The Best Long Beach Restaurants, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"In 2023, Long Beach’s lauded Heritage emerged as Southern California’s sole Michelin star recipient. Around the same time, its owners, brother-sister duo Lauren and chef Philip Pretty, had a forthcoming project up their sleeves in a historic site: the chicly renovated City Center Motel. Named after Philip Pretty’s daughters, Olive and Rose offers bagel sandwiches and inventive coffee drinks during the day; for dinner, try Pretty’s neo-bistro dishes like the marinated olives, steak tartare, amberjack crudo, and roast chicken with foraged mushrooms. The sleek mid-century modern interior makes for languid mealtimes, no matter when you go." - Mona Holmes

Olive & Rose - Review - Long Beach - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Olive & Rose is a peaceful slice of Palm Springs in the middle of Downtown Long Beach. This relaxed French-leaning bistro from the Heritage folks sits on the ground floor of a revamped mid-century motel, with tables gazing onto a courtyard pool and retro parasols. You’d never guess this was a hotel restaurant, though. It oozes the kind of easy charm found at a proper date night spot. Start with the artfully arranged amberjack crudo that has little spheres of grape and cucumber, then split the steak frites with a ribeye cap that melts like soft butter and a cute bowl of crispy fries. And maybe a sauve prickly pear and jasmine martini for dessert. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Garrett Snyder

LA’s New Restaurant Openings

"The sibling duo behind Long Beach tasting menu spot Heritage now has a second (more casual) restaurant nearby called Olive & Rose. Located inside a revamped historic motel, O&R operates as a daytime bagel shop where you can order sandwiches stacked with gravlax, avocado, or an ounce of caviar if you care to drop $100 on breakfast. After 5pm, the French-leaning dinner menu kicks in, with beef tartare, endive salad, and dry-aged steak frites." - sylvio martins

Incredible dining experience at the Olive and Rose for dinner. We walked in to a beautiful dining room and a warm greeting from the hostess. The atmosphere was so cute and I just want my home to be decorated the exact same. The real treat was the food, oh my goodness - the appetizers were delicious and incredibly fresh. For our entrees, we each got the chicken. It was seriously the best chicken I have ever had in my life. With the freshly foraged mushrooms and just with the chicken, I was honestly quite sad that it was over when my plate was cleaned. One person at our table said if it was appropriate to lick the plate clean, they would. To finish with dessert, the mint ice cream is so fresh - best mint ice cream I’ve ever had. Also, pair the food with a delicious “pretty and basic” cocktail, you are set for a perfect evening. Overall, couldn’t recommend this restaurant enough. I wish I could rate them 10/5. They deserve it and I hope everyone gets to experience Olive and Rose!

Google
Such an amazing experience, I went two nights in a row! A reservation is definitely recommended, as this unique spot is small but the vibe is so lovely. Featuring such great farm to table ingredients and an experience, this was truly one of the best meals and wine selections I've ever had. Olive and Rose is definitely an amazing spot, highly suggested, and recommended! Staff work to learn your tastes and preferences, and we're so friendly and personal. It's not many that learn your name and wine preferences, offering what they remember the next night. Cannot wait to be back!

Lunch review. High quality food with attractive plating and good service. Creative, original choices on the menu. Lunch pricing very reasonable for the product quality. Refined casual ambiance, be aware it’s indoor but temperature will reflect whatever it is outside due to limited insulation and climate control.

Great new spot in Long Beach! Major MCM vibes, super cute vibe. Got last minute reservation, sat at the bar and it was really fun to watch the cooks. The fries were insane - the steak too but these fries... michelin star style fries. Great place to support and promote new local restaurants! They also do bagels in the AM, I haven't had them yet but plan on stopping by soon.

Service amazing. Food delicious. Nice ambiance- that hotel would be cute to stay at. Giving Lafayette in SD vibes, so maybe they should start hosting parties there. Definitely worth going to but just obviously expensive so not sure I would need to go back unless there was a fun event!

A perfect fine dining experience in Long Beach. Everything from the drinks and food, to the presentation and service, was immaculate. It is a small mid-century modern dining room in the former Century City Motel on 3rd Street in Long Beach, close to public parking. We enjoyed all the tastings, from the Crudo to the octopus to the bread with cultured butter, and the bass was also excellent. Another highlight was the Apple Tarte Tarin, which was divine with the Carmel and whipped cream. All the sauces and food tasted fresh and well-made. The prices are comparable to other date night and fine dining restaurants, so while high are expected and not out of the ordinary. There is also an outdoor seating area in the interior next to the pool, which is where the bathroom is (even the bathroom was kept very clean and we were pleased to see was also stocked with tampons). We would definitely go back and try some of the cocktails and mussels.

Google
The food is amazing, and the service was perfect, every staff member smiles, is attentive, and genuinely cares that their guests have an amazing experience! Chef Pretty and his staff work miracles with their small kitchen space 🙂. Every dish we had was sooooo good!! They officially have their full liquor license, and they have beer, a thoughtful wine list, and killer cocktails by their supremely talented beverage director Noah (iykyk.). They also have lots of tables on the terrace for walk-ins!! We can’t wait to see what comes next from this team!!

I didn’t get a chance to photograph the bread, butter, muscles, halibut and endive salad. But everything we ordered was delicious. For the cocktail, I tried three different types and my favorite was the pretty and basic.

