"Nothing warms the heart quite like nostalgia and melty cheese at Patty’s Original Cheese Zombies. The brainchild of two lunch ladies who worked for the Mt. Diablo School District in the 1960s, these cheesy buns made for a delicious hot lunch, and former students have clamored for that deliciousness ever since. The zombies were brought back to life years later by a local baker named Patty, who mastered the challenge of containing the cheese and other fillings so that they don’t leak out like zombie innards. Daily zombies include original cheese, ham and cheese, and breakfast (egg, bacon, sausage, and cheese). On select days, Patty’s also serves such specials as pastrami, chicken bacon ranch, pizza, and taco zombies — all great takeout items for a portable and hot lunch." - Rebecca Shea

We got the biscuits and Gravy, bacon, breakfast and hot dog zombies. My fav was the biscuits and Gravy on by far! Also got a sprinkle cookie that was ok. As a non American cheese fan, the ones without it were my fav.

We drove all the way from Sac because a co-worker recommended this place. The Pizza Zombies were awesome, reminds me of home made pizza hot pockets. The best were the breakfast zombies, filled with egg, cheese, bacon, and sausage, they are a perfect way to start the day. We also got a couple of the Original Cheese Zombies and they were oh so cheesey. I will be back to try their Jalapeno offerings. We also got a lemon bar and they were not overly sweet.

To go odrer , no seating area. The cashier is friendly and helpful. I ordered a zoomie hot dog. Nice soft bread with lots of flavor.

Google
Just like Concord High School in the 80s !!! 6 bucks got me a big a$$ sausage and cheese zombie... It was closing time so the dude gave me one for free... Up front parking... Friendly staff...

Google
It’s was amazing!! I got that pizza zombie greasy goodness

Google
Friendly service and the food is ready to go right away. I got the breakfast zombie. Melty cheese. Sausage. Egg. Warm bread case. Really can't complain. Reasonable price point.

I got the cheese zombie and it was delicious and the worker was really kind.

Yelp
Talk about ideal weather for some comfort food. Made my way to grab two zombies late this morning and they did not disappoint. Chorizo Breakfast and Jalapeno Breakfast. The chorizo one got flattened on accident by yours truly. Flavors and freshness are as good as ever!

Yelp
This place is honestly a great treat for your coworkers for a special breakfast, birthdays, and or meetings. These pastries are literally baked first thing in the morning. I each handed my coworkers their own and were super surprised at how they were still super warm. I didn't get any complaints from my coworkers, they loved them and even with the hit of tapatio on it was a hit for us. I will say, these Zombie Patty's are hearty in the morning. So if you are planning to have to pay attention at work or school, I would eat only half and then save the rest for break to reheat - LOL.

Yelp
Yummmmmmm Great nostalgic and easy to carry. These little and big pastries are just perfect

Yelp
The ham and cheese Zombies need to have the ham unfolded and spread throughout the cheese zombie. The ham is packed in the middle. Please don't except this as acceptable. I have eaten these for years and I finally switched out of frustration for the spicy sausage zombie that has a wrapper that reads Hot Dog. Im going to check out Rob's Zombies (which I do not support) and see if they do the same unacceptable ham stuffing. I live close to both his stores on a ranch and I only support you. Yelp
This place has me staggered! How can something so simple taste so good? Patty's Zombies are amazing. They are fast, warm, affordable and tasty. I can't think of anything else I could possibly want when I am looking to indulge a craving. If I lived closer I would be here every day and they have lots of flavor options to choose from so I doubt I would ever get bored. I have tried the ham and cheese and sausage and cheese so far and I can't wait to try more. The convenience, the value and the savory flavors are here folks. IYKNK. If you haven't tried this location yet, then in the words (and voice) of Shia LaBeouf "Do it!"

