"Let’s say you’ve had a series of doomed internet dates that have gone from bad to worse. But just as you’re about to give up hope, out of the midst of this shitshow emerges someone who looks too good to be true. You arrange to meet for a drink and surprisingly, they’re warm, funny, and you get on like two recovering alcoholics in an Oddbins. But in the middle of the conversation, there’s a disconnect, like their mind’s somewhere else. Maybe they left the stove on, you think, or perhaps they’re staring at the bartender’s arse. You part ways, and you think about how you had a good time, even if it wasn’t the perfect date. Palatino is an Italian restaurant that’s good, even if it isn’t perfect. The restaurant specialises in Roman cuisine, which is to say that tomatoes and basil are out, and cream and cheese are very much in. The food’s mostly very enjoyable and occasionally superb - you’ll want to order another plate of the pasta cacio e pepe after inhaling the first one, and you’ll also bicker with your dining companion over who gets the last deep-fried sage leaf. The waiters are super-friendly and make you feel like you could be at the trattoria down the road from you, but without the week-old lasagna and tardy service. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Like an imperfect date though, the experience doesn’t come without a significant flaw. The realisation will slowly come over you that it isn’t anything to do with the food or the kitchen, but rather that sitting in that expensively designed dining room feels like you’re having dinner in the annex of one of the nondescript offices strewn around the neighbourhood. Because that’s literally what you’re doing. There’s a stage by the bar where presumably the previous occupants gave team talks, and a trip to the loos will highlight that they’re shared with the office next door. As you start to recognise these details, you’ll feel less at ease with the vibe here. On each of our trips here, that’s been our experience - we’ve been excited to be here at first, and slightly less so by the time we leave. It isn’t to say that a restaurant like Palatino isn’t great for certain occasions. The pastas and those cracking little starters are excellent and worth a short trip for. And as far as functional neighbourhood restaurants go, it’s hard to think of anything more suited to an area as trendy as Clerkenwell. If this were an actual date, perhaps you wouldn’t necessarily picture a wedding a few years down the line. But you definitely would keep in touch for the occasional hang, because who says no to pasta? Food Rundown Fried Sage Leaves If you haven’t tried these before, then rest assured that this is a good place to do it. They’re battered and deep fried until crispy, and basically taste like incredibly light, crunchy crisps. Anchovy, Stracciatella, Toast Another good starter. Stracciatella is a creamy, light cheese a little like mozzarella that goes great on top of toast. The anchovy and slices of fresh lemon take this to the next level. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Fried Courgette Flowers & Honey Vinegar These aren’t the finest examples we’ve tried, but at four quid for a plate of decent ones, no one’s going to blame you for ordering these if you just really want them. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Mozzarella, Peas and Shoots Totally fine, and good if you have a vegetarian on your table. Otherwise, you can give it a miss. Tonarelli Cacio e Pepe Basically tonarelli (a kind of Roman spaghetti) tossed with butter and pecorino cheese, dusted with cracked black pepper. Lovely and satisfying - if you’re coming here for anything, this is it. Nettle Agnolotti, Ricotta Don’t be put off that there are nettles in the pasta itself - this dish is roughly 99% dairy, as the little pasta parcels are bathed in butter and cheese. Probably not very good for you, but they’re pretty damn tasty. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Bombolotti Ragu ‘Marcella’ Essentially a creamy little pasta dish that reminds us a little of a carbonara. Incredibly hearty and a good shout if you forgot to eat lunch and showed up starving. Saltimbocca Basically, veal wrapped in pancetta and cooked with Marsala. It’s a well-made dish, if not particularly exciting. Tiramisu You’ll regret not getting this if you get the honeycomb chocolate thing you’ve seen on Instagram. While it’s not much to look at, it’s simple and satisfying and will end the meal on a high note." - David Paw

Good food but funny venue. Feels a bit soulless and probably better for a business lunch rather than a casual or romantic dinner. Cod starter is delicious. Main pasta is good but was served very al dente. Not your usual Italian in terms of options but food is very good. Venue let's it down and probably wouldn't return because of this reason.