Yelp
The ambiance was intimate and charming. The service was top notch, The pacing of the meal could not have been better. And the food. THE FOOD. It was incredible. What a spectacular meal with so much attention to detail and flavor. Best meal I've had in a very very very long time. Highlights included the Amberjack crudo, the aged rib chop, and the local halibut with an out-of-this world risotto. Ended the incredible meal with an affogato - expression poured over a toasted marshmallow ice cream. So so so good,

Yelp
Been wanting to try Olive & Rose for the longest time and it did not disappoint. Reservations are needed as it's a small space with limited seats. Menu options were limited, but everything we ordered were fantastic. Those fries are probably one of the best fries I've had!

Yelp
I was taking my friend out for a birthday dinner and we had actually both bookmarked Olive and Rose before so it was perfect. I will start by saying it's definitely tricky to find at first. It's in a motel so at first glance you don't see the name of the restaurant unless you are actually looking for it. It is street parking so be prepared to park a couple blocks if you don't get lucky. The inside is small, cozy and intimate. I love that the outside does not match the inside. Never judge a book by its cover. Love a nice wine and dine place that feels casual and not so dressy and bougie. The menu is straight to the point and very few selections, no substitutions. _Bread and Cultured Butter ($9) We initially was not going to order this, but when we ordered the mussels our waiter asked if we wanted bread since it does not come with any. Of course you can't have mussels and no bread to soak all the broth. For $9 yes it's pricey, but they do give a fair slab of 3 perfectly toasted thick slices of sourdough. The butter was great too. Very smooth and slightly salty. _Saltspring Mussels & Dashi Beurre Blanc ($20) Pretty small portion, definitely an appetizer for 1 or 2. The mussels were well cooked and the broth was good and not too salty but I felt it lacked some depth. _Octopus with Potato and Pimento ($24) This was a very nice starter to share. Light and full of flavors and texture. The octopus was perfectly cooked. The potato was soft and although I dislike celery, it added such balance and texture. I believe they added watercress or some green on top which was also a great addition to level out the subtle richness from the octopus and the potato. I would get this again. _Chicken with Foraged Mushrooms and Jus ($36) I was hesitant to order this at first because I eat chicken all the time at home and chicken can usually come out dry and lackluster. This is probably one of the best chicken dish I ever had. The chicken was so moist and juicy. The skin was perfectly crispy and had a subtle sweet and saltiness to it. The mashed potatoes on the bottom was whipped and went very well with the mushrooms and chicken. The au jus was on the salty side but I find that it was perfect when paired with everything together. Simple yet perfectly executed. I am very sad that the waiter said it was no longer going to be on the menu so I am very glad we ordered it. I will mention although the drinks we ordered were good, I was pretty disappointed and surprised that for the price point they give very little. I ordered a tequila cocktail that had the big ice cube (old fashioned ice) in a small water cup and it was barely even halfway filled. It made me wonder how little it would be if I took the big ice out. I would be left with 3 sips. Overall all though it is on the pricier side, the quality and details level the outcome of the food. Service was great and would definitely come back again.

Yelp
The dining room at Olive & Rose is giving Palm Springs and I'm absolutely here for it. I came for lunch on a Friday and the vibe was so chill. Honestly, it's the perfect place to ease into the weekend. We started with the olives, satsuma & fennel ($8). I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but the combination of the three ingredients came out in salad form. It was interesting both flavor and texture wise - bold, but subdued. Our big plates included the kanpachi tostada ($21) and the fried halibut sandwich ($20). While I do love kanpachi tostadas, I found the version here to have too much foliage. I just didn't think all that cilantro was necessary because there was a lot of it and it dominated each bite. That aside, the kanpachi was good! It had a little kick with the chili oil. My favorite thing I tried was the fried halibut sandwich. The halibut is flakey and is lightly battered. It has just the right amount of tartar sauce to get it going. This is a very good fish sandwich. Don't skip dessert. The toasted marshmallow ice cream was marshmallow-ing. Really fun stuff actually. I love seeing the evolution of the Long Beach food scene. Olive & Rose fits in nicely. I can't wait to return for dinner.

Yelp
Having Olive & Rose in our backyard is a privilege-- both their lunch and dinner have been the backdrop of many date nights full of laughter and loving conversations. Easily earning it a spot dear to my heart. Their cocktails are perfectly balanced and their wine list has something for everyone. ( also their wine glasses are elite and I'm still trying to figure out how to steal one..kidding) Lunch: their burger and fried jidori chicken are game changers and show stoppers--don't skip them. Dinner: Please get the steak frites, you won't be disappointed. The steak is tender, succulent and the sauce it's paired with is unctuous in the best way. Additionally, the endive salad reminds me of summers as a kid for some reason and I'm not sure why--it's refreshing yet comforting and plated so beautifully. If you're looking for a place to stay in Long Beach it's also connected to a boutique hotel, perfect for your weekend away.

Yelp
Ok. Woweeee. This place blew me and my friends away. Every bite of every dish was excellent. We had to google what a rib cap was but now I know the best part of the ribeye. Tender, juicy, so freaking good and with the absolutely crunchy frites and Mayo dip. Salivating. And then the asparagus with the brown butter tips. The juicy pork chop, and the combo of the crudo and veggies. Oh and of course the warm bread and salted butter. I am sending everyone here. The drinks are interesting combos of ingredients but also delicious. So get on down to this awesome joint. You will have a happy tummy.