Yelp
I had a random urge to grab a zombie and I remember this place being nearby from where I was. It has been several years since my last update, so decided to give this place a try again. Pizza Zombie: The bread is like Parmesan crusted, which really makes it delicious for a pizza based zombie. The insides were also plentiful with cheese, pepperoni and the marinara sauce. It was also very warm and the bread was quite delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Jalapeño and Cheese: I wanted to give a non meat option a try and this one looked good. The worker gave me a fresh baked one from the oven, which I greatly appreciated. I must have been unlucky with my cutting skills since most if not all the jalapeños were on one side and the other was just plain cheese. Still, I enjoyed the heat of the zombie and the cheese was gooey and yummy. Overall, I enjoyed the zombies I ordered and I look forward to coming back again.

Yelp
Nothing better than a warm cheesey bread bun!! I wish I grew up here because I would've loved to have these as a school lunch! The ham & cheese was delicious - lots of melted cheese and slices of ham warmly secured in the foil sandwich bag. The cookie display was enticing so we got some cookies as well. I would've preferred the snickerdoodle to be softer like the chocolate chip was, but it was still good! Lots of parking in this shopping plaza - at least when we got there in the morning, it was pretty empty. Service was friendly!

Yelp
This was delicious! I had heard about the cheese zombies, and finally decided to give it a try. I got the breakfast zombie (egg, cheese - obviously, sausage and bacon). The bacon slid down to the last couple of bites, but the zombie was delicious! The only thing that I wish, is that they were... smaller! They are so big and filing that it was kind of overwhelming! I kind of wish they were half the size for my own inability to control myself!

Yelp
A solid 4.8. Since I had to spend the day on the road, I decided to find something random from somewhere I've never been before. If you grew up going to school in MDUSD, then you know all about cheese zombies. They are simply melted American cheese in a bread roll and baked. I didn't know that eating a cheese zombie was possible after all these years, so I decided why not. As a control, I ordered the original cheese and as a variable, I went for the biscuits and gravy. The cheese instantly took me back to 4th grade, but this was better than what I had in school. The biscuits and gravy was the star, though. When I opened the packaging and took a bite, the sauce really complemented the bread, exactly like how gravy smothers a biscuit. It was ridiculously tasty and I really enjoyed the peppery aftertaste. The employee who took my order went above and beyond in helping me. I was able to use normal room voice level when I the order, but I wish they had tables. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Love it! Nice place, the hospitality was amazing, and the food served quick and delicious. Will come back for sure.

Yelp
These remind me of kolaches in Texas but bigger. I had the breakfast one and sausage ones (2 different days, 1 is enough for breakfast) and really liked both. American Cheese is the right answer more often than you'd think and they use a lot of it to good effect.

Yelp
This is was honestly MID. Not sure what all the hype is about. I guess it's very nostalgic for people who grew up in the area. Ordered the Pizza Zombie and was underwhelmed. Basically an airy hot pocket. Tasted exactly what you think a high school lunch hot pocket would taste like. $7 bucks for a hot pocket? Ehh. I did get my food pretty quick though.

Yelp
A little piece of nostalgia for those of us who had these in the local schools. Pricing is good, the staff is friendly.

Yelp
I LOVE cheese zombies. I grew up eating them in High School. I used to live nearby and would frequently get cheese zombies but ever since I moved to Walnut Creek I hadn't had one in while :( Made the drive over this morning and picked up my usual order "Jalapeño Breakfast" It was deeeeelishhhhh!! I wish they sold them unbaked so that you can bake them at home and always have fresh cheese zombies LOL I would buy those in bulk.

Yelp
love these i remember i would be so happy when i was little and my school served these for lunch. brings back memories and she has so many to choose from. This month her special is a cheese burger zombie that looks delish. will be coming back to try. my go to are the original and jalapeño cheese. service was fast and efficient.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
This place has really good zombies. We also go the pizza one which is the best but the jalapeño, ham & cheese is the 2nd best. The hot link could have been better....little underwhelming it's literally just a hot link inside barely any cheese and whole buncha bun. That would be my only complaint the price was ok to i believe it was little over 20. Definitely recommend though!
google avatar

Zoha R.

