The Best Coffee Shops & Cafes In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"With plenty of tables, outlets, and a fairly quiet atmosphere, Pedestrian Coffee in Lakeview is fully equipped for getting sh*t done. Their long tables provide enough space for groups to spread out, while smaller ones are perfect for solo work when you realize your couch isn’t ideal for productivity. They have some pastries to snack on, but their location is also so close to spots like Taipei Cafe, Zaza’s Pizzeria, and Bop N Grill." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru

15 Coffee Shops Open Late In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Pedestrian Coffee in Lakeview has plenty of outlets and seating, perfect for getting some work done. But despite the long tables that seem to be asking for a local book club or project group to loudly set up shop, this spot tends to be fairly quiet—probably because everyone is silently savoring one of their delicious pour-over coffees. They also have some pastries, but the focus here is definitely on coffee. And if a bacon scone won’t tide you over, Pedestrian is very close to places like Taipei Cafe, Zaza's Pizzeria, and Bop N Grill." - veda kilaru

Google
Small coffee and food shop next to the Belmont red line. Started coming this month and from the moment I walked in it was the most relaxing spot for me post-chiropractor. The girl taking your order with the enthusiastic demeanor is the best; when I ordered today she made sure to go above and beyond for me to check if they had an ingredient included on the breakfast menu. I ordered the bowl. Then, she made this with her own hands. YES IT TASTES AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS. I really like this place. 10/10

Google
Nestled right under the L tracks, this spot has a very nice selection of drinks, some good pastries, and a few new hot food items. Lots of seating, including a small outdoor patio with an overhang if you don't mind the train noise. Great spot to work, study, or read.

Google
Cute place and lovely staff, but $8.31 (before tip) for this tiny (medium!) lavender latte is insane. It was good but not worth the price. That’s the most I’ve ever spent on a latte in my life including when I visited NYC.

Rolando Mercado

Google
The place was conveniently located next to the hotel I was staying. Once I stopped by the first day, I kept going back whenever I got a chance. Baristas make the coffee to the order and you can tell they love their work, the sandwiches are made to order, not the 1 minute microwave kind you get in other places. Their pastries were so good, I actually ordered two scones to go the morning of my flight back home. I enjoyed the warmth of all staff taking the orders, it was a highlight of my 5 days stay in the neighborhood.

Google
A really friendly, welcoming vibe that's backed up with great coffee and delicious food. I cannot recommend the Deluxe Egg breakfast sandwich enough! Crispy bacon, soft egg on fresh bread with the most incredible honey mustard sauce that cuts through the fat with a beautiful acidic contrast that had me wanting to lick the plate clean if it wasn't socially frowned upon! It's a little pricey, the sandwich and a 12oz latte was about $20, but I have no regrets! Right next to the Red Line, open early, there's no excuse not to come and enjoy their offerings.

Google
my all time favorite coffee shop in chicago 🩵 the charlatte is my favorite but the flash-chilled black iced coffee is great too. the baristas are clearly really experienced and care about the quality of each drink. this also coming from a former baristaaaaa i love this place so much.

Google
Great coffee shop. Good vibes. Great staff. Awesome atmosphere. If you need a break from the city noise. Pop in and enjoy a break. Oh and the coffee is 👌☕️

Google
Adorable, friendly coffee shop with high quality coffee and homemade flavors. The ambiance, music, and even smells are spectacular. Only put 4 stars because it’s probably the priciest local coffee shop I’ve been to so far, but I will be coming back again!

Yelp
Came here for the sourdough cinnamon roll. It lived up to its hype, albeit a touch expensive for the size. Really tasty and seemed like lots of people there working and having work meetings. Non-caffeinated options as well!
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
Been here twice and able to work remotely. The ambient music is a bit loud but my colleagues said they didn't notice it so your devices should be able to suppress the ambient noise from calls. Quality of the coffee is quite good. Recommend. Staff is great and has an awesome neighborhood feel. Metered street parking plentiful most days/times.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop to come work in and have some coffee. I enjoyed both the doppio and the latte. The staff were very friendly too. They have wifi and outlets to charge your devices with a decent amount of indoor and outdoor seating. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Oso E.

Yelp
Sadly out of pastry when I made it in, but the staff was super-polite, the coffee was great, and I loved the feeling in the place. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Kaitlyn W.

