Best New Cookbooks: Fall 2020 | Eater

"Owned by Zelmai and Farida Ayubi after their 1987 flight from Afghanistan, this popular Afghan restaurant in South Adelaide serves as the heart of a cookbook that doubles as a history lesson: interwoven essays on the Silk Road, the Mughal empire, and the Great Game show how trade and cultural exchange shaped Afghan food. The recipes reproduce classics like kabuli palaw, shaami kebab, and falooda in ways that are approachable for home cooks, and the collection emphasizes how Afghan cuisine both influenced and was influenced by the rest of Asia." - Eater Staff

Parwana is hands down one of my favourite spots in Adelaide with great traditional Afghan food that satisfies Each dish is made with pride and fills the belly, You can really tell how much pride they take in what they serve. I also love that they offer half portions for smaller groups, so you can sample a variety of dishes – such a clever idea! The prices are also very reasonable for the exceptional quality. Only downside is the place is a bit out of the way. Parwana is definitely one I’ll keep coming back to.

Menu is small and simple, but the food was so tasty. Everything we ordered was delicious and above our expectations in terms of food quality and taste. Service was great. Nice slow music, you can have a conversation and enjoy the meal. If you want drinks, it is BYO. So make sure to get your alcohol since they don’t provide alcohol at the restaurant. This is the best Afghan food I have ever had. 5stars for everything. Will visit again.

We visited late on a weeknight for dinner. It was busy and very popular we thought. We ordered the vegetable fritters, dumplings, rice and the chicken dish. The menu is small with a few selections for each course, brilliant. It's simple! The food was fresh and cooked well but for us it was disappointing with actual flavour. We felt it was all under seasoned and needed more spices, Bland and lacked that wow factor I was hoping for. It was over $110 for a soft drink each, shared entree, rice, dumplings and the chicken. The gentleman that owns it was lovely. We had a long chat with him about his family history and his story. The restaurant is warm and inviting with family photos up on the walls. If only the food was as sensational as we'd been told it was. We would definitely go back if it was. We may revisit and see if it was just a one off.

The menu seemed quite limited, not a lot of options. Although have to give credit where it’s due as each dish packed a lot of flavour and also was very quick to come out probably due to the fact everyone else is ordering the same dishes. Filling portions, with only 3 dishes we were very full between the two of us. The lamb was the highlight, very flavourful and spiced well. The lamb was also soft and easy to chew. The chutney was minty and paired well with the lamb. The eggplant dish was nice and the eggplant taste was strong not overpowered by the seasonings. The fried dumplings were still crisp despite the lamb mince and yoghurt on top. The restaurant is quite popular which makes the environment loud with chatter, so if you’re looking for a quaint and quiet place to eat, this is not the restaurant for you. Overall a good restaurant to try Afghan dishes.

We had an amazing dinner. The food was extraordinary, very decadent, and wholesome. The idea that the food is made we love. Exclusively byo and the staff were so knowledgeable and charismatic. Such a pleasure. We ordered the eggplant, the dumplings, and the dips. Highly recommend

We dined in on 20th Sept 2025. The food was good and all but it was quickly clouded and tainted by the rude blonde middle-aged female wait staff who was inattentive and rude from the minute we stepped into the place. She couldn’t even manage a smile. She would get impatient for you doing the bare minimum of making an order 🙄 pretty sure she was racist. On top of that the potato stuffed bread we got had a hair in it! She tried to put on her best acting skills to pretend not to see it when I pointed it out, but I was like “it’s there alright!” She quickly whisked the plate of evidence away but when we asked if we could get a fresh batch, they were stingy and instead she lied that they had ran out of potato, even though out of the limited menu, there were a few dishes that had potato in it and they had only opened at 12 and we came right at the beginning and no one else was there before us! Are you telling me you only had 1 measly potato?🤦🏻‍♀️ The best they could do was to take the item off our bill she said. And just stingy overall, can’t give a bag when we did take away for our leftover food. When I asked if I could get milk on the side of the chai tea, she said she wasn’t sure if they do have milk to give on the side even though she also said she’s been working there for years 🙄 after the hair incident, she just treated us like a liability because they were humiliated. We saw the owner too, she was aight but not great, very nonchalant. I suspect the actual chef was a male in the back, props to him. But unfortunately his cooking efforts were ruined by the people around him. The hair incident could’ve been easily forgiven if the attitude of the female staff was better and more cordial/humble. So it’s 1star and 0 for service if it was possible. And they wonder why they used to have many customers but not so much anymore - maybe try getting better customer service?? Food alone won’t cut it when you’re rude to your diners. Be warned fellow diners.

Had a beautiful meal here. Stand outs were the eggplant and the rice with candied orange. Also the dips were delicious. Pricing was great we ordered heaps of food and a drink each and paid $55 per person (2 people). Staff were friendly and happy to chat about the food and processes. A lovely night

Some may say it’s like Egyptian/middle-eastern…. Indian or even Malay. But if Parwana is anything to go by, the Afghan cuisine is a mish-mosh of all of the above, and shaped by their own unique identity. Homey, soul-filling food in a warm and cosy setting that is reminiscent of someone’s livving area in that part of the world. Brilliant dinner in my first Adelaide outing. (Thanks Phil Rosenthal). Kabuli Palaw (rice half -portion) Qormeh Gosfand (lamb korma) Karayee Morgh (pan fried chicken) Banjaan Borani (eggplant not pictured)
