The Best Poutine in Montreal | Bon Appétit

"A 1958-established Pointe-Saint-Charles institution exuding old-school diner character with checkered tiles, steel counters, and tabletop jukeboxes; the straightforward poutine made with thick-cut potatoes is a local staple. Pairings like steamies served all-dressed and the house-made spruce beer—brewed in the diner’s back room from a long-standing recipe—underscore the spot’s nostalgic, no-frills charm." - ByValerie Silva

The Best Poutine in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Once rough-and-tumble, Pointe-St-Charles is certainly changing, but the neighbourhood still has Paul Patates, a casse-croûte dishing homemade spruce beer, steamés, and an archetypal poutine." - Erinn Blicher

The Best Montreal Hot Dogs | Eater Montreal

"This Pointe-St-Charles casse-croûte icon maintains its local legend status thanks to its bière d’épinette (spruce beer) made from a recipe dating back to 1898, poutine, and, of course, classic steamies." - JP Karwacki

The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Pointe-St-Charles | Eater Montreal

"If it’s traditional casse-croûte offerings you’re craving, there’s probably no better option than Paul in the Pointe. The Best French Fries in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"This thoroughly unpretentious Pointe-St-Charles diner has been a neighbourhood staple since the ‘50s. Known for its steamies, spruce beer and poutine, Paul Patates also does great, quintessentially Québécois fries." - Holly Tousignant

This is diner food perfection! The double burger was phenomenal. The two beef patties were perfectly seared and incredibly juicy, served on a fresh, toasted bun. Equally great were the fries—thick-cut and tasting truly homemade. It's a classic, satisfying meal executed flawlessly.

Food. Fresh. Great portions. Properly cooked from scratch. Service. Excellent. Friend, welcoming, warm. Atmosphere. Warm, welcoming, almost like going to the Cheers Bar from the TV show Cheers. I heard rave reviews about this place, so I decided to check it out during lunch. It had a warm, retro diner vibe with nostalgic decor and tabletop $0.25 coin-op music machines. Unfortunately, the machines didn’t work, but the background music was still from the same era as the selections. This second-generation HFH (hamburger, French fry, hotdog) establishment has been serving delicious food since 1958. There’s hope that it’ll be passed down to the next generation. Here are some reasons why this place deserves a 5-star rating: - They make their own spruce beer and cherry soda, both of which are fantastic and reasonably priced. - They use red potatoes for their fries, giving them a unique, slightly sweet flavour. - Their fries are homemade, thick-cut, and slow-fried to perfection. They’re crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. - They serve a Michigan hotdog and make a homemade meat sauce that completely covers the hotdog. It’s to die for! The star of the show is always their poutine. I ordered a layer of fries, curd cheese, fries, a little more cheese, and it was fully covered in hot, savoury poutine gravy that would make any Quebecer proud. I also tried their Michigan hotdog and poutine with a cherry soda. The portions were generous, the food was fresh and delicious, and the staff was always busy cleaning and replenishing supplies. The seating is simple and old-fashioned. There are swivel stools at the counter table to watch the cooking, and regular chairs facing the north wall. People also stand in the middle when it’s busy to check things out while eating. Their burgers are scratch-made and juicy, according to my neighbour. They have excellent flavour and fresh toppings. They also sell a stacked club sandwich that’s amazingly delicious. Try to come during odd hours when it’s not as busy at noon or 6:00pm hours are always busy. But this being stated, it’s actually enjoyable to eat amongst all the people when busy as it creates a warm atmosphere of like minded patrons enjoying a great meal. Overall, I had a great time at this diner. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was fun. I highly recommend it! .

Google
Bought a large poutine and it was simply incredible. Gravy was traditional style not too salty, fries were fresh and crispy and cheese was perfect. Would recommend to anyone visiting Montreal!

Google
Best overall classic poutine in the city everything is done right, the sauce is neither too thick or runny, nor is it overly salty. Fries have a nice crispness and the cheese is up to standards. Also can't forget the spruce beer. Hidden gem in PSC, wish it was open on Sundays!

Google
The hamburger combo + poutine and spruce beer was fantastic. The burger was simple but perfectly cooked. The cheese curds were very squeaky. I really enjoyed the spruce beer, too. Highly recommended for some really good poutine!

Google
I read an article about places where locals love to eat, so I decided to check it out. The diner was retro-looking, the employees were friendly, and the food was very good. As you can see, they give you a good deal of food for your money. It was the first time we tried the spruce beer, which was an acquired taste. Not saying it was bad, but it took me a minute to get used to it. Overall, I am very glad we stopped by for a quick bite before our long trip back home.