Yelp
It's definitely a cheat food kind of day. My husband loved it here! I see lots of high school kids stopping by to buy snacks. I guess it's just a place for stuffing your face with cheese--haha!
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
This place brings me back to the years of 2001-2005 in Carondelet HS where I would get a cheese zombie in the AM and delicious chocolate chips cookies as well. I love that they have the OG and then other fun variations. Their chocolate chip cookie is also quite delicious.
google avatar

Ramona G.

Yelp
I grew up in San Ramon so I didn't have Cheese Zombies growing up but I found out on Yelp that these Zombies were served to the schools in the Concord area. There were pretty good reviews online so I trekked out here during one of my lunch breaks last month to try it out for myself. I got a Breakfast Zombie that has sausage, egg and cheese inside. I told the guy working there that I had found out about the place online and he said that Patty was his mom! haha He was really nice and even gave me an Original Zombie to go :) Thank you! The Zombies were delish and perfect for a quick lunch!
google avatar

Sheila S.

Yelp
I love this place, you can't go wrong with bread and cheese, and I lived off of these at high school in the 80's and I'm so glad to have a place to get these now. Love all the new options they offer, we only had cheese and ham and cheese in school.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
My buddy grew up in Concord, and was telling me about "zombies". I was in the area and had to try one. I got a regular cheese zombie for myself, and a breakfast zombie for my Mom. The regular zombie was ok. Bread was soft and warm, and the cheese was melty and gooey. Nothing earth shattering, but tasty enough. I could see how these would be nostalgic if you are from up here. As a tourist, glad I tried them, but nothing special IMO.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
The classic "cheese zombie" is a fluffy white bread roll stuffed with ooey gooey American cheese. It's major comfort food. My favorite is the ham and cheese. They have lots of flavor choices, including pastrami, biscuits and gravy, a breakfast sandwich with eggs, sausage and bacon, and cheese. These are a family favorite- we have to have them when we're in Concord. Their prices range from $3.50-$6.25 depending on how many fillings. Highly recommend trying them if you like salt, cheese, and bread. A fun treat!

Yelp
I can't stop saying so many great things about this place! I literally grew up on these when I was going to school as a child through high school. When we had it at school it was just the cheese filled zombies. Once I heard Patty's was opening, I had to go and try it. I couldn't believe how one bite brought back so many memories! They have so many options, one of my favorites is the breakfast zombie! It's jam packed with sausage, bacon, egg and American cheese. They halos have a ham, jalapeño and cheese one. The bread is so soft and fluffy! So many flavors and a great item to get on the run. This is our go to every Sunday. If your in the concord area and need a quick bite to fill you up, hit up Patty's!

Marisa O.

Yelp
Someone either related to the Owner or hopefully not the Owner went directly behind the counter with a line full of customers and was asking his friend what he wanted, offering all sorts of flavors and multiples of it for free. Not a good look when you have paying customers in line. I spent close to $50 btw on some bread and the zombies aren't cheap.

Tanner B.

Yelp
I normally don't do reviews but I feel like I need to review. 5 stars! I've been coming here since the day they opened. Always great staff, great food and what's really great is they open at 6 on weekdays which is perfect for me on the way to work.
google avatar

Yelp
Five out of five, would recommend! No seriously, we're visiting from San Diego and my friend (east bay native) mentioned zombies, and these are amazing. I never had one and had to have one. Soft, warm, gooey, perfection. Original cheese was very tasty. Hot link and cheese was my favorite. The dude working was super super cool and friendly. The zombies were fresh out of the oven! Go get some!
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Needed a breakfast sandwich and found this place via Yelp! I ordered 2 breakfast zombies and 2 ham and cheese for the family and everyone was thoroughly impressed with their introduction to a "zombie" Additionally the staff was patient in helping us figure out what we want so we couldn't have asked for better service from a local spot!

