Best New Cookbooks: Fall 2020 - Eater

"The story of Parwana, the popular Afghan restaurant in South Adelaide, Australia, has always been intertwined with history. Owners Zelmai and Farida Ayubi fled Afghanistan for Australia in 1987, during the Cold War, itself the result of hundreds of years of conflict. So it’s no surprise that the restaurant’s cookbook, written by Zelmai and Farida’s daughter Durkhanai Ayubi, would double as a history lesson. Interspersed between recipes are stories of the Silk Road, the Mughal empire, and the Great Game, which illustrate how because of trade, plunder, and cultural exchange, Afghan cuisine is both beloved and recognizable." - Eater Staff

All the food was amazing and well portioned, staff were all lovely too. My favourite dishes were definitely the eggplant dish and the dumplings, I would also recommend the rose drink. Great night thank you!

Dined in on a Friday night (luckily squeezed in without a reservation but definitely recommend booking as they were booked out and turned away several walk-ins after us). Food was phenomenal! First time trying Afghan food for us so hard to compare, but table faves were banjaan borani (eggplant dish) and the mantu (steamed dumplings). Can see why this place is so highly regarded as a local fave!

Love the food here. Karayee Gosfand is definitely a yes. The lamb pieces are so flavourful. Ashak and kabuli palaw are not bad as well. Would suggest NOT to go for half serve kabuli palaw. If u can't finish the rice, u can always take away. Staff members are nice and friendly. Would suggest booking. Cherry sharbat tastes good too.

I had very high expectations after reading various reviews and recommendations. The food was very good but just a little below what I was expecting as an overall dining experience, also taking the price point into consideration. Service was a little slow on the floor as may have been understaffed on the night. We tried all the vegetarian dishes on the menu. Favourite dishes were the veggie fritters and chick pea curry. Date halva dessert and pistachio ice cream also very good. Naan bread was disappointing as expected it to be made up fresh and be soft and fluffy.

Food overall average. Quite pricey. Ordered Signature eggplant, tasted good but a bit oily, portion was a bit small. Ordered Dahl, was $18 but portion was quite small too, the menu mentioned Dahl made with red and yellow lentils, but only yellow lentils used, and tasted a bit weird. Ordered Gosfand, the dipping sauce was refreshing, and lamb portion was good. But the lamb was lacking of flavour. desserts- saffron pudding hasn’t got any taste, and ice cream was too sweet to me. Overall good, but not gonna back to try other dishes. Not worth the price.

Another delicious experience at Parwana this evening with a friend. We had the dips, the lamb dumplings, eggplant and chicken. It was also super delicious and such a unique and interesting set of flavours and texture combinations. The device was friendly and efficient and there was a nice buzz in the room. I can see why it's so popular and would definitely go back again when I'm in town

Amazing restaurant. The food quality was incredible and our first Afghan food experience and boy were we impressed. The portion sizes are very generous; the flavour incredible. 10 $ corkage enabled us to bring a very nice bottle Which was awesome. Very busy for a Wednesday night. Highly recommend

Bought takeaway cause dine in gets busy very quickly even right at 5pm. Dumplings were a standout from what I ordered. Enjoyed the Afghan flavours as they share similarities with other middle eastern dishes. Would go again as the to try the other dishes as they sound good but I didn’t want to over order.