Yelp
First off the food was amazing and it had fun cocktails. Every single wine I tried was dreadful and the corkage is a tad outrageous, but this hidden gem it totally worth it. It's hidden in this random hotel in Long Beach, but the service was great, the people were friendly. The drinks were seriously creative and tasty... but the food... literally everything I had was amazing. I love a charred octopus but this may be my favorite. This place is worth the drive but I'd u er because parking is terrible. We took an u we to be safe and it was perfect. Definitely recommend

Yelp
Finally booked a reservation for dinner at Olive and Rose after trying their bagels in the morning. With it being the creative mind behind Heritage, I was anticipating a great time and it didn't disappoint. The ambiance is stellar especially at night. The glow of the table lamps, interior design, and view of the City Center hotel courtyard as the backdrop, is stunning. The interior of the restaurant itself is small, but cozy. If you don't have a reservation, you can also enjoy drinks and small bites in the courtyard. Upon entering, I was offered the choice of sitting at the chefs counter or table. While the chefs counter offers an intimate experience, I opted for a table as the lighting and table space was important for this visit. Gianna was the server for the night and she did a great job and had an inviting approach to service. To drink I tried the Pretty and Basic, and a couple of glasses of wine. The cocktail was on the sweeter side and had a prominent coconut flavor. Not my favorite, but I'm not the biggest coconut fan. The wines I tried were great though! I got to try a ton of the menu, starting with the mussels in a dashi broth, beef tartare, and endive salad. Mussels were on point with a clean, light, umami rich flavor profile. A side of bread is a must to soak up the broth. The tartare is light and was perfectly seasoned. Lots of texture from the green beans, cornichon, and seeds mixed in. Lastly, the endive was a surprise for me. I admittedly rarely eat a salad, so the fact that I finished it means it was good. This endive salad has dates, humboldt fog cheese, and the sweet dressing made it delicious. I tried their lobster dish and steak frites. This is a unique way to serve lobster as you get a generous portion of lobster knuckle meat in a cold salad served on bib lettuce. The whole lobster tail is served with salt baked potato and lobster bisque. I was obsessed with the fries that came with the steak. I could just eat several portions of the fries. They are super crunchy while being light and airy. Paired with the tender steak and umami rich au poivre sauce, it made for a satisfying conclusion to the savory side. For dessert, I had the apple tart tatin and mint straciatella with magic shell. The chocolate pour on the ice cream was satisfying and the flavor of mint chocolate was nostalgic. Apple tart tatin was flaky and not too sweet and had a whipped crème fraiche on the side. Enjoyed my time at Olive and Rose for dinner and would do it again. I'd recommend to those that enjoy clean simple flavors that highlight seasonal produce and quality ingredients. It's also a good option if you're not willing to do a full tasting menu at Heritage.

Yelp
Olive & Rose has a beautiful vibey ambience with lots of windows and intimate seating. They also had great service and excellent recommendations for drinks and menu items. I went with my partner for our anniversary, and our server made our experience extra special! The type of food and flavor profile is very similar to Heritage, so if you're looking for the same type of meal, but without the big price tag of the prefix course menu, I would highly recommend checking out Olive and Rose. Food: The amberjack crudo was delicious, but I thought that a similar dish at heritage tasted better. The endive salad was very beautiful and had a lot of substance. I really enjoyed the fries in the steak frites, as they were perfectly crispy and went well with the jus from the steak! The chicken was also extremely juicy despite being chicken breast. Unfortunately, one of the dishes I was looking forward to the most, which was the apple pie, disappointed me. I've definitely had much better pastries, but I did enjoy that they had rosemary infused whipped cream, which was more special. I think this is a worthy spot to go to for special occasions as they have excellent service, vibes, and food.

Yelp
Very pricey bagel sandwiches but the quality and flavors make up for it. The workers were very patient and were nice enough to tell us their recs. The vibe inside was so cute! Kind of reminded me of a Palm Springs hotel :) Street parking only

Yelp
Owners of the first Michelin star restaurant in Long Beach, Heritage, recently opened this lovely French bistro located in the newly renovated, retro City Center Hotel. With a mid-century modern aesthetic, the place is intimate and romantic with soft lighting and low booths. When you see the hotel pool, you might recall some movies and shows filmed here like Titanic, Clueless, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Anchorman, CSI Miami, Griselda and many more! I hope they're working on their beer, wine and liquor license! For now, they're serving some unique craft mocktails, nonalcoholic beer, wine and soda. What I tried: Radio Cosmos $9: Salted Plum, Togarashi, Orange, Lime, Best Day Brewing Kölsch - savory, zesty and spicy, like a Michelada Queensway Bay $12: Ritual Aperitivo, Seedlip Grove, Strawberry, Passion Fruit, Vanilla, Orgeat - tart, and not too sweet, reminded me of a Pisco Sour Hope Ranch Mussels & Dashi Buerre Blanc $13 - omggg the dashi with all the garlic was to die for! Get some bread to soak it up! They also served a good amount of mussels. Endive with Dates & Humboldt Fog $18 - bigger portion than I thought it'd be. The endives were cut in smaller pieces and went well with the dates. I didn't taste much of the Humboldt Fog cheese though. I'll pass on this next time. Octopus with Potato & Pimento $24 - I order octopus nearly every time I see it on the menu and this was one of the most tender I've sunk my teeth into. Our server informed us it was braised for 4 hours and then marinated in a fish sauce. I enjoyed the balance of the greens with it as well. (Jidori) Chicken with Foraged Mushrooms & Jus $36 - recommended by our server. The chicken was definitely juicy. The foraged mushrooms were meaty and the creamy puréed potatoes with rich gravy were comforting. Forgot our server's name, but he was really friendly, attentive, and informative. Street parking can be rough as it is in the East Village.

