Food. Fresh. Great portions. Properly cooked from scratch.
Service. Excellent. Friend, welcoming, warm.
Atmosphere. Warm, welcoming, almost like going to the Cheers Bar from the TV show Cheers.
I heard rave reviews about this place, so I decided to check it out during lunch. It had a warm, retro diner vibe with nostalgic decor and tabletop $0.25 coin-op music machines. Unfortunately, the machines didn’t work, but the background music was still from the same era as the selections.
This second-generation HFH (hamburger, French fry, hotdog) establishment has been serving delicious food since 1958. There’s hope that it’ll be passed down to the next generation.
Here are some reasons why this place deserves a 5-star rating:
- They make their own spruce beer and cherry soda, both of which are fantastic and reasonably priced.
- They use red potatoes for their fries, giving them a unique, slightly sweet flavour.
- Their fries are homemade, thick-cut, and slow-fried to perfection. They’re crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
- They serve a Michigan hotdog and make a homemade meat sauce that completely covers the hotdog. It’s to die for!
The star of the show is always their poutine. I ordered a layer of fries, curd cheese, fries, a little more cheese, and it was fully covered in hot, savoury poutine gravy that would make any Quebecer proud.
I also tried their Michigan hotdog and poutine with a cherry soda. The portions were generous, the food was fresh and delicious, and the staff was always busy cleaning and replenishing supplies.
The seating is simple and old-fashioned. There are swivel stools at the counter table to watch the cooking, and regular chairs facing the north wall. People also stand in the middle when it’s busy to check things out while eating.
Their burgers are scratch-made and juicy, according to my neighbour. They have excellent flavour and fresh toppings.
They also sell a stacked club sandwich that’s amazingly delicious. Try to come during odd hours when it’s not as busy at noon or 6:00pm hours are always busy. But this being stated, it’s actually enjoyable to eat amongst all the people when busy as it creates a warm atmosphere of like minded patrons enjoying a great meal.
Overall, I had a great time at this diner. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was fun. I highly recommend it! .
