Best Restaurants in San Antonio | Eater Austin

"Co-owners Paul Sartory and Peggy Howe transformed part of their Alta Vista home into a takeout restaurant and intimate prix fixe dinner spot. The small menu changes weekly but frequently includes an entree drawn from various European cuisines and a hearty vegetarian main. Ordering to-go will make a harried night less of a slog; eating in the rustic-chic garden will make it enchanting." - Brandon Watson

The 16 Hottest New Restaurants in San Antonio

"One of San Antonio’s few live-work restaurants, Outlaw Kitchen is the offspring of chef Paul Sartory, a former Culinary Institute of America instructor, and wife Peggy Howe. She rehabbed the former hair salon into a working kitchen, and they open five nights a week for dinner service with only two menu items on the board, which use vegetables from their sprawling gardens. Favorites include a Greek pastitsio, paella, and just about any vegetarian dish." - Jessica Elizarraras

Google
Food was absolutely amazing. We went the appetizer was shrimp scampi, entrees were steak Diane or 100 layer lasagne and desert was Basque cheesecake or chocolate torte. The only thing that could have been improved would have been a creamier Basque cheesecake and more mascerated strawberries with the cheesecake. Everything else was perfect and amazing.

Google
We had an early Saturday reservation.Gumbo was great. The lasagna was darn good even though I am more partial to traditional lasagna. The barbeque was very tasty but was delivered cold. At proper serving temp I think this would be phenomenal. The drink parings were a mixed bag the two aperitifs were crazy good. The wine with the main course were a disappointment. Skip the pairings and order your wine from the menu.

Google
Exceptional. New favorite. You've gotta try the desserts, and the egg coffee cocktail at the end. It's so delicious! Their menu changes weekly so get excited and make a plan to go. Reservations recommended but not required.

This was the perfect spot to have a date night with your lover! The ambiance, food, & service was 5 stars! Natalie took care of us this evening & she made the experience even better. This place is one of my new favs!😊

Google
Among the best restaurants in San Antonio. The menu rotates weekly, so we wait until there are two entrees we both would like. Indoor and outdoor seating options, a kitchen garden, and a pair of turkeys make it a unique dining experience.

Google
Outlaw Kitchens has outstanding customer service and amazing food! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit a great experience. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. I highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for a delicious meal and top-notch hospitality

Google
Very small, quaint, restaurant with seasonally changing menu that produces excellent food. I loved being able to support this business. They are not open many days of the week so getting a reservation can be tricky but it is worth it. Highly recommend this restaurant for a date night or a place to take friends from out of town

Another great supper at Outlaw Kitchen. Tonight was Chicken Fried Steak night so, of course, we had to come! Ohhhh...that gravy. Dayum! #1 Wifey had the Pappardelle Bolognese which was great as well! Hand cut noodles and they have a slightly different spin on their bolognese (lentils). Good stuff. We finished with a dessert of profiteroles filled with lemon cream and fresh blueberries. Perfect end. This place never disappoints!

Yelp
Enjoying a fine meal at Outlaw Kitchens is like a treasure hunt: the menu changes often, but has limited choices, so you want to check ahead and go on a day when they are offering something you like. Also, the best possible experience is dining on the patio in good weather, but this is Texas so the weather is variable. The patio has a misting system to cool things down, and the patio faces east so it's shady in the evening. Ordering the prix fixe menu gets you an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. They offer a vegetarian entree, too. You can choose a set of alcoholic drink pairings or just get soda or water. The food has a farm-to-table feel: fresh ingredients, well prepared, with just enough sauces, seasonings, etc. The staff treat you like you are a neighbor stopping by. The restaurant is located in a historic residential neighborhood, and many of the clients are locals. It's casual with a bit of an old money feel. There are always families, and the patio is kid friendly.