Yelp
Great cafe right off the brown line and red line Belmont stop. Theres lots of seating with accompanying outlets and the music they play isn't too loud so it's perfect for studying/getting some work done.
google avatar

Yelp
I frequent The Annoyance Theater down the street from this coffee shop a lot. And as such, have walked by this place, countless times. On this day though, I decided to walk in and give it a try. And boy was I blew away! It's nice and spacious inside and has beautiful vibe. Service was quick and friendly and the coffee that I had was so good! I will be back, you can believe that.

Amun M.

Yelp
Very overpriced and isn't very yummy. The people were great and very nice! The space is a good size as well. However would not be ordering again.

Yelp
I enjoyed my time at Pedestrian coffee today and had a great coffee. I like that they serve them in glass cups and have free water around the place. The greenery & plants were amazing and I felt like I was in a garden. The food looks fantastic & the coffee is pretty strong in my opinion. I wfh here for a couple hours and if you have headphones, you don't hear anything else mostly at all. Very quaint, and the baristas are so kind. Quick to give you suggestions and will even provide the WiFi password if you're new to the joint! Will be revisiting soon!

Yelp
Perfect space near the Belmont train stop. Calm and energetic instrumental music and lots of plants makes it good for work. There's lots of coffee related equipment to purchase. As a former art student, I loved the black and white photographic prints on display and slideshow of images projected on the back wall. Staff is very sweet and quirky, my order was ready fast. Little side note- no microwave so they can toast us baked goods but cannot nuke em. They offered that it would take a few minutes to heat up my scone but I declined. My Americano (my litmus test for a good coffee shop) was lovely. I got a hitchhikers scone- pretty much granola in scone form, was buttery and hearty, filled with dried apricots YUM. Seating outside, along the side of the building was shady and simplistic. The water filling station is too low to fill a big water bottle.

Yelp
Easily my favorite coffee shop in Chicago. Really the ideal place for a coffee with friends & is especially great for studying!! All of the baristas here are above & beyond. Everyone is super kind, service is fast, & importantly they're great at actually making drinks. I've gotten coffee and matcha here, iced and hot & everything has always been perfect! My go to there is the matcha with their rose cardamom syrup. They normally tell me the standard is 5 pumps or something & I just ask them to do 1 pump of the syrup. It's honestly still quite sweet and I can taste all the flavors with just the 1 pump so I can't really imagine getting it with their regular added 5. I love that they use ceremonial grade matcha here. So many coffee shops use weird cream/sweetener cut matcha & it just tastes like milk. Here you get that really good true matcha flavor. Also one last thing on the coffeeshop to study at note- they have lots of outlets & normally play instrumental music here so the lyrics aren't distracting if you're reading something else! Overall just 100% recommend the best coffeeshop I've found in Chicago!

Yelp
This is a great coffee shop for meeting up with people or remote working - there are so many seating options and a majority of the tables are either next to a plug or have built-in power. There's even a small desk in the back corner if you wanted a quiet workspace! The space is cozy but modern and well lit. And I love the plants. There is also an outdoor seating area too. I got a dirty chai latte which was really good, and the oatmeal cherry shortbread which I LOVED! It tasted very fresh and the oatmeal balanced out the sweetness nicely. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Maggie Z.

Yelp
The ambience is cute, nice outdoor seating, and the staff are very nice. I love going here to study, and I love their cortados. I will say the lighting near the back gets a bit dark though.
google avatar

Taylor B.

Yelp
Amazing sourdough cinnamon rolls, amazing coffee, amazing baristas. This place gets really popular for all the remote workers/students as you can see so there's not a lot of places to sit but other than that i cant recommend enough!
google avatar

Yelp
This coffee spot is cute and friendly. We came here on a cold day to get a few lattes and they were both delicious.

Yelp
Current fave coffee shop alert! Pedestrian rocks. I've posted up to work on my laptop a few times and the vibes are always excellent. Great music, clean environment, nice setup with water glasses and clearly marked dish tubs. The staff is incredibly friendly - a few times they've personally walked my drink over to me. Also, once I couldn't get the wifi to work and a barista walked to the back to restart it for me. What a gem :') The coffee is excellent quality. Their iced americano is creamy, rich, refreshing! Espresso never burnt (amen!!!). One time I ordered their lemonade. I think it's made in house, it was absolutely stellar for a hot day. I appreciate that you can get items "for here" in a glass cup (they have 12 and 16 oz for iced drinks! And ofC mugs for hot). This spot is right next to the train but I never notice it honestly- perhaps because it has good sound engineering, or perhaps because the vibey tunes cover it up. It's v chillax and inviting, highly recco!

