The 15 Best Patisseries in Paris for Croissants, Cakes, and Eclairs | Eater

"Gilles Marchal already made his mark on the pastry world as head chef at the Crillon, the Plaza Athénée, Le Bristol, and La Maison du Chocolat, but Parisians from all parts of town make the trek to the heart of Montmartre for his namesake patisserie. His madeleines are divine, in flavors like lemon zest, grand cru dark chocolate, pine honey, and pistachio. Not surprisingly, his renditions of French classics like baba au rhum and tarte aux framboises are equally flawless. Located in the 18th arrondissement." - Dayna Evans

The Best Bakeries in Paris, According to a Local | Condé Nast Traveler

"This is the independent pastry shop from chef Gilles Marchal, who's known for his madeleines (in flavors like lemon zest, grand cru dark chocolate, pine honey, and pistachio), his sablé (shortbread) cookies, and his spirited renditions on classic desserts (like baba au rhum). If you visit in January, you must try Marchal's famous galette des rois (King's Cake). The space has a warm and inviting feel, partially because of its compact size." - Lindsey Tramuta

Excellent pastry. Bought their Eclair, although it’s €5 each (slightly expensive), but the quality is top notch which makes every penny counts. Highly recommended!

Beautiful patisserie! The pastries here are like works of art! They’re too pretty to eat, but they taste soooo good! This is one of my favorite places in Montmartre for croissants and cakes! They’re worth the money!

Very average, not worth a visit. We tried their chocolate eclair and 2 madeleines (lemon and praline) that are their best sellers. The eclair was way too sweet, you could barely taste the chocolate at all. The madeleines were okay, but not worth a detour.

We were here for the madeleines, have to say it’s quite a let down, it’s good but nothing special. Friendly service and beautiful pastry shop.

Only tried one item from here, a cheesy soft pretzel but it was sooooo delish and I wish I had more. €10 credit card minimum. So many delish options to choose from that it was hard to pick just one. Definitely need to go back for more next time I’m in town. Also not crowded at all and a quick purchase.

I went to this patisserie in 2015 for my first time. My family and I fell in love with their madeleines at first taste, so we kept coming back every time we visited Paris. Unfortunately, in 2023, we were served by a woman who was extremely rude. While I was making an effort to speak French, she acted as if she couldn’t understand me at all, which made the whole experience TERRIBLE. (A kind French woman standing behind me even confirmed that my French was pretty good and that what I was asking for was totally understandable.) Today, I decided to give this place one last chance—despite having promised myself in 2023 that I would never return. Sadly, this time it was even worse. The same woman served me again. She once again corrected my French in a condescending and unpleasant way. I asked for a “normal madeleine”, and she rudely told me that the correct term was “naturelle.” Then, after ordering the madeleine and a coffee, she said my purchase was too cheap and refused to let me pay by card. After waiting in line for 5 minutes, I had to leave without getting anything. I don’t know who this woman is, but she completely ruined the image I had of this pâtisserie. I will never go back.

Yelp
Love love love this place! I'm so glad we went here because I love madeleines. I got one of each flavor and I have no regrets. They were so light and fluffy and moist. The flavors were also amazing. I liked the one with the chocolate shell the best. I'd come back here everyday if I could.

Yelp
We've been in Paris for two weeks and these were the best viennoiseries we've had so far. The croissant was perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The kouign amman was also nicely crispy. The chausson au pommes and canalé were also perfect!

Yelp
Wow - their madeleines are divine! My family and I were taken to this bakery by our awesome tour guide (thanks to the Withlocals company), and we're glad we did! We each tried a different flavor of their madeleines and I chose the marbled chocolate and vanilla flavor. It had chocolate chips mixed in, was light, airy, and moist. We even bought a small bag of mini madeleines in their original flavor to take home. It was a bit pricey, but the flavors and super moist texture were still there after getting back home. Wish y'all had a branch in Texas!

Yelp
Simply sublime! We took a taxi to Montmartre and then walked forever to find this gem of a pastry shop and it was worth every kilometer and step. The arlette in my humble opinion was particularly outstanding, classic in color and texture with a wonderful and memorable taste. Mind you we took back to the apartment numerous treats each outdoing the next. Highly recommendable and we shall return before our Parisian respite comes to a close!

Yelp
The lemon Madeline is to diiiie for. 2 euros per Madeline... I want mooore! Its a regular madeline with a lemon glaze. The madeline itself is dense but soft n fluffy and melts in your mouth. They have chocolate, pistachio, caramel filled (just a lil squirt) and lemon and orange. Yummy yummy!!! I highly recommend this place for madelines.

Yelp
Utterly amazing pastries. We came back twice in the same day + once before we left for the airport. The pistachio croissant was LITERAL HEAVEN - seriously, the marzipan filling was unlike anything I've ever tasted. A true gem tucked away in Montmartre

Yelp
Gilles Marchal is a pastry shop in the middle of Montmartre that you just can't afford to miss - their cakes and cookies are just out of this world. Granted, they're not the cheapest but both my (French) boyfriend and I figured that it's totally worth it because trust me - once you take a bite of their perfect Madeleines, you won't be able to have "just one". We came here twice during our recent Paris stay and the first time we went we opted for the classic Madeleines and the chouquettes - if you don't know what chouquettes are trust me, it's about time you tried one. I also got a coffee and we went to sit down in the little square on the hill on the other side of the road. The original Madeleines are perfect - airy, delicate, sponge-y, just what you would expect and wish for. The smallest quantity of chouquettes you can buy is six - but trust me, it's worth it. Just make sure to finish them pretty quickly, they taste the best eaten the same day they were baked. The second time around we came in right before closing and they were out of original Madeleines, so we tried the chocolate, orange and lemon flavors. Out of these, the orange flavor and the chocolate ones are definitely worth trying; the lemon ones can be good if you're into lemon flavored pastry but otherwise, go for the orange. We also wanted chouquettes and since they had eight left and we wanted six, we got the two remaining ones for free. Make sure to bookmark this pastry shop and remember to buy the Madeleines. So gooood!!

Yelp
Delicious little cookies, cakes and madeleines.
