Best Restaurants in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Perhaps nothing represents the inexorable march of development in Durham than the loss of the original Parker & Otis space. Owner Jennings Brody created one of the Bull City’s most beloved eateries (cum-cafe-cum-wine shop-cum-gift shop) in Brightleaf Square and luckily was able to relocate the business to the American Tobacco Campus when a developer bought the original building. The new Parker & Otis is quite a bit smaller but still has all of the expertly hand-selected gifts, books, wines, stationary, and more. Longtime customer favorites like the grilled pimento cheese, turkey and pepper jelly sandwich, and green goddess tuna salad are still available at the deli counter, with the added bonus of now being able to dine al fresco amongst the meandering streams and lawns of American Tobacco." - Matt Lardie

Parker and Otis - Review - City Center - Durham - The Infatuation

"Parker and Otis is a counter-service lunch spot inside a kitschy gift shop that sells things like local jams, hand-painted egg cups, and the kind of drink coasters that someone definitely gifted you for your housewarming two years ago. But what you really come here for are some of our favorite sandwiches in Durham. Somehow they’re able to make options like egg salad or a BLT far better than what you’ll get anywhere else - especially since they all come with a side of some of the best coleslaw we’ve ever had. Order inside, accidentally buy $20 worth of bulk candy while you wait, then eat on the airy outdoor patio." - Christine Byrne

Google
I love Parker and Otis sandwiches! They are great as a boxed meal for work events, but their shop is cute and there are lots of outdoor seating options on the American Tobacco campus! Great spot for lunch and I like that they have espresso and coffee options!

Google
the best sandwiches in the triangle, hands down. I love no. 11 (egg salad) and no. 22 (turkey and havarti - pictured). they are absolute whoppers and always so fresh and so tasty. the staff are all very lovely and even during the lunch rush the sandwiches are quick to come out.

Google
Parker and Otis is an ever lovely place to shop for trinkets galore. Plus their food options are displayed in a most visually pleasing manner. However, I was saddened at the lack of available vegetarian options. I only ordered a measly side salad, much to my dismay. But the smiling faces of Jellycats, pasta candles, and other sweet nothings made up for it tenfold.

Google
Cute little sandwich and gift shop. Employees are friendly. The food is great, I like everything I've tried so far and there are a couple of vegetarian options. Gift shop has a variety of knick-knacks, books, and food stuffs. It's all a bit expensive, but I'm sure you could find something for anyone.

Google
Huge portions which was awesome. They do hook you up. I really didn’t like the pimento cheese though. It is way too heavy on the mayonnaise. I love pimento cheese but I don’t like when they are just like a mayonnaise soup. it may be great if you like that style of pimento cheese but I just wanted to put this out there in case someone else is picky about their pimento cheese like I am. I also got the #14 sandwich which I love all the ingredients on there but it was pretty bland. Wish the white bean paste had some flavor to it like garlic or chipotle. Coffee was great! Service was great and everything came out super fast despite having a long line!

Google
My wife and I love this place. We bring out of town guests here for the relaxed atmosphere. The food is easy going but done right. We ask for lightly toasted on toasted sandwiches as occasionally they get carried away with the toasting. Watch out for the birds they are waiting for you to turn your head and they are brave. Overall a wonderful place to eat and enjoy downtown Durham.

Google
My go-to place for sandwiches & gifts. The staff are so nice and the tuna melt is my favorite sandwich in Durham! They have amazing taste and such great books, gifts etc - and they always have jellycat stuffed animals in stock :)

Google
This is the first time I have visited Parker and Otis since they moved from the brightleaf area in Durham to the tobacco campus. I was a little disappointed because the restaurant now seems to only offer a shallow lunch menu rather than more of a variety including breakfast food. I did get a sandwich and had the roast beef on wheat/sourdough with cheese. The sandwich was good and I did enjoy it, but $12 for a sandwich could have got me much more of a meal at other restaurants. Their gift shop is well stocked. There is no indoor seating at the current time, but they seem to be working on a very small area for indoor seating. If you've ever visited the old Parker and otis, this one is definitely not what it used to be.

