Omakase Room By Tadayoshi - Review - Downtown - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Omakase Room, a sushi restaurant with locations in New York and Chicago, has opened a new outpost Downtown. At the 12-seat omakase counter, chef Tadayoshi Motoa offers 20 courses for $200. There are two seatings per night, at 6:00 and 8:30." - Omnia Saed

Inside Downtown D.C.’s Daring New Omakase Room | Eater DC

"A sleek 12-seat omakase counter inside the historic Federal-American National Bank building, this downtown newcomer centers on a 20-course, $200 tasting with two nightly seatings (6 p.m., 8:30 p.m.). Led by Tadayoshi Motoa—making his first stateside stint after helming Spain’s one-Michelin-starred Toki—the experience begins with a compartmentalized platter of sashimi, shiokara, karaage, and chawanmushi, then six coursed pieces of nigiri finished with a paintbrush stroke of house-made soy (think squid/cuttlefish, lean tuna, marinated trout, scallop, and namerou). Warm tempura and a cup of dashi swimming with seasonal ingredients follow, then a parade of more nigiri like uni, marinated akami, and o-toro, capped by a refreshing, wobbling barley-tea gelatin dessert. He works with high-grade tuna flown in from Japan and two distinct shari recipes—one traditional with classic vinegar reflecting the ancient Edomae lineage and one modern vinegar—while Mediterranean influence shows in expertly sheared pickled cucumber subbing in for wasabi. A simple clam soup tells the story of his coastal hometown near Tokyo. The slim, light-wood setup sets a minimalist stage for theatrical, highly interactive service marked by a wide smile and laugh. Premium sake, wine pairings, and zero-proof options round out the menu, with ornate vessels on display and a list ranging from accessible unfiltered Nigori ($65) to the splurge-worthy Tsugu from Niigata ($850). Opposite the counter, a forthcoming Tatami Room offers a zen, communal nook, and reservations are available via Resy or OpenTable." - Tierney Plumb

The Most Exciting D.C. Restaurant Openings to Look Forward to This Fall | Eater DC

"Tadayoshi Motoa, the tenured sushi chef behind Spain’s one-Michelin-starred Toki, makes a stateside debut with a tiny 12-seat counter inside the historic Federal-American National Bank building, centering a 20-course omakase accented by premium sake, curated wine pairings, and zero-proof options." - Tierney Plumb

This is the omakase I’ll be thinking about for weeks—and one I’d happily fly in for just to have another bite. The first five courses drop you straight into the heart of traditional Japanese dining, with small, artfully presented dishes that subtly stimulate and set your palate for the sushi course. I loved the daikon with lime zest and comforting chawanmushi with crab - a silky, savory Japanese steamed custard. For the nigiris that followed, I was just closing my eyes and shaking my head in joy. Each bite was precise, delicate and full of flavor. Some melted on the tongue, some were tender with a satisfying bounce, and others had a delicate firmness that made each bite a small surprise. The most unforgettable part was the rice—it’s pleasantly al dente, and each grain added a satisfying mouthfeel. Miso-marinated trout and scallops—mind-blowing. You have to taste them to understand why. The chef was quiet at times, letting the food speak for itself, but whenever I asked, he explained everything with care. Omakase (お任せ) means ‘I’ll leave it up to you’—the willingness to go with the chef’s style and direction. This was the place I chose to do exactly that. Looking forward to the next visit.

Google
Very enjoyable experience. Sushi rice was outstanding, especially chef Tadayoshi’s modern rice which had an excellent sweet and salty flavor. He gives a taste of the rice alone for this and the traditional rice he makes. We had the distinction of being served by Chef Tadayoshi and it felt less austere than other sushi counter experiences in the past. When asking about marinade technique on a sushi he explained his technique and how to achieve at home (although I think I would not be as successful). He even took a picture with us at the end. Combinations of flavor and fish were great. Especially enjoyed the scallop. Beautiful Maine and Santa Barbara sea urchin combination. Dishes were on beautiful plating and the ambiance was nice with wood. Get there earlier for seats closer to the chef. It was our anniversary and staff were kind to recognize and wish us well. The music was a bit stiff and was more classical which felt a little off but not terrible. Price was well worth it for the meal and experience. Would recommend.

First class experience, lucky enough to get a seat on opening night. The staff and Chef Tadayoshi Motoa did not disappoint. Excellent atmosphere, very attentive staff, engaging chef. Very happy with the food and the experience!