Yelp
Cute bagel shop in the center of a hotel. Plenty of outdoor seating with a cute retro, Brady Bunch vibe. Service was fast and warm. Our server was patient and knowledgeable about their products. Drinks and bagels out in less than ten minutes. Everything we got was amazing but the amberjack "toast-ada" takes the cake. I could eat five of them. Great balance of flavors with the chili oil and crunchy bottom. The house cured gravlox is the best salmon bagel I've ever had. You can order half or whole bagels - great if you want to try more.

Yelp
Excellent first visit. Review is for patio and not restaurant dining. 15% off for riding your bike on Thursday deal was a great way for locals to try the place and is what got me in the door after wanting to go for a while. Patio is great with retro vibes, but, comfortable new seating. Order at the walk up window was easy and then seat yourself. The burger was very good, just perfect balance. The fries are incredible; triple fried means near steak fries level thicker cut but extra crisply, so good! The fish and chips was better than the burger; juicy and flakey fish with a tasty batter that had excellent crunch to it. Minus 1 star for the Pretty and Basic cocktail. It was a delicious and light but sweet flavor, but, also had a salty brine to it. The sweet and salty combo just didn't work for me at all and was extremely off putting to the point that I couldn't even drink it. I plan on returning to try more of the menu from this fabulous kitchen team. I'm hopeful they can redeem the minor gripe with the cocktail that wasn't to my liking and get the fifth star.

Yelp
I came here for the hype. Since I was able to get reservations for Heritage first, I visited a few months ago. I was finally able to get Saturday night reservations for Olive & Rose more than 1 month ago. I can understand why since the dining room is small. The renovated hotel vibe is very cool, though this part of Long Beach is rough with the homeless population. Parking wasn't as painful as Heritage, but I did have to circle for a couple of minutes for a free spot. The service was excellent. The waitress was attentive and plates were refreshed often. The food is very much like Heritage: American with a heavy French leaning. The dishes were fine as a whole, however, I was hoping for a wow moment that never came. Perhaps the Long Beach scene is slow and not as exciting as LA. My impression of Olive & Rose is the same as Heritage--competent well-executed dishes but they lack a pizzaz and "it" factor that would make me want to return in the crowded competitive LA foodie market.

Yelp
Got lucky to get a last minute reservation at Olive and Rose. Service was attentive and professional. Our server gave us recommendations when we asked but wasn't pushy. We started with the endive, date, and Humbolt Fog salad. It was different than anything I've eaten. Really balanced with good crunch. We also had the bread and French butter. Served warm. So good. And then I had the Fennel Crusted Kurobuta Pork Chop, Corn & Peaches. I love pork and this was one of the best I've ever had. It melted in my mouth. The flavors were perfectly balanced. The portion didn't look huge but I had a hard time finishing it. My husband got the duck breast with morels. I'm not a huge duck person but the skin was so crispy and the morels had a lot of flavor. Finished with the chocolate mousse cake. I can't wait to go back and try more. Hip ambience with a mix of young and old. If you don't have a reservation you can eat outside. The menu is different but I want to bring my kids.

Yelp
REVIEW FOR BAGELS FOR THEIR MORNING SERVICE: Coming off their Michelin star from Heritage, Olive and Rose has been one of the most anticipated openings in Long Beach this year. I hope to come for dinner service in the near future, but this review is for their morning service from 8a-1:30p on Tuesday through Saturday. During that time, they sell bagels and coffee. Media and influencers have been highlighting the $100 bagel featuring 1oz of caviar and cream cheese. Though people balk at the price tag, which does garner attention, it does seem like a fair deal if you are into caviar; however, that's not really why I came here. I came for a good bagel and lox. On the other end of the 710 freeway in Los Angeles, elevated bagel experiences have been generating a ton of buzz at Courage Bagels and Layla's Bagels. It's good to see the trend making an appearance at Olive and Rose here in Long Beach. I ordered their gravilox. The bagel was nicely toasted. The cream cheese was definitely not Philadelphia's. It was very creamy and you could see fresh shavings of lemon zest. The salmon was not from a package either - the cubed lox tasted great over the creamy creamed cheese. I also appreciated that they were not cheap with the dill, capers, and red onions, which balanced out the flavors with herbal, lemony, and briny notes. Service was self-service for utensils and water, but they deliver the food and coffee that you order. Given that it located that the City Center hotel, it has the perfect 2020 mix of retro with modern day style. I'm confident that as it transforms into a modern French bistro for dinner service, the vibes are completely different at night; however, I loved this laid-back breakfast experience that made me feel as if I was having a staycation in the 70s in LB.

Yelp
Really neat mid century vibe by keeping the original facade of the building! Drinks are tasty but on the weak side. We shared a salad, the pork dish and the fish dish (sorry forgot the names). Pork was done really perfectly whilst the fish ended up on the dry side. Servers are all nice, attention, and dressed very clean. Cute date night place but can get pretty noisy