Yelp
Love this place! My friend and I tried the chicken salad sandwich and the white bean salad sandwich with turkey added. Both were good and super filling. The chicken salad definitely tastes a bit mustardy so if you don't like mustard maybe avoid it. The store they have inside is cute with little gifty items and it's right on the American tobacco campus so a super nice spot to eat outside.

Yelp
This place is amazing, it has a little bit of everything. In the ready-made case they have a green dip that is to die for. Put it on a bagel with some smoked salmon and it's the best thing ever. Also an amazing spot to find random gifts for housewarming, teachers, yourself!

Yelp
I have actually been looking for a sandwich shop in this area with the gas station/convenience store vibe and I was so delighted to find this place. It is everything you want a sandwich shop to look like. There is a fridge full of different drinks and sides they make fresh, walls of candies and chocolates, and a whole store of items on the other side. You can find all types of unique and international chocolates and they even had a window of baked goods that were actually plush toys. There are multiples lines to jump in and order sandwiches from. You can also build your own sandwich which I did. The staff is nice and it didn't take long for my name to be called. There is no indoor seating but there is plenty of outdoor seating and the area is very cute. I built a nice fat turkey sandwich with jam, cheese, avocado, herb dressing, and more and had it hot on sourdough bread. It was so satisfying. The corn salad was also super refreshing and yummy. I definitely love this place. You can't go wrong.

Yelp
Incredible sandwiches and friendly staff, but 4 stars rather than 5 for the unpredictable wait times My go-to is always the #26, but I have yet to try one that I do not love. There is a cute stationary/book/goodies store attached which is perfect for browsing while you wait for your order. If you go during lunch rush, plan for about a 15-25 minute wait or order online ahead of time! There is cute and ample outdoor seating to enjoy as well!

Yelp
The cutest shop ever. I love the food, especially during the holidays. I recommend watching the tower lighting, in December, and enjoying some hot cocoa from here. The service is great! I love the atmosphere, it is so cute and contains very nice items, that make great presents.

Yelp
I adore Parker & Otis. This is always one of my MUST VISITS when I come to Durham & I've been a patron for years even when they were in their old location. It's a quick counter order for really delicious & creative coffee options (and they use pebble ice!) They have a good variety of sandwiches on their menu and none of the food ever disappoints, but their pimento cheese is one of my favorites around. An added bonus is the atmosphere with the gift shop that is full of exciting options for any type of gift you need to pull together.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. Big! Expensive tho. It is located in a quirky store in a pedestrian area. There are nice benches and tables outside for sitting. Service was friendly enough. Did I mention it was expensive? We paid as much for our three sandwiches at lunch as we did for our dinner the same night. A solution which allows you to get the good sandwich at a good price... order one and split it.

Yelp
If you want a sandwich in Durham this is your place! Plus it's a HUGE sandwich! They do not skimp on the toppings! Saw all the yummy reviews on Yelp and decided I needed to try this place out while in town. I had the 25 which is the pepper jelly Turkey sandwich. I got it on sourdough and added tomato and it was delicious! Super generous size and the other half was great for breakfast the next morning. My husband enjoyed his roast beef sandwich and the cheerwine and chips were all yummy. Nice customer service and I wish I lived there bc I would be hitting up this place for sandwiches all the time!
google avatar

Yelp
The little sandwich shop/retail shop has many sandwich and coffee options. There are seating inside and out. The ambience is cute. Staff was friendly and answered my questions.

Yelp
It was my first time at the American Tobacco Campus and overall, I just love this place. Parker and Otis has such a great location within the campus and it was a beautiful day, so I sat outside. I wanted to try something different, so I got the Turkey and Pepper Jelly sandwich and it was delicious. I've never had pepper jelly on and sandwich and the "herb spread" seemed like a dip smeared on but it complimented the pepper jelly well. The salted honey pistachio latte was phenomenal. If I come back to Durham again soon, I would absolutely bring friends back here! On top of having a great deli and cafe, the store items were great. You could come here and find gifts for anyone of any age and they had very unique options to choose from. What a cool little place!

