Portland’s Best Seafood Restaurants and Food Carts | Eater Portland

"Every restaurant and cart on this map is in the fish business, but it’d be hard to find one more in love with the fruits of the sea than Portland Fish Market. From the photos of prize crab catches covering the walls to the glass cases full of house-smoked delicacies, basically every inch of the Woodstock storefront is devoted to fish and fish accessories. The fish and chips aren’t an afterthought either: the menu features a good selection of fresh catches fried to golden perfection, alongside wonderfully salty fries. There’s indoor seating available, but the fish window is a beloved institution in the neighborhood, and even on overcast days, one will often find the outdoor tables filled to capacity." - Ben Coleman

The Best Fish and Chips in Portland, Oregon and the Surrounding Suburbs | Eater Portland

"This Southeast Portland seafood market is a neighborhood haunt for its fish-and-chips window, which offers an array of super-fresh, golden fried seafood. Portland Fish Market has some of the best selection around, with everything from ling cod to petrale sole to salmon — purists, don’t freak out, the shop sells cod and halibut, as well. Order online for pickup." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Woodstock Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"When it comes to fish and chips, fish markets often hit the top of the power rankings, considering their access to fresh seafood. That freshness comes with varying availability and prices as seasons come and go, but Portland Fish Market typically offers a wide variety of “and chips” options; the menu includes Pacific Northwestern staples like salmon, as well as relative rarities like fried oysters. Those looking for a beverage pairing can opt for bottles of Topo Chico, canned beer, or wine. Fish and chips are served from a window on the side of the building, with online ordering available." - Nathan Williams

13 Hidden Spots to Eat and Drink in Portland | Eater Portland

"Deep in the belly of SE Portland, you’ll find one of Portland’s best fish markets, where you can pick up wild-caught fish, shellfish, and house-smoked seafood. This four-year-old, family-run fish shop is a neighborhood gem, in large part due to the fish and chips window hidden around back, with fried-to-order baskets of freshly caught cod, halibut, shrimp and more. The best deal? The two-piece cod lunch special for $7.99, daily until 2:30 p.m." - Kara Stokes

Google
What a great place! Don’t know why I get my fish from Whole Foods when I could get the same fish here, only cheaper, fresher and with great service. I’ll be back!

Bryan Paul

Google
Frozen salmon and tuna were tasteless. Looked fine, smelled fine, texture was fine, tasted like nothing. I've never quite had an experience like that in 5 years of making sushi.

Hugo Aguas

Google
My partner and I came in to peruse without intending to buy anything, but the kind gentleman behind the counter sold us on the scallops. Not only were they fresh, but they were also delightful. You can find caviar, trout, frozen fish, and other edible aquatic varieties. I'll be returning when I'm in the area.

Google
Fantastic seafood and good prices! We got a couple pounds of mussels, a ribeye and a half dozen oysters. They were all delicious! The mussels weren’t fishy at all. We made the best meal.

Milo

Google
Best retail shop in Portland for cooked Dungeness crab, most restaurants that offer it in town source from them. Similar quality to the Pacific Seafood locations on the coast, which is to say very fresh. They can also do special orders for stuff like sea urchin. Only thing that's missing is a counter raw bar with a few stools, bottles & taps.

Google
Purchased some fresh shelled oysters and sashimi-grade frozen salmon. Prices were reasonable and the two staff members working the counter were patient, friendly, and kind.

Carl Buchanan

Google
Wonderful staff, extremely friendly, the best place for fresh seafood

Anna Hopkins

Google
Always fresh and they have great prices. This is my one-stop shop for seafood.

Yelp
Man what a deal I got on salmon and steelhead there! And he boxed it all up neatly with ice, so I was able to get it home in fresh condition hours later. I also noticed he had a good selection of scallops at least average market price or lower. I'll be coming back to stock up when I throw seafood brunch parties.

