"A century-old bakery at 308 E. 78th Street, at Second Avenue, was purchased by Brooklyn-based real estate company Peak Capital for $14.6 million, Crain’s reports. Abram Orwasher, the grandson of founder Abraham Orwasher, sold the property. Crain’s reports that it’s "unclear" what Peak’s plans are for the building’s 35 rental apartments or its 3,250-square-foot commercial space occupied by the bakery and the restaurant Heidi’s House. Founded in 1916 and known for its black-and-white cookies, babka, and rugelach, as well as breads like rye and pumpernickel, the bakery remained in the family until 2008 when Keith Cohen bought it and expanded to the Upper West Side and beyond beginning in 2016." - Melissa McCart
"Both the UES and UWS locations of Orwashers Bakery are offering Thanksgiving pie pickup between November 25 through November 28. They make their pecan pie with maple syrup and a touch of orange zest, which sounds like an ideal breakfast slice to us. They've got apple honey cake too, as well as pumpkin and apple pies." - hannah albertine, carina finn koeppicus, molly fitzpatrick
"“They have a loaf of bread—I don't know what the f*ck it's called—but it's got raisins and quinoa. I like that just for a touch of sweetness with your eggs. And then I like to get a Sunday Surprise [cookie] that I keep in my microwave. It's got that crunchy, salty pretzel right in the middle. I'll just pick at it for two, three days. My dog Lulu, I would take her down to doggie daycare, Camp Canine, and then I'd walk her home. When you're walking up Amsterdam, it literally is a great cookie on every single block, and it's hard not to just pop in and grab one. I call it Devil’s Alley. Look what I did today: I stopped at Daily Provisions. They have this really good chocolate chip sort of caramel number. That'll be going in the microwave as soon as I have a break. There's also Janie's Life Changing Baked Goods. There's not a miss in that place. They live up to the hype. I think I heard them talked about on Watch What Happens Live. I was like, ‘Wait, that's right by my house.’ I get one for me and one for my doorman. It keeps a smile on everybody's face.”" - brennan carley
"If you’re uptown and looking for something sweet that doesn’t require pre-heating your oven, Orwashers is open on the UES and UWS. They serve cakes, Jewish pastries, some great almond croissants, and black and white cookies that will make you briefly think you’ve reached cookie enlightenment." - hannah albertine
"A coworker told us that Orwashers on the UES was her favorite bakery in NYC, and after trying this, we now trust this coworker to do things like babysit children, pay back loans, or pardon a turkey. For Purim this year, Orwashers has hamantaschen filled with apricot, raspberry, and prune, but you don’t have to choose just one since they sell a half-pound of assorted hamantaschen for $12. They also make one of the flakiest almond croissants you can eat in this city. In case you’re on the UWS, Orwashers also has a location there. Preorder or get for delivery here." - hannah albertine