Yelp
We went for dinner for our first time Friday at 8p. The building has been completely updated and the building is actually a Sonder, which is kind of a tech forward upgrade to old motels. You can see the lobby on the 3rd st side of the building. Whole place looks updated and refreshed. The restaurant actually sits where the old carport was -they filled it in to create the dining room with its intimate and retro feel. I had studied the menu before arriving so we knew exactly what we were going to order: Bread and cultured butter (and we added the 3 cheese plate to this). 4 big pieces of fresh bread from hey brother baker and I believe the cheese is from Oh La Vache - both local long beach places. Endive salad with dates & Humboldt fog - the most surprising dish of the night! Enough to share for 2 people and wow, was it good. Probably the most unique dish I've had all year. I got the pork with grilled lettuce and he got the aged rib cap with frites au poivre. I read the fries that come with the rib cap were "like McDonald's fries but better" and they weren't kidding! Both were cooked perfectly. Dessert was the burnt marshmallow ice cream with honeycomb. Outstanding. Wish all ice cream had crunchy things like honeycomb in it. Side note: they do not yet have their liquor license but was told they should by 11.21. And no, you can't bring your own wine until then. Small detail which is understandable for a new business. I heard that their cocktail menu is already set and ready to go once their license comes through. Also, they had 2 options for seating for the reso: standard or "chefs counter". We prefer an actual table so we chose the standard and glad we did. The chefs counter is in the actual kitchen, separate from the dining room and I believe there were 4-6 seats, like a diner would have. Definitely recommend you check this place out. Dinner for 2 with no alcohol was $187, so it is on the pricier side but another great option for a date night. What a welcomed addition to a former empty space.

Yelp
I've had my eye on Heritage in Long Beach for a while now, but I was hesitant to try it because of the hefty price tag of the tasting menu. When I found out that the owners were opening Olive & Rose, I had to try it. My husband and I went for our anniversary, and the service was fantastic. They really made it special for us. We were seated at a cute table by the window, and we got a front row seat to view the cool vintage motel aesthetic they were going for outside. The food was delicious. We started with the bread and salted butter, and we loved it. We ordered the tartare and the amberjack crudo as our appetizers. Then we shared the steak frites as our main. The steak was cooked perfectly and the fries were like a gourmet version of McDonald's fries. So good! We also loved the chocolate passionfruit tart for dessert. We will definitely be back. Can't wait until they have their liquor license so we can have these amazing dishes with wine.

Yelp
We were excited to dine at Olive and Rose, the sister restaurant of Heritage (which boasts a Michelin star). Located inconspicuously at the front of City Center motel on Atlantic in Long Beach, you would have to know where it is in order to locate it. The only option is street parking so plan ahead. The service is excellent from the minute you approach the front door. We chose to sit at the counter cuz we love to observe the chefs in action. The vibe is energetic and the team hustles to meticulously prepare the meals. There's great chemistry among the staff. The menu is not extensive but plenty of delicacies to sample. We were famished and thus ordered three cheeses and bread with cultured butter. Simple but a quick way to settle in. NOTE: the liquor license is pending but we enjoyed the alcohol-free drinks. Soft arms was a tasty cold brew and tonic concoction. The queensway bay was a refreshing passion fruit based cocktail. I was imagining how good these will be once some alcohol is added to the recipes! Amberjack crudo was fresh and complimented with cucumber and (I believe) tart apple mini balls and grape. It was garnished nicely and had a surprising explosion of flavor. The endive salad with dates and Humboldt fog was epic--refreshing and a large portion to share. It is artistically presented as well. For the main dish, we sampled the Iberico pork shoulder and grilled lettuce. We marveled as it was prepared in front of us. The pork was tender and flavorful. Grilled lettuce is not something I usually crave but it was a perfect partner to the pork. For dessert, the apple tart with cream fraiche whip was out of this world. Very crisp and spiced well. Only wish it was bigger. Definitely will return and I'm eager to try the other mains.

Yelp
*O & R BAGELS REVIEW* Did I really spend $21 on a bagel breakfast meal? I sure did. And as a treat, it was surely worth it. I ordered the Smoked Salmon on a sesame bagel and it was really friggen good. It was so beautiful as well. They didn't just slap the ingredients on the bagel. It was.. dare I say.. crafted together lol. I liked how the smoked salmon was kind of smashed with the eggs. The dill and cilantro along with pickled red onions was also really refreshing. The flavors came together for a nice little harmony, making it feel like they were all meant to be together. So, for the price, the taste and presentation made it. I of course had to order the Matcha Latte with oatmilk and it was good. I didn't give it 5 stars just because the price is pretty wild. The place itself is small, but newly renovated. Cute, simple decor. Really nice plating! I do love the color scheme of neutrals, soft pink and green. The retro feel is cool. I almost felt like I was in a movie while I was in there. Where to order was a little confusion because I wasn't sure if just walked into the kitchen on accident or walked into the courtyard/pool area of the motel instead. Once I found the cashier, she was really sweet. Utensils, water, napkins and to-go containers are all self service- giving it a more casual/easy feel. Came here on a Tuesday morning around 830am. It was quiet and quaint. I would like to try the tomato and cucumber bagel next.

Yelp
Was sooooo excited for Olive & Rose to open- love. Heritage and Heritage Farm. The space is small, but nicely done- it is in a retro hotel that has been renovated, but isn't open yet. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated right away and given water... after this it was probably 15 minutes and no one came to talk with us. I finally asked if we could order drinks. One of the helpers came to take our order.. They do not yet have a liquor license so it is all non-alcoholic wine and cocktails. I tried the cuvee which wasn't bad, my boyfriend had the Soft Arms which he didn't like, cold brew was strange in a fruit drink! Our waiter came over and informed us that even though someone else took our order, he would be our main waiter- it felt like a gentle scolding, but he then went on to say that anyone could help us so.....wasn't sure why he scolded us. We started with the warm olives with lemon and rosemary-- which were yummy and the bread and cultured butter, also good. Next. we had the amberjack crudo --my favorite dish of the night. The amberjack was fresh and perfect and the cucumber and grapes were a perfect and bright compliment. The octopus was a miss for me, I'm not a huge mayo fan and it overwhelmed the dish. For our mains we had the black cod, too salty for me to eat and the rib cap with frites- which was delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful and the frites so good! I had the. N/a red with the rib cap and it was not good- it tasted like the grape juice they give you in church. We ended with the burnt marshmallow ice cream with honeycomb crisps- first time having burnt marshmallow ice cream and it was good. They don't have tea either, which I was bummed about...my BF had an espresso-- which he said was too fruity. Overall there were some good dishes and I would go back once they get their liquor license. It didn't feel like a Friday night date spot to me, due to the slow service start and no wine or cocktails, but would be a good spot for a quick weeknight bite.

