Nestled in a revamped mid-century motel, Olive & Rose is a charming neo-bistro by the Pretty siblings, serving elevated French dishes and zero-waste bagels in a vibrant, laid-back setting.
"Olive & Rose is a peaceful slice of Palm Springs in the middle of Downtown Long Beach. This relaxed French-leaning bistro from the Heritage folks sits on the ground floor of a revamped mid-century motel, with tables gazing onto a courtyard pool and retro parasols. You’d never guess this was a hotel restaurant, though. It oozes the kind of easy charm found at a proper date night spot. Start with the artfully arranged amberjack crudo that has little spheres of grape and cucumber, then split the steak frites with a ribeye cap that melts like soft butter and a cute bowl of crispy fries. And maybe a sauve prickly pear and jasmine martini for dessert. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Garrett Snyder
"Chef Phillip Pretty and sister Lauren Pretty have opened their third Long Beach restaurant, Olive & Rose, named after Phillip’s daughters, as a follow-up to their Michelin-starred tasting menu restaurant Heritage. Olive & Rose follows an approachable French bistro model, with starters like amberjack crudo, endive salad, and beef tartare followed by steak frites and black cod brandade. The midcentury modern space features walnut furniture, forest green banquettes, and lovely natural light for a welcome dose of polished California French cooking in Long Beach. — Matthew Kang, lead editor" - Eater Staff
"The sibling duo behind Long Beach tasting menu spot Heritage now has a second (more casual) restaurant nearby called Olive & Rose. Located inside a revamped historic motel, O&R operates as a daytime bagel shop where you can order sandwiches stacked with gravlax, avocado, or an ounce of caviar if you care to drop $100 on breakfast. After 5pm, the French-leaning dinner menu kicks in, with beef tartare, endive salad, and dry-aged steak frites." - sylvio martins
"The new restaurant by siblings Philip Pretty and Lauren Pretty at the refurbished City Center Hotel. It will offer a shareable menu with seasonal produce, oysters, steak tartare, and steak frites for dinner, described as a neo-bistro." - Eater Staff
