The Best Restaurants in Spokane, Washingston | Eater Seattle

"Chef Ian Wingate, a staple of Spokane dining, served as executive chef at the Davenport Hotels the head chef at the iconic Wandering Table; he also owned the restaurants Moxie, Blue Fish, and Agave. His newest adventure, Outsider, is an edible slideshow of popular dishes from his past, like brick oven–roasted feta and the fan-favorite chipotle barbecue Moxie meatloaf. There’s also a few genuinely new dishes, like a whole roasted rotisserie chicken and a cacio e peppe pizza." - Kris Kilduff

Absolutely LOVE this restaurant. Long over due review. Last year we came here every Sunday for a month. Food is next level. Fresh, delicious and the creativity is amazing. This time we ordered the Beets & Burrata and roasted carrots for appetizers. The carrots are so tender. We got the Moxie Meatloaf and Carla’s Cast iron bone in pork chop. Delicious! Pickle F**ker is our go to pizza, we usually get one to go and we had to since dinner was soo good. Service is always superb. Our usual server Amber (who is the sweetest) was not there but Suzanne took great care of us. Looking for a unique place this is the spot.

Great place near the park and sports venues. Has a variety to offer, lamb pasta, pizza, sandwiches, etc. Cocktails looked amazing, a little pricey at $14-16. Woodfired pizza was tasty, with fresh and natural ingredients. The vibe was nice, a good spot for a lunch or dinner date.

This is how pizza should be. Pizza dough like this doesn’t just happen. A lot of attention to detail in the food here. Will make a point of coming back if ever I’m back in Spokane.

Google
Very intimate and well thought out spot just north of downtown spokane. Menu is creative and fairly priced. We had steak tartar and baked feta for apps. The baked feta was very one of my favorites of the whole experience. We had four kinds of pizza and whatever they put in that white sauce, I’d drink it. Will definitely be back!

Beautiful atmosphere and super good food! Friendly staff, clean and prices are reasonable. We are here for the weekend from Seattle and are picky when it comes to food! This place was so wonderful! We recommend the pepperoni pizza, the pickle pizza, The Burger and The Meatloaf! The drinks were super yummy too! We will be back when we are in town again!

Such a great hidden gem downtown! If you love pizza, Salads, and a few meat options crafted by a local chef, go to Outsider! This place is a quaint spot with an open kitchen concept. We sat at the bar and loved watching the chefs make the dishes. My only "complaint" is that there was only one gal serving, hosting, and making drinks. The place wasn't "packed" but it was definitely steady. They should hire at least one other person to do hosting/drinks! We had to wait a bit to order so I can definitely understand the poor reviews about leaving without ordering. However, the food itself made up for it! The Prosciutto and Arugula toast was divine. The Spinach salad was incredible! Such fresh flavors. And the cacio e pepe pizza was toasted to perfection, yet soft and crunchy! My husband and I frequent NYC Italian pizzerias and this place is comparable. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a local spot before a show or just during your stroll downtown. We will be back!

Wish I’d known about this place sooner - like WAY sooner. Shared an absolutely delicious lunch with my grandson here today. The beet and tangerine salad is a perfection of flavor combination. Chef, we’ll be back!

Yelp
Service: The service here was great. I actually went two nights in a row and both times we were greeted with a smile and they were so kind! It just felt friendly! Atmosphere: This is a neat little space! The building is an old brick building, so it has a little bit of a rustic or vintage feel. They also have fresh plants around the restaurant, including fresh basil (which I LOVE!). The kitchen is also right in the middle of the restaurant, so you can see the cooking, the pizza oven, everything! It's really neat. My daughter loved it! Food: My daughter got a pepperoni pizza and loved it. I tried a piece and it was really tasty! My husband got the Moxie meatloaf and said it was the best meatloaf he had ever gotten from a restaurant (my homemade meatloaf remains his favorite ‍). The meatloaf is a mixture of ground, chuck, brisket, and pork. It's served with a demi glaze on top of mashed potatoes. It was scrumptious. I started with the French Onion soup. It was HOT HOT HOT (temperature), but once it cooled off enough to eat some it was SO SO yummy. My husband and I both loved it. I then got the burger which was also a mixture of ground, brisket, and chuck. It sounded delicious, but if fell flat for me. The burger patty itself wasn't made well and kind of fell apart in pieces when I tried to eat it. On top of that it didn't have much flavor - it really just tasted like plain ground beef. Kind of like, raw ground beef flavor when all you taste is meat. It wasn't great and I didn't eat it. I did like the fresh salad it came with though! We would love to go back. The cocktails were good, the service was great, and most of our meal was also delicious! Worth the trip!