Yelp
Highly recommend. The food is exceptional and it's a fun place to visit when you want a special meal without being over-the-top fancy. Just over-the-top good!!!

Yelp
Came here last night for dinner and we enjoyed our meal! Ordered quite a bit of food and sat at the chef's counter. 1) bread and butter x 2 = this was $9 per order and it comes with 4 pieces of bread. Very expensive but the bread was so good that we ordered this twice! 2) whole lobster cooked 2 ways entree - must get, so good 3) rib cap steak entree - delicious 4) octopus appetizer - awesome! Nicely done 5) mussels appetizer - decent but did not stand out 6) amberjack crudo - this was so refreshing 7) mint stracciatella dessert - great way to end our meal 8) queensway bay non alcoholic drink - tasty! $12 9) smog strangler non alcoholic drink - smooth $12 Reservations were easy for a weeknight. Located inside a motel. Parking available on the street.

Yelp
Very unique space for a restaurant in downtown Long Beach, inside a retro motel. The menu is pretty limited which in some ways is good - do a few things well. But it also may make it less likely that diners will return to try something new. The very good: octopus salad, chicken and mushrooms and the Little Kicks cocktail (hints of chocolate and a dark, warm taste). The ok: Amberjack crudo. This was interesting but just not memorable. I will say that I am a woman who loves salt. Give me a salt block and I am happy! BUT the octopus and chicken were over-salted. If they cut the added salt in half it would be perfect. Oh, and give yourself time to find parking. It's on the street with a lot of apartments in the area.

Yelp
Amazing dinner experience. I will definitely be going back whenever I can! The service was as good as the food, and that's saying something, because the food was Michelin star -level of good. Add this place to your list!

Yelp
I've been saying Long Beach really needs even one *really* great bagel shop for the past decade to anyone who will listen (my reference being a wonderful place in NorCal called The Bagelry that I miss being hundreds of miles from, if you're ever in Santa Cruz) - so when I heard Olive & Rose had set up to open in the day as a fancy bagel place starting a couple months ago, I was pretty excited by the news... until I saw their prices ($9 for a bagel with a basic savory spread, 14 with jam, 18-19 for the fancier stuff), that mostly being why I hadn't gotten around to checking them out until yesterday, when they had their "grand opening". (As far as the "grand opening", while I'm absolutely not *knocking* them that their social media people didn't talk to their menu people, it was a bit *weird* that they were advertising unspecified "bagel specials" all over the internet in the week leading up to it, which when I got to the front of the line, turned out to be "we don't know what that meant either".) But since I was already there and had stood in a long line, I figured it was my chance to try them, so I ordered a bagel and a half (I *do* like that you can mix and match half-bagels of the fancier ones, for not much difference in price.) I'm *also* not knocking them at all for the fact that there was a long line to order that day, or it took about half an hour after ordering to get a bagel, because again, it was their grand opening and word had clearly gotten out about it. They have a good amount of seating, and deliver your food to you when it's ready, but only have one register for taking orders, and you can only order food/drink from that register - but presumably under more normal circumstances that wouldn't be much of a bottleneck. (Though, while they do have a proper bar, since they're the same space as full-service Olive & Rose in the evening, that is the reason I didn't end up trying their bloody mary while I was waiting yesterday: because I would've had to stand in a long line again. I did try their matcha latte, which was great - entirely reasonably priced at $7, and I appreciated that there was no additional charge to make it with oat milk.) Anyway, while their menu is way more limited than The Bagelry both in terms of the bagels themselves (they only have plain and mixed poppy/sesame seed) and just a handful of spread/sandwich options, and for about 2-3x as expensive... I definitely don't have any complaints about how tasty the food was. Great bagel, perfectly toasted, and both the cream cheese spread and the whitefish were loaded with plenty of spread and, in the case of the fancier one, fresh veggies. (I also ended up with an extra half-bagel of the whitefish due to a mistake on their part, which I wasn't complaining about.) Great cream cheese (though the onion was fairly subtle - I could see coming back to try their one other flavor, black garlic and chive), great whitefish, great veggies, and on a great bagel (from a bagel place in Costa Mesa, Boil & Bake.) Just a little pricey - basically, I'd say, if you want a place where you can order a fancy bagel sandwich while drinking a beer or cocktail, come here (there aren't too many other options for that in the area, and the food here is indeed quite good.) If you just want a good bagel, though, go to 5th Ave Bagelry, get them from the source and save a few bucks.

Yelp
Olive and Rose was such a treat! I went with my makeup team for our annual holiday party. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff. You can tell they were proud of where they worked! When we were seated, we were given complimentary virgin champagne and caviar bumps! Both tasted amazing! The champagne had the perfect amount of subtle sweet and the caviar had a comforting butteriness to it. We felt so taken care of and so celebrated. When all of our entrees and appetizers came out, we wanted more! We couldn't get enough of the amberjack crudo and beef tartare. Also, the bread was so soft and perfect with the salty butter, we had to take some home! I highly recommend the iberico pork shoulder... Savory heaven! If you love meat, you have to order the frites au poivre -- the steak was cooked to perfection and the fries were crispy and addicting! My only complaint is there weren't enough. Lastly, the wild striped bass had crispy skin and was tender on the inside. All the flavors tied in well with the pommes purée and green sauce. 10/10 -- 100% recommend!