Yelp
Solid sandwich spot in downtown Durham with a very cool book/gift area. I got the No. 17 with salami, mortadella and provolone and it did NOT disappoint. Worth the $$!
google avatar

Yelp
If you enjoy sandwiches, Parker & Otis is for you. Parker & Otis is a bit hard to find if you don't park in the nearest parking garage, but it's well-located. And if you want to sit outside, they are connected to a covered area with a number of picnic tables. I enjoyed the tacos, but they were small! So keep that in mind as you order!
google avatar

Yelp
super cute mix between bookstore, knick knacks and cafe. Cafe offerings mostly salad and sandwiches. The sandwiches are creative ... I had to get No 28 - peanut butter, bacon, banana and honey on a toasted sourdough. Delicious! The store itself is bright and colorful, well light, eye catching displays and variety of goods. Would love to visit again when I'm back in town

Yelp
Cute place in the American Tobacco Historic site. After walking around I wanted to sit down and eat but not outside but indoor where AC is plenty. After I passed the highly rated Boricua Soul because they don't have have indoor seating I walked across the way. At first I thought it was just a knit knack store but to my surprise it has also a little food section. I was so happy since I want to cool down and I am hungry. I ordered a simple BLT and they were very generous with the bacon! I also got a side Greek salad and a can of local brew and I was good to go!

Olivia R.

Yelp
the sandwiches are so gass omfg. Service: amazing. Ambiance: amazing. My only complaint is that they are not open on Sundays but like that isn't even a valid complaint because everyone deserves days off. I just happen to crave their sandwiches a lot on sundays idk why. Probably bc they are soooooo gas.
google avatar

Yelp
Great location and friendly service. The food was very good. I had a blt and a coke. About $14. No sides included. The sandwich was very good but that price is a bit high for what you get. I guess the location is the main factor. The store attached had some interesting and eclectic offerings. You order at the counter, wait for your name to be called then take your food outside or back to your office. It is very convenient. My office is in the tobacco warehouse building so it's one of the places to grab lunch that's close.
google avatar

Ashley N.

Yelp
Very cute cafe in a bookstore! I recommend stopping in. They mostly have sandwiches and lunch items and typical cafe drinks. You can shop around as you wait for your order to be ready and you can find a lot of cute things.

Yelp
I have always loved Parker & Otis, but sadly haven't been in years. We had the opportunity to check it out at it's new location. Happy to say- I still LOVE it. Every part of the place is inviting! We all ordered sandwiches for lunch. I ordered the #26 the turkey and stonewall kitchen mango chutney. It was so so good. And I was happy that I was given extra napkins because the sandwich was full of goodness. I also ordered an Americano and it was perfect. After we ate our lunches outside we came back to look around the cute shop. I couldn't help buying a few toffees as a treat for the ride home. I hope I get to come back soon!

Yelp
I love this quirky little place! The outdoor setting is the most perfect for lunch. The pimento cheese sandwich is the best I've had.

Martin S.

Yelp
Best shrimp BLT I have ever had! Been getting them for years and they haven't changed! Just plain awesome!

Yelp
Have only ever catered but I loved my chicken salad sandwich. Very fresh and satisfying. I would love to go back!

Yelp
It's hard to compare their new location in the American Tobacco Campus to their old location in Bright Leaf since the new location is smaller and their focus seems to be retail as opposed to dine-in food. On our recent visit my wife ordered the white bean spread, avocado and cucumber sandwich and enjoyed it. I'm sure they will expand their menu offerings and get comfortable over time. In the meantime, they have a wide selection of cookbooks, greeting cards, wines and gifts to peruse.