Yelp
We made reservations to visit after trying to walk in last week and finding out they had already filled their last spot. It was worth the wait! We were seated in a cozy little cubby near the back, which was perfect. The staff shared the story of the owners--a husband, a graduate of the CIA culinary school, and his wife, who has a background in construction. Together, they created a warm and inviting restaurant where they used to live before expanding due to their success. We couldn't decide on a red wine, so our waitress graciously let us sample a few before we settled on a lovely French dry red. Our meal started with a fantastic pork and grape appetizer, which was the highlight for us. For the mains, we chose a vegetable and a fish dish. The eggplant was a bit too rich for my taste, and I would have preferred a lighter, crunchier panko coating. The redfish had a bit of a strong flavor, but the corn succotash that accompanied it was excellent. The fresh, crisp salad was another standout. We were too full to enjoy dessert at the restaurant, so we took a nectarine tartlet and chocolate cake home. Both were a hit the next day! For everything we enjoyed, the bill was very reasonable, and the service was exceptional. We'll definitely be back to try more from their weekly-changing prix fixe menu.

Yelp
The food is good, but it's not extraordinary for the prices they charge. The service is great, and so is the ambiance. The inside seating area is VERY limited, so expect to sit outside. You might be able to snag seating inside if you make reservations a couple of weeks ahead of time, but be prepared to be in a loud and crowded environment if you sit inside. They have a nice outside patio with fans and misters, so it's kinda comfortable - even in August. They're good, but not that good. Save this place for restaurant week when you can get a good deal. Reservations are definitely recommended - even if you want to sit outside. They really are that busy.

Yelp
The restaurant is beautifully designed and the staff was excellent. My daughter enjoyed watching their pet turkey in the yard while waiting for our table. The food was delicious but for the price I expected it to be more elaborate. At this price point, I enjoy eating at places that make dishes that I can't make at home easily and food that challenges my taste buds. Outlaw didn't provide that but it was a great experience and we all left full and happy.

Yelp
I have been wanting to eat here for awhile and it came up on Culinaria week and the menu was what I had been wanting, the schnitzel and spaetzle. Now, it was good, it wasn't stellar, it was OK. The presentation was less than I expected. The staff were amazing; the building is lovely. The dessert. Oh my goodness. That chocolate torte with sour cream ice cream. Divine. Velvety. Sour cream tang to the ice cream perfectly matched very sweet torte.

Yelp
Wow!!! It's rare that I'm blown away by a restaurant, but this was superb. I think this meal was my favorite dining experience of the year so far. I've been meaning to try Outlaw Kitchens for a while but never got around to it. I decided to check the menu for today online and it sounded right up my alley, so we made a reservation and showed up for dinner. From the moment we walked in, the service was outstanding. We were seated right away and the menu was immediately explained to us. We wanted to try everything on the menu, so we ordered two 3-course prix fixe meals and tried each entree and dessert. The crab cake appetizer was delicious, deep fried and generously stuffed with crab meat. The two entrees were beautifully done as well. My husband ordered the cacio e pepe and I ordered the steak chimichurri. The steak was cooked perfectly and accompanied by broccoli and twice baked potato-- both great. The cacio e pepe surprised us both, though. It was bursting with flavor thanks to the tomato "meatball" and basil purée. I could eat three plates of that pasta alone. The dessert of course was amazing as well. Perfect crème brûlée and a sinfully rich chocolate torte. All in all, a wonderful and unique experience. The restaurant is owned and operated by a couple that actively work in the restaurant, and you can tell that love is put into the food and service. We can't wait to return.

Yelp
I took my husband for his birthday and we had a great time! It was a hot day and we sat inside. We shared the appetizer and the dessert. My husband had the paella with Caesar salad and I had the lasagna with green salad. The food was fabulous. We have eaten here before and we will eat here again soon. Looking forward to eating outside as soon as the weather cooperates. Everyone was so friendly. Natalie waited on us and the service was excellent. Everyone working here really seemed to enjoy working here. That really adds to the entire experience!