Yelp
While I was a tad disappointed that they still have not received their alcohol license which also apparently means one can not bring wine from home, the meal was fabulous. We did their bread & butter and OMG the whipped French butter was salted perfectly and at room temp. Moved onto the steak tartare which also comes with 3 slices of toast (same as the bread, so kind of thick). The portion is good for two people and the capers really give it a nice zesty tasty along with the arugala on top. I wondered if just a drop of mustard would be a nice addition. Onto the steak, which they offer at only their temp but it is medium rare so lots of pink that cooks slowly away. The french fries are good as others have written about, but I was too in love with the butter and bread to indulge in that. We had also ordered dessert at the start which was really creamy - the ice cream. My bad in thinking we were getting real honeycombs but the man made ones were crunchy and sweet. We were also very enthused about the coffee - yea, they had decaf and not surprisingly rich cream on the side. Service was very good as no one took a plate away without asking and no one took just one person's plate away while the other was still eating. Sonder has redone this motel and it is so cute being poolside. One downside is that apparently there is a doorway that can not be closed so it can get a bit chilly inside. They do have some blankets if need be, but that feels like I returned to Covid land.

Yelp
If it were possible to assign zero stars, I would--without hesitation. As a Long Beach native and guest of the adjoining hotel, I had hoped for a warm, hospitable dining experience. Instead, I was met with a baffling display of exclusion and poor judgment--one that left a particularly bitter aftertaste. Upon arriving, I inquired--politely--about a seat for dinner. The restaurant, at this time, was visibly under capacity: tables sparsely occupied, and a fully set, completely vacant counter. Rather than being welcomed or even engaged in good faith, I was immediately asked if I had a reservation. I explained that I was a hotel guest and would love to dine solo at the counter. The host--who, at best, was curt and dismissive--responded that she'd need to "check" the reservation system, as if I'd requested a seat at the chef's private residence rather than an empty bar in a public restaurant. She returned minutes later only to inform me there were "no openings"--a mystifying conclusion, considering the wide expanse of empty tables and untouched counter space that surrounded us. I stood there, quite literally in front of a sea of unclaimed seats, being told there was "no room." In a city known for its diverse and dynamic culinary scene, this place managed to feel strangely inhospitable--bordering on performative. I won't speculate openly on what was truly at play here, but I will say this: no restaurant worth its salt turns away a quiet, solo diner with money to spend and genuine enthusiasm to try the food, especially when the house is half-empty. I had come excited by the reputation of Heritage, but this offshoot seems to have inherited none of its soul. Hospitality should never feel like a favor. I won't return--and I won't recommend it.

Yelp
I'm mixed on this place. It's an eclectic vibe and the staff is friendly!!! But... the reservations system needs help!!! And management's attention. I tired last week for a 4 top or more... I invited a group of locals... they stopped me from getting a 5 or more... I decided to limit me guest list... we took the 4 top... 3 showed up... but the restaurant was pretty empty on a Thursday night. Had I got a larger table reservation I would've been able to invite more friends... hence more customers- hello The food is good and solid... NOT great for the prices and BITE SIZED portion... sadly I was warned either eat BEFORE or AFTER... and I agree I hope they do fix the terrible reservation system Best of luck!!! And ALWAYS support small business owners!!! PS... $9 bucks for 4 slices of bread for my mussels... didn't even come with one piece with the dish... TACKY!!! Rethink that... tempt me with one piece so I want more and order more.. not to even give one with the dish... yup TACKY!!!

Yelp
This restaurant is located in a boutique hotel. It has a retro vibe. We made our reservations when we went. We had to wait for our table but not for long. While waiting you can sit at the outdoor seating area. There's also a window to order cocktails, which is pretty cool. Food were really good with wonderful service. We would definitely come back.

Yelp
Olive and Rose is an absolute gem. We started with the crudo fresh, vibrant, and beautifully balanced along with the octopus with potato & pimento, which was tender and full of smoky flavor. The endive with dates & Humboldt Fog salad was a perfect mix of crisp, sweet, and tangy. For the main, I had the Local Halibut with Gold Risotto, Snap Pea & Pea Tendril and added truffle... and it was simply incredible. Every bite was rich, creamy, and perfectly cooked, with the truffle taking it to the next level. An amazing dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommend!

Yelp
You will not be disappointed by the craftsmanship of the food and the attention to detail. It's always an adventure to the palette. Beautiful space with a retro vibe. Furniture is comfortable and plenty of space. Staff is extremely knowledgeable about the wonderful food that they serve. Small menu, but crafted with detail and attention. Highly recommend this place. Remember, it's downtown Long Beach. There is no parking at this establishment that we saw. Would recommend a rideshare or plan for parking.

Yelp
I found a cute video on TikTok telling me about this place and its mid-century vibes. So I got in the car and drove right over. They're not ready for me just yet I'll come back in two weeks once they have their alcohol license. I saw they have salmon caviar dish , can't wait to try that ! I did try the passionfruit chocolate tart so good so many different textures huge fan of passionfruit. I love those grainy little seeds. The staff was so cool. I'm definitely coming back.

Yelp
Fabulous cocktails. Appetizers of amberjack crudo and steak tartare were so delicious. Halibut and kurobuta pork chop entrees were just as amazing! Don't skip dessert; try the chocolate cake/chocolate mousse for a luscious end.

