"Settled into its new permanent Frelard beer garden space, this is Onur Gulbay’s Texas-style barbecue with Turkish-style sides, where the sumac-topped potato salad is a refreshing treat in the summer sun, the corn casserole is an ideal not-too-sweet carby backbone to a pound of prime brisket or pulled pork, and spicy pickled vegetables add heat and a needed textural counterpoint to the soft give of the bread and meat; even the bread pudding is an inventive riff, an ice-cream-scoop-looking orb of Nilla Wafers and cream in a to-go brown tray. "Outsider in Fremont serves a lineup of smoked meats so masterfully conjured up that it’s possible to momentarily forget that BBQ sauce even exists. (But sure, twist our arm with a drizzle of peppery golden mustard sauce.) Mounds of pulled pork are moist. Links of jalapeño cheddar sausage have impeccable snap encasing molten pockets of cheese. And sides, like sumac-sprinkled potato salad and fluffy corn casserole, offset the grease nicely. "What makes Outsider distinct from the other barbecue joints around town is its Turkish-influenced sides, but don’t let that fool you: This is classic, Texas-style barbecue. The standout is the fatty, buttery soft brisket, but the smoky sausage is a treat as well. The cheesy corn casserole is the side to get, and like every barbecue joint worth its sauce you get white bread and fresh, crunchy pickles with every order.