Yelp
These are the zom-bee's knees. This place is such a cool concept. Think designer kolaches mixed with a donut shop atmosphere???? If that's possible??? It's hard to describe. Don't be put off by the strip mall appearance, the food is delicious. I love their hot and gooey ham, cheese, and jalapeño zombie! It makes for a very filling and quick breakfast or lunch. They have daily specials as well, so check those out if nothing on their staple menu is calling your name. The employees were some of the nicest I've ever come across in the Bay Area. SUPER nice people. A few of the items I wanted to order were out of stock, but they insisted on making them for me. The fresh ones only took about fifteen minutes to bake. The short wait was so worth it to have the zombie extra fresh and delicious! They even gave me an free one for making me wait. Again, realllllllllly nice people for this area! It's a little out of the way of the immediate Bay Area but I think it's worth the trip!

Yelp
Love this place. It's been here since i went to high school next door. Food is delicious and fast!

Yelp
Sometimes the most satisfying craving is something so simple like a cheese zombie. There's nothing like a warm fluffy bread roll filled with ooey gooey cheese. Patty's Original Cheese Zombies, a small family owned bakery, is located in the Dana Plaza Shopping Center. We ordered the original cheese and the ham and cheese zombies. They offer other flavors such as pizza, hot dog, and breakfast varieties. These cheese zombies bring back childhood memories of grade school for me. They were a popular lunch item offered at my school in the peninsula. Sometimes when I craved a zombie at home, toasted pandesal with a slice of American cheese did the trick! Zombies were a Mount Diablo School District favorite. Patty worked for MDUSD as a baker before she decided to pursue her own bakery featuring these wonderful treats. My kids grew up with these easy to eat hand held snacks and were always excited when they saw them on the lunch menu. If you've never experienced a zombie, you should give it a try. It's a small bite of nostalgia.
google avatar

Yelp
Yes! They're open during SIP! They're freshly baked and still warm. The cheese is oozing out of the bread!! I'm sad that they don't make pups anymore (hotdog) but they have so many varieties: breakfast variety with egg and bacon, sausage, chorizo. They also have lunch ones like pizza and bbq. But the original cheese is my all-time favorite! The staff is super friendly! YELPERS!!! Come out and support local businesses during COVID-19 SIP!

Yelp
Came to Patty's Original Cheese Zombie one morning with a friend who had been telling me about how good the zombies were. I ordered a Sausage Zombie (sausage & cheese) and a few sweet treats. The bread pocket holding the sausage & cheese was very soft and buttery. It really was also warm and complimented the warm cheese and sausage really well. It was a nice breakfast on-the-go and was filling. I also had a Lemon Bar that was really good! The lemon bar was soft, fresh, and full of lemon flavor (not too sweet not too acidic). I also had a tasty sugar cookie. Overall I would say Patty's is a nice place to pick up some yummy breakfast treats on the go.
google avatar

Ronnell N.

Yelp
Must try every item on the menu, you will not be disappointed at all. Thank you Patty for keeping the nostalgia alive
google avatar

Yelp
Another memory pulled from the depths of my childhood came to light at Patty's. I grew up on cheese zombies and absolutely loved them in school. The cheese zombie and the hot link zombie are my favorites. The hot link zombie reminds me of the "bagel dog" from high school.

Francisco A.

Yelp
If you grew up in the area and got zombies at school . This place will bring back some school yard memories. The recipe is exactly what I remember as a kid. The prices are getting up there . But I guess so is everything else. The service is always good and so are the zombies. I did notice they changed one time , but no problems since. If you want to feel like a kid again go grab a couple zombies. They will definitely hit the spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food great people what more can be said!!! Just the brisket is I believe only to be on Fridays

Yelp
Just like you remember them- 100% DELICIOUS! Grew up having these in high school, and they are still amazing.

Yelp
We were in the area and this was on my list of places to try. Who doesn't love warm cheesy gooey bread? I pretty much ordered almost one of everything of whatever they had left for the day to try. Friendly staff adhering to current health guidelines and restrictions. All of the breads were labeled so that we could tell what is what. The Original Cheese - Reminded me a melted cheese in a sweet HI roll. Delicious and Gooey. The bread was nice and soft. The Pastrami - This was probably one of the family favorite! Plenty of tasty thin slices of pastrami with added special sauce, pickles and gooey cheese. The Pizza - Also a kid favorite. This is like a warm bread hot pizza pocket. Easy to eat on the go. Plenty of easy mall parking.