The complementary bread was nice but a little cold. Radicchio & pear salad: the portion was a little bit too big for me and I would prefer smaller pieces of radicchio. Maybe individual wrapped radicchio with pear slices would be very nice. However, the overall taste is very balanced, fresh and nice. Bream, onions, pine nuts, raisins & vinegar: The combination is very lovely and tasty. However, there's lack of presentation and it was slightly oily and the bream still has a little bit of fishy taste. In addition, the skin of the fish was on the upside which I would prefer it at the bottom to allow the source to soak into the fish and in case for the non-fish-skin-eaters for easy removal. A small bone was found which wasn't a problem for me but I guess for non-bone eaters this could be annoying. Chocolate cake, pistachio & honeycomb: This is the star of the meal. The chocolate cake/thick mousse has a very strong bitter cocoa character which contrast really well with the rich cream and crunchy sweet honeycomb. Together with pistachio, the overall taste is in harmony. Overall, the staffs were very friendly and attentive. The price of the meal is under £35 which is a very good value in London for this kind of environment and services. The decoration and atmosphere is very lively but not noisy. The seat is comfortable considering I'm pregnant and has a bump in front of me. The only little thing which annoys me is the cutlery makes a squeaky noise with the plates and not very sharp and not compatible with each other. However, this is a new restaurant and I can see it to be improved overtime. I would definitely go back to try their pasta dishes.

If there’s one thing you order, make sure it’s the roasted potatoes. Lightly smashed, crispy, with delicious herbs, you won’t be disappointed. I was here for restaurant week and they had an amazing vegan option of roasted squash with lentils and chard which was so delicious. The artichoke started was also lovely. Decor and ambiance is really nice and as the restaurant is quite big you don’t feel cramped or rushed. Would def go back!

Went here on a Saturday when they had Unlimited Pasta for £25. The portions were just normal dinner size so if you do this as well don't underestimate it haha. The food was great though and the staff super friendly. We only managed to eat 3 portions each.

Randomly dropped in cycling back to work after hot yoga at fierce grace. Very happy with the quality of the cooking and attention to detail. Had the rapido menu and at 1230 on Saturday the place was deserted so no problem with service.

After experiencing Roman cuisine first hand in Rome last year I was very excited to find this little gem. I stumbled across Palatino after working at a coffee shop nearby. The staff were warm and welcoming but the hero of my night was Pedro, behind the bar. He was attentive, genuine and knowledgeable. His recommendations were brilliant! I was offered the warm courgette bread and water while I perused the menu. I had the nettle and ricotta pasta as well as the rigatoni veal pajata (which is milking calf intestine), both were amazing! The menu is extensive but the more adventurous a diner you are the better your experience will be. Food was mid range in terms of price and the wines can get quite pricey at £15 for a glass but you can get cheaper ones. All the wine is from Italy. This is now my favourite restaurant in London and I'll be jumping at the opportunity to go back.

Gorgeous homemade pasta, perfectly cooked onglet and saltimbocca, dreamy polenta, original cocktails, an interesting and varied wine list and the stracciatella on toast, wow. It's a big open space with communal benches and booths, so great for groups as well as more 1 to 1 occasions. Good for meetings, a quick drink - total all-rounder. Service is great, despite it being a boxfresh opening when I went. Will DEFINITELY be back, Stevie Parle is fast becoming one of my faves.