Yelp
This restaurant serves the best food in san Antonio Always very thoughtful in the nomenclature of the ingredients Keep up the good work Need to improve the comfort seating outside (coushins) Additional led table lighting would definitely improve the mood setting

Yelp
I wanted to take my wife out on a romantic date night. When I want to impress, I peruse the Yelp app. Today, I found Outlaw Kitchens. The photos were attractive. The outside dining looked beautiful. To get to the restaurant, we had to travel through a very seedy neighborhood. Outlaw Kitchens seems to be on the outskirts of an area that some are attempting gentrification but needs a few years to make it. They only do a prexfixe (no menu, just one appetizer, two mains, and two deserts). The app was shrimp and crab ravioli. There were four (not so big) ravioli on each plate. My wife liked them, but I thought they were too fishy. My wife and I both decided on the quail. Two quail were nestled on a bed of risotto. The quail was outstanding! The texture, the flavor.. yes. The risotto had good flavor, but it was CRUNCHY! For desert, my wife decided on the apple walnut cobbler. I ordered the chocolate almond torte. We shared these. I preferred the torte. My wife liked both equally. We also had cocktails. My wife had the lillet blanc rose, and I had the contratto. My wife didn't care much for hers. My drink tasted like flavored mineral water until I got about halfway down. After that, it tasted much better. In the end, we got the check. Had the bill been around sixty dollars, we would have been ok with that. The bill ended up being almost 200.00! My favorite restaurant warrants that caliber of bill, not this one.

Yelp
This place has been on my list for a while now, so when our friend chose to have her birthday dinner here, we were excited. Then, when we saw what was on the menu for the evening - cream of mushroom soup and lamb - we were ecstatic. Since we arrived a bit early, we were seated at the outside bar, which was nicely lit and inviting. Unfortunately, they do not serve liquor, but my friends enjoyed their wine cocktails. I had their IPA, which was good. We did not wait long before being seated at our table in the very back of the restaurant, next to the bar and kitchen. This inside is quaint and charming with a family feel, which was nice. Everyone was friendly, and service was good, but standard, not next level. Onto the food...complimentary bread is not offered. The soup was good with 3 different types of mushrooms, but the criminis were my partner's and my favorite. Finally, onto the main course, the rack of lamb, which sadly, did not impress. We love lamb and have had it at several top-tier restaurants, but this was not it. It was luke warm at best and had a sauce on top, no mint jelly. The carrots and spinach were good, and the potatoes were delicious. Our friends had the pasta, which they all equally enjoyed. We chose the coconut cream pie, which my friend and son raved about. I wish I had tried it. Overall, the place and ambiance were a 4, the service 3.5, and the food a 3, so I rounded up to 4 versus down to 3 because I root for places like this and would try them again.

Yelp
I used to live 2 blocks away from this little gem, but it took me moving across town to finally come in and wow, we really missed out. What a special place. From the garden, to the atmosphere all the way down to the service and the food. Everything was spectacular. The turkeys strolling around were the cherry on top. Natalie was fantastic with drink and dessert recommendations. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
The staff at Outlaw Kitchen is truly awesome! The food they serve is absolutely amazing, and the ambiance is great too! Making reservations online was a breeze. When I arrived, I was promptly seated inside. I couldn't help but notice that even at 7:30pm, the outside area was packed with a lively crowd of happy people. What stood out to me was that instead of having one specific server, the staff worked together as a team. Whoever happened to pass by would clear plates, bring drinks, and check in on me to see how I was doing. I decided to try the carnivorous menu selection (although there is a vegetarian option available). For starters, I had the crispy lump crab cake with a delicious caper-dill mayo. It was served with a sweet Lillet sparkler, which complemented the flavors perfectly. As my main course, I had the charcoal grilled lamb sirloin. It was cooked to perfection and incredibly tender. The lamb was marinated with garlic and rosemary, giving it a mouthwatering taste. The dish was accompanied by gratin dauphinoise potatoes, sautéed spinach, and a red wine jus. The basil crusted tomato was also expertly prepared, neither mushy nor burnt. To pair with my meal, I was served Ascheri barbera, an Italian red wine with hints of blackberry, plum, jam, and spices. Although personally, im a dry Cabernet kinda gal, the wine went well with the lamb. For dessert, I indulged in the peach blueberry cobbler with bourbon crème sauce. It was so good that I almost called my grandma to let her know she had met her match in the dessert department! Alongside the cobbler, I was served an in-house made egg cream liqueur. It had a similar taste to eggnog but was not as thick or overly sweet. It was absolutely delicious! I would definitely go back to OK without hesitation. https://www.outlawkitchens.com

Yelp
Everything was very good. I tried to count the layers on the lasagna but couldn't. Very hot outside but the icy cold water kept coming. Attentive help.

