"Pane Pane’s teriyaki meatball bánh mì, kicked with sriracha mayo and pickled jalapeño, is one of the best sandwiches on the planet. It tastes just as great after it comes to room temperature a little bit, so this fluffy baguette of salty-sweet excellence works well as a lunch while afloat on a marine vessel. But you shouldn’t ignore their cold cut sandwiches like the phenomenal salami sub with pesto, aioli, fuschia-tinted pickled onion, and mixed greens. And yet, we always order the same thing each time: the teriyaki meatball bánh mì. The combination of fresh vs. preserved ingredients sets the bar for handheld lunches to come, and a fully-composed bite is phenomenal, down to every bit of baguette soaked in spicy mayo and sweet soy. "Pane Pane isn’t a Vietnamese restaurant, so the teriyaki meatball is the only type of bánh mì you’ll see here—and it's less of a bánh mì and more of a bánh mì-style sandwich. But it's so incredible that it almost makes us cry every time we eat it. There’s something about the combination of a soft, sweet soy sauce-glazed meatball cut with spicy sriracha mayo and crunchy daikon on house-baked bread that has so many phenomenal layers of texture and flavor. This place serves a salami and pepperoni sub with pesto mayo and greens that’s just as stupendous as their teriyaki meatball bánh mì. "University Street Station If we were to crown a “best sandwich spot” in Seattle, however, it would be Pane Pane. There are a ton of cold and hot options, the staff is very friendly, the baguettes are baked fresh every day, and we once sat in the park to write a love song about the teriyaki meatball banh mi and the salami with pesto.