Yelp
Up until 3 weeks ago I never knew what a zombie was. I guess they're a MDUSD treat given to kids here for lunch. Who knew?! Well... they're SO GOOD! Fluffy dough with a filling of your choice. My favorite is the pizza and ham and cheese. We love it! We loved it so much we ordered a lunch for DREAMCATCHERS in Oakland. We had a fundraising event and have lunch for the kids who benefit from this program. Usually homeless youth. THEY ALL LOVED IT and asked for seconds. Tip: don't forget their cookies they're bomb.com.co.org !!!!

Yelp
I don't have a lot of fond memories from high school and I don't tend to believe grown adults that tell me that they do. However, some of the few positive memories I do have come in the form of the daily fifteen minute brunch period between third and fourth period (I think). It wasn't a surprise to see the line to the cafeteria get long as students waited to get their hands on the comfort food of our adolescent years - the zombie. I'm not talking about the brain eating undead, I'm talking about a hot doughy ball of gooey melted cheese and (if you were feeling really wild) sausage. I'm not aware of high schools outside the Mount Diablo or Acalanes School Districts that sold them to students so I like to tell myself that zombies were a thing that became popularized in our neck of the woods. After graduating high school, I had made peace with the likelihood that I would never eat a zombie again. That was until recently, when I had been told by my former boss about Patty's Original Cheese Zombies and had memories thought long gone come flooding back. I knew I had to make the trek here and relive those memories at least one more time. Not to mention it would be weird as hell for a grown adult like me to visit my old high school. I was absolutely floored when I arrived and looked at the menu while the workers rushed to get the doughy balls into the ovens. Sure, Patty's sells the breakfast zombies I knew and I loved in high school. But they didn't limit themselves to just the simple stuff. They also had unique zombies like those filled with BBQ chicken, chicken pot pie, pepperoni pizza, and - what ended up being my personal favorite - biscuits and gravy. The staff was kind, patiently explained their menu items, and provided the top notch white glove customer service I always appreciate. The experience gave a very homey feel, not something I'm used to when I go out to eat, even more so when most eateries are still operating on mostly takeout. The zombies themselves were served to me piping hot fresh out of the oven and absolutely delicious. The pizza zombie was just like the breakfast zombies of my adolescence on steroids. And while the biscuits and gravy zombie did not look visually appealing, it was well seasoned (much more than you'd think) and very filling. Could nostalgia be an influencing factor in my review? Maybe. But I generally hold all businesses to the same standard of "Don't suck" and Patty's Original Cheese Zombies anything but sucked. This place is an absolute East Bay gem and I highly encourage even folks that live out of the way to come through and show love to these good folks.

Yelp
If you currently or previously went to high school in the Mt. Diablo Unified or Acalanes Union High School Districts and this was your morning ritual, this is probably a five-star experience for you. (Mr. Jenbert and I are from the AUHSD, but zombies were not part of our morning ritual, although you can make the argument that Mr. Jenbert is a zombie in the mornings) If not, this is more of a three and a half star experience. Patty's zombies are popular and seem to have a cult following, even during Covid. There was a line out the door when I got there, in part because there was only one person working there. We got four flavors: sausage, biscuits & gravy, breakfast, and plain cheese. There are plenty of flavors and ooey-gooeiness of the cheesy bread (American cheese). Prices are cheap, but it tastes about the same as cafeteria food, which is to be expected. The sausage one tasted highly processed and we both agreed that it was a waste. The others were OK, but we also understand that we are not the target demographic here. My takeaway: If you miss the zombies from high school, this is the place for you. If you've never had a zombie before and are curious, this is also the place. For anyone else, it's really a toss-up because the wait time can be a while and in a true throwback to high school, the quality is on par with a high school cafeteria's.

Michael S.