Yelp
Get ready to feel good by stopping by this fine seafood deli. Pacific Seafood is one of the largest seafood distributors in the Pacific Northwest and perhaps the world. They supply your favorite fresh seafood to local restaurants and grocery stores. For such a large seafood distributor, this is their humble retail location where they have been on SE Powell Blvd since the early 40's. Their fresh selection of seafood comes from as far north as Alaska and as far southeast as the Gulf of Mexico. The selection changes based on what is available fresh based on the season. Don't see what you're looking for? They can order it for you! In addition, there is a large selection of frozen seafood. Some of it is self-service in a deli freezer, or you can ask for it and they may have it in the back. Service is as good as it gets. They're experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly. If you like, they can box your seafood and pack it in ice. This is above and beyond. My personal favorite are their fresh steelhead fillets. It's from their own sustainably raised steelhead farm on the Columbia River about 5 hours from Portland. Light, flavorful, and flaky. I could eat it everyday, and sometimes I do. They are open Monday through Friday, so plan accordingly for your weekend seafood meals!

Yelp
This is absolutely the best fish market I have ever encountered. They always have a good selection and the fish is always very fresh. The people who work there are friendly and helpful, the prices are reasonable and the fish is excellent.

Yelp
We purchased a whole crab at Pacific Seafood on Friday and decided to eat it the next day. The nice people at the shop had cleaned the crab and packed it in ice for us. We went to eat the crab and discovered that the center section was all black and the crabmeat was gone. Well, upon cracking the tiny crab legs and pulling out the meat we found it to be in pieces and stringy. This crab had previously been frozen and then thawed out. Freezing a crab destroys the crab and makes it inedible. I had known that regular supermarkets sell previously frozen crabs but did not know that a seafood outlet like Pacific would stoop so low.

Yelp
Always a selection of local in season catches at reasonable prices. Very friendly staff. I love supporting this longtime local owned independent business.

B W.

Yelp
Although the seafood we purchased seemed decently fresh, we found an inch-sized piece of plastic that was pulled out while chewing crab. Any freshness of food does not account for allowing a large amount of plastic to be missed and included in human consumption. Its totally and utterly wrong. It means the food was not inspected properly and questions the practice of this establishment's quality control. I greatly hope the owner sees this as an opportunity to change their lack of attention to a customer's well-being.

Yelp
For Thanksgiving this year I planned to make a dish with whole founder. Problem is, while flounder is a staple on the East Coast, it's not popular here and nobody had it. Except Pacific Seafood. "No flounder, but our buyer says there's some big petrale sole that's running around 3lbs each. Will those do?" Indeed they would, and did. If you're looking for something specific, do remember to call in advance; if it's being caught anywhere in the world, PacificSeafood can probably get it for you with a few days notice (PS is owned by possibly the biggest international fish company in the world). The staff is helpful and friendly and can suggest alternatives if something is just not going to be available. Do keep in mind that they primarily sell wholesale to the restaurant trade, so you generally get whole fish, crab, shrimp etc. and it's up to you to clean and filet them. PS is also the only place I know in Portland that regularly stocks deboned butterflied trout, useful for a number of recipes.

Yelp
If you want the freshest seafood possible ( other than dropping your own line and hook or crab pot) this is the only place to go! They never fail to make me happy!
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Freshest seafood in Portland. Because it comes from our coastal waters. Staff is eager to sell sole, cod, salmon, oysters, crab, halibut, lobster tails, etc.. A little spendy sometimes, but isn't fresh worth it? No Wi-Fi (that I could tell) Open on weekdays only till 6:00 pm Public parking lot. Good for kids because they like looking at dead fish.

