Osteria Alla Concorrenza - Review - Porta Venezia - Milan - The Infatuation

"Retro tiles and glasses of Spanish Xarello provide a refuge on Via Melzo, a street full of trendy openings and rowdy university students on a night out. From the team behind Trippa (the most coveted dinner reservation in town), Osteria Alla Concorrenza has all the spirit of a classic osteria folded into Milan’s modern wine scene. A dozen or so wines are scribbled on a chalkboard, but the cellar has a full selection of natural and small-producer wines from Italy, Spain, and France. There are a ton of bites, like focaccia sandwiches and crostoni, but the best option is a pre-dinner snack of tagliere misto plus an order of giardiniera. It’s the kind of place you drop in for one glass and end up staying for a few more after meeting locals." - Margaret Ross

The 37 Best Restaurants in Milan, Italy | Eater

"Chef Diego Rossi of Trippa (also on this list) shares his love for offal and cucina povera (peasant food) at Osteria Alla Concorrenza. Beef cartilage, pastissada di cavallo (horse meat stew), caponata, and a handful of crostini are some of the simple Italian dishes that jovial servers deliver on paper plates. The restaurant joins a wave of new natural wine bars in Milan, which serve a large variety of small dishes to fill you up from aperitivo hour to midnight. Osteria Alla Concorrenza is located in the heart of Via Melzo in Porta Venezia, a hotbed of new restaurants and bars where customers spill out onto the sidewalks on weekends. Vibe check: Customers lean trendy and hipster." - Elizabeth De Filippo-Jones

Great ambience. Owner and staff were super nice and accommodating. Nice varied menu of small dishes and wines. The crostini with stracciatella and pesto rosa was awesome. So was the mortadella focaccia. A must in Milan.

The ambience is nice. The owner and staff are friendly and helpful with recommendations. I had red wine which the owner recommended, it tasted really good and natural. They have a whole collection of wine. It’s frequented by the locals. I ordered eggplant Parmesan that tasted good as well. I would recommend them.

We had an amazing evening there when visiting Milan. Tucked away from the tourists, great ambience, good selection of wines and delicious food. Menu is small, but each dish was tasty and we had plenty to share. Very friendly and helpful staff.

The vibe of the place is very cool, as it looks a traditional osteria but it is a modern version of it. The service is nice, specially if you are a returning customer. Food wise I was not a big fan… we ordered a lot of items, and in my opinion, all of them were very “fat” and a lot of string flavours together… I prefer when is a light flavour with a powerful one so you can taste the nuances and one don’t overpower the other. Also, the way it works is kind of tapas, so it is small portions to share. It could be interesting for an “aperitivo” or if you want to drink wine (they have a very interesting list) and order some food just to have something with the wine…

An very good wine list with large choice of natural Wine. The food is very authentic. I would describe it more as a wine bar with a food offer rather than a restaurant.

Really nice experience in this small and traditional restaurant. The staff was helpful to chose what we wanted. We shared several plates and sandwiches and everything was tasty.

An alternative take on Osteria! Had a lot of fun, and potentially one of the best places quality vs price. Was pleasantly surprised of the crostoni and wine selection was great. The tagliere was also fantastic! Staff was also great - not super consistent (different style of service from different people) but nonetheless it did not take away from the experience. Would love to go back and try the rest of the plates.

Definitely good with friends to share the dishes. Really enjoyed the trippa and the staff were great with pairing some nice wines with your food. Great natural wine selection.