Yelp
Located at the foot of Belmont station, this coffee shop is a popular gathering place. We loved the nitro cold brew coffee, as it was smooth and not bitter. We ordered one cinnamon roll to eat there and one for later. The topping was gooey and sweet and the roll was hearty and had a tang of sourdough flavor. It is a cozy place to escape the noise of the city and enjoy a delicious coffee and pastry.
google avatar

Mason R.

Yelp
Yes! Everything you want in a coffee shop sits right beside the Belmont CTA Station at Pedestrian Coffee! This place is a gem, with friendly and knowledge staff, excellent coffee, espresso, and tea drinks, a good selection of baked goods, and a combination of hipster and WFH/study vibes. The music playing is the perfect complement to an afternoon power hour to finish up your workday. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Aishah P.

Yelp
Pedestrian Coffee has been my go-to study place for a while now. Sometimes after work or during week ends I will spend almost the entire day at Pedestrian coffee to get my work done. The staff has always been so sweet and friendly and the atmosphere is always perfect for studying or just sitting down to have a chat. One of my favorite drinks in the menu is the Nutella latte! It's sweet and yummy! Their Matcha latte was decent too! They also have a Japanese style coffee which is a bit strong for my taste but I'm sure people will like! They also sell desserts and pastries which always look so fresh and mouth watering. This place offers free Wi-Fi and clean bathrooms for those wondering! They also sell merch, coffee supplies, and coffee beans which is pretty good! Overall I love this coffee shop!

Yelp
I was in the area and stumbled upon this spacious yet cozy coffee shop. I asked the man at the counter what he would recommend and once he informed me that they make their vanilla syrup in house, I was sold and ordered an iced vanilla latte. They have non-dairy options available so I opted for oat milk. Honestly, this was one of the best iced vanilla lattes I have ever tasted. The syrup had a natural sweet flavor and the coffee itself was smooth and robust in flavor. I decided to try out their trail mix scone because it sounded like a healthier option. It was very hearty; I believe I tasted walnuts, dried apricots, and oats. I will definitely be back to try the vanilla latte served hot with a cinnamon roll (it looked so tempting) next time!
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Cute spot, lots of seating and plugs for laptops, very nice staff. The baked items are delicious and baked on-site. I loved the creative flavor combinations on the menu. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Hailey D.

Yelp
The cinnamon roll is SO good!!! I need to come back and get it again. Sadly I did not like the peppermint mocha because it was more mint mint not peppermint and I also didn't taste much Mocha
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
You really should rename these two shops after The Coffee Studio. Better brand recognition. Really.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Friendly service is a standout here. They have the usual (and some unusual) assortment of espresso-based choices here, but my way of evaluating a coffee shop is with a basic black coffee, and theirs is excellent--strong, rich, and with just a hint of bitterness.
google avatar

Daisy J.

Yelp
I once got a cup of coffee and a banana muffin to go on my way to catch the train through their grab-to-go window. I thought the coffee and the muffin are pretty decent but more importantly the grab-to-go window is just so commuter or let's say Pedestrian friendly!! I was super excited to make it my routine on the way to the CTA station.... Sadly, it is not really pedestrian or commuter friendly as I thought but rather dog walker friendly..... the second time I went there and wanted to order a cup of coffee from the grab-to-go window, I was told that that window was only intended for the convenience of someone walking their dogs.... that pretty much bursted my dream bubble of having a nice regular coffee shop to go early in the morning on my way to work...
google avatar

Peter S.

Yelp
The vanilla latte had a rather nutty flavor, for some reason it was really hard for me to finish. It was a lot sweeter than expected in the Chicago area (for reference, full sweet vanilla latte from Intelligentsia is almost less sweet than half sweet vanilla latte from Pedestrian Coffee). My girlfriend liked it, so I can't say it was terrible, but personally it was hard to drink. I also ended up trying their normal iced coffee which was not bad.
google avatar

Cam S.