Yelp
That lucky Capt Hook! He's the scourge of the bike lanes again & the holy terror of mud puddles everywhere. So why does this bad boy get sweet, tender dungeness crab risotto with crimini mushrooms & asparagus tips for V-day? Because it's still dungeness crab season & for $5.99/lb there's no need to schlep to Costco, get run over by 5 SUV's, 3 shopping carts, & the random stroller or two to get 2 crabs for the same price when I only need one. Did I mention that the lovely lady behind the counter will not only clean the crab for you (She removes the back with one quick snap AND pulls out the scary monsterish appendage-shaped lungs so you don't have to do it later while thoughts of, "OMG. Did that just move??" go running through your pretty little head.) but also gives out cooking tips. (Octopus is cooked when it bobs up from the water, or oil if you're so inclined, just like gnocchi!). That lucky Capt Hook, maybe it pays to be bad after all....

Yelp
I'm mixed on Pacific Seafood. I have friends who ocean fish to support their families. Some have lost their life fishing. Pacific has been a very rough bargainer with fishers. Pacific Seafood is no doubt supporting families of employees. Eating fish customers are all in supporting their own same family values. For the fisher view, an independent news source is http://fnonlinenews.blogspot.com/. If you can buy direct from a fisher, recommend it. For salmon, if you have a chance to buy from a native fisher, that is ideal. Salmon are literally part of the spiritual fabric of many Northwest tribes. And of course you can catch fish yourself! Pacific is next best. They understand sustainability better than most and can tell you where the fish are sourced. If you are near one of their coast cleaning factories the fresh packed shrimp is sublime. Small Oregon pink coldwater shrimp are in season April-October each year and are fished sustainably. If you are buying "local sustainable" seafood at a store, question. Who caught when. Where. Does the fish go by other names. Likely you are getting fish from Pacific. This particular store is small. It has a selection of the most common local fish and shellfish, fresh and frozen. The Pacific Foods website, with a bigger selection, is maintained by the warehouse in Clackamas. The warehouse is focused on filling wholesale and restaurant orders, there is no retail there. But if you see something on the Pacific Foods website, phone ahead a day in advance to the Powell store to see if they can special order it for you.

Yelp
Every seafood item is TOP quality. The people working there are SUPER PROFESSIONAL and NICE. Buying from this establishment is always a joy. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I love this little hole in the wall joint! Its very reasonably priced, has a great variety and is usually being operated by weathered old fisherman types. Its the first place I think to go when I want a decadent meal at home.

Yelp
I've been using Pacific for 25 years, I rely on them to provide the majority of my local seafood. Their service and quality has served me very well through the years. I highly recommend them.

Yelp
Excellent service and quality seafood is available. Fresh and frozen. Great selection and reasonable prices.

Yelp
Oh hell yes. I am so excited to have found Pacific Seafood. When your loved one has frequent hankerings for seafood of all varieties, and you both find the oyster cravings are coming faster than you can earn the dough to buy them, Pacific has got your back. I love this place for so many reasons: -great friendly service. They are matter of fact, helpful, quick and funny. I always rush over right after work to grab a dozen oysters before they close at 6, and they always serve it up with speed. -prices are off the hook. Most oyster varieties are 6.95 for the dozen, and they will order whatever variety you want if you call ahead. Lobster tails are almost too cheap NOT to buy, and tuna steaks are crazy affordable. -great selection. They have pretty much any variety of shelfish and seafood you can think of, and you can order with short lead time anything else you want including live crawfish. If you even remotely enjoy seafood, promise me you'll make a trip by here. If you don't see what you want, I'm willing to bet that crack team of seafoodistas will hook you up.

Yelp
I hate driving on Powell or in this part of town in general, but I go here to get seafood from this market. It is well priced and always fresh. The people that work here are wonderful. They are SO helpful and willing to do just about anything to help you and your new seafood purchase make it home. They always offer ice and last year, they completely packed up an order of Oysters for us (box and everything) for no extra charge so we could get them to Idaho for Christmas at my in laws house. It's rare to find service like this anywhere in Portland, so I wish I could give them an extra 6th star just for their customer service!

