I've been saying Long Beach really needs even one *really* great bagel shop for the past decade to anyone who will listen (my reference being a wonderful place in NorCal called The Bagelry that I miss being hundreds of miles from, if you're ever in Santa Cruz) - so when I heard Olive & Rose had set up to open in the day as a fancy bagel place starting a couple months ago, I was pretty excited by the news... until I saw their prices ($9 for a bagel with a basic savory spread, 14 with jam, 18-19 for the fancier stuff), that mostly being why I hadn't gotten around to checking them out until yesterday, when they had their "grand opening". (As far as the "grand opening", while I'm absolutely not *knocking* them that their social media people didn't talk to their menu people, it was a bit *weird* that they were advertising unspecified "bagel specials" all over the internet in the week leading up to it, which when I got to the front of the line, turned out to be "we don't know what that meant either".) But since I was already there and had stood in a long line, I figured it was my chance to try them, so I ordered a bagel and a half (I *do* like that you can mix and match half-bagels of the fancier ones, for not much difference in price.)
I'm *also* not knocking them at all for the fact that there was a long line to order that day, or it took about half an hour after ordering to get a bagel, because again, it was their grand opening and word had clearly gotten out about it. They have a good amount of seating, and deliver your food to you when it's ready, but only have one register for taking orders, and you can only order food/drink from that register - but presumably under more normal circumstances that wouldn't be much of a bottleneck. (Though, while they do have a proper bar, since they're the same space as full-service Olive & Rose in the evening, that is the reason I didn't end up trying their bloody mary while I was waiting yesterday: because I would've had to stand in a long line again. I did try their matcha latte, which was great - entirely reasonably priced at $7, and I appreciated that there was no additional charge to make it with oat milk.)
Anyway, while their menu is way more limited than The Bagelry both in terms of the bagels themselves (they only have plain and mixed poppy/sesame seed) and just a handful of spread/sandwich options, and for about 2-3x as expensive... I definitely don't have any complaints about how tasty the food was. Great bagel, perfectly toasted, and both the cream cheese spread and the whitefish were loaded with plenty of spread and, in the case of the fancier one, fresh veggies. (I also ended up with an extra half-bagel of the whitefish due to a mistake on their part, which I wasn't complaining about.) Great cream cheese (though the onion was fairly subtle - I could see coming back to try their one other flavor, black garlic and chive), great whitefish, great veggies, and on a great bagel (from a bagel place in Costa Mesa, Boil & Bake.) Just a little pricey - basically, I'd say, if you want a place where you can order a fancy bagel sandwich while drinking a beer or cocktail, come here (there aren't too many other options for that in the area, and the food here is indeed quite good.) If you just want a good bagel, though, go to 5th Ave Bagelry, get them from the source and save a few bucks.