Yelp
Everything was great here! From ambience to food and service! I ordered lillet blanc for drinks and eggplant ravioli for supper. The entrees came out very soon. The drink was refreshing and the eggplant stuffed with goat cheese was divine! It came with a side of salad. We finished it off with strawberry shortcake, which was pretty good. Overall, highly recommend this place. Do check it out!

Yelp
This restaurant or should I say this culinary art experience is one for the books. You will not be disappointed or I shall say we were not disappointed. When you come to the restaurant you are welcomed by a hostess and they will check for your reservations. There is inside and outside seating and if you choose to Sit outside there are misters, shading and fan ! The food like eating art. We had a wonderful hostess Natalie she was like our own personal food tour guide. The menu changes weekly. We are sure to come again.

Michelle S.

Yelp
First, you must make reservations. This is a small cozy restaurant literally functioning out of a bungalow, in the heart of a neighborhood. Our dermatologist recommended it and it was really good and fresh. It's a quaint atmosphere where seating is mostly outside and some inside but very limited. They are usually full to capacity because word gets around about this place. The menu is limited to what is on it for that week since they are only open a few days of the week. You can always call and ask what is on the menu for that week before you make reservations or just do it. You will not be disappointed. We will definitely be going back.

Yelp
We celebrated our 4 year anniversary and the food that night was beyond delicious and looked fantastic!!! We loved the atmosphere and the staff were very welcoming and friendly! Loved every moment we were there!!

Joaquin S.

Yelp
Read some decent reviews and thought the changing menu was interesting so I gave Outlaw Kitchens a shot and made a same day reservation. We were sat up close to a window near the entrance and had constant traffic walking by our table. We ordered the two available entrees; a gnocchi plate and steak plate. For 40 bucks each, I was definitely expecting something better than I could cook at home. Both the meals looked and tasted very average. Maybe we caught them on a bad day but for a $100 tab for 2 mediocre meals and people constantly grazing our elbows, I left pretty unsatisfied.
google avatar

Jackie E.

Yelp
Omg so good! Loved every piece of the appetizer all the way to the dessert! Best lasagna I've literally ever had. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Outlaw Kitchen has a different menu each weekend. There is always a meat option and a vegetarian option. You can order a la carte or a Prix fixe menu that includes an appetizer, entrée, and a dessert. On the menu this week was Chicken Supreme with autumn vegetables and risotto. It was delicious! The ambiance is cozy inside and a vibrant outdoor patio. We sat inside in a cozy booth facing the kitchen. Portions were perfectly sized and each dish came out quickly. The service was friendly and the waitress was knowledgeable about each menu item. The ingredients were incredibly fresh and seasonal. Overall we enjoyed a delightful meal.

Louis L.

Yelp
Restaurant week menu. Great customer service, we had multiple people serving food and asking how everything was. The food was delicious, homemade Burrata, lamb chops with polenta, and charred veg. Dessert was lemon tart and a chocolate cake with sour cream ice cream. The menu changes on Tuesdays, I can't wait to what they come up with next. Wow. Thanks.
google avatar

Duy N.

Yelp
Wow. We were very impressed with the service, and dishes with quality ingredients and thought. We sat at the bar which I highly recommend. You get a view of the kitchen along with seeing Chef Paul Sartory running the show like a boss. Charcuterie was playful and fun. The white grape jelly was amazing, we want more. Both salmon and ravioli dishes were superb. I really enjoyed the flaky pastry included with the salmon dish. Dessert was awesome. Simple fudgey chocolate cake with ice cream and apple pie. Gotta note that there was no down time between courses and the server along with Peggy Sartory asked frequently how things were and kept up with the drinks. Will definitely be back!

Helen T.

Yelp
The menu changes weekly but the food is always good. Especially enjoy their various pasta dishes, in which the pasta itself is always home made at the restaurant. Can also recommend the chocolate torte with ice cream which is both delicious and gluten free. Service is always fast.

Jerry L.