Yelp
Their pourover is my favorite on the northside, specifically the Ethiopian. I do appreciate their mission, the fact that they ethically source their own coffee is always cool. In the cafe itself, I could take or leave the atmosphere. It's an open concept. It kinda feels modern but not posh. This is a really popular locale situated right next to the L so seating will be limited though depending on the day YMMV. There's a little wall near the checkout with bags and assorted accessories available for purchase. To the team specifically, shout out to the baristas. They're awesome. Really make you feel welcomed there which I greatly appreciated. They roast and ship same day. I'm a subscriber to their 2 week plan so I do have some skin in the game but I feel it's worth it as they truly do have some of the best coffee you'll find in the Midwest.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
I appreciate local coffee roasters and cafes. Pedestrian didnt disappoint. Clean, lots of tables/desk space for working. Whole bean and home brewing accessories are neatly on display with prices marked. I ordered their marketed Honey Lavender Latte. Espresso was smooth, milk foamed just right. Flavor was great! Not too sweet but easy to drink. Service wasn't warm or particularly inviting, but it was efficient and polite enough. You do end up waiting by the entrance/exit door for your hand-crafted beverage, which created a weird cluster with people trying to enter. All in all, I would definitely come here again - glad to see this space being used.
google avatar

Todd L.

Yelp
The best coffee in Chicago. Period. Thoughtful at every step, from sourcing to creating the recipes to crafting the drinks. Try the Charlotte, if you're feeling a little adventurous. My favorite coffee drink, ever.
google avatar

Sean K.

Yelp
Unreal coffee. Unreal service. Got to watch them make it and answered all my questions. Will be back and will try new beans. Great vibes in there as well. Hopefully one day will have a breakfast sandwich.
google avatar

Megh L.

Yelp
This coffee shop took the place of another coffee shop (that was a Wisconsin based chain). Loved that space and was so bummed when it closed. Pedestrian has kept the same inviting, spacious interior and the baristas are super nice. This is a great place to meet a friend for coffee or get some work done. Ambience is good and it's very clean. Food and drink are also great - you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
Great coffee shop, the walk-up window is super convenient and they have the BEST granola I've ever tasted. I was intrigued when I saw it on the menu and glad I tried it. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Kaley W.

Yelp
Perfect for a quick coffee on the way to work or a good spot to do a bit of work. Inside reminds me of a chill college coffee shop. They have great easy listening music going and dim ish lights. The staff is always soooo nice and friendly and great at giving suggestion. The coffee is truly amazing and there are lots of varieties to choose from. Don't leave without getting a pastry - the bacon scones are phenomenal. If I didn't have to work I'd have stayed all day and just sipped coffee while relaxing.
google avatar

Jacob M.

Yelp
Great quality coffee with walk up window. The inside is very nice and great environment to hang with friends.
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
I always enjoy trying coffee from local coffee shops and coffee roasters. Pedestrian coffee did not disappoint. I had the iced honey lavender latte and my husband had the pumpkin spice latte. Both did not disappoint. Both had great flavor, smooth and creamy. Service was very welcoming and engaging. The cafe has several tables, and most were taken on a Sunday afternoon. There were customers reading, socializing, and studying. We enjoyed the cafe while sipping on our drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're looking for a place to study, get work done, read a book, etc, I genuinely feel this is one of the best or at least better options in the immediate area. The music (when we came in) was not super loud, and their back seating area is modern, relaxing, and has a decent amount of seating. They also have outdoor seating which might actually be shared with the apartment above, but it's just to the side of the coffee shop and building so it might get a little noisy being right next to the train station. The only reason I took a star off is because the girl working behind the counter wasn't really that friendly and welcoming, and I also wanted to order a juice to cleanse my body out, but they were out of both of the items I wanted. I will note that the owner did come over from where he was sitting after he overheard the encounter and tried to rectify the situation but saying they had certain components of each drink that they could blend to make something different. I ended up with an iced tea instead, and I did like my choice of drink. I'd definitely come back here in the future to read a book and relax here. It's a 5 minute walk from the pad, so looking forward to having this place nearby!
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
Very cute inside, clean, and plenty of plants! Staff was nice. Coffee was good, they offered a variety of drip, nitro, and pour over as well as lattes and other fancy drinks. The baked goods looked incredible and smelled great too.
google avatar

Yelp
If it was possible to give this place ten stars I would. This is absolutely my go-to, pick-me-up, place. I have tried every item on the menu- and recommend them all. By far the best coffee, staff, & use of space. I write a lot and often need a good coffee spot that isn't playing overstimulating music. Here you will find that there is always instrumental music in the background and the pedestrian coffee customers are so eclectic & quiet. Working here is a delight. There's lots of seating and comfortable ambiance with natural lighting. Conveniently located by the Belmont brown line/red line stop. Just pop in and treat yourself to a productive day starting out with cool people & great coffee. My favorite items: honey lavender latte. The lavender latte is the best lavender latte in the city by a long shot. I've searched long and far to find the perfect one and here it is! Lemonade: it's fresh, it's perfectly tart, it's giving- "I'm thirsty and need more" vibes. Order it. Chai latte: hear me out. Most chai lattes are made with syrup and fake stuff. Not this, the taste and quality are superb. If you want to level up and tolerate dairy- get it with whole milk. You'll be delivered into a delirium of happiness. Eat, sip, work, dip! Sourdough cinnamon roll: yup you read that right. Sourdough cinnamon roll. Just order it. It's fabulous and decadently made.

