of spice that tasted like 5 spice. The meat was tender and I would definitely order this again. The service was pretty quick and decent.
Yelp
Great beer, great food, great out door seating, and insanely clean and spacious bathroom which is so hard to find in breweries.
Yelp
A fun brewery with a huge outdoor space. The stout was tasty, light and just dark enough.
Yelp
Had a casual but large family gathering here on a Monday night. The space is an awesome mix of indoor and outdoor seating, it can fit 100+ people easily. The beer selection is great and hits all the notes you could want. Standouts were the fresh hopped citra ipa, brown and the cherry sour. They also have a locally sourced liquor well for the non beer drinkers. The food and service were great as well, great vegetable sides for the vegetarians and nice big meat sandwiches for the rest of the crew. They have a bunch of big TVs so we were able to watch both the baseball playoffs and MNF. Overall great experience, 100% will be back.
Yelp
Beer is good here, but the food not so much. The Mac n cheese seemed to of miss the cheese part and the tri-tip was dry, tough, and tasted more like the parsley garnish than it did smoked meat. Super disappointed.
Yelp
Super solid place to grab an afternoon or evening beer with friends. The back patio comes equipped with cornhole, umbrella covered tables, small fire pits, and enough seating to accommodate large groups. Every once in awhile there patio has live music which makes for a really fun evening! Overall the patio, bar, and bathrooms are all very clean which makes for a good family friendly brewery vibe. Both the beer + cocktails are good and the food (often some kind of BBQ) is great. The servers and staff are all nice and friendly in my experience. My one qualm with Old Stove is that the drinks are pricey, but hey, its Seattle.
Yelp
Great outdoor space with tables and games... dog friendly outside, awesome space to grab drinks with friends or a large group.
Yelp
1/2 lb of beef, 1/2 lb of pork belly, one ear of weird "street corn," and two pints: $80+ with tip! Had it been scrumptious but overpriced it'd be different. But SALT!!! The only thing saltier I've ever tasted than the meat was... a spoonful of salt. Did I mention it was saltyish? Hoooey, that's some saltiness. Yowsa. Was hoping for some rockin' BBQ in the neighborhood since Drunky's Two Shoe went bust; will keep wishing. Waste of a lovely outdoor space that allows dogs. Hmph.
Yelp
Overall: good beer and good vibes. BUT! The food is a bit lacking. We got the Mac and cheese and I gotta say - couldn't taste much cheese in it. It ended up tasting like lightly buttered noodles with bread crumbs. I also had the bratwurst, and while not as bad as the Mac and cheese, could have had a bit more going on. Overall pretty disappointing for a place leaning into the BBQ vibe. I'll keep coming back for casual drinks and hanging out, but would love to see an improvement on the food side
Yelp
So glad to have this place in my neighborhood! I love the Pike Place and Ship Canal locations, so I knew I was going to love this one too. Amazing barbecue, the brisket is so tender and delicious. Don't even get me started on the grits and Mac and cheese. Love that this brewery offers cocktails and a full bar, along with food. Game changer! Service was friendly and everybody seemed to be having fun!