Yelp
Hands down the best food in Spokane! Farm to table feel. Quality, fresh ingredients and the most fantastic entrees. Great cocktail and wine selection. Service was amazing. Super enthusiastic and knowledgeable server who answered all of our questions. Small restaurant but upscale feel for a quiet and quaint space. Highly recommend the meatloaf and rotisserie chicken. The pizza looked fantastic but we didn't have room to order all the entrees.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to dine before a Chief's Hockey game and Outsider was right across the street! Located on the first floor of the Papillon Building on Howard Street, the restaurant is smallish so consider a reservation. We gave ourselves plenty of time two explore the menu and cocktails and were delighted with the service and dinner. We enjoyed a house Ceasar salad and French onion soup. Both were delicious. We both had the steak dinner and it was likewise wonderful. Every aspect of our visit was satisfying and we will be back!!

Yelp
This is the coolest place. All fresh ingredients, cute ambiance, wonderful food. The pizzas are amazing and so are the salads. Can't go wrong here!

Yelp
Disappointing. Upon walking into the restaurant there was no sense of an identity. What kind of restaurant is this? The menu also lacks an identity. Pizza place? Hamburger place? Pizza and burgers were tasteless. We had a wonderful waitress. Prices on the web were significantly lower. Not a good beginning to our evening.

Yelp
Tonight's meeting for the Eat Meet club was at @outsiderpnw . Located in the Papillon building east of the Spokane Arena. The owners have created a vibrant yet cozy environment with the exposed wood oven. We had a very friendly server who was welcoming and accommodating. HIGHLY recommend the French Onion Soup... drooling as I type this. It is a smaller space so I would recommend a reservation. Overall a good experience, service was a tad slow but very friendly. . . French Onion Soup- jammed onions, calvados, cream sherry, bone broth Jarlsberg, country French bread Prosciutto pizza- San Marzano tomato, prosciutto, asiago, fresh basil, dressed arugula, country olives. Moxie Meatloaf- ground chuck, brisket, pork, garlic, parmesan, chipotle bbq sauce, mashed potatoes, demi glacé. The Paul- San Marzano tomato, mozzarella, pastrami, coppa, guanciale, pepperoni, goat horn peppers

Yelp
My friend Kevin chose Outsider by the Arena for dinner last night. He told me the former owner of Moxie named Ian opened Outsider a while ago. We started with a poke made of rib eye steak with a yummy poke sauce. We then moved to a tasty sausage pizza. Nice vibe and Jess our waitress was very friendly and responsive. Very nice place to go for a good meal in a great atmosphere in downtown Spokane.

Yelp
These folks are great! Was here for NCAA and my daughters volleyball next door. Have to come to this spot if your in town! Chef and staff are super friendly, pizza is great. Good beers on tap. Great spot to have a beeer before or after a game and get some great food. Thank you guys!

Julie Z.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I enjoyed sitting up at the counter, watching the chef cook. I would highly recommend the French onion soup.

Yelp
Wow!!!! Sitting here right now enjoying Valentines dinner. The food and ambiance is amazing. Definitely recommend this amazing gem. The service was great!!! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
We had Valentine's dinner at Outsiders and were able to experience their 6 course set menu with wine pairings. Everything was incredibly delicious, fresh, and flavorful with combinations that we had never tried before. What a fun meal to eat too, every bite was exciting! Plating was beautiful, service was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. From the lighting, to the music, to the table scape and decor, we were continually impressed with our experience as the night went on. If you need a new place in Spokane to try, please go here!

Yelp
My first time at The Outsider and it won't be my last!! The moment you enter the bright contemporary space you are greeted and welcomed in!! The open kitchen lets you see Chef Ian work his culinary magic!! I ordered the popular Pork Cubano sandwich with field greens salad and housemade pickles!! Absolutely astounding!! The pork so tender like butter and the pickles with just the right amount of tang!! I broke down and ordered dessert, chocolate layer cake that was not too sweet but just right, frosting was light and fluffy, cake was moist and light!! I will be back to try other delicious selections soon!!

Blair W.

