Best New Cookbooks: Fall 2020 | Eater

"Owned by Zelmai and Farida Ayubi after their 1987 flight from Afghanistan, this popular Afghan restaurant in South Adelaide serves as the heart of a cookbook that doubles as a history lesson: interwoven essays on the Silk Road, the Mughal empire, and the Great Game show how trade and cultural exchange shaped Afghan food. The recipes reproduce classics like kabuli palaw, shaami kebab, and falooda in ways that are approachable for home cooks, and the collection emphasizes how Afghan cuisine both influenced and was influenced by the rest of Asia." - Eater Staff

Why Adelaide Is Australia’s Most Exciting Food and Wine Destination

"I visited Parwana, a longstanding Afghani mom-and-pop shop energized by the owner's creative daughters, and felt it was perhaps the coolest Afghani restaurant in Australia for its vibrant, updated take on family cooking." - Kevin West Kevin West Kevin West is a writer, food consultant, and “canning evangelist” (according to NPR). We weee super excited to try Parwana, having heard great things and tried this cuisine before. We ordered 3 main sharing plates. 3 main plates for 2 people was ample as the serving as quite generous. The eggplant; chicken and fried dumplings. There was no bad dish here. The eggplant one of their specialties was amazing, great flavour. Dumplings were crunchy was soft filling and the chicken with the mint dressing was superb. Note this restaurant is DYO alcohol, which unfortunately we were not aware of, not that it changed the outcome of our experience. Overall great restaurant fully booked for both sittings on a Tuesday night. Highly recommend a group of 4 or more to experience more dishes as we would have loved to try more.

This place is crazy! Soooo worth a visit. We didn’t have a bad dish. The eggplant was the standout as it was suggested to us. I came for the bread and wasn’t disappointed. The team that work here are brilliant. The prices are excellent.

Absolutely phenomenal Afghani cuisine! We ordered the banquet menu to share amongst seven people, and every dish was incredible. Everything was made with care and they were very accommodating for my dietary restrictions. The service was excellent and the restaurant was beautifully decorated as well. Seriously some of the best food I’ve ever had in a restaurant! If you’re in the Adelaide area, you have to try this place.

What a fun place! A noisy and buzzy atmosphere. We ordered a half serve of the Narenj Palaw (long grain rice topped with candied orange peel, slivered almonds and pistachios), Banjarmasin Borani (eggplant simmered in fresh tomato sauce, topped with garlic yoghurt and mint) and Karayee Morgh which is pan fried chicken pieces marinated in yoghurt and coated in traditional spice mix. It was served with naan, salad and chutney. Very generous serves and we saw many take their leftovers home with them - always a good sign! The venue is licensed but only to allow alcohol (so byo), they don’t serve/sell it

Lunch @Parwana.Kitchen for some Afghan fare. Khamir Baab - fried dumplings stuffed with leek, topped with a lamb mint sauce and dressed with garlic yoghurt, paprika and mint. Glad they offer half serves to get some variety. The dumplings have a nice light crunch on the outside and a lovely spiced lamb mince filling on the inside. Along with the yoghurt sauce this is a really delicious dish to start the meal. Banjaan Borani - our signature eggplant simmered in fresh tomato sauce, topped with garlic yoghurt and mint. Very interesting dish with the eggplant preparation being different to any dish I've seen before. Soft, tender, but holding together in nice chunks immersed in mild spices, the touch of yoghurt sauce adds a nice touch of freshness, sourness, and creaminess. Delicious. Kubali Palaw - an aged long grain rice topped with caramelised carrots, sultanas, shivered almonds and pistachios (half serve). I've not seen pilaf made with carrots but they can do whatever they want when you make a dish this good. Really loose light plump rice grains with the nuts and burst of sweetness from the currants making this excellent to eat on its own or with a curry. Qormeh Gosfand - diced lamb served in a rich tomato and onion sauce flavoured with a mix of traditional spices. The lamb is plentiful and tender immersed in a lovely curry with milder spices than the Indian version which has greater intensity. Delicious dish enjoyed with the pilaf to sop up the curry. Persian Love Cake - rose and pistachio cake soaked in a lemon and cardamom syrup served with house made cardamom ice cream. The cake has quite a floral flavour, not at all sweet, the finely crushed pistachios add further depth. Complimented by the ice cream adding a slight creaminess and sweetness with well controlled use of cardamom pproviding a savoury element. Pesta Shiryakh - housemade rose and pistachio ice cream. Smooth and creamy with a lovely pistachio flavour and well balanced use of rose syrup. Very enjoyable meal enjoying a variety of flavourful dishes without an intensity of spice in a lovely relaxed atmosphere and great service to boot. #AfghanFood #lunch #dumplings #pilaf #eggplant #lambkorma #curry #PersianaLoveCake #icecream #dessert #sweettooth #Foodie #Adelaidefood #Torrensville

Parwana is hands down one of my favourite spots in Adelaide with great traditional Afghan food that satisfies Each dish is made with pride and fills the belly, You can really tell how much pride they take in what they serve. I also love that they offer half portions for smaller groups, so you can sample a variety of dishes – such a clever idea! The prices are also very reasonable for the exceptional quality. Only downside is the place is a bit out of the way. Parwana is definitely one I’ll keep coming back to.

Menu is small and simple, but the food was so tasty. Everything we ordered was delicious and above our expectations in terms of food quality and taste. Service was great. Nice slow music, you can have a conversation and enjoy the meal. If you want drinks, it is BYO. So make sure to get your alcohol since they don’t provide alcohol at the restaurant. This is the best Afghan food I have ever had. 5stars for everything. Will visit again.

We visited late on a weeknight for dinner. It was busy and very popular we thought. We ordered the vegetable fritters, dumplings, rice and the chicken dish. The menu is small with a few selections for each course, brilliant. It's simple! The food was fresh and cooked well but for us it was disappointing with actual flavour. We felt it was all under seasoned and needed more spices, Bland and lacked that wow factor I was hoping for. It was over $110 for a soft drink each, shared entree, rice, dumplings and the chicken. The gentleman that owns it was lovely. We had a long chat with him about his family history and his story. The restaurant is warm and inviting with family photos up on the walls. If only the food was as sensational as we'd been told it was. We would definitely go back if it was. We may revisit and see if it was just a one off.