Yelp
The food was undeniably excellent. I had the octopus, which was perfectly cooked and flavorful, while my husband enjoyed the chicken (though he found it a bit salty, which is just his personal preference). The staff were friendly and attentive, which we appreciated. The space is an intimate, trendy vibe. It felt like we were transported to Palm Springs in the heart of downtown Long Beach. However, my overall experience was disappointing due to dietary restrictions. I am gluten and dairy free and made this clear when booking through OpenTable. The waitress impressed me by acknowledging she knew there were food allergies for someone in my party and pointed out what I could eat. Unfortunately, the only options available were the olive plate and the octopus salad--both appetizers. None of the mains could be modified due to the chef's inflexibility, but what stood out most was the lack of a goodwill gesture. Offering the $8 olive plate complimentary, or a drink on the house to help supplement my limited choices. This small effort would have gone a long way. The lack of accommodation, despite flagging my allergies in advance, felt dismissive. In 2025, with so many people navigating dietary restrictions, a little flexibility should be standard.

Yelp
Nice Small inside/outside seating, we would have love to sit at the kitchen counter, maybe next time for dinner. But lunch was great, we pretty much had the whole menu between my wife and I. Small plates just enough to share. Service was a little slow, for not being that busy.

Yelp
What gem of a place. Dining experience was wonderful. The entire staff is very attentive to dining pacing, presentation, and to all details in the dining experience. The staff is very good about watching for diner needs and not intruding too much. If you get up from the table, they fold your napkin. When you finish a course, they clean the table, not just clear it. Fine dining at this price point is a find, I highly recommend trying your next meal here.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible restaurant. First off, the service was impeccable. We were greeted at the entrance, our waters were constantly refilled, waitresses checked on us frequently but not too much for it to be annoying, they answered all of our questions with patience, timed the food perfectly, and were overall very friendly. The food though...was unbelievable. We went as a group so we ordered one of everything on the menu to try everything. I wish I could say some dishes were my favorite, but I can't because everything was absolutely perfect. Every single dish was cooked to perfection and had amazing flavor. If I really had to choose, I guess I'd say the crudo, tartare, chicken, and apple tart stood out to me, but genuinely every single dish was breathtakingly perfect. They also even had a kids menu for our little one that came with us! The only thing to note is that they still are working on getting their liquor license, so they don't have any alcohol. But we all had some NA cocktails and wine, which were also all amazing. Additionally, the restaurant is semi-outdoors and got a little chilly, so I would dress accordingly. Overall, this is by far one of the best restaurants in Long Beach and I wouldn't be surprised if this one gets a Michelin star too! Definitely stop by for dinner if you get the chance!

Yelp
What a cute little bistro! I loved everything about it...from the welcome drink to the ambience to the service. I came alone as I was visiting the area for a conference and felt very welcome. I had the crudo, which was unforgettable. And the endive salad, which was lovely. And the sea bass, which was slightly over salted, but truly delectable. It came with a lovely green risotto. I'd eat it again and again. Everything was fresh and beautifully plated. The wine list was thoughtful and refined. The only problem is that it is so far away and I cannot go back regularly!

Yelp
Like so many other customers, I wanted to like this place. Seeing as how I've been a LB local for over 12 years I love to see the evolution of the cities historic spots. The 2 stars is mostly for the renovation vibes and the hosts hospitality at dinner, but otherwise I was severely disappointed. -Dinner - sad to find out they do not accommodate food restrictions at all. I'm gluten and dairy free which is not uncommon these days. For someone who is trying to elevate the food scene it feels logical to consider this as a modern chef. But they won't omit or substitute ANYTHING. Instead I had to tippy toe around what I could order and ate overpriced olives and a couple bites of the only seafood option I had. I came for my birthday, so that was a bummer. Drinks are about $20 each. I left having paid $80 and not satisfied. The hostess was nice and new renovation was cute but that's all I can say. -Bagels- over priced and unimpressed. My husband loves bagels so went back for him but again, no options for anyone with diet restrictions. Was fine with that since I already expected it based on my dinner experience and was excited to just try a Matcha Latte. To my disappointment they only had dairy milk and oat as options so I couldn't try that with my diet. They offered to make it with water and it was luke warm and a bummer. My husband was also disappointed with his $22 bagel, and said it was overpriced and unimpressive. For that price wed could have a full breakfast as Ubuntu, The Grain Cafe, or ZuZu's- great high quality breakfast spots. I just had higher hopes for such an expensive spot. :(

Yelp
Nice small plate choices available on the pool deck. I am a fan of mussels and these were the most tender and plum I have ever had!! Very accommodating and friendly staff. Excellent craft cocktails, beer & wine selection. Small gem right in the neighborhood. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Please update your hours Drove all the way out on a Saturday--signage on door/website says you should have been open but rolled up to discover you were closed. No note or anything to let visitors know that you would not be open during advertised hours. Guy at the hotel lobby was not particularly nice when we asked about the hours as well...

Denise C.

Yelp
Small restaurant but the entrees were superb. Ordered some appetizers and they were fine. We then ordered the Octopus with potato & pimento and my friend ordered the chicken with foraged mushrooms & jus. Could not believe the amount of flavor in each dish. Presentation was also beautiful. We shared the apple tarte train for dessert. I am not a sweets person but this was very well balanced with flavor. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
The Gravlax and Smoked Whitefish open-faced bagels were fantastic! and the Matcha latte was unforgettable...A real gem in Long Beach.