Google
I’m not normally a fan of poutine, but the poutine here is simply the best I’ve ever had anywhere - real squeaky curds and fries that were so good and fresh they were very nearly sweet. Service is very friendly, the ambiance local, nostalgic, Québécois - a last vestige of its kind in Montreal. Looking forward to going back again to try the spruce beer (not real beer, but like root beer). A must try.

We drove down to Verdun and visited a classic casse-croûte established in 1958. Impeccable fries with the slightest crunch to them. A classic sauce that doesn't try too hard to be special and reinvent poutine. Cheese at the perfect temperature before being added so it doesn't melt but also isn't cold... This Poutine is pure. Flawless. The Hot dogs were the ideal size in our opinion, big enough for 2 to be filling and somehow tastes fresher than hotdogs usually do; we're not sure if that's due to the bread or the sausage itself. We loved the food but what's really special and unique about Paul Patates is their homemade spruce beer! A recipe from 1898 - We didn't know spruce beer could taste that good. We were previously used to the run-of-the-mill grocery store soda type and we don't even know where to start describing how much better this is. You'll just have to go try for yourself!

Yelp
Not one of my favorite poutines in the city. Too little curds, too little gravy, and the fries are good, but dense. It feels like a small shop and less what I was expecting out what I thought would be a good meal. I felt like I was back at Nathan's, except during the winter season. The neighborhood it is in though is really cute and charming and that is why I stuck around as long as I did. Stick with Patati Patata, Chez Claudette, and Greenspot. Those are my 1, 2, and 3 for best poutine in Montreal. Sit this one out.

Yelp

Yelp
I had poutine for the first time during my trip and I am happy to say that I'm glad it was here at Paul Patates! Got myself a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich, my partner got a burger, and we both shared the poutine. He loved the poutine too! You really get a huge portion for a great price! Highly recommend trying it out!

Yelp
Does the perfect poutine exist? What gives an ordinary person the right to make such a bold claim. In a city full of the next best poutine, you will find Paul Patates tucked away in Pointe St-Charles. This is a decades-old establishment that has been here since 1958! This spot is so unapologetically quebecois and is nostalgic of simpler times. Their blue-yellow tile really drives home the vintage diner aesthetic. Let me tell you, they have got their poutine down to a science. Their fries are hand cut and not too thin or thick. They are perfectly crisp on the outside and soft-melt in your mouth goodness on the inside. The gravy is deep and flavorful and perfectly complements the dish. The cheese is perfectly squeaky and not overly melted upon serving. It's rare to be blown away by a poutine these days, but this is truly exceptional! If you consider yourself a poutine aficionado, go give their poutine a try!

Yelp
Normally I get take out but today I chose to eat inside. A M B I A N C E This cute little diner is the perfect place to grab a poutine or hot dog! It's decor of blue and yellow tiles brings you back to a simpler time. You can grab a table or sit up on bar stools against the kitchen. If you sit down at a table the waitress will come to you. This is where they filmed and hung out in the show Taxi 0-22. Taxi 0-22 is a popular Canadian television comedy series, which airs on TVA, a Quebec-based French language network in Canada. C L E A N L I N E S S This place looks good! It's definitely dated, being open since 1958 but it does look clean for a snug diner in PSC! O V E R A L L Q U A L I T Y They have their own Spruce Beer (Bière d'Épinette Maison) that you should definitely give a try! I normally get the regular BBQ poutine ($7.54) and it's great! They also have hot dogs, burgers, pogos, fries, and sandwiches. C O S T They do not accept credit cards! So keep that in mind when you're on your way! Prices are reasonable and portions are big! W A I T T I M E S From ordering to food it is usually less than 5 minutes. So a perfect place for a quick bite before exploring PSC. P A R K I N G Free street parking, just be sure to check the signs because certain days you're not allowed to park during lunch hours. L O C A T I O N On the corner of Charlevoix (pretty busy street) and de Coleraine (a one way street). There is a bus stop outside and Metro less than a 6 minute walk away. H E L P F U L S T A F F Literally everyone here is so nice. And they're all bilingual, so whether you're francophone or anglophone you'll fit in great! Sit by the kitchen if you want to have a little conversation with the waitress/cooks. It's a lovely little place.

Yelp
The best!!! I've met Paulo and Suzanne back in 89. Wonderfull people! A must for anyone

Yelp
Fantastic service, delicious hand crafted drink (spruce beer), and freshly made poutine to order. The potatoes seem freshly handcut, the cheese curds fresh and chewy, and the gravy...well, it's savory and with a consistency of a thick syrup. Having never had poutine before, my family and I are grateful to have tried theirs first. The spruce beer is unique and I really, really liked it. Just four ingredients. With our poutine, we each chose a protein- 2 chose hamburgers (standard burgers), a corndog, and a hotdog with everything. The setting was a cute diner in blue, orange and chrome.

