Five stars for the Bloody Mary's themselves! And the food is right up there with the Bloody's. And let's be honest, you're most likely coming here for the Bloody Mary's.
Nestled into the ivy on St. Paul Ave. in a legacy Schlitz tavern, Sobelman's is serving up some good bar and grill fare along with the Bloody's. You're in Wisconsin, so why not sample the sausage, the cheese curds, and the beer? Anything less and you can get it somewhere else.
But you must try a Bloody Mary. I sampled the Cheesehead, a strong Mary with bacon-wrapped jalapeño cheese curds. Chased with a Miller Lite, this is a sensational Sunday morning treat. As you go down the menu of bloody Mary options, just know that the garnishes increase as you go. The Bourbonado, replete with bacon-wrapped chicken laced with a bourbon sauce, hits nicely, sweet and tangy. As a table, we just had to try the Bloody Beast, which, be forewarned, takes a while to prepare. Aside from just about any other garnish on the menu, it is an entire fryer chicken, breaded, deep-fried, and anchored in the center of a sturdy pitcher. A pitcher of Miller Lite chaser comes with, and this is easily shared amongst five people, maybe more. We added on a sausage sampler basket with a housemade mustard and a cheese sauce and this was just Wisconsin made-to-order. The owner, Melanie, gave us a brief rundown of the building's history and how Sobelman's came to be, and take the time to learn the story.
Stop for a beer, but stay for the Mary's. It is so worth the visit!