Yelp
Parker & Otis is the best takeout near my apartment. The sandwiches are huge, and the quality is fantastic. I've gone multiple times in the same weekend and have to now restrain myself to once a week. I've tried three different sandwiches, and each one was loaded with meat, cheese, and toppings. The veggies are incredibly fresh, and every sandwich looks beautiful. They provide a very moderate amount of condiments so ask for light if you prefer light! I always pre-order and then pick up my sandwiches, and I wish they had a pick up area so I didn't have to wait in line pick my sandwich up. But the staff is nice so it's fine. Last time I even found some smarties in my take out order, which was cute. I wish they had a rewards program, but that's only because I'm hooked. Great place, great location!
google avatar

Yelp
Their chai lattes are delicious (try getting it with pumpkin!!) & they're always kind and helpful, even to the dozens of high school students on campus at lunchtime. The non-cafe part of the store has cute novelty gift options, but they're very overpriced. I've gotten some cute NC-themed postcards and gifts that I love!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by here to grab some gifts for a family gathering. The staff was super helpful and gave me some great ideas. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Solid spot in Brightleaf! Sandwiches and breakfast items are consistent and delicious. I most recently had the PB&B&B - extra B is for BACON! It was delightful. The coleslaw is not overly mayo-ed and refreshing. The service is prompt and the outdoor patio is perfect on a beautiful day. I also opted for a rose cardamom latte with almond milk and it was lovely and well crafted. The shop/market inside is a perfect place to find a gift, shop local, or just get lost for hours. From bin candy, to fun greeting cards, to kitchen items to local beers, I am a fan. There are even cute enamel pins/buttons for collectors out there! Overall, this spot is a great place to grab a sandwich, a cup of coffee, and have great conversations with friends! Unassuming and friendly, I don't think you can go wrong here!
google avatar

Yelp
I can never tell whether the sandwiches at Parker & Otis are overpriced but I keep finding myself back here every week for an expertly crafted roast beef with horseradish or Turkey breast with red pepper jelly. $10 for a sandwich is kind of a lot but like, they are tight . The sandwiches are simple and straightforward and will frustrate you at your inability to make anything that tastes as good with whatever you have in your fridge. These are my secret weapon on overnight hiking trips - they keep super well in a lunchbox and are a treat out in the mountains.
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
Adorable spot with delicious sandwiches. I ordered the tuna and it was fresh, tasty and humongous. Definitely a shareable lunch if you're not solo.
google avatar

Jenny P.

Yelp
Shrimp BLT alllll the way! (if you're down to spend a few extra bucks, definitely upgrade the side to the curry chicken salad - yes, I was a bit put off by the name also but I promise you it's good!) The parking is not so great and it can get pretty crowded inside, but it's just so good! My fiance and I make the trip when we're craving the shrimp BLT - trust me, you'll start having those cravings too. I love the interior decor and architecture, too. The shop connected to the restaurant is a great idea, and they have so many cute knick-knacks to look at while waiting.

Andrew W.

Yelp
Parker and Otis is one of the best sandwich shops I have been to. I really like the #25 and the #26. I've also had the #9 which was pretty good. They have a semi unique take on sandwiches and I really like them.
google avatar

Cynthia F.

Yelp
Such a cool little shop and great food! My friend and I came here for an afternoon lunch and it was definitely busy. You walk in and there's a shop area, and then there's a little deli. They have a sandwich menu, but also have some really great looking salads in their deli window. You can order a sandwich that comes with coleslaw, or you can order a combination of salads as a meal also. It was a SUPER hot day, but I don't know, I was just craving a good grilled cheese and tomato soup! Luckily we were eating inside so I wasn't melting (no pun intended). Everything turned out great! I wish the tomato soup had been more of a creamy tomato soup, but it was still very tasty. It's fun that before/after your meal you can walk around and look at the little knick-knacks.

Yelp
I love the new location of Parker and Otis on American tobacco campus. It's a cute little shop where you can order food/coffee at the register and take it out to eat on a beautiful day. I came for breakfast with a group from work and had the turkey and pepper jelly sandwich, which was a great choice. The coffee is just right, and I've heard great things about the tea as well.
google avatar

Nancy N.