I wanted to love Palatino. I live in the neighborhood, and was excited about the prospect of a great local restaurant to frequent, which the neighborhood desperately needs. The meal started well, the server was helpful and friendly. We started with 3 aperitivi, the best of which was the Anchovy, stracciatella, toast, absolutely delicious. The fried courgette flowers were overly fried and bready, the asparagus was ok, but not worth £10. Of the two mains, the Romana courgette pacceri was delicious, as was the Vignarola (vegetable stew), very light and fresh. We also received a wonderful wine recommendation, the Pinot Grigio, Orsogna, Abruzzo, 2014. Delightful. Unfortunately, things then took a turn for the worst. We ordered dessert, then waited at least 15 minutes until it arrived. We tried to order an after dinner cocktail when we were served the dessert, but were only then told that we had just 10 minutes left for the table! We had no idea there was a time limit, and to give us 10 minutes to scarf down dessert we were just served and pay the bill is quite pushy. We offered to move to the bar, but were told there were no free spots. After a few minutes we were told there were now spots open at the bar, but instead were moved to this weird large table "near" the bar, directly across from a half-eaten plate of pasta, empty beer bottle, and stack of dirty cups, that the staff had obviously forgotten about. The staff then proceeded to forget about us. No water, no bill, nothing. Out of sight, out of mind. We finally managed to beg the bill from a passing waiter who gave us a flustered "it's not my problem" look, and surprise, there was a service charge already included in the total. Sorry, being sat next to a stack of dirty dishes for 40 minutes does not merit a service charge and we had to ask them to remove it. They then came back with the revised bill, but still we sat there, again, next to the dirty dishes, waiting to pay it. At this point we probably should have walked out, they seemed so disinterested in collecting our money. After finally having to go to the bar to pay the bill we were free to leave (no easy task it seems). I feel this is a generous 3 stars because the first 75% was great, and I would like to return and give it another chance, but management really needs to sort the service and generally how they treat customers. Rule #1, don't serve dessert with a 10 minute countdown, we should have been given more notice and dessert should have been served in a more timely fashion, and rule #2, don't seat customers next to a stack of dirty dishes. Watching cold pasta congeal on a plate is not pleasant. Oh, and when we left the restaurant there were at least 2 empty tables, so unclear why they were in such a rush to get rid of us.

Yelp
Thumbs up to the chefs for the delicious tasting food! It's definitely great value for excellent flavours! If I still lived in London, this is definitely one of the places I'd frequent weekly. The service was great as well! We ordered two appetizers, three small portions of the pasta, and the pork chop as our main. All very excellent! The ingredients were very fresh and tasty, you can taste the sweetness from the cherry tomatoes they used in the clams spaghetti. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
Palatino ticks most of the boxes of an excellent restaurant -- a well-crafted menu of good food at reasonable prices -- but still left me slightly unconvinced. It serves up a solid advert for Roman food - a cuisine that's rather neglected on these shores. I agree with many of the reviews that observe it's a notch above most of the restaurants you'll find in the Eternal City: you're safe from formulaic menus and tourist trap chintz. Instead, the city's calling cards -- cacio e pepe, gutsy offal, more chicory than you might have thought possible -- are respectfully worked into a modern, elegant menu that really should excite you. There were a few stand out dishes on our visit. Both antipasti proved to be inspired. Anchovy and stracciatella on toast was lifted by the sour kiss of preserved lemon: the kind of blur of sea salt, zest and creaminess that life should be. Alongside it, we shared fritto misto of sage leaves, squash and zuccini. It was simultaneously a raucous fun, and yet also technically tight, dish: a mosaic of textures, perfectly fried and served with a playful dipping sauce of honeyed vinegar. Book-ending the meal, Palatino's cheesecake deserves special mention. Sweet enough to remind you instantly of childhood, it was cloud-light and shot through with vanilla. That said, a main course of onglet with polenta and chicory fell slightly flat. The meat, though gratifyingly rare, lacked the emphatic punch of flavour I'd expect from onglet. Alongside it, the salsa verde also felt listless. This was still a pleasant dish, but with a rough simplicity that strayed too close to homecooking. But more significantly, I think it was Palatino's decor and service that disappointed most. They've taken industrial chic too far, resulting in a space that seems cold and anonymous. That sense was compounded by inattentive service, with waiters seemingly uninterested in taking our order or letting us pay. Despite food that repeatedly snapped into song, this deflated the excitement of the experience. Competent, confident and well-priced: if Palatino were to take on human form, I'd certainly employ the chap, but would think twice before befriending them.

Yelp
In town on vacation. Staying at a local apartment. Decided to stop by this restaurant. My partner had the rump roast. Nice wood smoke flavor. I had the pasta with duck. Overall good experience and service.