Yelp
A great place in my neighborhood ! Service is superb and food and menus are outstanding! Fanz says "Two thumbs up ! "

Yelp
EXCEPTIONAL. This place was awesome. If I had one word to describe it I would definitely have to say exceptional. We came here because we saw it was top 100 on Yelp in Texas and my wife and I have been going to the 7 places who made the list in San Antonio. This was the 6th one we've made it to thus far and it was terrific. Out of the 6, it probably had the best tasting food. And I really mean that. The ingredients were so so fresh and tasty and it was cooked to perfection. The appetizer, entree and dessert were all excellent. This is a home that was converted into a restaurant and the ambiance was beautiful. It's run by a retired chef and his wife and they are wonderful and are doing a terrific job. It's only open 3 days a week and for dinner only. Each week there's a new menu. They typically make it based on the season. I highly recommend this place. The food is delicious it really tastes like a nice home made meal. The staff is also very nice and did a great job explaining the menu to us and everything. Please check it out!! Overall: 4.85 stars

Mary Grace S.

Yelp
Outlaw Kitchens is always fresh and delivering something new! I've been about 5 times over the last 2 years and they always hit it out of the park! With a small menu that changes weekly, you can eat there frequently and always try something new. Love the intimate feel and friendly service. Their patio is so fun to sit outside when the weather is nice!
google avatar

Lamar S.

Yelp
Always great food, but it's a little pricey, considering the lack of choices offered.

Chay P.

Yelp
They have a different menu each week, and only 2 options, vegetarian and non vegetarian. Whatever it is, it's amazing. One of the best values you can get in the city hands down. It's a small place, so make a reservation as soon as you see what's posted for that week. They food is not frilly or over the top, just really well make every time.
google avatar

Yelp
I had seen the recently published list of top 100 restaurants in Texas by Yelp and was curious about Outlaw Kitchens. Thankfully, when I called yesterday, they had a table for 2 outdoors for us. The home converted into the restaurant was charmingly done and the patio area was very welcoming. As we sat trying to decide what to eat and drink, I felt that the patio area was designed with the customers' comfort in mind - ceiling fans and misting sprays. There was not one fly at the table and the mist was definitely cooling. It felt like we were neighbors invited to come and have a meal. I had the Contratto Cocktail while my husband had the Lillet Sparkler. Outlaw Kitchens is open only Thursdays through Saturdays for dinner. The menu changes weekly and is published on their website. We chose the prix fixe but you can also order a la carte. We both had the Charcuterie and the Parsley Crusted Seared Corvina with gulf shrimp chowder which was perfectly cooked. I could only eat about half of my corvina which my husband happily at the rest. For dessert, my husband had the Lemon Pound Cake with blueberry coulis and sour cream ice cream and I had the Flourless Chocolate Cake with sour cream ice cream. I personally love baking and truly enjoy great desserts. Looking forward to seeing the upcoming menus to see what can tickle my palate. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Had the special of seafood stew with saffron, not a very big portion, but luckily I wasn't very hungry. I think they shooting for a more refined Cioppino, but while good with fresh seafood, the dish pales in comparison to a good Italian restaurant's Cioppino or a good fish houses seafood stew. Great service and care of customers, it was obvious there was a steady stream of regulars coming in that they have established a good customer base. Their patio is large with misters, good selection of wines but no beer on tap. I will return, everyone else seemed to be enjoying their meals so I'll try something else.
google avatar

Cristina T.

Yelp
We ate there last weekend for our anniversary and it did not disappoint! They have a new menu weekly and you have an option of the prix fixe or a la carte. They also have a beverage pairing option for each course. We started with the scallop mousseline nantua and we each got one of the dinner options, pork schnitzel and gnocchi piemontaise, then finished with the chocolate almond torte. Everything was flavorful and delicious. The service was excellent. We reserved a table on the patio and it was perfect! We will definitely be returning and look forward to seeing their weekly menus.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Wow! The food and menu selection is definitely worth the money. I've been dying to come back!
google avatar

Doc S.

Yelp
We have considered Outlaw Kitchens one of SA's finest. Tonight was my wife's birthday, so we ordered two of the 3 course meals to go. Expensive, but we anticipated a great meal. The duck was tough as a boot! Duck is challenging to cook, but if you have a new cook, they shouldn't be cooking duck. The sour cream ice cream just tastes wrong. We were very disappointed. We will probably try them again with hopes they get better.
google avatar

Kaleigh M.