Yelp
I didn't attend high school in Contra Costa County so I never had Cheese Zombies first hand, but I have heard about them from the locals. They sounded delicious and I figured it was a delicacy I'd never get to enjoy. I recently heard about a place in Concord that sells Cheese Zombies from the original recipe. It didn't take much digging to find this wonderful shop. I finally made my way there today, and OMG (as the kids say) the treats are delicious. A warm bread roll embracing several ounces of melted American cheese. To die for! They offer lots of Zombies with extra stuffings, and while I bet they are tasty, I think I could live on the Original.

Chris G.

Yelp
If you don't know Patty's, you need to come out of your cave. This place is amazing and reminds me of my time at Mt. Diablo High!
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
Blast from the past for my boyfriend who grew up and went to school around the area. Our favorite is the biscuit and gravy zombie for breakfast. Also really enjoy the pizza zombie. I wish they had a cheese and hot dog zombie but otherwise settle for a cheese zombie and a hot dog zombie and take a bite from each
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
Bringing back those high school memories! It was only recently that I learned people who grew up outside of this area, did not get to experience this delicious brunch item every day in high school. I have not had one since those days and I told my sister about this place last week. Friday morning, she showed up at my door surprising me with this warm cheesy goodness! She got two cheese zombies and one sausage one for us to split. Sausage is still my favorite. I need to go visit and try some of the other flavors that we didn't have in high school. But the classic cheese and sausage will always hold a special place in my heart. Cinnamon rolls never had anything on the zombies!
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
If you loved the cheese zombies you got in the school cafeteria when you were a kid, you're gonna love Patty's Original Cheese Zombies. They taste identical to what you remember from back in the day. For me, this particular food item isn't wrapped in nostalgia, but I get its appeal to those that love it. I've eaten a cheese bomb or two from Patty's over the years, and they definitely satisfy a hunger pang, but I always feel just a bit underwhelmed. Nothing's wrong with the zombies, they're actually perfect for what they are: a warm squishy bun filled with oozing American cheese (and salty meat, if you like). It's yummy, but whenever I eat a zombie, I find myself wanting it to taste sweeter, like ensaymada or Korean street toast. Not everyone likes sweet/savory, so obviously I don't expect all the zombies here to taste like that, but man I'd love it if they offered one variety that was sweeter than the rest. They make cinnamon rolls here, they should sell a zombie that's been iced with the cinnamon roll glaze! Better yet, offer an option to have the top of ANY zombie brushed with melted butter and dipped in a little sugar! MMm mmm! I'm sure you think I'm crazy but this would taste sooo good, and it would push the cheese zombie into the realm of what it really is for me: a decadent indulgence. May have to bring my own butter and sugar next time and test my idea out on a Spicy Ham jalapeno & cheese zombie! This is a very easy location to find, lots of parking, and the service is friendly and fast. Good Covid protocols followed here too.

Yelp
Taking a bite into one of these beautiful hot zombies brings back memories of school, friends from the past, carefree days of having no responsibilities and just plain fun. I am not the only one that feels this way. School years were spent chowing down on these delicious balls of dough filled with golden goodness. When I walked into the little shop the gentleman behind the counter explained that his mom was a lunch lady for Mt. Diablo school district and that she was very familiar with zombies. I appreciated the gentleman's story and the time spent just chatting with me. I wish this location all the best and will undoubtedly swing by to grab a dozen and a half zombies to share with my family and friends. Zombies Rule!!!

Kev H.

Yelp
I was super impressed at how fresh the buns were. We tried the original (cheese only) and the jalapeno cheese. Both were good. The bun was fresh, hot, soft and filled with ooey gooey hot melted cheese. I personally enjoyed the original better as I was able to really taste and enjoy the flavor of the bread without being distracted by the jalapeno. I would say the cheese filling itself was nothing to write home about - it kinda reminded me of Velveeta or sliced cheese, but it went really well with the bun. So I think the star of the show was really the buns. When I got my jalapeno cheese bun, the guy cautioned me to be careful as it was just taken out from the oven - I appreciated the warning and the fact that it was super freshly baked. It was steamy when I split it into two. Yum!
