Ox Bar & Hearth Ignites Lincoln Park with Midwestern Cooking Over Live Fire | Eater Chicago

"Live-fire cooking and Midwestern sensibilities define this new Lincoln Park restaurant, set in a 125-year-old space that once housed the Golden Ox, with a custom wood-burning grill and oven as its literal centerpiece. About half the menu meets the flames, showcasing simply cooked dishes like smoked whitefish dip with radishes and seeded rye crackers, potato pierogi from chef John Asbaty’s grandfather’s recipe, and a pork collar with rutabaga mostarda and black walnut–cider jus. Sourcing anchors it in the region—produce from Illinois-based Frillman Farms and Northern Michigan’s Werp Farms, Great Lakes fish, and local meats—while the drinks list mirrors that ethos with a private barrel bourbon from Wisconsin’s J. Henry & Sons, beers from nearby Off Color Brewing, seasonal cocktails such as an apple-and-sage highball, and a domestically focused wine list spanning Michigan to California. Exposed brick, warm tones, and soft lighting frame an open kitchen in a space that seats roughly 118, with a lounge and bar area offering first come, first served seating, a private room, and a patio for warmer months. Named to honor the building’s heritage (“Ox”), foster community (“Bar”), and celebrate the hearth at its core (“Hearth”), it aims to be a cozy gathering place that changes with the season—“when it’s winter, we want the food to feel like it’s winter”—and opens in mid-November." - Jeffy Mai

Chicago’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings, Fall 2025 | Eater Chicago

"In Lincoln Park, chef John Asbaty and restaurateur Alain Uy reunite for a neighborhood spot built around wood-fired Midwestern cooking, reimagining comforting regional flavors with seasonal ingredients and pairing them to a beverage list that highlights Midwestern spirits, beers, and wines. The design nods to the building’s past as the Golden Ox, adding lounge seating, intimate booths and banquettes, and a private dining room styled after a kitchen library." - Jeffy Mai

Ox Bar & Hearth to open in Lincoln Park | Eater Chicago

"Taking over the longtime restaurant space at 1578 N. Clybourn (across from the North & Clybourn Red Line stop), this new concept aims to create a communal environment that honors the location’s history as the Golden Ox (1921–2001) while pursuing a fresh vision. Led by John Asbaty and Alain Uy, alums of Trio in Evanston, the team plans a summer opening and is currently hiring. Expect live-fire cooking with Midwestern roots and an emphasis on simple, straightforward techniques that are intentionally not boring. The spot most recently housed Burger Bar Chicago, and the new name is inspired by London pub traditions that pair animals with symbols of comfort, craft, or place." - Ashok Selvam

Special unique food and a unique place with all the bells and whistles (private dining room like a chefs table that feels like home), valet parking, drinks are creative and tasty, they honor dry January and the non alcoholic drinks were great. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and in the cold they have that double door to keep the outside cold from getting in. Really enjoyed the experience. I wasn’t a fan of the custard cake … whipped topping tasted fake, not much custard in the cake bc when I saw custard cake I thought lots of cream inside, but the cherries were great! The fries were amazing crispy and sauce was great too. I wasn’t a fan of the cabbage w trout roe…the fishy smell of the roe over took the cabbage flavor and it was not appetizing plus too much aioli tasted heavy and fatty. We will return and the staff and our waitress was amazing … attentive and sweet and knowledgeable.

We were so exited to come here! The atmosphere is very inviting and cozy. The service was really great, everyone was very attentive but not overbearing. We ordered pierogi, chicken, rib eye and carrots. Everything was sourced locally and fresh, and you could tell. Flavor was sensational on everything. Only downside was we were too full for desert! We will definitely be back!

I was absolutely blown away from start to finish. The moment you step inside, you are wrapped in a warm, inviting ambiance that feels both comforting and welcoming, a space where you instinctively want to settle in, linger, and lose track of time in good conversation. I loved their take on familiar classics, each dish prepared with care and a fresh perspective. As a die-hard “meat and potatoes” Midwesterner, I was surprised by how impressive the vegetable dishes were. They stood just as strong as the meat-focused plates and were every bit as satisfying. But the pièce de résistance for me was undeniably the pierogi. Ox Bar & Hearth has transformed a humble, beloved home-cooked staple, one many of us grew up with, into something extraordinary. It is comfort and craftsmanship, nostalgia and nuance, all delivered on a single, perfect plate. Dine here and be delighted!

Must try beautiful new restaurant in Lincoln Park. The atmosphere is cozy and effortlessly elegant. The food is nothing short of exceptional. The hearty, flavor packed vegetable dishes were standout- especially the carrots, cabbage steak and mushrooms. Pair them with your choice of protein- my favorites were the strip steak and the pork collar. Save room for dessert. The warm cookies with milk jam were decadent while the pavlova hit the spot on a light note. The staff is warm, personable and professional. I will be returning soon to try the famous whitefish dip that was sold out.

What a dining experience! We've been waiting for them to open ever since we saw the sign in the window and our first visit did not disappoint. The interior is beautifully done, and everyone was so welcoming. Our server Ryan was incredible with the service that he gave us from start to finish. The lamb sausage appetizer began the night and we immediately knew the attention to detail they put into the menu was going to show. The steak and trout were incredible, and we ended the night with the chocolate chip cookies. We are so excited to see a great restaurant like this in the neighborhood. Can't wait for our next visit!

What a great food start to 2026! Loved this spot, nod to the old Golden Ox. Everything is hearth inspired! Loved the charred cabbage and pierogies. The whole trout with fried garlic was excellent. The cocktails were smashing! Service is impeccable.

Wow they hit it out of the park with this one! New spot in Lincoln Park, and it already feels like a staple in the area. The food is INCREDIBLE, and the service is stellar. Candice was a star, guiding us through the menu and having a refreshing but attentive style about her care the whole night. The ambiance is so unique, and the open hearth concept? Brings you right in to the experience. Feels quintissentially Midwestern, home the way the heart wants it to be. We had a little bit of everything on the menu in our group, and nothing disappointed. My personal favorites were the Lamb Merguez Sausage, the burger (omg one of the best I've had in the city!!), the steak, and the pork collar. The desserts were all great, but the apple fritter knocked it out of the park!! Definitely will come back again! Definitely try this place. Explore the menu, have a drink at the bar, watch the magic in the kitchen, and enjoy one of the better new dinner experiences ======== UPDATE=============== LOVED this spot so much that I had to come back, and talk about consistency!! I came with a different group this time, starting at the bar while waiting for our crew to arrive. Brittany at the bar was so nice and a great conversationalist, previewing a spot we were going to be at later, and mixing up cocktails that really are a strength of OBH. Brittany was so incredibly helpful amd even recommended a wine that is a new favorite ! Switching over to the dining area after everyone arrived, we were treated by, again, incredible service, this time with McKenzie. Recommendations were spot on, banter was easy flowing, and we felt incredibly well taken care of. The desserts hit it out of the park again. I have to say sometimes a restaurant does things so well, and when you go back it's not as great. Exact opposite here with OBH, and I can't wait to come back yet again and again!

First time here and I know we'll be back over and over to experience the home-cooking seasonal flavors that the chefs bring. Our favorite was the pierogi's, pork collar, white fish dip - and the fries were surprisingly a hit for our family! We usually don't love thick cut fries but these are so Crispy on the outside and perfect in the inside. :) We also absolutely loved our waiter, Luke and AGM Cherish was a delight. Everyone makes you feel at home here, and we loved how much of the food hit the hearth and had that smoky fire touched flavor. 5 stars.