Yelp
Amazing! The food, service, and atmosphere were perfect. There is a fixed menu, but everything was so delicious and went well together! If you want to sit inside, make a reservation.

Sally S.

Yelp
Always delicious. I've dined in a few times (reservation needed) and ordered pick up often. Tonight was shrimp & scallop bisque (wonderful), 100 layer lasagne (so fresh and BIG) with continuity farms lettuces in preserved lemon vinaigrette, and chocolate almond torte with sour cream ice cream. $49

Annie S.

Yelp
Love this place! Cozy ambience (somehow sitting outside is pleasant here, even in summer) - always delicious food with attentive waitstaff.

Melissa A.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have ever had in my life. Tonight it was crab and shrimp ravioli, pork schnitzel, and chocolate almond torte with sour cream ice cream and goat cheese cheesecake. Everything was absolutely perfect.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Top notch cuisine presented in a cozy and unique old house. The menu changes every week, and features seasonal and creative dishes. Fun to watch the turkeys gambol around the yard - be sure to check out their beautiful vegetable garden out back. Service is pro and attentive, but a little bit rushed. Love this place.
google avatar

Juan M.

Yelp
Place has a very comfortable vibe. The staff is very helpful. Food was great but the portions are small for the price. For two with only one glass of wine and tip, it was $140! Problem was we were still hungry.

Greg F.

Yelp
Great service and food...would visit again especially since its menu is created weekly m!
google avatar

Tootie M.

Yelp
I'll start off that I'm a foodie and a wino. The food was good. We did all 3 courses and we weren't disappointed with any of them. We had considered bringing a nice bottle of wine. I'm glad my husband decided against it. They serve the wine in the water glasses. I would have been super bummed paying a $30 corkage fee to have my wine served in a water glass. It really does effect the taste of the wine. If you are a wino I would recommend bringing your own glasses.

Anna F.

Yelp
Just don't ask for a straw. I have a situation that I need one luckily I had one in my car. Almost everything is spicy, so be aware.
google avatar

Kim F.

Yelp
Reminds me of a kids saying...."you get what you get and you don't throw a fit," and why would you when the offerings are so delicious. The night we dined the choices were a fish stew or gnocchi. We both went with the gnocchi and it was amazing. We also got a choice of dessert and tried both, each preferring our own choice. I also got the alcohol pairings, which were spot on. We took home a flask of their delicious homemade lavender cream liquor. There is very limited seating inside, which on a very unusually cold night we were grateful to have. Some diners were braving the wind and the cold outside with heaters to help....it's that good! Don't miss out on this hidden gem!
google avatar

Anjoli F.

Yelp
So pleasantly surprised to see this as e were driving by! LOVE LOVE LOVE what they're doing, the setting, menu, gardens, all of it! We sat at the bar and shared a risotto and had two drinks while enjoying the weather and turkeys. MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE than anticipated, but I get it. The risotto wasn't really creamy and almost too al dente? But I was obsessed with "portobello bacon bits". Will def return when I wanna splurge.
google avatar

Edi W.

Yelp
Food is excellent, service is solid and ambiance is delightful. Love the changing menu and the way they pair food and wine. Each week is a new food adventure--highly recommend!

Yelp
It was a great experience. Food was spectacular. Wonderful service. This is a quant setting. Loved it. Call ahead for reservations and check the menu.

Yelp
A very unique eatery . Wonderful ambiance . We had one of the best meals we've had here . Everything was exceptional . The drinks did not disappoint either .

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places for date night. They are only open select days of the week so I would definitely check before going. I have never come here without making a reservation because there is limited seating and it is quite popular. You can easily make a reservation online on their website. Each week features a new prix fixe meal with one meat and one veggie option. You can order things a la carte, but I have always enjoyed doing the prix fixe. The food is fresh and many of their veggies are grown in their garden behind the restaurant. I have never been disappointed with the quality of food and service here. There is lovely outdoor seating as well if your group is larger. It is run by a lovely couple whose husband taught/teaches at the CIA. This is a lovely spot for locals and would recommend for any out of towners as well.

Yelp
Super cuisine with ever changing menu and fresh ingredients. Local go to restaurant. You can bring your own wine which is nice.