Mac P.

Yelp
Kicking myself for not checking this place out sooner! I've walked past countless times on my way to the train, but I never thought to give it a try until I saw it featured on Infatuation's "Best Coffee Shops in Chicago". Wow- I was blown away. The space itself is large but cozy, and filled with greenery. The staff is also so friendly- they actually care to know your name. Lastly, the coffee itself is delicious. I tried the Iced Charlatte (with almond milk) and Iced Coffee with homemade pumpkin sauce. Both were smooth and clearly made with love. They were also making the homemade goods right in front of me, so I'll need to try a scone next time I'm there. Will be back many more times!

Yelp
This is such a great place. Me and my bestie have now made this our once a week meeting place. The staff is so nice and the place is huge with so much seating. Coffee and pastries are fabulous too. Definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and amazing lattes. The honey lavender one does it for me every time. It's also a great place to sit and meet up with a friend as they have plenty of room. Quick service and the space is always clean. I also love that they're open in the evenings. They'v been a nice go-to.

Dan S.

Yelp
Pedestrian Coffee is my favorite coffee shop in the city. Their coffee is great, the baked goods are fantastic, and it has lots of seating and good, consistent internet. The employees are super nice and will get to know you if you're a regular. They're open late and they have good bathrooms, making it a great place to hang out and work or meet up with folks.
google avatar

Timothy T.

Yelp
Owners are very friendly- the store looks immaculate inside with a really cool layout for getting a coffee and talking or getting some work done. It's a fun oasis in the middle of the business of the city. I got the char latte + the sour dough cinnamon roll and both were really good. The icing might be slightly addicting on the cinnamon roll but while it's legal be sure and scoop one up. As for the rest of the coffee I order beans delivered to me out of state and I love the jaywalker blend. Each bean is roasted in a way that suits the bean best. It's not a generic "light- medium-dark" but some beans have a lighter roast to them than others. The owner of the shop has been doing coffee in chicago for well over a decade and been really successful in it. He puts a lot of his heart and soul into the business and you can tell from just walking in.

Sandra Z.

Yelp
Pedestrian was introduced to me and I'm never going back. They make every day better!

Eve W.

Yelp
Such an amazing place! Their drinks are the best I had during this 3 day trip in Chicago. Beautiful place.
google avatar

Ingrid Y.

Yelp
Three words: FREE COFFEE FRIDAYS. Yup, that's right. Pedestrian gives out a free small coffee to every person every Friday. I got an iced coffee, which was really tasty, as well as a day old cranberry shortbread. The total was $1.80 for the free coffee and pastry. An absolute steal. Will definitely be back to try one of those tasty looking cinnamon rolls.
google avatar

Timothy C.

Yelp
Super mellow upscale warm minimalist ambiance, well-crafted espresso concoctions match with the friendly, laid back staff.

Rhonda R.

Yelp
I sat on this review for a couple of days, because I don't like to give businesses negative feedback. However, after a few bad interactions with this joint, I've changed my mind. This coffee tastes like warm phlegm. The first time I had this experience with Pedestrian Coffee, I didn't write the review, because that would be crass. The THIRD time I purchased their $7.18 house coffee, I had to say something. Don't spend your money here. To add insult to injury, the barista I encountered was rude. If you're wondering why I went here more than once, it's the shop's convenient location. We're in a recession. If you're going to spend your hard earned dollers, do it elsewhere friends.
google avatar

Inhee J.

Yelp
Totally awesome! Good coffee and clean interior!!!! This place is a gem where you want to spend time with your friends or work
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
They have coffee for pedestrians, so they live up to their name! You can stand at the outdoor window and ring the bell impatiently while racing to board the L at Belmont or more patiently after departing the station. Either way, the street window is super convenient and quick and more friendly than I am. I liked the plain coffee as well: robust and hot, just like me? Cough! Well, it was good coffee and more than just pedestrian on my elitist ranking scale.
