I'm glad I tried Peacock Cafe but never feel a want or need to go back. My friend and I went for a late Saturday night dinner and were able to get seats immediately. As it was a warm evening, we were able and chose to sit outside. This was fortunate for us, as it was loud enough inside where it was hard to have a conversation. The internal decor was nice, with tasteful low lighting and a good wood and glass mixture.
Our service was fine, nothing exceptional or terrible. Peacock Cafe started by giving us free bread and butter, which was quite good. The bread had a chewy interior and a nice crust and the butter was easily spreadable and rich.
My friend and I split two appetizers, the nachos and the tuna tartare. The nachos were a somewhat elevated form of bar nachos, and we appreciated the vegetarian chili. Overall, a well-composed dish, although nothing unique other than the chili and overpriced for the ingredients and dish size. The wasabi on the tuna tartare provided a unique spicy element to the tuna without overwhelming it and the marinated cucumber added a crunch and mildly salty component.
My friend ordered the salmon cake salad and I ordered the qaymeh. I tried some of my friend's salad, and while the fish was properly cooked, there was no particularly notable flavor and the salad needed more quinoa. The qaymeh was disappointing and a textbook example of a restaurant trying to do too much with its menu. Peacock Cafe is contemporary American and qaymeh is a Persian dish, not related to any other dish on the menu and it showed. Other than a few tasty pickled vegetables on the side, there was not much good about the dish. The lentils were not well-cooked to the point of being crunchy, there was an improper rice-to-dish ratio (way too much rice), and there were maybe three very small lamb pieces. Especially for the portion size and food quality, at $25 the qaymeh was way overpriced.
If you're looking for fine or affordable dining (especially American), I would check out other places, even on that street.