Yelp
The most awesome place in town to get fresh oysters. They also have fresh whole tuna in the month of August you gotta love it it's much cheaper to buy it there. Its an extra dollar a pound more than it is to get a Newport. So save the drive go to Pacific seafood it's the best place in town.

Belinda G.

Yelp
AMAZING Red King Crab legs. Such a difference. I bought Golden King Crab legs at Whole Foods at $27 per pound, pretty skinny, not alot of meat. Pacific Seafood had Red King Crab at $23 per pound and another local market had Red King Crab at $39 per pound, way out of my price range! Pacific Seafood Red King Crab was so delicious and sweet! It's the ONLY place I'll go in the future! Thank you for my delicious dinner!!

barbara c.

Yelp
Love!!!! The freshest seafood, great prices, great selection and great people. We make it a point to stop here once a week.

Rob G.

Yelp
Never impressed with the selection. Raced over there after work today before they closed. Would you like the smoked salmon or the smoked salmon? Waste of thirty minutes driving.
google avatar

Brenna S.

Yelp
You can always tell fresh seafood by the smell. If it smells slightly fishy, like being at the ocean, you know it's probably safe. But if it stinks to the point you gag when you walk in, you know something is probably wrong. Luckily, Pacific Seafood Company is the first of these two scenarios. Although a little deceiving from the outside, this little shop sized business with counter service harbors some of the freshest seafood to come out of the Northwest Pacific. With always-friendly service and consistently reasonable prices, Pacific Seafood Company is also one of the main seafood vendors to local eateries, including most of Portland's upscale, 5-star restaurants.
google avatar

Terry W.

Yelp
Looks are deceiving, indeed. Tucked away on skanky Powell Blvd, Pacific Fish and Oyster storefront and interior looks and smells like a complete throwback. More than slightly fishy with your standard bins of assorted seafood. Difference is, everything is absolutely fresh with a good variety of fish and shellfish. I usually opt for their incredible cuts of Copper River salmon in season and OYSTERS........ 8 visits and never a letdown. Between ABC Seafood and this place, my eastside wants are taken care of, both business run by down to earth friendly folks.

Yelp
When I move to to a new city the first thing I look for is an honest butcher, and a great fishmonger. For the latter, anyone who enjoys cooking with fresh delicious ingredients should look no further than Pacific Fish & Oyster. The shop provides the kind of welcoming "Old Neighborhood" atmosphere which has always included patient, knowledgeable staff who are happy to see you and happy to help.
google avatar

Yelp
Stumbled across Pacific in early January - very happy to have found it. Prices are reasonable and the staff was helpful and knowledgeable. Wish they were open on the weekends! Will be back for salmon ends and poke very very soon :)

Yelp
I love this place, I just wish they were open on the weekends. Very friendly and the quality is outstanding.

Yelp
Bad place not polite staff and very unlike this place and not recommendation this place to anyone. I am not come back in this place again.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
I have consistently shopped here for 20+ years. I have never been disappointed with my order. The service is polite and helpful. The fish is fresh. Nothing else to say. The owner still uses a pencil and paper. That is always a good sign for me!
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
Fresh fish! Outstanding quality, knowledgeable people, great service... just freakin fantastic place to get your grub on.

So now i will take my hard own money and buisness some were els.

Taylor D.

Yelp
Far and away best/freshest seafood in Portland. We've shopped all the others, and Pacific Seafood has the best: ling cod, crab, mussels, dover sole, petrale sole, tru cod. Great and knowledgeable service too.

Didier S.

Yelp
I bought a live dungeness crab today. The employee didn't show me the crab before weighting it, I trusted the establishment so kept quiet. One claw and one leg missing pitifull crab at the end. So disappointed, will never go back. There are 2 more sea food places on Powell, Pacific seafood should take care of their customers better.

Laura D.

Yelp
We have ordered fresh crab annually for many years and always get top notch service...friendly and helpful. We love the 5 lb fresh frylegs, what a delicacy! You will enjoy these wonderful people and their excellent products.