Yelp
You gotta love Parker and Otis. It's easily a one stop shop for coffee, lunch and something special for yourself or loved ones. If you like browsing, make sure you check out the entire shop and not just the "back". I've had some friends not know the front portion even existed. I love how P&O has a variety of healthy options, plenty of salads and sandwiches, everything in between (i.e. chocolate fix). I just need to get around to coming here more frequently. Looking forward to lounging on their patio on a beautiful day!
google avatar

Allyce B.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and was decently pleased. I loved all the little Knick-knacks that are available for purchase. When you first arrive, it's a bit confusing of what to do to order breakfast/lunch. We walked the entire length of the store and back before we finally realized we were supposed to order at the middle register. I got the Broccoli and Tomato Scramble (swapping the toast for their house-made cheddar biscuit) and the husband got the BLT. You then seat yourself and they will bring your food out and call your name. I was decently satisfied with my breakfast. Plenty of eggs and loved the veggies! I tried both strawberry jam and blueberry jam with the biscuit. It was pretty good, but not spectacular. Husband liked his BLT, but was surprised to find the egg comes on the sandwich, not on the side. Just a heads up.

Yelp
I looovvveee Parker & Otis! I chose this place because my friend was in town and we wanted Breakfast in Durham. My friend Had already tried but this was my first time. It's like walking into an amazing bookstore, slash food place and just everything store and I absolutely loved. I ordered the BLT and my friend had something different. I paid about $16 for everything and we also ordered coffee + lattes. The atmosphere was so nice. I love the wall decor in the dining area my favorite was the clocks. The bathroom was really clean and gender neutral which is great. The parking is a lot reasonable I was able to find a park at the front of the store you do have to pay. The sad part I ended up getting a ticket because the guy that gave me the ticket didn't look at my tags right. So I am in the process of disputing it now. So beware. The place has really big windows which is good for natural lighting. They also have a great selection of wine. Overall nice store and I have been telling people about it since the day I went.
google avatar

Whitney W.

Yelp
I got the BLT. Lotttts of krispy yummy bacon. Because lettuce and tomato are bland I felt like it needed a little salt and pepper or maybe a more herb infused Mayo. I'm just a traveler passing by and but I probably wont return just for the food itself but the store itself is was a dream.
google avatar

Ander C.

Yelp
What a unique spot in downtown Durham! Really enjoyed the old style decor here and the layout of the shop. Packed iwth all of this really interesting things from food to coffee to puzzles and books. it's quite an eclectic place. This review is for the Shrimp BLT sandwich. I think if you like seafood and want something filling and delicious you need to order this. My wife got the tuna sandwich which she said was good but I think in terms of degree of goodness - the Shrimp BLT was the main attraction. Definitely will be coming back for that.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Cool spot downtown. Visited after a beer festival, so it was great we could walk here from the Bulls Stadium and they had much needed food/snacks! General store meets restaurant, meets hangout spot... is how I would describe Parker & Otis. There's a ton of stuff (merch) to look at to browse as well as look at while dining in. I saw lots of folks meeting up for a bite, or folks that were pounding away on their laptops. Had a much needed grilled cheese sandwich with chips. Delicious! The staff are super nice. Order at the counter and it will be brought to you when it is cooked to order.

AJ R.

Yelp
I ordered a simple drink online and waited over 40 minutes to receive it. I watched several other guests be checked on and asked about their orders and no one inquired to see if I needed any assistance. After waiting past the time my pick up order was supposed to be ready, I approached the counter and was told that pick up order had to check in. There was no signage or notes about this in my my confirmation email, nor my text. No one apologized to me or offered me anything for my inconvenience. It was extremely unsettling and disturbing to watch them clearly overlook certain customers versus others. It may be awhile before they get my service again if ever due to such poor customer service.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
We really like the place - it's unique, fun and had really cool stuff: puzzles, journals, cards, kitchen stuff, kid and baby toys, and candy that I didn't even know was still made! So all of that was worth 5 stars. While the food was good, it wasn't as great as I expected based on all the reviews and write ups. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It's annoying that you get Cole slaw as a side, and have to pay $2 for any other side. Cole slaw just doesn't go with every single sandwich. The egg salad was creamy but it didn't have any kick to it and the bread was tough; the pimento cheese was average but was grilled perfectly, and the mozzarella tomato sandwich was good but was dry - more dressing was needed. Also, they rush you through the line so you don't even have time to think about what they asked (and no I'm not a slow orderer, and no the line wasn't long). They have a nice open inside eating area, and the outside balcony is great. The sandwiches were also priced very fairly, and they have a great selection of drinks.
google avatar

Lacy D.