Google
Absolutely sublime omakase. Chef Tadayoshi curates a warm, inviting experience that not only delights the palate but brings you closer to the cuisine through two varieties of sushi rice, modern and traditional, each paired with a variety of fish. The drinks offered were also top class — we tried a few different glasses of sake and plum wine that were all unique. Some standouts in the nigiri were the uni (best we have had), a marinated trout that surprised us, and of course a few tuna cuts that were fabulous. If this is your type of experience, I would not hesitate to try it out

Google
Omakase Tadayoshi has been super hyped since the moment it opened so we were excited to give it a try. Unfortunately cannot say we loved it. A couple was late for our seating so we started almost 20min late. If a party is not there at start time, the meal should commence for those who did arrive early/ on time. The staff was very kind and attentive and Chef was clearly knowledgeable and a master at his work. Unfortunately the food left much to be desired. There were a few pieces of nigiri which were memorable but overall there seemed to lack creativity/wow moments. The five-piece starter plate and warm dishes were very linear. Almost all lacked layers of flavor/umami. The prawn/mushroom soup simply lacked salt period. We appreciated the efficiency of the meal (under 2 hours for 20 courses) but the meal itself in turn felt simple. Every piece of fish was already pre-cut/ ready for our seating. It's one thing to taste clean, but the non-sushi courses just tasted too simple. Another example - dessert was a very simple pre-made barley tea jelly. Unlike most other omakase we've been to, there was zero education on the fish we were consuming. There was a bit of education on the two types of sushi rice. We were not full at the end of the meal. As this is priced a bit higher than almost all other omakase in the city, it just didn't quite rise to that bar.

Google
Wonderful experience. Chef Tadayoshi stays fairly close to traditional omakase service yet subtly incorporates influences from the many places he has lived and worked around the world, including a nod to local Maryland crab :) High quality fish, excellent presentation, and superior service combined for a very memorable evening. Go enjoy it before it gets too popular to make a reservation!

Google
This sushi restaurant offers more reasonable prices compared to others. For just $200, you can enjoy a variety of 20 dishes. The fish quality is just as good as at other top sushi places. The chef is friendly and engaging, making our dining experience enjoyable.

Yelp
Came here for a belated birthday dinner with my wife, and it was a pretty enjoyable experience. My wife made the reservation on Resy and it was a little challenging to find availability. That's why I went over 2 weeks after my actual birthday. We found parking on the street and walked a couple blocks to get to the restaurant. Having gotten there early, we were led to our seats after waiting in the lobby area for a little bit. The place looked very nice and intimate. There was a private room behind our seats, and we were told they would open that up for private dinners next year. We spoke with the chefs briefly as we waited for guests to arrive. Chef Tadayoshi and the staff were very friendly. I ordered a non alcoholic Yuzu sparkling drink, and that was really refreshing. The meal started with a 5 dish platter that was really delicious. My favorites from this were probably the amberjack and the daikon radish. Next we did the modern take nigiri pieces, and my favorite would have to be the scallop. It was a generous cut and it tasted so good! Then there was a warm dish, with the sea bass, mushroom, and snow pea. The bass and the mushroom were delectable! Later came the classic pieces of nigiri, and I had a lot of favorites from this part of the meal. The gizzard shad is my favorite fish pretty much every place I go to. Also memorable were the uni, and the otoro. The meal finished with a shrimp soup and a barley tea jelly dessert. All in all, it was a pretty good omakase. I will say that if I didn't ask questions, or talk with the chefs and diners, it would have been very quiet. The chef tells us the name of the dish, but not much detail is provided into how the fish are prepared, unless you ask. They play classical music in the background, which is nice. I'm glad I gave this place a try. It was an overall good experience.

Yelp
I went to Omakase Room by Tadayoshi and it was good overall, but I'm not sure it's worth the $200 price. The fish quality was great, and I liked that the slices were thick. The rice had really good flavor but could have been a bit softer to get that perfect balance with the fish. My favorite pieces were the chutoro, otoro, and uni. The flavors throughout the meal were really nice and got better as the courses went on. The octopus and squid had good flavor too, but they were super chewy. The shrimp in the soup was a little overcooked. Service was excellent, very attentive and friendly. One small suggestion would be to have a tea light candle under the hot tea so it stays warm during the meal. Overall, I enjoyed the experience but probably wouldn't go back for the price. Still, it's a solid omakase spot to try at least once if you're exploring the DC sushi scene.