Yelp
I usually don't write Yelp reviews because I don't want to be bias but my experience was so disappointing I felt a duty to. My husband and I were super excited to try this spot specifically for the pickle pizza. When we arrived we were asked if we had a reservation, It wasn't busy at all in fact there were only two tables of people there. The gal made us feel like we needed a reservation but awkwardly led us to a table. We sat there for 20 minutes and no one came by to offer us water, drinks etc. The restaurant was not busy at all and the waitress was no where to be found. The table next to us had to go up to the guys in the kitchen to ask for water. Prices were expensive and we lost hope of getting served to unfortunately we walked out. Very disappointing!

Yelp
Phenomenal food and probably the best pizza we've ever had! Service was great as well with excellent recommendations plus it's super cute and cozy inside.

Yelp
Tried this trendy little restaurant near the arena and Spokane Civic Theatre last night. It's an easy walk, just across the street. It's a small restaurant, so if you are planning to eat here before a concert or other big event, be sure to get reservation. We lucked out at managed to get a large table (party of 5) which we ended up sharing with another couple. The staff asked politely, and knowing they were full, we agreed. Most of us had the meat loaf, which was tasty. The chipotle bbq sauce was a little spicy and I scraped off some of it just to bring down the heat factor. It was very tasty, and we agreed it was the best item of the evening. We enjoyed the meal, and might go back when it's not so busy and not with a group. My only note is their handling of the group check. They wouldn't do separate checks, and we had to figure our own total and tell the waiter how much to charge on each card. A total hassle for the customer when running separate checks is only a little more work for the waiter. Might want to revisit this policy.

Yelp
Came here for Restaurant Week, did not disappoint! Our server, Natalie I think was her name, was exceptional. The food fantastic! Can't wait to come back and try the pizza.

James L.

Yelp
We were a group of four with a 5:30 reservation ahead of a 7:30 concert across the street. We were on time for the reservation and were seated immediately. So far so good! We noticed there was one large group already there (maybe eight people?) but on either side of us there were groups of four. The restaurant is pretty small, so even though it was full, there weren't a lot of people. The tables next to us were already eating their meals so we peaked to see show things looked. But after about 15 minutes passed, we still hadn't even had our drink orders taken. We also noticed we had been given lunch menus, so we flagged down a server to ask about the menus and to get our drink orders in. The server came back and said we could order from the lunch menu, but we said we just wanted to make sure we were getting to see everything available and she said yes, it's basically the same menu. We received our drinks half an hour after being seated. The Basil Bee was great, all the things I like, Gin, honey, lemon, basil - very nice. My husband had a ginger beer, and our friends had a nice glass of Chardonnay and a good old fashioned. We ordered our meals, but found out two of us wanting the pastrami sandwich - which was on the lunch menu we were given - were out of luck, it was not available for dinner, so we both had to change quickly as our two hours was melting away. We still had an hour and a half before the concert across the street, but then after another thirty minutes went by, we just received our appetizer which was a small pizza with garlic and maybe a balsamic drizzle, our friend ordered it so I'm not sure exactly what was on it, but it was good and we wolfed it down. We waited another 30 minutes plus before our entrees arrived. We had thirty minutes to eat, pay, and run across the street. The beet and tangerine salad was fresh and delicious - what a great medley of flavors! The French Onion Soup was such a mess, it became a novelty trying to eat it at all. What I managed to get to was delicious, but it was too complicated with the little time we had left. My husband got the meatloaf and loved it, I snuck one bite and was jealous - he cleaned his plate! One of our friends had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup which they did make sure was still available off the lunch menu. Our other friend got a pepperoni pizza (quick decision since no pastrami) and the crust was quite charred and had puffed up enough that all the toppings went to the middle and he really just ate the middle instead of the big ring of charred crust. This could be a really good place, but the service was so slow even for a simple group of four with a reservation two hours before our concert. If they can't turn over the tables a bit faster, I don't see how they will make enough money. I won't go back as a pre-event destination which is a shame because they are located to serve that kind of crowd. The servers we had were super nice and polite, unfortunately the entire experience was just too slow and we were late to the show.

Louis K.

Yelp
Chef Ian Wingate of Moxie and Table 13 fame is firing on all cylinders at his restaurant across the street from the Arena. The food is well done and presented with some of his Hawaiian influence in some of the dishes. The drinks are well blended by Natalie! Ambiance is upbeat with great music. Great service. Highly recommend.

Dan S.