Yelp
What a cute, eclectic spot! Spacious and bright with beautiful wood floors. Lots of things to take in - seating in front, trinkets and specialty foods in the middle, more seating on the back patio and a little bar to order coffee in the back. There's also a counter to order food from the menu or out of a display case. It was a beautiful day so we ordered coffee and pastries (the lemon poppyseed muffin at $1.50 was an excellent choice), and settled in on the patio. I ordered a flat white with almond milk ($4.60), only to see iced coffee at the bottom of the menu seconds later. Oh well - a great reason to return! I really enjoyed this spot and definitely recommend a visit!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in to order sandwiches to eat on the patio. There were 20+ choices. Purchased the chicken salad sandwich. The bread was tasty and nicely toasted. The checked was cut up pieces in a mayo based sauce. Wanted to really like it but was at best average. They did sell zapps potato chips from Louisiana which were tasty.

Yelp
Perfect place to buy presents! Great wine selection. Coffee and sandwich bar also available inside. Tried the turkey and it was really good.

Yelp
A Durham institution! I make a point of dropping in for breakfast whenever I'm in town. It's part coffee shop, part restaurant, part bookstore, and part bodega of cool stuff you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere. One of my favorite things about Parker and Otis are the book quotes that are framed near the books. They always put me in a good mood. I usually get one of the egg dishes and a cup of black coffee. At some point I'll probably East lunch there and check out some other items on their menu.
google avatar

Yelp
I've lived in Raleigh for over two years, frequenting Durham. How did I never know about this place? They have the greatest setup and somehow it all works. Unique gifts and cards (think indie, letter pressed, hipster goodness and great companies like Meri Meri for party stuff) and the cutest coffee shop up front, deli in the middle and more gifts and such in the back. They carry seasonal items too like Christmas and Thanksgiving, and have a wedding section for couples planning their wedding. And plenty of "Will you be my bridesmaid?" type things for a bride. They have wine and beer, great affordable food and so much to look at while you eat (inside) my eyes couldn't stop wandering. They have a great exterior patio too. I had a BLT special sandwich (with chevre cheese) which was delicious. They even had Diet Dr Brown's Black Cherry soda, a special treat this NY native enjoys. AND I added a deviled egg to my order for $0.75. Two sandwiches, the deviled egg and soda all came to an affordable $16 and change. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for lunch with outdoor seating. Our group had the ham and smoked Gouda sandwich, BLT with tons of bacon, turkey and Havarti and curried chicken salad. Ingredients super fresh, and when you're done eating, can spend some coin on a gift or two inside. Seems like the building used to be some sort of factory with loading dock, and lots of ironwork and sculpture as part of the design. Yet another reliable food spot near downtown Durham I'd go back to.
google avatar

Sibi K.

Yelp
One of my guaranteed stops every time I'm back in the area. Simple outdoor eating area which is perfect on a crisp autumn day. The brunch is delicious, with options ranging from fluffy eggs and stuffed lox bagels to a wide assortment of sandwiches. The cheese biscuits themselves get their own sentence. Nice selection of alcohol to pair with meals. Buy a bottle of champagne if you're feeling extra happy.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
I tried Parker & Otis catered box lunch and it was really delicious. I personally had the egg salad sandwich and it was very fresh and delicious. They use a firm sourdough bread and fresh greens in the salad as well. I wouldn't recommend this specific sandwich if you are not a fan of mayonnaise. The boxed lunch also comes with fresh fruit (which I think is awesome because catered lunch usually comes with a bag of chips) and a cookie. The cookie is very chew and taste home-made. I heard from others that the turkey and mango chutney sandwich was very delicious as well. Overall, great lunch!

Yelp
This remains a fun place for dining and shopping! I met friends there for Sunday brunch recently, and got a grilled pimento cheese sandwich and a spinach salad on the side. SO yummy!