Yelp
Solid "petit patate" In Saint Charles. Accepts debit. Has AC. Stopped in for lunch on a weekday. Pretty crowded with locals, but not so much so that there was a wait. Zero tourists. Fast service, was in and out easily in under an hour We got Poutine and boiled hot dogs, but many around us had ordered sandwiches rich with mayo and piled high with chicken and good classic white bread and they looked GREAT. Frankly, for all the above, I would happily rank this casse croûte far above many of the crowded touristy plateau places.

Yelp
In a world of over-polished poutine chains the old school, casse croute family holdouts own my soul. Keep your crazy hours, Paul Patate, just also keep your perfect fries, your best in the land homemade biere d'epinette, your funny friendly quick on the draw staff, and all the proud history of your time in Pointe St Charles papering the walls. Personally, the poutine gravy here isn't my absolute favourite, but maybe it's made to balance perfectly with the white vinegar in squeeze bottles on every table. Because get that all over a Paul Patates poutine then try to tell me you are not in pure poutine heaven.
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
Definitely worth a try if you're a fan of simple poutine like I am. It's not heavy on the salt like a lot of poutines can be, and the portion is generous, and a good value for the price.
google avatar

Dave L.

Yelp
One of the best place to eat hot dogs, poutine and fries in Montreal. They also do homemade spruce beer who apparently is very good. I personally didn't liked it but it was the first time I had one. If you want really good poutine, forget all theses fancy places and go there, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Devon G.

Yelp
Real decent poutine shop and the house soady pops are blessed by papa himself! Curds are squeakers that's for sure, taters are nice and sweet, gravy is tasty and a good consistency.

Stuart ..

Yelp
Super place. Loved the 1950s diner feel. The poutine was old fashioned - simple. Tasty curds and fresh fries. Also enjoyed their homemade pine beer. A great stop after hiring Bixi bike and pedaling along Lachine Canal. Their is a Bixi station right around the corner. Well worth the effort

Yelp
I've been to Paul Patates of course after seeing it on Taxi 0-22.. The food was good, I've had better. And there is one major problem. It is wayyy overpriced!! I don't know how the owner(s) can sleep well at night charging 4.85$ for a small poutine and 3.25$ for a michigan.. come on guys.. We'll go somewhere else next time..

A L.

Yelp
So good! Came here and grabbed a classic poutine and spiced beer to go. It's your old school neighbourhood diner without any frills. The poutine was not overly salty and fries were freshly fried on the spot. Spiced beer was the perfect accompaniment. Servers were very nice. Will be back next time we're in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Seriously excellent toastés and choice fries (what do you expect from a guy named "Paul Patates"?) in a classically kétaine diner setting ("depuis 1958"), and you can wash them both down with a legendary Bertrand spruce beer ("since 1898"). Try the spruce beer float (a true Montreal classic) when the weather's fine.
google avatar

Jeff O.

Yelp
Pauley Potato is moderately famous for being the scene of a television show, but I want to talk about their Spruce Beer. The clear, non-alcoholic soda in it's own labeled bottles smells atrocious, and tastes moderately good. It's an experience, and probably worth the trip. The poutine is passable (is there any bad poutine, really?), and other items are not necessarily greasy spoon, but definitely a Montreal that Americans don't go. That's cool. I think there was a picture of Celine Dion in there.
google avatar

Stephen R.

Yelp
After enjoying the spruce soda made at Paul Patates, I was very hopefully to visit the place for a fresh soda and a meal. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed more than hour before it is supposed to close and I did not get to enter even though I arrived well within the time frame that the business advertises its open hours.

Kim D.

Yelp
Great cantine. I only had poutine and spice beer so I can speak for the rest of their menu. The poutine met my criteria (good gravy, plenty o' cheese, food fries). i was slightly worried thinking the gravy was going to be the dark one (from photos posted) but it wasn't - to my delight. The service was very good and the order was in front of me in less than a minute. Great!

Linda S.

Yelp
Paul Patates is a locally owned and operated restaurant that focuses on serving great burgers, steamies and poutine at reasonable prices. This is down home food of high quality. Don't forget to try their homemade spruce beer.

Planders P.

Yelp
Overpriced, bland food. I've had a cheeseburger there three times and every one made me sick. The only good thing they have is the breakfast sandwich, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.