Yelp
My wife and I closed out our week long trip in Spokane at Outsider. We'd spent the week eating at all the hot and top rated eats around town. We had Outsider in our sights but ended up going last in our trip for various reasons. Needless to say, we should have come here every night. The staff was absolutely amazing, we spent time talking with everyone. The food was wildly next level and truly mind-blowing. The chefs make everything in house and to order, down to the salad dressing. The attention to detail is unreal, and we couldn't have dreamt up a better experience. Outsider was easily the best eat, and will forever be our first and last visit next time we're in town!

Yelp
I was super excited to try this new restaurant but was very disappointed. We made reservations for 5:30pm, placed our food order by 5:45.. and waiting 1 hour and 15 minutes for our meals! We ordered pizzas and burgers.. and the meals were brought out at all different times. The staff was very nice.. but also seemed disorganized and frantic. Never once did they mention the long wait time... Needless to say we will not be back.

Yelp
Amazing food and drinks! Steak was perfect. We will definitely be back. It was nice to get some solid food in Spokane!

C B.

Yelp
Burgers are fantastic the vibe is gas. Ask for Amber she's very kind. Location easy access to downtown but easy to park too

Patti W.

Yelp
We had an amazing experience at The Outsider prior to our Cher experience. The staff was very friendly and engaging. The drinks were fantastic and the food DELECIOUS!! We will definitely be back as there were so many things we wanted to try!

Roynane L.

Yelp
Outsider has become one of our favorite places in Spokane. Ian's Rotisserie Chicken is outstanding as are his pizzas. The Caesar Salad is probably the best I've ever eaten and, his Famous Meatloaf is famous for good reason. Parking can be a real challenge but it's worth the struggle to eat here!
google avatar

Karen F.

Yelp
We decided to come to the Outsider for Restaurant Week because we'd never been here before. (The whole purpose of Restaurant Week, right?) I had the salad, fabulous & Ralph had the French onion soup, also fabulous. We each had Ian Wingate's famous meatloaf, and we now know why it's famous. One of the best we've ever had. For dessert, Ralph had the Jaffa cake & I had the crème brûlée, the perfect finale to the perfect meal. Natalie was our server & she was great; anticipating all our needs. (Ian, you have a gem there.) We recommend Outsider during Restaurant Week or any other week.
google avatar

Ian M.

Yelp
Hands down best meal and best service I've had in town. The ribeye poke is the best dish in the PNW!!
google avatar

Naomi B.

Yelp
I had family visiting from out of town and after a walk around riverfront Park we decided to stop in. We were able to sit at the bar and the service was fast and friendly. We had questions about the cocktails and the answers were very helpful. We had a melted cheese appetizer and it was phenomenal and to top it off the bartender had just won several awards in a bloody Mary competition earlier that day. I will definitely be back to try more food and an award winning bloody mary!
google avatar

Veronica R.

Yelp
Just go, promise you won't regret it! Food was amazing, ask for The Paul! El Jefe was the best drink! Hi Natalie and Cadence!

George D.

Yelp
Great service and amazing food. Sit at the bar and watch chef Ian work his magic in the kitchen. That alone is worth the visit. You must try Outsider if you haven't already.

Kate C.

Yelp
Some of the best food in Spokane right now. Their pizza dough is legit - fermented for 3 days until it is tangy perfection.

Cinda R.

Yelp
Always an excellent meal. Innovative and delicious. Best French onion soup ever! Great service and great vibe!

Logan L.

Yelp
Bad service, waiter was really disrespectful to our group. Portions were very small for the expensive price.

Max Z.

Yelp
Server was extremely racist. Stared at us when we walked in the store and gave us weird looks. When served a burger, she dropped a tomato on the floor and blamed it on a little kid. Cursed in front of all the kids and slammed the rest of the plates in front of us. Kept blaming it on us again and again. Showed no sign of genuine apology and still blamed it on us.

Brian W.

Yelp
Honestly the best chicken Caesar salad I have ever had! We also had a ciabatta sandwich that had multiple types of Italian meats it was excellent!! Perfect! The atmosphere was gorgeous.

Philip C.

Yelp
When we walked into the restaurant all the staff were staring at us for at least one minute before saying anything. the manager was extremely racist towards one if the children and started blaming him for "spilling" food when it was the server who spilt the food and then it came all over the floor. When we asked to check the camera since she kept blaming on the kid, instead of actually checking. Do not ever come to this restaurant. Food is expensive, unfulfilling, and does not taste good.
